Abstract: The past few decades have seen major developments in the design and operation of cryogenic particle detectors. This technology offers an extremely good energy resolution - comparable to semiconductor detectors - and a wide choice of target materials, making low temperature calorimetric detectors ideal for a variety of particle physics applications. Rare event searches have continued to require ever greater exposures, which has driven them to ever larger cryogenic detectors, with the CUORE experiment being the first to reach a tonne-scale, mK-cooled, experimental mass. CUORE, designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, has been operational since 2017 at a temperature of about 10 mK. This result has been attained by the use of an unprecedentedly large cryogenic infrastructure called the CUORE cryostat: conceived, designed and commissioned for this purpose. In this article the main characteristics and features of the cryogenic facility developed for the CUORE experiment are highlighted. A brief introduction of the evolution of the field and of the past cryogenic facilities are given. The motivation behind the design and development of the CUORE cryogenic facility is detailed as are the steps taken toward realization, commissioning, and operation of the CUORE cryostat. The major challenges overcome by the collaboration and the solutions implemented throughout the building of the cryogenic facility will be discussed along with the potential improvements for future facilities. The success of CUORE has opened the door to a new generation of large-scale cryogenic facilities in numerous fields of science. Broader implications of the incredible feat achieved by the CUORE collaboration on the future cryogenic facilities in various fields ranging from neutrino and dark matter experiments to quantum computing will be examined., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in the isotope $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$. In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$ to the first $0^{+}_2$ excited state of $\mathrm{^{130}Xe}$: the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ($2\nu\beta\beta$). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg$\times$yr TeO$_2$ exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90\% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $\mathrm{S^{0\nu}_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${0\nu\beta\beta}$ decay and $\mathrm{S^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${2\nu\beta\beta}$ decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $90\%$ C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{0\nu}_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ mode and $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{2\nu}_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $2\nu\beta\beta$ mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $^{130}$Te to excited states and improve by a factor $\sim5$ the previous results on this process., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: RES-NOVA is a new proposed experiment for the investigation of astrophysical neutrino sources with archaeological Pb-based cryogenic detectors. RES-NOVA will exploit Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$��$NS) as detection channel, thus it will be equally sensitive to all neutrino flavors produced by Supernovae (SNe). RES-NOVA with only a total active volume of (60 cm)$^3$ and an energy threshold of 1 keV will probe the entire Milky Way Galaxy for (failed) core-collapse SNe with $> 3 ��$ detection significance. The high detector modularity makes RES-NOVA ideal also for reconstructing the main parameters (e.g. average neutrino energy, star binding energy) of SNe occurring in our vicinity, without deterioration of the detector performance caused by the high neutrino interaction rate. Abstract: The cryogenic underground observatory for rare events (CUORE) is a cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay ($$0\nu \beta \beta$$0νββ) of $${^{130}\hbox {Te}}$$130Te. The detector consists of an array of $$988\,{\hbox {TeO}_{2}}$$988TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. We report the CUORE initial operations and optimization campaigns. We then present the CUORE results on $$0\nu \beta \beta$$0νββ and $$2\nu \beta \beta$$2νββ decay of $${^{130}\hbox {Te}}$$130Te obtained from the analysis of the physics data acquired in 2017.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most massive bolometric experiment searching for neutrino-less double beta (0 ν β β ) decay. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals (742 kg) arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. This paper will describe the CUORE experiment, including the cryostat, and present the detector performance during the first year of running. Additional detail will describe the effort made in improving the energy resolution in the 130Te 0 ν β β decay region of interest (ROI) and the suppression of backgrounds. A description of work to lower the energy threshold in order to give CUORE the sensitivity to search for other rare events, such as dark matter, will also be provided.

