In order to clarify the effects of urea-ammonium nitrate solution (UAN) on the yield, nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE), and N2O emissions of summer maize under the condition of water and fertilizer integration, different types of nitrogen fertilizer were selected, namely, ordinary urea (urea) and UAN. Our results showed that the application of UAN was beneficial to improve the dry matter accumulation and the distribution of summer maize. Compared with urea treatment, the total nitrogen accumulation of UAN treatment was increased by 15.8%, and the harvest index was increased by 5.5%. The partial productivity, agronomic use efficiency, and recovery rate of nitrogen for UAN treatment were also increased by 9.1, 19.8, and 31.2%, respectively, compared to those of urea treatment. The soil nitrogen dependence rate treated with UAN was significantly decreased by 13.6%, compared to that of urea treatment. In addition, UAN was beneficial to reduce N2O emissions. The N2O warming potential (GWPN2O) and N2O greenhouse gas intensity (GHGIN2O) of urea treatment were 39.3 and 52.4% higher, compared to those of UAN treatment. The improvement of dry matter accumulation and distribution and nitrogen efficiency for UAN treatment were beneficial to increase the grain yield by 9.1%, compared to that of urea treatment. In conclusion, under the fertigation, the application of UAN favors higher yield and nitrogen uptake, with less soil nitrogen residue, higher NUE, and better environmental effect. In China, the most common grain crop is maize (Zea mays). The increasing pressure to meet the food demands of its growing population has pushed Chinese maize farmers toward an excessive use of chemical fertilizers, a practice which ultimately leads to a massive waste of resources and widespread environmental pollution. As a result, increasing the yield and improving the nitrogen (N) use efficiency of maize has become a critical issue for agriculture in China. This study, which analyzes the combined data from a simulation carried out using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT), a field experiment, and a household survey, explored the effectiveness of several approaches aimed at narrowing the maize yield gap and improving the N utilization efficiency in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (HHHP), the most important area for the production of summer maize in China. The various approaches we studied deploy different methods for the integrated management of N fertilizer input and the planting density. The study produced the following results: (1) For the simulated and actual maize yields, the root mean square error (RMSE), the normalized root mean squared errors (NRMSE) and the index of agreement (d) were 1,171 (kg ha–1), 12% and 0.84, respectively. These results show that the model is viable for the experiment included in the study; (2) The potential yield was 15.58 t ha–1, and the yields achieved by the super-high-yield cultivation pattern (SH), the optimized nutrient and density management pattern (ONM), the simulated farmer's practice cultivation pattern (FP) and actual farmer's practice (AFP) were 11.43, 11.06, 10.33, and 7.95 t ha–1, respectively. The yield gaps associated with the different yield levels were large; (3) For summer maize, the high yield and a high N partial factor productivity (NPFP) was found when applying a planting density of 9 plants m–2 and an N application amount of 246 kg ha–1. These results suggest that the maximum yield that can actually be achieved by optimizing the N application and planting density is less than 73% of the potential yield. Improved the utilization of fertilizer while maintaining the increased of grain yield was the focus of Chinese researchers. Nutrient uptake, distribution, and remobilization are important factors affecting the fertilizer utilization and grain yield of maize. This study aimed to provide a theoretical and practical basis for science-based, high-yielding, and high-efficiency cultivation practices by examining differences in biomass and nutrient uptake, distribution, and remobilization characteristics under three cultivation patterns. We set 12 treatments as follows: super high-yielding cultivation pattern (SH), optimized nutrient management cultivation pattern (ONM), local farmer's practice cultivation pattern (FP), and a series of nutrient omission plots, which excluded nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or potassium (K) from the three patterns. The results demonstrated that SH and ONM increased the yield and actual harvested ears by 35.4, 20.7 and by 20.2, 17.6%, respectively. Compared with the FP, SH and ONM increased biomass, N, P, and K accumulation at silking (R1 stage) by 24.4, 31.2, 39.4, and 34.8%, and by 21.7, 22.2, 31.7, and 34.8%, respectively. SH and ONM significantly increased biomass and nutrient distribution to the grains. ONM significantly increased N use efficiency. P and K use efficiency under the ONM pattern was significantly higher than under SH, but was lower than under the FP pattern over two years. This research demonstrates that ONM may significantly reduce fertilizer rates, effectively improve the nutrient remobilization efficiency and uptake at post-silking without negatively