Abstract

The double-beta decay of 82Se to the 0 1 + excited state of 82Kr has been studied with the NEMO-3 detector using 0.93 kg of enriched 82Se measured for 4.75 y, corresponding to an exposure of 4.42 kg⋅y. A dedicated analysis to reconstruct the γ-rays has been performed to search for events in the 2e2γ channel. No evidence of a 2 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state has been observed and a limit of T 1 / 2 2 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 1.3 × 10 21 y at 90% CL has been set. Concerning the 0 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state, a limit for this decay has been obtained with T 1 / 2 0 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 2.3 × 10 22 y at 90% CL, independently from the 2 ν β β decay process. These results are obtained for the first time with a tracko-calo detector, reconstructing every particle in the final state.

Abstract

The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru, $T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{18}$ y. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $5\times10^5$ events and a signal-to-background ratio of ~80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of n=2,3,7, as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained., 11 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ( $2\nu \beta \beta $ ) half-life of$^{82}$ Se as $T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$ y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$ . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ( $0\nu \beta \beta $ ) using 0.93 kg of$^{82}$ Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$ for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$ , where the range reflects $0\nu \beta \beta $ nuclear matrix element values from different calculations. Furthermore, constraints on lepton number violating parameters for other $0\nu \beta \beta $ mechanisms, such as right-handed currents, majoron emission and R-parity violating supersymmetry modes have been set.

Abstract

The NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory has investigated the double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. Using $5.25$ yr of data recorded with a $6.99\,{\rm g}$ sample of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$, approximately $150$ double-$\beta$ decay candidate events have been selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than $3$. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ has been measured to be $T^{2\nu}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}$. A search for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $ < 6.0 - 26$ ${\rm eV}$, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. Limits are also set on models involving Majoron emission and right-handed currents.

Abstract

We report the results of a search for the neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{100}$Mo, using the NEMO-3 detector to reconstruct the full topology of the final state events. With an exposure of 34.7 kg.y, no evidence for the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ signal has been found, yielding a limit for the light Majorana neutrino mass mechanism of $T_{1/2}(0\nu\beta\beta)>1.1 \times 10^{24}$ years (90% C.L.) once both statistical and systematic uncertainties are taken into account. Depending on the Nuclear Matrix Elements this corresponds to an upper limit on the Majorana effective neutrino mass of $ < 0.3-0.8$ eV (90% C.L.). Constraints on other lepton number violating mechanisms of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decays are also given. Searching for high-energy double electron events in all suitable sources of the detector, no event in the energy region [3.2-10] MeV is observed for an exposure of 47 kg.y.

Abstract

To be sensitive to an effective Majorana neutrino mass, 〈 m ν 〉, on the order of 0.1 eV, the NEMO 3 double beta (ββ(0ν)) decay experiment requires precise knowledge and control of the backgrounds. The effect of neutrons and γ-rays from the Frejus underground laboratory (LSM, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane) has been studied during 10 700 h of data collection. The data were taken with a NEMO 2 prototype detector using different shield configurations. Monte Carlo calculations with GEANT/MICAP code and a new library of γ-rays from neutron captures are presented. The implied consequences for the NEMO 3 detector which is under construction are discussed. The neutrinoless double beta decay background induced by neutrons and γ-rays within the LSM will be suppressed to the very suitable level of 0.1 event in a live time of five years given the appropriate shield and magnetic field.

Abstract

No evidence for the neutrinoless double-{beta} decay of {sup 100}Mo has been found in a search using a segmented Si(Li) detector with source foils enriched to 97{percent} {sup 100}Mo. From an exposure of 0.2664 mole years, and using Bayesian statistics to calculate confidence levels, we find a 68{percent} lower limit on the half-life for the J{sup p}=0{sup +}{r_arrow}0{sup +} transition of 0.22{times}10{sup 23} yr. Abstract

From data accumulated over 6140 h with 172 g of enriched molybdenum (1.18 mol yr of $^{100}\mathrm{Mo}$) with the NEMO 2 detector in the Fr\'ejus Underground Laboratory, a clear \ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}2\ensuremath{\nu} signal (1433 events) is observed, leading to a half-life ${\mathit{T}}_{1/2}$=0.95\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.09(syst) ${10}^{19}$ yr. The experimental two-electron energy spectrum and the two-electron angular distribution are in agreement with the expected ones. Limits for \ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}0\ensuremath{\nu} decays to the ground state, excited states (${2}_{1}^{+}$ and ${0}_{1}^{+}$), and also with Majoron emission are given.

Abstract

The half-life for double-{beta} decay of {sup 150}Nd has been measured by the NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory. Abstract

The double beta decay of 100Mo to the 0^+_1 and 2^+_1 excited states of 100Ru is studied using the NEMO 3 data. After the analysis of 8024 h of data the half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100Mo to the excited 0^+_1 state is measured to be T^(2nu)_1/2 = [5.7^{+1.3}_{-0.9}(stat)+/-0.8(syst)]x 10^20 y. The signal-to-background ratio is equal to 3. Information about energy and angular distributions of emitted electrons is also obtained. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay to the excited 0^+_1 state has been found. The corresponding half-life limit is T^(0nu)_1/2(0^+ --> 0^+_1) > 8.9 x 10^22 y (at 90% C.L.). Abstract

The NEMO 3 detector, which has been operating in the Frejus underground laboratory since February 2003, is devoted to the search for neutrinoless double beta decay (bb0nu). Half-lives of the two neutrino double beta decays (bb2nu) have been measured for 100Mo and 82Se. After 389 effective days of data collection from February 2003 until September 2004 (Phase I), no evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay was found from ~7kg of 100Mo and ~1 kg of 82Se. The corresponding lower limits for the half-lives are 4.6 x 10^23 years for 100Mo and 1.0 x10^23 years for 82Se (90% C.L.). Depending on the nuclear matrix elements calculation, limits for the effective Majorana neutrino mass are < 0.7-2.8 eV for 100Mo and < 1.7-4.9 eV for 82Se, Comment: 5 pages Submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract

The development of the NEMO3 detector, which is now running in the Frejus Underground Laboratory (L.S.M. Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane), was begun more than ten years ago. The NEMO3 detector uses a tracking-calorimeter technique in order to investigate double beta decay processes for several isotopes. Abstract

We report the results of an experimental search for neutrinoless double-{beta} decay using isotopically enriched foils of {sup 100}Mo interleaved in a stack of 40 silicon detectors. With an exposure of 69.9 mole days, we place lower half-life limits on the {ital J}{sup {ital P}}=0{sup +}{r arrow}0{sup +} transition of 4{times}10{sup 21} yr (68% C.L.) and on the 0{sup +}{r arrow}2{sup +} transition of 4{times}10{sup 20} yr (68% C.L.).
