Abstract

The article offers literary criticism of the novel "The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade" by Herman Melville. Particular focus is given to an analysis of how a masquerade in the plot serves as a way to explore issues related to the relationship between acting and being a caricature. The actions of the character Egbert are examined as well as philosophies of self related to philosophers such as John Locke and Friedrich Nietzsche.
