Abstract: The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: During the years 1994–1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 charged-current interactions with a D 0 in the final state were selected by a pattern recognition program and confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. The ratio of decay branching fractions of the D 0 into four charged particles to two charged particles was measured to be B ( D 0 → V 4 ) / B ( D 0 → V 2 ) = 0.207 ± 0.016 ± 0.004 . The inclusive measurement of the observed production rate of the D 0 with a decay into four charged prongs in combination with external measurements of this topological branching ratio was used to determine the total D 0 production rate by neutrinos without additional assumption on the branching fractions. The value of this rate relative to the charged-current cross-section was found to be σ ( D 0 ) / σ ( CC ) = 0.0269 ± 0.0018 ± 0.0013 . In addition, the same normalization method was used to deduce the inclusive topological decay rate into final states with neutral particles only. A value of 0.218 ± 0.049 ± 0.036 was found for this branching fraction. From an observed number of three charged six-prong events the branching ratio into six charged particles was determined to be ( 1.2 −0.9 +1.3 ± 0.2 ) × 10 −3 . A measurement of the energy dependence of the D 0 production by neutrinos relative to the total charged-current cross-section is also reported. This measurement was used to deduce for m c , the effective charm-quark mass, a value of ( 1.42 ± 0.08 ) GeV / c 2 .

A high-statistics sample of neutrino interactions with a D 0 in the final state was collected. Using the decay mode D * + → D 0 π + a production cross-section measurement of the D * + in neutrino–nucleon charged-current interactions was performed. The low Q-value of the decay was used to isolate a sample of candidate events containing a positive hadron with a small p T with respect to the D 0 direction. A signal of 22.1 ± 5.5 D * + events was obtained. The D * + production cross-section relative to the D 0 production cross-section, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( D 0 ) , was estimated to be 0.38 ± 0.09 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) . From this result, the fraction of D 0 's produced via the decay of a D * was deduced to be 0.63 ± 0.17 . The D * + production cross-section relative to the ν μ charged-current interaction, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( CC ) , was estimated to be [ 1.02 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.15 ( syst ) ] % .

Abstract: We present a leading order QCD analysis of a sample of neutrino induced charged-current events with two muons in the final state originating in the lead-scintillating fibre calorimeter of the CHORUS detector. The results are based on a sample of 8910 neutrino and 430 antineutrino induced opposite-sign dimuon events collected during the exposure of the detector to the CERN Wide Band Neutrino Beam between 1995 and 1998. The analysis yields a value of the charm quark mass of mc = (1.26 ± 0.16 ± 0.09) GeV / c2 and a value of the ratio of the strange to non-strange sea in the nucleon of κ = 0.33 ± 0.05 ± 0.05, improving the results obtained in similar analyses by previous experiments. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The CHORUS experiment, designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations, consists of a nuclear emulsion target and electronic detectors. In this paper, results on the production of charged particles in a small sample of charged-current neutrino-- and anti-neutrino--nucleus interactions at high energy are presented. For each event, the emission angle and the ionization features of the charged particles produced in the interaction are recorded, while the standard kinematic variables are reconstructed using the electronic detectors. The average multiplicities for charged tracks, the pseudo-rapidity distributions, the dispersion in the multiplicity of charged particles and the KNO scaling are studied in different kinematical regions. A study of quasi-elastic topologies performed for the first time in nuclear emulsions is also reported. The results are presented in a form suitable for use in the validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino--nucleus interactions., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: In this paper a search for associated charm production both in neutral and charged current $\nu$-nucleus interactions is presented. The improvement of automatic scanning systems in the {CHORUS} experiment allows an efficient search to be performed in emulsion for short-lived particles. Hence a search for rare processes, like the associated charm production, becomes possible through the observation of the double charm-decay topology with a very low background. About 130,000 $\nu$ interactions located in the emulsion target have been analysed. Three events with two charm decays have been observed in the neutral-current sample with an estimated background of 0.18$\pm$0.05. The relative rate of the associated charm cross-section in deep inelastic $\nu$ interactions, $\sigma(c\bar{c}\nu)/\sigma_\mathrm{NC}^\mathrm{DIS}= (3.62^{+2.95}_{-2.42}({stat})\pm 0.54({syst}))\times 10^{-3}$ has been measured. One event with two charm decays has been observed in charged-current $\nu_\mu$ interactions with an estimated background of 0.18$\pm$0.06 and the upper limit on associated charm production in charged-current interactions at 90% C.L. has been found to be $\sigma (c\bar{c} \mu^-)/\sigma_\mathrm{CC} < 9.69 \times 10^{-4}$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: After completion of the data taking for the ?µ›?? oscillation search, the CHORUS lead-scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. Abstract: Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for ντ charged current interactions followed by the τ lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for νμ→ντ oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no τ− candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for ντ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36 182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin22θμτ