affecting grain yield, thereby increasing N use efficiency. In pursuit of maximum grain yield farmers in the North China Plain usually apply excessive N fertilizer, resulting in wasted resources and environmental pollution. To assess the economic and environmental performances of different nitrogen rates will be conductive to sustain cleaner crop production. An 8-year field experiment was carried out with four treatments, N0 (0 kg ha−1 for winter wheat and summer maize), N1 (168 kg ha−1 for winter wheat and 129 kg ha−1 for summer maize), N2 (240 kg ha−1 for winter wheat and 185 kg ha−1 for summer maize) and N3 (300 kg ha−1 for winter wheat and summer maize), on the double cropping at Dawenkou research field (36°11'N, 117°06'E), Shandong Province, China. The crop production, soil physical-chemical parameters, and greenhouse gas emission are measured and the economic and environmental performances are assessed. The optimal nitrogen rate obtained the highest grain yield of summer maize in 4 of 8 year and was equivalent to conventional N rate in the other years. The nitrogen partial factor productivity and agronomic efficiency of optimal nitrogen rate was 63% and 58% higher than that of conventional nitrogen rate. The optimal nitrogen rate effectively decreased soil bulk density and increased weight percentage of water-stable aggregate and activities of urease and invertase compared to conventional nitrogen rate, which improved soil productivity. The fertilizer nitrogen loss and global warming potential of optimal nitrogen rate reduced by 76% and 35% compared to conventional nitrogen rate. The annual greenhouse gas intensity of optimal nitrogen rate decreased by 14–35% compared to others. The net ecosystem economic budget under optimal nitrogen rate is 252–604 $ ha−1 yr.−1 higher than other addition levels. Purpose: In this study, we analyzed the effects of different maize varieties with nitrogen utilization efficiency, fertilizer type, and rate on the ammonia volatilization emission of farmland. Aimed to seek the best matching method to improve grain yield and fertilizer utilization efficiency of summer maize simultaneously. Materials and methods: In field experiments, we choose two maize varieties with different nitrogen utilization efficiency (Zhengdan958, Z and Lainong14, L) as material. Set four different fertilizer treatments (200 kg N hm−2 inorganic fertilizer (U1), 100 kg N hm−2 inorganic fertilizer (U2), 200 kg N hm−2 organic fertilizer (M1), and 100 kg N hm−2 organic fertilizer (M2) to study their effect on NH3 emission and loss, maize grain yield, and nitrogen accumulation. Results and discussion: Ammonia volatilization accounted for 8.61–21.68% of applied N. Under the same variety, ammonia volatilization accumulation after fertilization was as follows: U1 > U2 > M1 > M2. Ammonia volatilization rates increased first and then gradually decreased after the fertilization. The ammonia volatilization loss and cumulative loss increased due to increased nitrogen fertilizer application rate. The average nitrogen accumulation and harvest index of 200 kg N hm−2 N treatments were higher than 100 kg N hm−2 N treatments, and the difference between the inorganic fertilizer and organic fertilizer was not significant. In 2016 and 2017, the average yield of Zhengdan958 was 11,758.79 kg hm−2, which was 15.78% higher than that of Lainong14, and the difference between the two fertilizer types was not significant. The average yield of 200 kg N hm−2 N treatment was 11,959.42 kg hm−2, which was 20.13% higher than those of 100 kg N hm−2 N treatment. Conclusions: By changing the type of fertilizer, replacing chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizer can reduce the loss of ammonia volatilization and promote the synergistic improvement to yield and resource utilization efficiency. Among them, using nitrogen-efficient varieties and using organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizer was beneficial to reduce the loss of ammonia volatilization, increase the accumulation of nitrogen, and promote the growth of maize to obtain high yield. To explore the response of summer maize leaf senescence, photosynthetic characteristics, and yield to the depth of one-time base application of controlled-release urea, which provides a theoretical basis for the light and simplified production of summer maize. Seven treatments were set up with Zhengdan 958 as the material under field conditions, including no nitrogen fertilizer (CK), surface spreading (DP0), furrow application depth of 5 cm (DP5), 10 cm (DP10), 15 cm (DP15), 20 cm (DP20), 25 cm (DP25). The results showed that under the same nitrogen application rate, there are significant differences in the effects of summer maize leaf senescence and photosynthetic characteristics with the increase of fertilization depth, and DP10 and DP15 have the best effects. The LAI of DP10 and DP15 increased by 5.1% and 5.5% compared to DP0 at tasseling stage, and chlorophyll content increased by 6.8% and 7.3% in 10 days after tasseling. Compared with DP0, superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased by 13.1% and 10.5%, the content of soluble protein increased significantly, while the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased by 9.8% and 10.8%, respectively. In