Summary The spatiotemporal distribution of multiple components and phases governs their evaporation and condensation at the liquid-vapor interface. However, in situ methods to characterize the distribution remain challenging, despite the significance of understanding the ubiquitous mass transport phenomena. Here, we introduce high-resolution neutron imaging as a versatile method to quantify the composition of a sessile droplet in situ, under evaporation and condensation. To prove the concept, we perform a neutron transmittance analysis of a sessile heavy water (D2O) droplet and measure the fraction change of H2O to D2O by the sorption of ambient H2O vapor during the evaporation. Our observations are consistent with ex situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements and our diffusion-based numerical model. Our results demonstrate that, with deuterated components having a physicochemical similarity with their hydrogenated counterparts, high-resolution neutron imaging can trace composition changes in nonequilibrium phenomena, such as evaporation and condensation.

High-resolution neutron imaging is difficult, due to the low-light output of neutron scintillators, and the spread of light within common neutron-sensitive scintillators as well as the spread of intermediate particles occurring during the detection process. To address this issue, we have developed a high-resolution scintillator for neutron imaging by combining enriched 10B with the well-known CsI:Tl scintillator films. CsI:Tl has excellent properties for X-ray imaging applications, due to a high light yield of 60 000 photons/MeV, and high spatial resolution, which derives from its microcolumnar structure, which channels scintillation light to the photodetector. To enable CsI:Tl to detect neutrons, 10B (96% enriched) was deposited by electron beam directly onto the CsI:Tl film, making a layered scintillator structure in which the alphas produced by the neutron interaction with 10B are detected in the CsI:Tl. The 10B layer was approximately $3~\mu \text{m}$ thick, while the thickness of the CsI:Tl film was $11~\mu \text{m}$ . These novel layered scintillators were integrated into the high-resolution neutron imaging detector [“Paul Scherer Institute (PSI) Neutron Microscope”] at the Pulse OverLap DIffractometer (POLDI) beamline at the PSI. With our 10B/CsI:Tl scintillator, we were able to achieve a spatial resolution down to $9~\mu \text{m}$ . To demonstrate the effectiveness of the layered scintillator, we present results obtained by thermal neutron imaging as well as high-resolution neutron-computed tomography. Finally, we believe there is considerable scope for future optimization of the performance of this system.

We demonstrate a simple single grating beam modulation technique, which enables the use of a highly intense neutron beam for differential phase and dark-field contrast imaging and thus spatially resolved structural correlation measurements in full analogy to interferometric methods. In contrast to these interferometric approaches our method is intrinsically achromatic and provides unprecedented flexibility in the choice of experimental parameters. In particular the method enables straight forward application of quantitative dark-field contrast imaging in time-of-flight mode at pulsed neutron sources. Utilizing merely a macroscopic absorption mask unparalleled length scales become accessible. We present results of quantitative dark-field contrast imaging combining microstructural small angle scattering analyses with real space imaging for a variety of materials.

Coating load and distribution in gas diffusion layers (GDLs) for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) have a major influence on mass transport losses. To be able to optimize the coating distribution and get more accurate data about the influence of the coating on the PEFC performance, better characterization techniques are necessary. Common analysis techniques are limited to selected sections of the material, or they are not sensitive to small amounts of coating. We propose a new methodology to get a complete description of the coating distribution and the GDL structure by combining high-resolution X-ray tomography with high-resolution neutron tomography. Using an isotopic gadolinium staining method to enhance the neutron and X-ray absorption contrast, lower quantities of coating can be detected. Just after the start into the new millennium the concept for combined neutron and X-ray imaging was introduced by extending the standard configuration of the thermal neutron imaging NEUTRA instrument with a complementary 320 kV X-ray tube setup. Using essentially the same detector configuration for both neutron and X-ray imaging enables a pixel-wise (in radiography) and a voxel-wise (in tomography) correlation and combination of attenuation data. The optimal use and analyses of such complementary data sets depend on the specific investigation and research question and range from a combinatory interpretation of separately analyzed images to full data fusion approaches. Here, several examples from more than a decade of bimodal neutron and X-ray imaging at NEUTRA at PSI shall be reviewed.