Abstract: We report on a search for double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$130Te to the first $$0^{+}$$0+ excited state of $$^{130}\hbox {Xe}$$130Xe using a $$9.8\,\hbox {kg}\cdot \hbox {yr}$$9.8kg·yr exposure of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$130Te collected with the CUORE-0 experiment. In this work we exploit different topologies of coincident events to search for both the neutrinoless and two-neutrino double beta decay modes. We find no evidence for either mode and place lower bounds on the half-lives: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>7.9\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$T01+0ν>7.9·1023yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.4\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$T01+2ν>2.4·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$90%CL). Combining our results with those obtained by the CUORICINO experiment, we achieve the most stringent constraints available for these processes: $$T^{0\nu }_{0^+_1}>1.4\cdot 10^{24}\hbox {yr}$$T01+0ν>1.4·1024yr and $$T^{2\nu }_{0^+_1}>2.5\cdot 10^{23}\hbox {yr}$$T01+2ν>2.5·1023yr ($$90\%\,\hbox {CL}$$90%CL).

Abstract: TeO2 bolometers have been used for many years to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 130-Te. CUORE, a tonne-scale TeO2 detector array, recently published the most sensitive limit on the half-life, $T_{1/2}^{0��} > 1.5 \times 10^{25}\,$yr, which corresponds to an upper bound of $140-400$~meV on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino. While it makes CUORE a world-leading experiment looking for neutrinoless double beta decay, it is not the only study that CUORE will contribute to in the field of nuclear and particle physics. As already done over the years with many small-scale experiments, CUORE will investigate both rare decays (such as the two-neutrino double beta decay of 130-Te and the hypothesized electron capture in 123-Te), and rare processes (e.g., dark matter and axion interactions). Abstract: Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of $^{130}$Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of live time is $1.6\times 10^{26}$ y at $1\sigma$ ($9.5\times10^{25}$ y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40--100 meV (50--130 meV). Abstract: International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a large-scale double beta decay experiment utilizing cryogenic bolometers that is currently being commissioned at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy. Its primary focus is to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with a projected sensitivity to Majorana neutrino masses near the inverted mass hierarchy region. The detector is composed of 988 5x5x5-cm3 TeO2 crystals of natural isotopic composition arranged in 19 towers of 52 crystals each, all housed in a common dilution refrigerator. A single CUORE-like tower, CUORE-0, was assembled and operated as a stand-alone detector for a period of approximately two years. In this report, the results from CUORE-0 and the current status and physics potential of CUORE are presented.

Abstract: The recent results on neutrino oscillations and the consequent need to measure the value of the neutrino mass are briefly discussed. The operating principle of cryogenic detectors working at low temperatures, where the small heat capacity allows one to record and measure the temperature increase due to the tiny energy lost by a particle in form of heat is described. An application of these detectors is the measurement, or at least an upper constraint, of the neutrino mass in β decay. This approach is complementary and can, in the future, be competitive with experiments based on the spectrometric measurement of the electron energy. The search for neutrinoless double beta decay could reach a better sensitivity on the mass if a neutrino is a Majorana particle. A large cryogenic detector, named CUORICINO, on neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) of 130 Te already yields the best constraint on the absolute value of the Majorana neutrino mass. A much larger detector, named CUORE, for Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events, is currently under construction. With its active mass of 750 kg of natural TeO 2 it aims to reach the sensitivity in the determination of the Majorana neutrino mass suggested by the results of neutrino oscillation under the inverse hierarchy hypothesis. The problem is closely connected with what I call “the second mystery of Ettore Majorana” who suggested a particle that would violate the lepton number.

Abstract: International audience; The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decays. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed.