Abstract: A study of quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons in charged-current interactions of neutrinos with the nuclear emulsion target of CHORUS is presented. In a sample of about 46 000 interactions located in the emulsion, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified by using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based both on the topological and kinematical characteristics of quasi-elastic charm production allowed a clear separation between events of this type and those in which charm is produced in deep inelastic processes. A final sample containing 13 candidates consistent with quasi-elastic production of a charmed baryon with an estimated background of 1.7 events was obtained. At the average neutrino energy of 27 GeV the cross-section for the total quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons relative to the νN charged-current cross-section was measured to be σ(QE)/σ(CC) = (0.23-0.06+0.02(stat)×10-2. Through an analysis of the topology at the production and decay vertices the relative cross-sections were measured separately for singly (Λc +, ∑c+, ∑c +*) and doubly (∑c++, ∑ c++*) charged baryons. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: A measurement of ?c+ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a subsample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector, exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in A+ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product ?(?c+)/?(CC) × BR(?c+ › 3p) was measured to be (0.37 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.02(syst)) × 10-2, while the values of (1.54 ± 0.35(stat) ± 0.18(syst)) × 10-2 and of 0.24 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) were obtained for ?(?c+)/?(CC) and BR(?c+ › 3p), respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: CHORUS is an experiment searching for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a hybrid setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for nu(tau) charged current interactions where the tau lepton decays to mu(mu)nu(tau). In a sample of 31,423 nu(mu) charged current interactions, no nu(tau) candidates were found. For large Delta m(mu tau)(2) values, a limit on the mixing angle of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 3.5 x 10(-3) at 90% C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result. Abstract: WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the Wide Band Neutrino Beam from the CERN-SPS. About 170 000 neutrino interactions were successfully located in the emulsion. Improvements in the automatic emulsion scanning systems and application of different criteria allowed the sample of located events to be used for studies of charm production. We present a measurement of the production rate of D 0 mesons based on a sample of 25 693 located v μ charged-current (CC) interactions analysed so far. After reconstruction of the event topology in the vertex region, 283 D 0 decays were observed with an estimated background of 9.2 K 0 and Λ decays. The ratio of cross-section of D 0 production and v μ CC interactions is found to be (1.99 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.17(syst.)) × 10 -2 at 27 GeV average v μ energy. © 2002 Elsevier Science B. V. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the CERN-SPS Wide Band Neutrino Beam. The improvements of the past few years in the automatic emulsion scanning systems allowed a sample of events located in emulsion to be used for studies of charm production. Based on a sample of 56172vμu charged-current interactions analysed so far, we find a value of Bμ = 0.093 ± 0.009(stat.) ± 0.009(syst.) for the semi-leptonic branching fraction of charm hadrons. The result for events with visible energy larger than 30 GeV, Bμ = 0.102 ± 0.016(stat.) ± 0.010(syst.), can be combined with the existing measurements of the dimuon rate to yield a value of 0.219 ± 0.022 for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element \Vcd\. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: Using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer installed in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam, we located a total of 3855 neutrino interactions in the fiducial volume of our target. For 122 charmed-particle decays found in these interactions, we present distributions of x , y , charm-muon angular projection, Feynman- X , and the fragmentation Z . We find that the number of strange quarks in the nucleon sea is 4.2±2.1±2.6% of the number of down quarks.

Abstract: A new type of hybrid appaatus, which consisted of an emulsion target and a magnet spectrometer, was successfully used in an experiment to measure lifetimes of charmed particles produced by the wide-band neutrino beam from 350 GeV protons at Fermilab. The emulsion target was essential to find short distance decay vertices andthe counter spectrometer was used both to localize the neutrino events in the emulsion and also to identify the particles from weak decays and those produced in the neutrino interactions. Newly introduced emulsion techniques such as the changeable sheet as a low background interface to couple the emulsion target with the counter spectrometer, and the single track followback method to locate interaction and decay vertices in the emulsion, were proved to be very powerful. Details of the experimental apparatus and of the method of analysis employed are described.

Abstract: We report final results for the D/sup + -/, F/sup + -/, and ..lambda../sub c//sup +/ lifetimes measured with a hybrid emulsion spectrometer in the wide-band neutrino beam at Fermilab. In total, 3886 neutrino and antineutrino interactions were located in the fiducial volume of the emulsion. From these interactions we have unambiguously identified 6 F/sup + -/ and 13 ..lambda../sub c//sup +/ decays, for which the fitted lifetimes are tau(F/sup + -/) = (2.6/sub -0.9//sup +1.6/) x 10/sup -13/ s and tau(..lambda../sub c//sup +/) = (2.0/sub -0.5//sup +0./ 7) x 10/sup -13/ s. 28 other decays are consistent with a D/sup +/ or D/sup -/ hypothesis. From these events, we obtain a D/sup + -/ lifetime of (11.1/sub -2.9//sup +4.4/) x 10/sup -13/ s.