This paper reports on light yield enhancement of terbium-doped gadolinium oxysulfide based scintillator screens achieved by coating their substrates with thin layers of a high density and high atomic number material. For this purpose, iridium was chosen and layers of various thicknesses were applied by atomic layer deposition (ALD). We assessed newly developed scintillator screens for neutron absorption, light yield and spatial resolution and compared them to previously used non-iridium-coated scintillator screens. The addition of the iridium layer resulted in 65 % light yield enhancement in comparison to uncoated scintillator screens while the spatial resolution and absorption power remained unchanged., MethodsX, 6, ISSN:2215-0161

NEURAP is a dedicated set-up at the Swiss neutron spallation source (SINQ) at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), optionally implemented as a special configuration of the neutron-imaging station NEUTRA. It is one of very few instrumentations available worldwide enabling neutron-imaging of highly radioactive samples to be performed routinely, with special precautions and following a specific procedure. Since the relevant objects are strong γ-sources, dedicated techniques are needed to handle the samples and to perform neutron-imaging despite the radiation background. Dysprosium (Dy)-loaded imaging plates, effectively made sensitive to neutrons only, are employed. Neutrons are captured by Dy during neutron irradiation. Then the imaging plate is erased removing gamma detections. A subsequent relatively long self-exposure by the radiation from the intrinsic neutron-activated Dy within the imaging plate yields the neutron-only radiograph that is finally read out. During more than 20 years of NEURAP operation, images have been obtained for two major applications: (a) highly radioactive SINQ target components were investigated after long-term operation life; and (b) spent fuel rods and their cladding from Swiss nuclear power plants were characterized. Quantitative analysis of the image data demonstrated the accumulation of spallation products in the lead filled “Cannelloni” Zircaloy tubes of the SINQ target and the aggregation of hydrogen at specific sites in used fuel pins of power plants and their cladding, respectively. These results continue to help understanding material degradation and optimizing the operational regimes, which might lead to extending the safe lifetimes of these components.

In metallurgical processing, non-metallic inclusions contaminating metallic materials are one highly relevant challenge. Bubble injection into molten metals boosts the inclusion control and removal, thus enhancing metal homogenisation and purification. Although this principle of bubble flotation has been used for a long time, the effects of bubble–inclusion interactions in molten metals are not yet well researched. Imaging measurements of multiphase metal flows are challenging for two main reasons: the metals’ high melting temperatures and their opaqueness for visible light. This work focuses on X-ray and neutron radiographic experiments employing low-melting gallium alloys laden with model particles smaller than 1 mm in diameter. Both, bubbles and particles, are visualised simultaneously with high spatial and temporal resolution in order to analyse their motions by tracking algorithms. We demonstrate the capability of time-resolved X-ray and neutron radiography to image multiphase flows in particle-laden and optically opaque liquid metals, thus contributing to pave the way for systematic investigations on bubble–inclusion interactions in molten metals.

The fast neutron imaging technique with recoil proton detection harbors significant potential for imaging of thick, large-scale objects containing high-Z elements. However, the challenge to find efficient fast neutron scintillators with high spatial resolution is ongoing. The list of requirements for such scintillators is long and demanding: a proton-rich, scattering-free material combining high light yield with the absence of light reabsorption. To meet these challenges, we look for a suitable material among a rising class of 0D organic-inorganic Pb(II) halide hybrids. The use of large organic cations, e.g., trihexyltetradecylphosphonium, results in room-temperature ionic liquids that combine highly Stokes-shifted (up to 1.7 eV), reabsorption-free, and efficient emission (photoluminescence quantum yield up to 60%) from molecularly small and dense (PbX2 molar fraction up to 0.33) emitting centers. We investigate the optical properties of the resulting ionic liquids and showcase their utility as fast neutron imaging scintillators. Concomitantly with good light yield, such fast-neutron scintillators exhibit both higher spatial resolution and lower γ-ray sensitivity compared with commercial ZnS:Cu-based screens., ACS Photonics, 8 (11), ISSN:2330-4022

This work presents the fabrication and experimental evaluation of instrumentation designed to enable higher spatial resolution neutron radiography for those performing research at neutron scattering facilities. Herein, we describe a proof-of-concept array of microstructured silicate fibers with 6Li doped cores that shows progress towards a design for μ m resolution neutron radiography. The multicore fiber was fabricated by drawing stacked unit elements of Guardian Glass (Nucsafe Inc., Oak Ridge, TN, USA), a 6Li scintillating core glass, and a silicate cladding glass. These structured fibers function as an array of sub-10- μ m waveguides for scintillation light. Measurements have shown a significantly increased integrated charge distribution in response to neutrons, and the spatial resolution of the radiographs is described by edge response and line spread functions of 48 ± 4 μ m and 59 ± 8 μ m , respectively.