Abstract: CUORE is a 741kg array of TeO 2 bolometers for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te. The detectoris being constructed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, where it will start taking data in 2015. If thetarget background of 0.01counts/(keVkgy) will be reached, in ﬁve years of data taking CUORE will have a 1˙halflife sensitivity of 10 26 y. CUORE-0 is a smaller experiment constructed to test and demonstrate the performancesexpected for CUORE. The detector is a single tower of 52 CUORE-like bolometers that started taking data in spring2013. The status and perspectives of CUORE will be discussed, and the ﬁrst CUORE-0 data will be presented.Keywords: Double beta decay, Neutrino mass, Bolometers1. Abstract: The recent results showing the presence of neutrino oscillations clearly indicate that the difference between the squared mass of neutrinos of different flavors is different from zero, but are unable to determine the nature and the absolute value of the neutrino mass. Neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) is at present the most powerful tool to ascertain if the neutrino is a Majorana particle and to determine under this condition the absolute value of its mass. The results already obtained in this lepton violating process will be reported and the two presently running DBD experiments briefly discussed. The future second generation experiments will be reviewed with special emphasis to those already partially approved. In conclusion the peculiar and interdisciplinary nature of these searches will be stressed in their exciting aim to discover if neutrino is Dirac or Majorana particle.

Abstract: We report the results of a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in a 9.8 kg yr exposure of Te-130 using a bolometric detector array, CUORE-0. The characteristic detector energy resolution and background level in the region of interest are 5.1 +/- 0.3 keV FWHM and 0.058 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.002(syst)counts/(keV kg yr), respectively. The median 90% C.L. lower-limit half-life sensitivity of the experiment is 2.9 x 10(24) yr and surpasses the sensitivity of previous searches. We find no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay of Te-130 and place a Bayesian lower bound on the decay half-life, T-1/2(0 nu) > 2.7 x 10(24) yr at 90% C.L. Combining CUORE-0 data with the 19.75 kg yr exposure of Te-130 from the Cuoricino experiment we obtain T-1/2(0 nu) > 4.0 x 10(24) yr at 90% C.L. (Bayesian), the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. Using a range of nuclear matrix element estimates we interpret this as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass, m beta beta < 270-760 meV.

Abstract: In relazione ai risultati ottenuti recentemente sulle oscillazioni del neutrino si discute l’importanza di una determinazione diretta della massa di questa particella. Si prendono prima in considerazione gli esperimenti sulla determinazione della massa dell’antineutrino elettronico basati sul decadimento beta, illustrando i risultati ottenuti sia spettroscopicamente che con i nuovi metodi bolometrici. Si considera successivamente l’impatto che puo venire dalle ricerche sul decadimento doppio beta senza neutrini. Dopo una rassegna dei risultati attuali si discutono alcuni esperimenti futuri in grado di raggiungere nella determinazione della massa del neutrino una sensibilita pari a quella richiesta dai risultati sulle oscillazioni del neutrino.

Abstract: The first results are reported on the limit for neutrinoless double decay of 130Te obtained with the new bolometric experiment CUORICINO. The set-up consists of 44 cubic crystals of natural TeO2, 5 cm on the side and 18 crystals of 3×3×6 cm3. Four of these latter crystals are made with isotopically enriched materials: two in 128Te and two others in 130Te. With a sensitive mass of ∼40 kg, our array is by far the most massive running cryogenic detector to search for rare events. The array is operated at a temperature of ∼10 mK in a dilution refrigerator under a heavy shield in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory at a depth of about 3500 m.w.e. The counting rate in the region of neutrinoless double beta decay is ∼0.2 counts keV−1kg−1y−1, among the lowest in this type of experiment. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is found with the present statistics obtained in about three months with a live time of 72%. The corresponding lower limit for the lifetime of this process is of 5.5×1023 years at 90% C.L. The corresponding limit for the effective neutrino mass ranges between 0.37 to 1.9 eV depending on the theoretically calculated nuclear matrix elements used. This constraint is the most restrictive one except those obtained with Ge diodes, and is comparable to them.

