Abstract

The neutron spectrum from the 55Mn(d, n)56Fe reaction has been measured at Ed = 7 MeV. The level density of 56Fe obtained from neutron evaporation spectrum has been compared to the level density obtained from Oslo-type 57Fe(3He, αγ)56Fe experiment. The good agreement supports the recent results including the low-energy enhancement in the γ-strength function for iron isotopes. The new level density function allowed us to investigate an excitation energy dependence of this enhancement, which is shown to increase with increasing excitation energy. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two-step-cascade spectra of the 171Yb(n, γγ)172Yb reaction have been measured using thermal neutrons. They are compared to calculations based on experimental values of the level density and radiative strength function obtained from the 173Yb(3He, αγ)172Yb reaction. The multipolarity of a 6.5(15) μN2 resonance at 3.3(1) MeV in the strength function is determined to be M1 by this comparison.© 2004 MAIK “Nauka / Interperiodica”. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Understanding the evolution of level densities in the crossover from spherical to well-deformed nuclei has been a long-standing problem in nuclear physics. We measure nuclear level densities for a chain of neodymium isotopes 142,144−151Nd which exhibit such a crossover. These results represent the most complete data set of nuclear level densities to date for an isotopic chain between neutron shell-closure and towards mid-shell. We observe a strong increase of the level densities along the chain with an overall increase by a factor of ≈150 at an excitation energy of 6 MeV and saturation around mass 150. Level densities calculated by the shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) are in excellent agreement with these experimental results. Based on our experimental and theoretical findings, we offer an explanation of the observed mass dependence of the level densities in terms of the intrinsic single-particle level density and the collective enhancement.