Within neutron imaging, different methods have been developed with the aim to go beyond the conventional contrast modalities, such as grating interferometry. Existing grating interferometers are sensitive to scattering in a single direction only, and thus investigations of anisotropic scattering structures imply the need for a circular scan of either the sample or the gratings. Here we propose an approach that allows assessment of anisotropic scattering in a single acquisition mode and to broaden the range of the investigation with respect to the probed correlation lengths. This is achieved by a far-field grating interferometer with a tailored 2D-design. The combination of a directional neutron dark-field imaging approach with a scan of the sample to detector distance yields to the characterization of the local 2D real-space correlation functions of a strongly oriented sample analogous to conventional small-angle scattering. Our results usher in quantitative and spatially resolved investigations of anisotropic and strongly oriented systems beyond current capabilities., Communications Physics, 3 (1)

This article reports on the simultaneous measurement of foam structure and attached particles employing neutron imaging. An aqueous foam sample is placed in the NEUTRA beamline at the Paul Scherrer Institut, enabling a spatial resolution of less than 200 μ m to be achieved at a frame rate of more than 1 Hz. A forced drainage setup allows the liquid content of the foam to be controlled. The averaged attenuation of the neutrons is demonstrated to yield the liquid fraction of the foam. Hydrophobized gadolinium particles with a diameter of 200 μ m are added to the foam. Using two surfactants, different levels of hydrophobicity are achieved. Depending on the drainage flow and the hydrophobicity, the particles are washed out of the foam at different rates. An avalanche-like motion of particle clusters is observed. Neutron radiography is demonstrated to yield unique insights into the unsteady froth flotation process.

Neutron imaging has been used for nearly two decades to visualize the water distribution in operating polymer electrolyte fuel cells and address various issues related to water management. Its range of application ranges from small scale cells of a few cm 2 to full-size technical cells, and the high penetration of neutrons through usual fuel cell structural materials make this technique particularly attractive for in situ studies. We present here an overview of the recent advances in this method and its application to fuel cell research, and discuss the prospects for the future on a selection of topics: the combination with advanced instrumentation, the imaging of catalyst layers, and the possibilities to go beyond the simple visualization of water.

Neutron imaging of sub-10-micrometres spatial resolution has been recently achieved in 2D mode within the framework of the Neutron Microscope project at the Paul Scherrer Institut. Here we report on the development of the PSI Neutron Microscope instrument and the results of the first microtomographic imaging experiment of multifilament superconducting MgB 2 wire. The sample of MgB 2 superconducting 37 multifilaments embedded in copper-nickel matrix was investigated –in microtomographic mode– with the scientific interest regarding the distribution of boron within the individual superconducting filaments (about 40 μm in diameter). The resulting tomographic dataset revealed the distribution of boron within the entire 0.8 mm thick multifilamental wire with the isotropic voxel size of 2.6 micrometres.

Within this paper we summarize new approaches for the utilization of neutron beams for imaging purposes. Whereas most of the methods are still based on the radiography mode - however now with higher performance with respect to spatial resolution, dynamic range and linearity (obtained often in short exposure time) - the new aspects of using polarized neutrons, the diffracted neutron signal or grating interferometers are linking towards neutron scattering investigations. Many of the new techniques have already found their user community, while some of them are based on users demands themselves. The further progress in the field depends much on the access to useful beam ports at suitable neutron sources.

The improvement of neutron imaging towards and beyond the microscale is a well-documented need for the iterative characterization and modeling of numerous microstructured X-ray opaque materials. This work presents the recent progress in evaluating a SCIntillating FIber (SCIFI) proof-of-concept towards micron-level thermal neutron radiography. These SCIFIs are composed of 6Li-enriched silicate glass cores doped with a Ce activator. The cores possess ∼8.5 μm diameters and ∼10 μm pitch following fiber drawing with a cladding glass into an all-solid multicore fiber. A polished 5 mm × 5 mm array of 100 microstructured multicore SCIFI pixels was fabricated into a 1 mm thick faceplate. The neutron efficiency and light yield of the faceplate are characterized as functions of the 7.38 weight percent of Li2O, thickness, and the 70% active volume. It was determined that approximately 39% of a thermal neutron ( $\text{2 }$ A) beam can be absorbed by the faceplate. The $^6{\rm{Li}}({n,\; \alpha })t$ reaction is estimated to produce 7,700 ± 1,000 scintillation photons per event, referencing light collection from 241Am irradiation of the faceplate. Simulations suggest that on average 17.5 ± 1.4% of these photons will be transported to an end of the fiber array for a thermal beam, with at least 7.2% of that total scintillation light being confined into the fiber cores in which it originated. The SCIFI faceplate was integrated into the Neutron Microscope (NM) at the Pulse OverLap DIffractometer (POLDI) beamline located at the Paul Scherrer Institut to image a Siemens star test object. Processed neutron radiographs acquired with the proof-of-concept faceplate resolved features at a state-of-the-art resolution of 16.1 ± 0.5 μm. The potential for even high resolution designs having smaller pitch or different cladding material is discussed.