Abstract: With 741 kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment aims at searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with unprecedented sensitivity. Expected to start data taking in 2015, CUORE is currently in an advanced construction phase at LNGS. CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6E26 y at 1 sigma (9.5E25 y at the 90% confidence level), in five years of live time, corresponding to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40-100 meV (50-130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary bolometric detectors could improve CUORE sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors towards a full analysis of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. CUORE-0 was built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. It consists of a single CUORE tower (52 TeO2 bolometers of 750 g each, arranged in a 13 floor structure) constructed strictly following CUORE recipes both for materials and assembly procedures. An experiment its own, CUORE-0 is expected to reach a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of 130Te around 3E24 y in one year of live time. We present an update of the data, corresponding to an exposure of 18.1 kg y. Abstract: International audience; The CUORE-0 experiment, a 52 bolometer array searching for neutrinoless double beta decay from 130Te, has started taking data in spring 2013 underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). The excellent results obtained in terms of energy resolution and background level allowed this experiment to reach the sensitivity of Cuoricino in approximately half the runtime. Combining CUORE-0 data (9.8 kg·yr exposure of 130Te) with the 19.75 kg·yr exposure of the Cuoricino experiment, we obtain the most stringent limit to date on the half-life of this isotope (T1/2 > 4.0 × 1024 yr). In this article, we review the results from CUORE-0 and discuss the status and the physics potential of CUORE, a 19 times larger bolometer array that plans to begin operations by end of this year.

Abstract: CUORE-0 is an experiment built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. Com- posed of 52 TeO2 bolometers of 750g each, it is expected to reach a sensitivity to the 0νββ half-life of 130Te around 3 · 1024 y in one year of live time. We present the first data, corresponding to an exposure of 7.1kg y. An analysis of the background indicates that the CUORE sensitivity goal is within reach, validating our techniques to reduce the α radioactivity of the detector.

Abstract: The renewed interest in neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) is discussed in view of the recent evidence in favor of neutrino oscillations. The various direct and indirect experimental approaches to search for DBD, especially in the neutrinoless channel, are reviewed and compared, together with the presently available experimental results. Second generation experiments on DBD are reported, discussed and compared, by considering both those planned with conventional methods as those based on new techniques.

Abstract: The low-Q 187Re forbidden beta transition is studied by means of a microbolometers array in order to get a direct limit on the νe mass. The achievable limit of the on-the-shelf small array (ten detectors) in one year measure acquisition time is less than 10eV/c2. Silicon and Germanium thermistors are being developed also for high resolution x-ray spectroscopy; an excellent energy resolution of 5.4eV in the 6keV region has been achieved. This represent the best published result of an Energy Dispersive Sensor (EDS) in this spectral band.

Abstract: Crystals of silver perrhenate were used for the first time in the bolometric measurement of the spectrum of 187 Re with the aim of determining the electron antineutrino mass. The temperature rise was measured by means of neutron transmutation doped germanium and P-implanted silicon thermistors. The energy scale was calibrated using the K lines of Mn and the fluorescence L lines of Sn. Bolometers made from crystals of masses ranging from ∼250 to ∼500 μg were run with FWHM resolutions on the Sn lines ranging from 25 to 60 eV. The end point of the spectrum was located at 2460±5 stat ±10 syst eV. The measured half lifetime was 43±4 stat ±3 syst Gyr, which is in good agreement with the values obtained with mass spectroscopy from the build-up of 187 Os in rhenium samples. The sensitivity of the measurement on a non-zero neutrino mass achievable with these bolometers is discussed.