Abstract: In an experiment measuring charmed-particle lifetimes with a hybrid emulsion spectrometer, 1248 neutrino and antineutrino interactions produced by the wide-band beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory have been located. Twenty-one candidates for the decay of neutral charmed particles are found. The lifetime for the D/sup 0/ based on the sixteen constrained events of this sample is measured to be 2.3/sup +0.8//sub -0.5/ x 10/sup -13/ sec.

Abstract: We have found 122 charmed-particle decays among 3855 neutrino interactions located in the fiducial volume of a hybrid emulsion spectrometer installed in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam. We obtain an average relative charmed-particle production cross section of σ(ν μ → c μ − ) σ(ν μ →μ − ) =4.9 −0.6 +0.7 % , at an average neutrino energy of 22 GeV. We also obtain a production rate of σ(ν μ → c c ν μ ) σ(ν μ →ν μ ) =0.13 −0.11 +0.31 % , if we assume that there was an undetected muon, a limit of σ(ν μ → c c μ − ) σ(ν μ → c μ − ) CL ) can be obtained. Other cross section ratios and limits are also presented.

Abstract: The production of charmed particles has been measured using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam. The relative cross section for charged current charmed particle production is σ(v → μ−c)/σ(v → μ−) = 6.5 ±1.91.8%, and the energy dependence of the cross section is presented. One event with charm pair production was observed. A limit of σ(v → μcc)/σ(v → μc) < 6% (90% CL) is found for the ratio of charged current pair and single charm production.

Abstract: A new method of detecting interaction vertices applicable to a vertical emulsion target of a hybrid apparatus has been studied. It is shown that even a white neutrino interaction with no heavily ionizing track can be detected with high efficiency by following back a secondary track predicted by down-stream detectors. The scanning time needed is far shorter than that of conventional volume scanning method.

Abstract: We report final results for the ${D}^{0}$ lifetime measured with a hybrid emulsion spectrometer in the wide-band neutrino beam at Fermilab. In a total of 3886 neutrino and antineutrino interactions located in the emulsion fiducial volume, we have found 58 ${D}^{0}$ decays, from which we determine the lifetime to be (${4.3}_{\ensuremath{-}0.5\ensuremath{-}0.2}^{+0.7+0.1}$) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}13}$ s.

This letter reports the seven neutral decays which are consistent with a D/sup 0/ hypothesis and determine a lifetime of 1.00/sup +0.52//sub -0.31/ x 10/sup -3/ sec for this charmed state.

Abstract: Charmed hadron production has been studied using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam. The relative rates of D0, D+, F+, and Λ+c production have been measured - the fraction of D mesons is 69 ± 8 10 % . Momentum, transverse momentum, Feynman X, and fragmentation (Z) distributions are presented. The mean Z for charmed hadrons is 0.59 ± 0.03 (±0.03). Charmed target fragments have been observed.

Abstract: Observation of J/? production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band ?µ beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section ?J/? = (6.3 ± 3.0) × 10-41 cm2 is obtained for 20 GeV ? E? ? 200 GeV. The data are compared with the theoretical model based on the QCD Z-gluon fusion mechanism. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: This paper reports Fermilab Experiment 531, ’’A study of Weak Decay Lifetimes of Neutrino Produced Particles in a Tagged Emulsion Spectrometer’’. Lifetimes deduced from 81% of the materials scanned so far are presented for D0, D±, and F± charmed mesons, and Λc+ charmed baryons. Some of physical speculations are made basing on those observed lifetimes. Upperlimit of νμ‐ντ oscillation rate is also estimated depending to the present statistics.

Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: A relative measurement of total cross-sections is reported for polyethylene, marble, iron, and lead targets for the inclusive charged-current reaction nu(mu) + N --> mu- + X. The targets, passive blocks of similar to100 kg each, were exposed simultaneously to the CERN SPS wide-band muon-neutrino beam over a period of 18 weeks. Systematic effects due to differences in the neutrino flux and detector efficiency for the different target locations were minimised by changing the position of the four targets on their support about every two weeks. The relative neutrino fluxes on the targets were monitored within the same experiment using charged-current interactions in the calorimeter positioned directly downstream of the four targets. From a fit to the Z/A dependence of the total cross-sections a value is deduced for the effective neutron-to-proton cross-section ratio.