A crucial criterion for the quality of the additively manufactured parts is the porosity content for achieving an acceptable final relative density. In addition, for jewelry applications, visible pores are unacceptable at or in the vicinity of the surface. In this study, non-destructive 3D neutron microtomography is applied to map the spatial distribution of pores in additively manufactured red-gold samples. The 3D imaging assessment underlines the high relative density of the printed red-gold sample and indicates residual pore sizes are predominantly below the limit of concern for jewelry applications. The 3D maps of pores within printed samples highlight the effect of the scanning strategy on the final quality and location of pores in the printed samples. These results confirm that neutron microtomography is a novel and precise tool to characterize residual porosity in additively manufactured gold alloys and other higher-Z materials where such investigation using other non-destructive methods (such as X-rays) is challenging due to the limited penetration depth.

Lithium indium diselenide, 6 LiInSe 2 or LISe, is a newly developed neutron detection material that shows both semiconducting and scintillating properties. This paper reports on the performance of scintillating LISe crystals for its potential use as a converter screen for cold neutron imaging. The spatial resolution of LISe, determined using a 10% threshold of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), was found to not scale linearly with thickness. Crystals having a thickness of 450 µm or larger resulted in an average spatial resolution of 67 µm, and the thinner crystals exhibited an increase in spatial resolution down to the Nyquist frequency of the CCD. The highest measured spatial resolution of 198 µm thick LISe (27 µm) outperforms a commercial 50 µm thick ZnS(Cu): 6 LiF scintillation screen by more than a factor of three. For the LISe dimensions considered in this study, it was found that the light yield of LISe did not scale with its thickness. However, absorption measurements indicate that the 6 Li concentration is uniform and the neutron absorption efficiency of LISe as a function of thickness follows general nuclear theory. This suggests that the differences in apparent brightness observed for the LISe samples investigated may be due to a combination of secondary charged particle escape, scintillation light transport in the bulk and across the LISe-air interface, and variations in the activation of the scintillation mechanism. Finally, it was found that the presence of 115 In and its long-lived 116 In activation product did not result in ghosting (memory of past neutron exposure), demonstrating potential of LISe for imaging transient systems.

The unique possibilities enabled by neutron imaging for in situ remote diagnostics of microstructural characteristics during crystal growth are demonstrated, even when the materials and surrounding structures are opaque to other more conventional interrogation techniques. Neutron radiography is implemented to image remotely the uniformity of elemental distribution (e.g. dopant concentration) during crystal growth, the location of the liquid/solid interface and the presence of macroscopic crystal defects (e.g. cracks), all with a temporal resolution of 5–7 s., Neutrons are known to be unique probes in situations where other types of radiation fail to penetrate samples and their surrounding structures. In this paper it is demonstrated how thermal and cold neutron radiography can provide time-resolved imaging of materials while they are being processed (e.g. while growing single crystals). The processing equipment, in this case furnaces, and the scintillator materials are opaque to conventional X-ray interrogation techniques. The distribution of the europium activator within a BaBrCl:Eu scintillator (0.1 and 0.5% nominal doping concentrations per mole) is studied in situ during the melting and solidification processes with a temporal resolution of 5–7 s. The strong tendency of the Eu dopant to segregate during the solidification process is observed in repeated cycles, with Eu forming clusters on multiple length scales (only for clusters larger than ∼50 µm, as limited by the resolution of the present experiments). It is also demonstrated that the dopant concentration can be quantified even for very low concentration levels (∼0.1%) in 10 mm thick samples. The interface between the solid and liquid phases can also be imaged, provided there is a sufficient change in concentration of one of the elements with a sufficient neutron attenuation cross section. Tomographic imaging of the BaBrCl:0.1%Eu sample reveals a strong correlation between crystal fractures and Eu-deficient clusters. The results of these experiments demonstrate the unique capabilities of neutron imaging for in situ diagnostics and the optimization of crystal-growth procedures.

