We report on the first experiment dedicated to the study of nuclear reactions on dopants in a cryogenic capsule at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). This was accomplished using bromine doping in the inner layers of the CH ablator of a capsule identical to that used in the NIF shot N140520. The capsule was doped with 3 × 1016 bromine atoms. The doped capsule shot, N170730, resulted in a DT yield that was 2.6 times lower than the undoped equivalent. The Radiochemical Analysis of Gaseous Samples (RAGS) system was used to collect and detect 79Kr atoms resulting from energetic deuteron and proton ion reactions on 79Br. RAGS was also used to detect 13N produced dominantly by knock-on deuteron reactions on the 12C in the ablator. High-energy reaction-in-flight neutrons were detected via the 209Bi(n,4n)206Bi reaction, using bismuth activation foils located 50 cm outside of the target capsule. The robustness of the RAGS signals suggests that the use of nuclear reactions on dopants as diagnostics is quite feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In support of future radiation-effects testing, a combined environment source has been developed for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), utilizing both NIF's long-pulse beams, and the Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) short pulse lasers. First, ARC was used to illuminate a gold foil at high-intensity, generating a significant x-ray signal > 1 MeV. This was followed by NIF 10 ns later to implode an exploding pusher target filled with fusionable gas for neutron generation. The neutron and x-ray bursts were incident onto a retrievable, close-standoff diagnostic snout. With separate control over both neutron and x-ray emission, the platform allows for tailored photon and neutron fluences and timing on a recoverable test sample. The platform exceeded its initial fluence goals, demonstrating a neutron fluence of 2.3 ×1013 n/cm2 and an x-ray dose of 7 krad. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The neutron activation of gold is the basis of an implosion performance diagnostic at the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In support of this diagnostic, a series of γ-ray spectrometric measurements of the decay of 196Aum2 (Jπ = 12−) was performed to improve the currently accepted literature values of the nuclear data associated with its half-life, γ-ray energies, and γ-ray intensities. It was determined that 196Aum2 decays with a half-life of 9.603 h ± 0.23%. The relative intensities of the γ rays emitted during its decay were also measured, and an absolute decay branch of 0.3352 ± 2.9% was determined for the emission of the 188.2 keV photon, which arises from a nuclear transition whose multipolarity is predominantly M1. Properties of other products arising in the reaction of 197Au with fast neutrons were measured, as were selected production cross sections. The 196Aum2/196Aug isomer ratio measured in the 197Au(n, 2n) reaction at 14.1 MeV was found to be 0.0731 ± 2.6%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The international monitoring system exists to verify compliance with the terms of the comprehensive test ban treaty. About 10% of the member stations will be capable of detecting radioxenon, which can be produced in nuclear detonations or through civilian processes. We have studied the activation of radioxenon by the prompt, intense spectrum of 14-MeV neutrons produced at the National Ignition Facility. While 14-MeV neutrons are not currently a significant contributor to the production of radioxenon, we find that radioxenon produced through activation of environmental xenon by 14-MeV neutrons would be distinguishable from activation by nuclear tests. For the first time, 41Ar produced by the (n,Y) reaction trom 40Ar in the beryllium shell ot a DT filled Inertial Confinement Fusion capsule has been measured. 41Ar is co-deposited with beryllium in the sputter deposition ot the capsule shell. Combined with a measurement ot the neutron yield, the radioactive 41Ar then quantifies the areal density of beryllium during the DT neutron production. The measured 1.15 ± 0.17 × 10+8 atoms of 41Ar are 2.5 times that from the best post-shot calculation, suggesting that the 41Ar and Be areal densities are correspondingly higher than those calculated. Possible explanations are that (1) the beryllium shell is compressed more than calculated, (2) beryllium has mixed into the cold DT ice, or more likely (3) less beryllium is ablated than calculated. The Magnetic Recoil neutron Spectrometer (MRS) on the National Ignition Facility measures the DT neutron spectrum from cryogenically layered inertial confinement fusion implosions. Yield, areal density, apparent ion temperature, and directional fluid flow are inferred from the MRS data. This paper describes recent advances in MRS measurements of the primary peak using new, thinner, reduced-area deuterated plastic (CD) conversion foils. The new foils