Abstract: The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay in {Mathematical expression}Te. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles as well as provide information about the absolute neutrino mass scale and mass hierarchy.The CUORE setup will consist of an array of 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (containing 206 kg of {Mathematical expression}Te in total), operated as bolometers at a temperature of {Mathematical expression}10 mK. The experiment is now under construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. As a first step towards CUORE, a tower (CUORE-0) has been assembled and is taking data. Here a detailed description of the CUORE-0 tower and its performance is reported. Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. Abstract: ▪ Abstract The need for very good energy resolution in experiments in particle and astroparticle physics and the need to detect very small energy depositions are the major motivations for the development of low-temperature particle detectors. Because the energy quanta associated with superconductors and lattice vibrations (phonons) are more than one hundred times smaller, substantial improvements have been obtained in energy resolution and in sensitivity over conventional detectors. Furthermore, these detection schemes permit tailoring of target or absorber materials to match the physics requirements. In this article, the basic physics principles behind various methods of detecting excitations induced by particle interactions in bulk single-crystal materials at low temperatures are reviewed. We also present an overview of progress toward implementation of particle physics experiments, such as detection of low-energy neutrinos, search for dark-matter particles, search for neutrino-less double β decay, and β- and γ-ray spectroscopy and X-ray astronomy using low-temperature detectors.

Abstract: We describe the production of a 62 PBq (62 × 1015 Bq) source of ∼ 750 keV neutrinos coming from the electron capture decay of 51Cr. This is the first time that such a high-intensity, low-energy neutrino source has been produced. The rationale for having such a source is to check the overall procedures of the radiochemical solar neutrino experiment, GALLEX. The source was obtained by neutron activation of 36 kg of enriched chromium at the Siloe reactor at Grenoble. The enriched chromium (containing 38.6% of 50Cr compared to 4.35% for natural chromium) was produced by the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, in the form of CrO3. It was then electrolyzed in Saclay to obtain chromium metal tubes, which were subsequently broken into coarse chips of typically 1 mm3 volume. The chromium chips were put inside 12 special zircalloy irradiation cells that were then placed around the Siloe reactor core, which had been specially reconfigured for this irradiation. The irradiation lasted for 23.8 days. Then the activated chromium was transferred in a stainless-steel container into a sealed tungsten shield having a wall thickness of 8.5 cm. The 51Cr activity at the end of the irradiation (EOB) has been measured to have a mean value of (62.5 ± 0.4) PBq, using several techniques: by neutronics and gamma scanning in the reactor shortly after EOB, with an ionization chamber, by calorimetry, and, after a considerable decay period, by gamma-ray spectroscopy and measurement of the non-radioactive 51V daughter. The source resided in the center of the GALLEX detector at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory between June 23, 1994 and October 10, 1994, irradiating the gallium target with a neutrino intensity well above the solar neutrino background. The results of this full-scale test are in good agreement with the expected efficiency of the entire GALLEX experiment calculated as a product of the known efficiencies of the various parts of the experimental procedure.

Abstract: Since May 1991, the GALLEX experiment — installed in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory — is continuously monitoring the solar neutrino signal by measuring the 71 Ge production rate in a target of 30.3 tons of nat Ga. The measured signal 77.1 ± 8.5 (stat) +4.4 – 5.4 SNU (1 σ ) [1] is well below the Standard Solar Model (SSM) prediction: ⋍ 120–130 SNU. To exclude unknown systematic effects as responsible for the observed deficit, an experiment with a (62.5 ± 0.4) PBq 51 Cr neutrino source has been performed 2. , 3. . The ratio R=0.97 ± 0.11 between measured and expected Cr-produced 71 Ge demonstrates that the deficit cannot be ascribed to unknown experimental systematics. Although astrophysical reasons could still remain as a possible explanation of the “solar neutrino puzzle”, we recall that the GALLEX result, when considered together with the results of the other solar neutrino experiments, would allow to strongly constrain the neutrino masses and mixing angles in the framework of the MSW effect.

Abstract: At the end of 2001 the Milano Double Beta Decay (MI-DBD) experiment on double beta decay of 130Te has been completed. The project Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE), proposed as a natural extension of MI-DBD, will be a tightly packed array of 1000 TeO2 bolometers, each being a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 790 g. The array will consists of 25 vertical towers, arranged in a square of 5 towers by 5 towers, each containing 10 layers of 4 crystals. A single CUORE tower has been constructed as a smaller scale experiment called CUORICINO. The technical feasibility of CUORE is now being tested in CUORICINO, running since few weeks. The CUORICINO experiment consists of 44 TeO2 detectors 5×5×5 cm3 and 18 TeO2 detectors 3×3×6 cm3 for a total mass of approximately 41 kg. An analysis of the detector performances is presented together with the new limit obtained on neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te.