Graphical abstract, The recent developments in scientific complementary metal oxide semiconductor (sCMOS) detector technology allow for imaging of relevant processes with very high temporal resolution with practically negligible readout time. However, it is neutron intensity that limits the high temporal resolution neutron imaging. In order to partially overcome the neutron intensity problem for the high temporal resolution imaging, a parabolic neutron focussing guide was utilized in the test arrangement and placed upstream the detector in such a manner that the focal point of the guide was positioned slightly behind the scintillator screen. In such a test arrangement, the neutron flux can be increased locally by about one order of magnitude, albeit with the reduced spatial resolution due to the increased divergence of the neutron beam. In a pilot test application, an in-situ titration system allowing for a remote delivery of well-defined volumes of liquids onto the sample stage was utilized. The process of droplets of water (H2O) falling into the container filled with heavy water (D2O) and the subsequent process of the interaction and mixing of the two liquids were imaged with temporal resolution of 0.01 s. • Combination of neutron focussing device and use of sCMOS detector allows for very high temporal resolution neutron imaging to be achieved (albeit with reduced spatial resolution and field of view). • In-situ neutron imaging titration device for liquid interaction experiments. • Interaction of otherwise indiscernible liquids (H2O and D2O) visualized using neutron radiography with 0.01 s temporal resolution.

Graphical abstract, This paper describes a device that allows for simultaneous tomographic imaging of samples on three independent rotational axes. This rotation axis demultiplexer (POLYTOM) is equipped with anti-backlash gears and placed on a standard sample rotation stage thus allowing for the transformation of the input rotation axis onto two additional parallel vertical axes. Consequently, three times the number of samples can be investigated within a given time period, thereby reducing the acquisition time of multiple sample tomographic investigations by a factor of three. The results of our pilot experiments using neutron tomographic imaging are presented. We foresee that the device will be of particular use for tomographic imaging of elongated samples at low-flux (e.g. neutron) sources; however, its use for the more widespread types of imaging techniques (e.g. X-rays) is not ruled out. The highlights of this new device for the purpose of the (neutron) computed tomography are: • Anti-backlash transformation of the input rotation onto two additional rotational axes. • Reduction of the acquisition time of the multiple sample tomographic investigations by a factor of three. • Low-cost.

We propose a method for improving the quantification of neutron imaging measurements with scintillator-camera based detectors by correcting for systematic biases introduced by scattered neutrons and other sources such as light reflections in the detector system. This method is fully experimental, using reference measurements with a grid of small black bodies (BB) to measure the bias contributions directly. Using two test samples, one made of lead alloy and having a moderate (20%) neutron transmission and one made of stainless-steel and having a very low (1%) transmission, we evaluated the improvement brought by this method in reducing both the average quantification bias and the uncertainty around this average bias after tomographic reconstruction. The results show that a reduction of the quantification bias of up to one order of magnitude can be obtained. For moderately transparent samples, little sensitivity is observed to the parameters used for the correction. For the more challenging sample with very low transmission, a correct placement of the BB grid is of utmost importance for a successful correction.

Spatially resolved neutron diffractive imaging with a microchannel plate collimator is used to directly map the nucleation of the skyrmion lattice (SkL) of the B20 compound MnSi at the conical to SkL transition as a function of magnetic field. Our study shows a macroscopic phase separation of the SkL and the conical phase at the border of the SkL phase pocket, reveals that the nucleation of the SkL starts at the edges of the sample, and quantifies the bending of the SkL due to demagnetization. Our study highlights the importance of geometric and demagnetizing effects for the SkL formation regarding the unambiguous interpretation of measurements of bulk properties such as possible phase coexistence and crossover regimes.

International audience; The possibility of observing the light from single neutron detection in scintillation materials by highly pixelated silicon sensors coupled with a demagnification optical lens could lead to a new generation of position-sensitive neutron detectors with relatively large area coverage and competitive spatial resolution. Several ZnS/6LiF-based scintillators were tested at the SINQ Beamline for Neutron Optics (BOA) using a neutron radiography setup mounting a sCMOS camera with an f/0.95 commercial objective. Single neutrons were identified and distinguished from the camera noise and particles detected directly in the silicon sensor in all the tested scintillators, with exposures starting from 1 ms. Linearity between neutron counting and exposure times was obtained from 10 ms up to 200 ms.

