Abstract: OPERA is a long-baseline experiment designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode. It was based at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory (LNGS) and took data from 2008 to 2012 with the CNGS neutrino beam from CERN. After the discovery of $\nu_\tau$ appearance in 2015, with $5.1\sigma$ significance, the criteria to select $\nu_\tau$ candidates have been extended and a multivariate approach has been used for events identification. In this way the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of $\nu_\tau$ properties has been improved. Abstract: The OPERA neutrino experiment is designed to perform the first observation of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the ν μ → ν τ channel, via the detection of the τ-leptons created in charged current ν τ interactions. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consists of an emulsion/lead target with an average mass of about 1.2 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It is exposed to the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam, with a baseline of 730 km and a mean energy of 17 GeV. The observation of the first ν τ candidate event and the analysis of the 2008-2009 neutrino sample have been reported in previous publications. This work describes substantial improvements in the analysis and in the evaluation of the detection efficiencies and backgrounds using new simulation tools. The analysis is extended to a sub-sample of 2010 and 2011 data, resulting from an electronic detector-based pre-selection, in which an additional ν τ candidate has been observed. Abstract: The experimental apparatus used for the first direct observation of the tau neutrino (the DONUT experiment) is described. Its main features consisted of a target system composed of nuclear emulsion targets and scintillation fiber trackers, a magnetic charged-particle spectrometer and detectors for lepton identification. This paper will concentrate on the description of the electronic detectors and their performance in selecting neutrino interactions, making the vertex predictions necessary for locating events in the emulsion target and lepton identification.

Abstract: The DONUT experiment used an emulsion/counter-hybrid-detector, which succeeded in detecting tau–neutrino charged-current interactions. A new method of emulsion analysis, NETSCAN, was used to locate neutrino events and detect tau decays. It is based on a fully automated emulsion readout system (Ultra Track Selector) developed at Nagoya University. The achieved plate-to-plate alignment accuracy of ∼0.2 μm over an area of 2.6 mm ×2.6 mm permitted an efficient and systematic tau decay search using emulsion data. Moreover, this accuracy allowed measurement of particle momenta by multiple Coulomb scattering, and contributed to the efficient background rejection for the ντ candidates. This paper describes details of our emulsion analysis methods.

Abstract: Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for ντ charged current interactions followed by the τ lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for νμ→ντ oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no τ− candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for ντ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36 182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin22θμτ

Abstract: A measurement of ?c+ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a subsample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector, exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in A+ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product ?(?c+)/?(CC) × BR(?c+ › 3p) was measured to be (0.37 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.02(syst)) × 10-2, while the values of (1.54 ± 0.35(stat) ± 0.18(syst)) × 10-2 and of 0.24 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) were obtained for ?(?c+)/?(CC) and BR(?c+ › 3p), respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: CHORUS is an experiment searching for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a hybrid setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for nu(tau) charged current interactions where the tau lepton decays to mu(mu)nu(tau). In a sample of 31,423 nu(mu) charged current interactions, no nu(tau) candidates were found. For large Delta m(mu tau)(2) values, a limit on the mixing angle of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 3.5 x 10(-3) at 90% C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result. Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the CERN-SPS Wide Band Neutrino Beam. The improvements of the past few years in the automatic emulsion scanning systems allowed a sample of events located in emulsion to be used for studies of charm production. Based on a sample of 56172vμu charged-current interactions analysed so far, we find a value of Bμ = 0.093 ± 0.009(stat.) ± 0.009(syst.) for the semi-leptonic branching fraction of charm hadrons. The result for events with visible energy larger than 30 GeV, Bμ = 0.102 ± 0.016(stat.) ± 0.010(syst.), can be combined with the existing measurements of the dimuon rate to yield a value of 0.219 ± 0.022 for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element \Vcd\. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The production of charmed particles has been measured using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam. The relative cross section for charged current charmed particle production is σ(v → μ−c)/σ(v → μ−) = 6.5 ±1.91.8%, and the energy dependence of the cross section is presented. One event with charm pair production was observed. A limit of σ(v → μcc)/σ(v → μc) < 6% (90% CL) is found for the ratio of charged current pair and single charm production.

Abstract: The OPERA experiment is searching for νμ ν τ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. via the direct detection of \tau leptons in \nu -\tau charged-current interactions. The evidence of \nu -\mu \rightarrow \nu -\tau appearance has been previously reported with three \nu -\tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth \nu -\tau candidate event, with the \tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The CHORUS experiment, designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations, consists of a nuclear emulsion target and electronic detectors. In this paper, results on the production of charged particles in a small sample of charged-current neutrino-- and anti-neutrino--nucleus interactions at high energy are presented. For each event, the emission angle and the ionization features of the charged particles produced in the interaction are recorded, while the standard kinematic variables are reconstructed using the electronic detectors. The average multiplicities for charged tracks, the pseudo-rapidity distributions, the dispersion in the multiplicity of charged particles and the KNO scaling are studied in different kinematical regions. A study of quasi-elastic topologies performed for the first time in nuclear emulsions is also reported. The results are presented in a form suitable for use in the validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino--nucleus interactions., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: In this paper a search for associated charm production both in neutral and charged current $\nu$-nucleus interactions is presented. The improvement of automatic scanning systems in the {CHORUS} experiment allows an efficient search to be performed in emulsion for short-lived particles. Hence a search for rare processes, like the associated charm production, becomes possible through the observation of the double charm-decay topology with a very low background. About 130,000 $\nu$ interactions located in the emulsion target have been analysed. Three events with two charm decays have been observed in the neutral-current sample with an estimated background of 0.18$\pm$0.05. The relative rate of the associated charm cross-section in deep inelastic $\nu$ interactions, $\sigma(c\bar{c}\nu)/\sigma_\mathrm{NC}^\mathrm{DIS}= (3.62^{+2.95}_{-2.42}({stat})\pm 0.54({syst}))\times 10^{-3}$ has been measured. One event with two charm decays has been observed in charged-current $\nu_\mu$ interactions with an estimated background of 0.18$\pm$0.06 and the upper limit on associated charm production in charged-current interactions at 90% C.L. has been found to be $\sigma (c\bar{c} \mu^-)/\sigma_\mathrm{CC} < 9.69 \times 10^{-4}$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The OPERA experiment was designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. by detecting the $\tau$-leptons produced in charged current $\nu_{\tau}$ interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a sub-sample of the data, was previously reported. In this paper, a fifth $\nu_{\tau}$ candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow assessing the discovery of $\nu_{\mu}\rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5 $\sigma$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: After completion of the data taking for the ?µ›?? oscillation search, the CHORUS lead-scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. The neutrino-nucleon and anti-neutrino-nucleon differential cross-sections are measured in the range 0.01

Abstract: Observation of J/? production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band ?µ beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section ?J/? = (6.3 ± 3.0) × 10-41 cm2 is obtained for 20 GeV ? E? ? 200 GeV. The data are compared with the theoretical model based on the QCD Z-gluon fusion mechanism. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