allow operation of MRS at yields 2 orders of magnitude higher than previously possible, at a resolution down to ~200 keV FWHM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We determined fission yields of xenon (Xe, Xe, Xe, Xe, Xe, and Xe) resulting from 14 MeV neutron induced fission of depleted uranium at the National Ignition Facility. Measurements begin approximately 20 s after shot time, and yields have been determined for nuclides with half-lives as short as tens of seconds. We determined the relative independent yields of Xe, Xe, and Xe to significantly higher precision than previously reported. The relative fission yields of all nuclides are statistically indistinguishable from values reported by England and Rider (ENDF-349. LA-UR-94-3106, ), with exception of the cumulative yield of Xe. We present the first measurements of reaction-in-flight (RIF) neutrons in an inertial confinement fusion system. The experiments were carried out at the National Ignition Facility, using both Low Foot and High Foot drives and cryogenic plastic capsules. In both cases, the high-energy RIF (En > 15 MeV) component of the neutron spectrum was found to be about 10-4 of the total. The majority of the RIF neutrons were produced in the dense cold fuel surrounding the burning hotspot of the capsule, and the data are consistent with a compressed cold fuel that is moderately to strongly coupled T ~ 0.6) and electron degenerate θFermi=θe ~ 4). The production of RIF neutrons is controlled by the stopping power in the plasma. Thus, the current RIF measurements provide a unique test of stopping power models in an experimentally unexplored plasma regime. We find that the measured RIF data strongly constrain stopping models in warm dense plasma conditions, and some models are ruled out by our analysis of these experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high-fluence neutron spectrum produced by the National Ignition Facility (NIF) provides an opportunity to measure the activation of materials by fast-spectrum neutrons. A new large-volume gas-cell diagnostic has been designed and qualified to measure the activation of gaseous substances at the NIF. This in-chamber diagnostic is recoverable, reusable and has been successfully fielded. Data from the qualification of the diagnostic have been used to benchmark an Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code simulation describing the downscattered neutron spectrum seen by the gas cell. We present early results from the use of this diagnostic to measure the activation of natXe and discuss future work to study the strength of interactions between plasma and nuclei. The solid debris collection capability at the National Ignition Facility has been expanded to include a third line-of-sight assembly. The solid radiochemistry nuclear diagnostic measurement of the ratio of gold isotopes is dependent on the efficient collection of neutron-activated hohlraum debris by passive metal disks. The collection of target debris at this new location is more reliable in comparison to the historic locations, and it appears to be independent of collector surface ablation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe a radiochemical measurement of the ratio of isotope concentrations produced in a gold hohlraum surrounding an Inertial Confinement Fusion capsule at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). We relate the ratio of the concentrations of (n,γ) and (n,2n) products in the gold hohlraum matrix to the down-scatter of neutrons in the compressed fuel and, consequently, to the fuel's areal density. The observed ratio of the concentrations of 198m+gAu and 196gAu is a performance signature of ablator areal density and the fuel assembly confinement time. We identify the measurement of nuclear cross sections of astrophysical importance as a potential application of the neutrons generated at the NIF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Radiochemical Analysis of Gaseous Samples (RAGS) diagnostic apparatus was recently installed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Following a NIF shot, RAGS is used to pump the gas load from the NIF chamber for purification and isolation of the noble gases. After collection, the activated gaseous species are counted via gamma spectroscopy for measurement of the capsule areal density and fuel-ablator mix. Collection efficiency was determined by injecting a known amount of 135Xe into the NIF chamber, which was then collected with RAGS. Commissioning was performed with an exploding pusher capsule filled with isotopically enriched 124Xe and 126Xe added to the DT gas fill. Activated xenon species were recovered post-shot and counted via gamma spectroscopy. Results from the collection and commissioning tests are presented. The performance of RAGS allows us to establish a noble gas collection method for measurement of noble gas species produced via neutron and charged particle reactions in a NIF capsule.