Structural properties of cohesive powders are dominated by their microstructural composition. Powders with a fractal microstructure show particularly interesting properties during compaction where a microstructural transition and a fractal breakdown happen before compaction and force transport. The study of this phenomenon has been challenging due to its long-range effect and the subsequent necessity to characterize these microstructural changes on a macroscopic scale. For the detailed investigation of the complex nature of powder compaction for various densification states along with the heterogeneous breakdown of the fractal microstructure we applied neutron dark-field imaging in combination with a variety of supporting techniques with various spatial resolutions, field-of-views and information depths. We used scanning electron microscopy to image the surface microstructure in a small field-of-view and X-ray tomography to image density variations in 3D with lower spatial resolution. Non-local spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering results are used to evaluate fitting models later used as input parameters for the neutron dark-field imaging data analysis. Finally, neutron dark-field imaging results in combination with supporting measurements using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray tomography and spin-echo small angle scattering allowed us to comprehensively study the heterogeneous transition from a fractal to a homogeneous microstructure of a cohesive powder in a quantitative manner.

This paper presents qualitative and quantitative characterization of two-phase liquid metal flows agitated by the stirrer on rotating permanent magnets. The stirrer was designed to fulfill various eddy flows, which may have different rates of solid particle entrapment from the liquid surface and their homogenization. The flow was characterized by visualization of the tailored tracer particles by means of dynamic neutron radiography, an experimental method well suited for liquid metal flows due to low opacity of some metals for neutrons. The rather high temporal resolution of the image acquisition (32 Hz image acquisition rate) allows for the quantitative investigation of the flows up to 30 cm/s using neutron particle image velocimetry. In situ visualization of the two-phase liquid metal flow is also demonstrated.

A sealed sample of cement paste containing a pre-wetted and a dry lightweight aggregate (LWA) particle was investigated in the period between 0.5 and 20.3 h after mixing. Changes in the local water distribution in the sample during hydration were evaluated using the subtraction of 3D images obtained by subsequent neutron tomographies (NT). As both water retention in the LWA and its release to the cement paste are influenced by the pore structure of the aggregate, a high-resolution image of the sample was subsequently captured by X-ray tomography. The internal curing water released from the LWA traveled at least 3 mm from the LWA into the cement paste in the first day. Hardly any gradient in the water content of the cement paste against the distance from the LWA was observed. This suggests that the release of water for internal curing (IC) is relatively fast and the water is distributed fairly homogeneously from the LWA for at least 3 mm within the hydrating cement paste.

Computed tomography provides 3D information of inner structures of investigated objects. The obtained information is, however, strongly dependent on the used radiation type. It is known that as X-rays interact with electron cloud and neutrons with atomic nucleus, the obtained data often provide different contrast of sample structures. In this work we present a set of comparative radiographic and CT measurements of rare fossil plant samples using X-rays and thermal neutrons. The X-ray measurements were performed using large area photon counting detectors Timepix at IEAP CTU in Prague and Perkin Elmer flat-panel detector at Center of Excellence Telc. The neutron CT measurement was carried out at Paul Scherrer Institute using BOA beam-line. Furthermore, neutron radiography of fossil samples, provided by National Museum, were performed using a large-area Timepix detector with a neutron-sensitive converting 6LiF layer at Research Centre Rez, Czech Republic. The obtained results show different capabilities of both imaging approaches. While X-ray micro-CT provides very high resolution and enables visualization of fine cracks or small cavities in the samples neutron imaging provides high contrast of morphological structures of fossil plant samples, where X-ray imaging provides insufficient contrast.

Neutron scattering and neutron imaging are activities at the strong neutron sources which have been developed rather independently. However, there are similarities and overlaps in the research topics to which both methods can contribute and thus useful synergies can be found. In particular, the spatial resolution of neutron imaging has improved recently, which - together with the enhancement of the efficiency in data acquisition- can be exploited to narrow the energy band and to implement more sophisticated methods like neutron grating interferometry. This paper provides a report about the current options in neutron imaging and describes how the gap to neutron scattering data can be closed in the future, e.g. by diffractive imaging, the use of polarized neutrons and the dark-field imagining of relevant materials. This overview is focused onto the interaction between neutron imaging and neutron scattering with the aim of synergy. It reflects mainly the authors' experiences at their PSI facilities without ignoring the activities at the different other labs world-wide.

Here we report the recent advances in the Neutron Microscope project at the Paul Scherrer Institut. We demonstrate the recent improvement on the capability of neutron imaging that allows us to acquire neutron images with isotropic spatial resolution of about 5 micrometres.