Abstract: In this paper we discuss the perspectives for a new generation of neutrino mass experiments using thermal detectors to reach interesting sensitivities before and after the KATRIN experiment. By scaling the performance of the present Milano neutrino mass experiment with Monte Carlo simulations, we show how a new experiment can validate the present limit of few eV set by spectrometers before the KATRIN experiment starts. We also show how such a result can be used to design a very large thermal detector experiment to reach sensitivities beyond the KATRIN expected one.

Abstract: Systematic measurements of γ-rays have been carried out with two Ge diodes on the chromium-51 neutrino source produced by neutron irradiation to test the GALLEX experiment. The data obtained immediately after irradiation at the reactor and about four months afterwards in the Gran Sasso Laboratory allows a precise neutron activation analysis of the material constituting the source. The values of contaminations leading to radioactive impurities or their upper limits are determined.

Abstract: A 334 g TeO2 crystal has been operated at a temperature of around 10 mK for more than one year in a low intrinsic radioactivity dilution refrigerator installed in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. From the spectrum collected in 9234 h of effective running time we improve our limit on neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te by an order of magnitude with respect to our previous experiment. It is the most stringent on this nucleus and excludes a large contribution of the neutrinoless mode to the rate of double beta decay found in geochemical experiments. Upper limits on the effective neutrino mass and on the contributions of right banded currents are given.

Abstract: To better understand the contribution of cosmic ray muons to the CUORICINO background, 10 plastic scintillator detectors were installed at the CUORICINO site and operated during the final 3 months of the experiment. From these measurements, an upper limit of 0.0021 counts/(keV kg yr) (95% CL) was obtained on the cosmic ray-induced background in the neutrinoless double beta decay region of interest. Abstract: We have searched for two neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decay of 136 Xe with a multicell proportional counter in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. The search for the two neutrino channel has been based on the comparison of spectra obtained in runs with natural and enriched xenon and with xenon which had been specifically cleaned with an ultracentrifuge. Special dedicated runs have been carried out with the various gases to evaluate the background from the rate of α-particles. No evidence has been found for two neutrino or neutrinoless double beta decay. The corresponding lower limits on the lifetime are evaluated with a new statistical procedure.

Abstract: The main purpose of the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) experiment is the search for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0νDBD) of 130 Te reaching a sensitivity on Majorana mass better than 50 meV. Cuoricino represents not only the first stage of CUORE, but also the most massive 0νDBD experiment presently running. Present results and future planning of these experiments will be described in the paper.

Abstract: The problem of the nature of the neutrino, namely i f it is a massless Dirac particle different from its antineutrino or a Majorana particle with finite mass, is discussed. The question is related to the recent results showing the presence of neutrino oscillations clearly indicating that the difference between the squared mass of neutrinos of different flavours is different from zero. Neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) is at present the most powerful tool to determine the effective value of the mass of a Majorana neutrino. The results already obtained in this lepton violating process will be reported and the two pres ently running DBD experiments briefly discussed. The future second generation experiments will be reviewed with special emphasis to those already partially approved. In conclusion the peculiar and interdisciplinary nature of these searches will be stressed in their exciting aim to discover if neutrino is indeed a Majorana particle

