The reliability of partial nitrification coupled with heterotrophic denitrification for the treatment of real anaerobic digester centrate produced in a wastewater treatment plant was technically and economically assessed in two sequencing batch reactors. Removal efficiencies above 90% were consistently achieved at N-ammonium loads above 1.2 g N L⁻¹ d⁻¹. Ethanol, affluent from a waste water treatment plant (biological treatment inlet) and a zero-cost liquid residue from a chemical industry containing polyethylene glycol and sorbitol were employed as carbon source for denitrification. In this last case, a total organic carbon (TOC) requirement of 4.5 g TOC g⁻¹ NO₂⁻-N was calculated. The denitrification rate was 0.26 g NO₂⁻-N g VSS⁻¹ d⁻¹ (VSS: volatile suspended solids). These results show that a carbon-rich waste can serve as a no-cost feed for denitrifying bioreactors. An in-depth economic analysis considering the main investment and operating costs of the process was developed, showing that it can suppose yearly savings above 50% with respect to the most widely used alternative of returning anaerobic digester centrate untreated to the head of the facility.

Partial nitrification of a high-strength ammonium wastewater (1150 +/- 150 mg N-NH4(+) L(-1)), mimicking reject water, was achieved in an activated sludge pilot plant with a configuration of three continuous reactors in series plus a settler. Stable and robust partial nitrification was maintained during 800 days of operation at 30 degrees C with a sludge retention time (SRT) of 8 +/- 3 days. A high volumetric ammonium oxidation rate (2.0 g N L(-1) d(-1)) was obtained with a [N-NO2-]/[N-NO(x)-] ratio of 1, i.e. full nitritation. The start-up of the partial nitrification system was quickly and successfully performed with an on-line control system using municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludge as inoculum. An ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) fraction of 72 +/- 10% was obtained after only 30 days of start-up. The applied SRT of 7-10 days with the combination of free ammonia inhibition and dissolved oxygen limitation provided the selective washout of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and an active nitrifying population with high ammonium oxidizing rates.

The starvation process of a high-rate partial nitrification system during 30 days and its controlled recovery were studied in an activated sludge pilot plant. Four ammonium-starved reactors under anoxic, aerobic and two different alternating aerobic/anoxic conditions were evaluated. The highest and the lowest decay rates of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were obtained under full aerobic (0.24 d(-1)) and full anoxic (0.11 d(-1)) conditions, respectively. The evolution of biomass activity correlated well with the AOB quantification using FISH technique. AOB fractions lower than 1% were measured in the four reactors after 23 days of starvation. The recovery of the system was achieved in only 5 days using a nitrogen loading rate (NLR) control loop, obtaining the same conditions than before the long-term starvation period with a NLR of 1.2 g N L(-1)d(-1) and 98% of nitrite accumulation in the effluent., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The present work discusses the startup and operation of different biotrickling filters during the simultaneous removal of NH, HS, and ethyl mercaptan (EM) for odor control, focusing on (a) the impact of pH control in the stability of the nitrification processes during reactor startup and (b) the crossed effects among selected pollutants and their by-products. Two biotrickling filters were packed with poplar wood chips (R1 and R2A), while a third reactor was packed with polyurethane foam (R2B). R2A and R2B presented a pH control system, whereas R1 did not. Loads of 2-10 g N-NH m h, 5-16 g S-HS m h, and 1-6 g EM m h were supplied to the bioreactors. The presence of a pH control loop in R2A and R2B proved to be crucial to avoid long startup periods and bioreactors malfunctioning due to biological activity inhibition. In addition, the impact of the presence of different concentrations of a series of N species (NH, NO, and NO) and S species (SO and S) on the performance of the two biotrickling filters was studied by increasing their load to the reactors. Sulfide oxidation proved to be the most resilient process, since it was not affected in any of the experiments, while nitrification and EM removal were severely affected. In particular, the latter was affected by SO and NO, while nitrification was significantly affected by NH. The objective of this study was to define an automatic control loop for the start-up of a high-strength nitrification system to achieve a rich nitrifying biomass from a poor nitrifying sludge by means of simulation tools. The used model considered the nitrification as a two-step model with substrate and non-competitive inhibitions. Two control strategies (on-off controller and proportional-integral (PI) controller) were designed, simulated and compared. The measured variable in the control loops was the sum of ammonium and nitrite concentrations in the effluent and the manipulated variable was the inflow. The objective in the optimisation of both controllers was to increase the inflow of the system as fast as possible without exceeding the maximum ammonium and nitrite concentrations allowed in the effluent. The optimised controllers parameters were used to simulate a 40 days start-up. The results obtained with both strategies were similar, although, the best strategy was the PI controller since it was less oscillatory and the biomass growth was slightly faster. Two-step nitrification models are generally calibrated using short-term respirometric batch experiments. Important discrepancies appear between model predictions and experimental observations just after the pulse addition since a fast transient in the OUR profile is experimentally observed. Acceleration of the OUR appears ongoing between the substrate addition and attainment of the maximum OUR value. Among the several phenomena that could contribute to this observation, the most probable cause is the limitation of reducing equivalents required for maximal ammonia monooxygenase activity at the time of substrate addition. Ignoring acceleration would result in large parameter estimation errors from respirometric batch experiments. This work proposes a simple methodology to successfully describe (not to explain) the acceleration phenomenon estimating only two parameters. Determining whether a certain compound is toxic (or inhibitor) or not to a biomass of a WWTP is crucial in order to avoid WWTP malfunction. Respirometric techniques have been commonly used to assess the toxicity of a certain compound by evaluating the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) profile obtained when a pulse of substrate is added to endogenous biomass and comparing it with the OUR profile obtained when the pulse is a mixture of substrate and the possible toxic or inhibitor (PTI). However, when using this method with biodegradable compounds some difficulties arise because the PTI consumption implies oxygen consumption as well. In this study, a modified procedure for toxicity assessment using respirometry is developed which overcomes the difficulties caused by the toxic biodegradability. This procedure is based on the comparison of different respirograms obtained with pulses of control substrate before and after adding the PTI and with a pulse of PTI and control substrate together. Moreover, some examples are shown with p-phenylenediamine and phenol as an example of toxic and inhibitor for nitrifying biomass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Internal recycle ratio is an important parameter in anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2/O) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operation. An increase in this ratio decreases nitrate and nitrite concentration in the effluent and hence improves the nitrogen removal efficiency, even though the economical cost increases simultaneously. Determining the most favourable recycle ratio taking into account both considerations is an important item in A2/O WWTP operational optimisation. In this work, the effect of recycle ratio on nitrogen removal when using different influent nitrogen loads was tested in a pilot A2/O WWTP. Experimental results obtained show how increasing the internal recycle ratio from 0 to 5 produced a 12% increase in nitrogen removal. This increase was achieved by improving N–NOx removal by 9% with an increase in N–NH4+ removal of 3%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process is the most common method for removing low quantities of ammonium from wastewater, but this is not the usual treatment for high-strength ammonium wastewater. The capacity to biologically remove the nitrogen content of a real industrial wastewater with a concentration of 5000 mg N-NH4+ L−1 is demonstrated in this work. The experimental system used is based on a two-sludge system, with a nitrifying activated sludge and a denitrifying activated sludge. This system treated real industrial wastewater for 450 days, and during this period, it showed the capacity for oxidizing all the ammonium at average nitrification rates between 0.11 and 0.18 g N-NH4+ g VSS−1 d−1. Two key process parameters were evaluated: the maximum nitrification rate (MNR) and the maximum denitrification rate (MDR). MNR was determined in continuous operation at three different temperatures: 15°C, 20°C and 25°C, obtaining values of 0.10, 0.21 and 0.37 g N-NH4+ g VSS−1 d−1, respectively. Complete denitrification was achieved using two different industrial carbon sources, one containing mainly ethanol and the other one methanol. The MDR reached with ethanol (0.64 g N-NOx− g VSS−1 d−1) was about 6 times higher than the MDR reached with methanol (0.11 g N-NOx− g VSS−1 d−1). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