Abstract: The results obtained so far in searches for double beta decay (DBD) are reviewed with special emphasis on the neutrinoless channel which could indicate a non-zero effective neutrino mass under the hypothesis that this particle is of Majorana type. The connection of the value of this mass with the indications coming from the recent results of experiments on neutrino oscillation is underlined. The difficulties and uncertainties are emphasized of the calculation of the nuclear matrix elements relevant for DBD. It is stressed that, as a consequence, different nuclear candidates for double beta decay should be investigated. There is an additional need to do so: a peak indicative of neutrinoless double beta decay could be mimicked by some radioactive contamination. Detection of the different peaks expected for DBD in two or more candidate nuclei becomes therefore mandatory. The experimental methods to search for DBD, particularly in its neutrinoless channel, are compared and discussed together with the results obtained so far. The two most constraining experiments presently running (NEMO 3 and CUORICINO) are described in some detail and their preliminary limits discussed. The report is concluded with a description of the presently proposed experiments aiming to reach a sensitivity of a few tens of milli-electronvolts as required by the results coming from oscillation experiments. Special emphasis is given to possible improvements in increasing active mass and resolution, and decreasing background. This comparison refers in particular to the role played with respect to the classical methods of detection (scintillation and ionisation counters, TPC and tracking chambers, large arrays of diodes) by new detecting methods.

Abstract: CUORICINO is an array of 62 TeO2 bolometers with a total mass of 40.7 kg (11.2 kg of 130Te), operated at about 10 mK to search for ββ(0ν) of 130Te. The detectors are organized as a 14-story tower and intended as a slightly modified version of one of the 19 towers of the CUORE project, a proposed tightly packed array of 988 TeO2 bolometers (741 kg of total mass of TeO2) for ultralow-background searches on neutrinoless double-beta decay, cold dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. Started in April 2003 at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), CUORICINO data taking was stopped in November 2003 to repair the readout wiring system of the 62 bolometers. Restarted in spring 2004, CUORICINO is presently the most sensitive running experiment on neutrinoless double-beta decay. No evidence for ββ(0ν) decay has been found so far and a new lower limit, T 1 2/0 ≥ 1.8 × 1024 yr (90% C.L.), is set, corresponding to 〈m ν〉 ≤ 0.2–1.1 eV, depending on the theoretical nuclear matrix elements used in the analysis. Detector performance, operational procedures, and background analysis results are reviewed. The expected performance and sensitivity of CUORE is also discussed.

Abstract: CUORE is a 0.75 ton experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of Te130 using 988 TeO2 bolometers. It aims at reaching a sensitivity on the effective neutrino mass of the order of few tens of meV. CUORICINO, a single CUORE tower running since 2003, plays an important role as a stand alone experiment and for developing the future CUORE setup. Present results already achieved and studies that are underway are here presented and discussed.

Abstract: Neutrino oscillation experiments have proved that neutrinos are massive particles, but can't determine their absolute mass scale. Therefore the neutrino mass is still an open question in elementary particle physics. An international collaboration is growing around the project of Microcalorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE) for directly measuring the neutrino mass with a sensitivity of about 0.2eV/c2. Many groups are joining their experiences and technical expertise in a common effort towards this challenging experiment. Abstract: CUORE is a proposed experiment, already partially funded, to search for 0ν-DBD of 130Te using 988 TeO2 bolometers. It aims at reaching a sensitivity on the effective neutrino mass of the order of few tens of meV. The crucial parameter on which this expectation is based is background. Different strategies are under development to reduce as much as possible its value, among which the comprehension of CUORICINO background, a single CUORE tower running since 2003, plays an important role. Present results already achieved and studies that are underway are here presented and discussed.

Abstract: In the Standard Model of electroweak interactions an important input parameter is still missing: the absolute value of the mass of one of the neutrinos. In this paper we report the final results of the Milano electron anti-neutrino mass experiment after having measured for about one year the beta spectrum of 187 Re with 10 AgReO 4 microcalorimeters. We describe the experimental set-up, the detector performance and the measuring conditions. We present the updated limit on the electron anti-neutrino mass which is the most stringent so far obtained with thermal detectors. We also give the most precise estimates for the 187 Re transition energy and lifetime.