addition, Pn and Gs of the ear-leaf significantly increased by 13.9%, 16.5%, and 26.1% and 31.9% at tasseling stage, respectively, over DP0, while Ci decreased by 22.3% and 26.4%, respectively; meanwhile, the photochemical quenching (qP) and quantum yield (ΦPSII) of the reaction center of photosystem II (PSII) of the ear-leaf were significantly improved, the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was significantly reduced. The yield of DP10 and DP15 heightened significantly; two-year average value increased by 5.7% and 6.0% compared with DP0; the kernels per spike and 1000-kernels weight increased by 4.8%, 5.2%, and 4.1%, 5.2%, respectively. Comprehensive analysis of LAI, chlorophyll content, various protective enzyme activities and MDA, soluble protein content showed that 10–15 cm is the appropriate fertilization depth when the nitrogen application rate of controlled-release urea is 225 kg N per hectare. In consequence, optimizing fertilization depth of controlled-release urea as a simplified fertilization mode could improve the nitrogen utilization efficiency and obtain higher yield in summer maize, which provides technical support for large-scale application of controlled-release urea. Nitrogen (N) is a nutrient element necessary for plant growth and development. However, excessive inputs of N will lead to inefficient use and large N losses to the environment, which can adversely affect air and water quality, biodiversity and human health. To examine the effects of controlled-release fertilisers (CRF) on yield, we measured ammonia volatilisation, N use efficiency (NUE) and photosynthetic rate after anthesis in summer maize hybrid cultivar Zhengdan958. Maize was grown using common compound fertiliser (CCF), the same amount of resin-coated controlled release fertiliser (CRFIII), the same amount of sulphur-coated controlled release fertiliser (SCFIII) as CCF, 75% CRF (CRFII) and SCF (SCFII), 50% CRF (CRFI) and SCF (SCFI), and no fertiliser. We found that treatments CRFIII, SCFIII, CRFII and SCFII produced grain yields that were 13.15%, 14.15%, 9.69% and 10.04% higher than CCF. There were no significant differences in grain yield among CRFI, SCFI and CCF. We also found that the ammonia volatilisation rates of CRF were significantly lower than those of CCF. The CRF treatments reduced the emission of ammonia by 51.34% to 91.34% compared to CCF. In addition, after treatment with CRF, maize exhibited a higher net photosynthetic rate than CCF after anthesis. Agronomic NUE and apparent N recovery were higher in the CRF treatment than in the CCF treatment. The N uptake and physiological NUE of the four yield-enhanced CRF treatments were higher than those of CCF. These results suggest that the increase in NUE in the CRF treatments was generally attributable to the higher photosynthetic rate and lower ammonia volatilisation compared to CCF-treated maize. With the extensive promotion of controlled-release urea (CRU), its N-release pattern has been shown to match the crop's N-demand period and improve crop yield by reducing N losses. Nevertheless, the impacts of CRU on summer maize yield, especially on greenhouse gas emissions, have rarely been reported during its long-term use. It is necessary through long-term positioning field experiment with CRU application to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of maize yield formation, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), ammonia volatilization and greenhouse gas emissions. The long-term fertilizer positioning experiment for ten years, four treatments were performed: polymeric-coated controlled-release urea (CRF, 42% N, 3-months controlled-release period), sulfur-coated controlled-release urea (SCF, 35% N, 3-months controlled-release period), common urea (CCF, 46% N) and no nitrogen fertilizer (CK). Results showed that the two coated controlled-release fertilizers significantly increased NUE and dry matter accumulation in summer maize, and ultimately improved grain yield. Compared to CCF, CRF and SCF treatments increased post-silking dry matter accumulation by 16.3% and 13.3%; NUE by 42.3% and 28.9%. The 2-year mean grain yield of CRF and SCF treatment increased 9.0% and 12.4% compared to CCF treatment. CRF treatment significantly increased the NO 3 --N content in 0–60 cm soil layer; while CRF and SCF treatments showed a significantly higher NH 4 +-N concentration in the 0–20 cm soil layer than CCF treatment. Compared to CCF treatment, the CRF and SCF treatments significantly reduced peak ammonia volatilization, and the average cumulative emissions of ammonia volatilization of two years were reduced by 80.8% and 53.2%, respectively. CRF treatment had lower peak of N 2 O emissions but longer N 2 O emission duration than other N application treatments. The two-year average cumulative N 2 O emissions from CRF treatment increased by 49.6%, and SCF treatment increased by 61.1% compared to CCF treatment. Compared to CK treatment, total cumulative CH 4 uptake was 36.1% lower in CRF treatment, 60.9% in SCF and 78.9% in CCF treatment. The higher cumulative N 2 O emissions from CRF and SCF treatment resulted in a significantly higher global warming potential (GWP) than CCF treatment. The two-year mean increase in greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) was 36.2% for CRF treatment and 44.7% for SCF treatment compared to CCF treatment. Long-term application of coated controlled-release fertilizers could achieve high yields and nitrogen use efficiency. However, there is a risk of increased N 2 O emissions, causing elevated GHGI. In the future, it is necessary to strengthen the research on the comprehensive effects of long-term reduced application of CRU on crop yield and greenhouse gas emissions, in order to promote the wide application of environmentally friendly CRU in the field. Crop production alters nitrogen balance in double cropping of winter wheat-summer maize in grain nitrogen content, soil nitrogen pool and nitrogen loss, ultimately affecting nitrogen use efficiency and environmental health. In comparison to the information on crop responses only limited knowledge exists on the response of nitrogen balance to integrated agronomic practices management (IAPM, defined as a comprehensive management framework consisted of tillage method, plant density, seeding and harvest dates, and fertilizer application) under field. Planting pattern will affect crop production and environmental costs. And how the nitrogen balance change under IAPM? In order to answer this question, four treatments (T1, T2, T3 and T4) were conducted on double cropping of winter wheat-summer maize for 4 years in North China Plain. Annual grain yield of T2, T3, and T4 was 22.0%, 51.2%, and 33.3%, respectively, higher than T1. And single grain yield of winter wheat or summer maize had the same trend as the annual grain yield. Dry matter accumulation of T2, T3, and T4 in summer maize season were 8.3%, 42.0%, and 23.0%, and those in winter wheat season were 3.9%, 25.7%, and 12.1%, respectively, higher than T1 at harvest. The grain yield of T4 was lower than that of T3 but higher than that of T1 and T2, and net profit and nitrogen use efficiency of T4 were higher than that of T3. Meanwhile the highest current and residual nitrogen recovery efficiency ( C RE N and RE RE N ) were obtained by T4 treatment during the study period. The soil nitrogen content in 0–90 depth (SN), grain nitrogen content (GN), nitrogen apparent recovery efficiency (ARE N ) and fertilizer nitrogen loss (FNL) were measured for nitrogen balance. T4 treatment promoted nitrogen balance as higher GN, higher ARE N and lower FNL. The GN kept stable and FNL was increasing slowly in all treatments, which mean the contribution to soil nitrogen pool was decreasing with experimental years. The grain yield for T4 treatment of winter wheat, summer maize and annual increased by 36.4%, 31.3% and 33.3% averagely in the past 4 years, compared with T1 treatment. While maintaining crop production, T4 treatment made an important contribution to promoting nitrogen use efficiency, improving the situation of nitrogen balance, and reducing nitrogen loss about 39.1–54.4%, compared with other treatments. The application of nitrogenous fertilizer synergist to coordinate nitrogen transformation process in soil may be an efficient strategy to increase nitrogen use efficiency and decrease environmental pollution. However, there are few reports on the application effects of UAN synergistic nitrification and urease inhibitors under the integration of water and fertilizer. This study aimed to explore effects of urea ammonium nitrate solution (UAN) combined with urease and nitrification inhibitors on yield and nitrogen efficiency of summer maize and its ecological effects under the fertigation, and to provide scientific basis for the efficient utilization of UAN. The experimental treatments were as follows: no inhibitor treatment (U), nitrification inhibitor treatment (U-D), urease inhibitor treatment (U-N), and the combination of nitrification and urease inhibitors treatment (U-D+N). Results showed that UAN combined with urease or nitrification inhibitors could significantly reduce the cumulative emission of N 2 O, and then significantly decreased the N 2 O warming potential (GWP N2O) and N 2 O greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI N2O). Compared with U treatment, the cumulative N 2 O emissions of U-D+N, U-N, and U-D treatments was reduced by 45.7 %, 25.3 % and 35.8 %, respectively. The GWP N2O of U-D+N, U-N and U-D treatments decreased by 45.7 %, 25.3 % and 35.7 %, while GHGI N2O decreased by 50.9 %, 30.3 % and 38.9 % on average, respectively, compared to those of U treatment. Application of urease inhibitors significantly reduced NH 3 volatilization. The cumulative NH 3 volatilization of U-N and U-D+N treatments was reduced by 30.7 % and 23.4 %, while U-D treament was significantly increased by 12.3 %, respectively, compared to that of the U treatment. In addition, UAN combined with urease or nitrification inhibitor could significantly increase the contents of NO 3 --N and NH 4 --N in the 0–20 cm soil layer, and significantly reduced the leaching of NO 3 --N to the deep soil. The total nitrogen accumulation, grain nitrogen content, nitrogen transport efficiency and post-anthesis assimilation of summer maize were significantly increased, which were beneficial to the improvement of grain yield and economic benefits. under the fertigation, the synergistic application of UAN with urease and nitrification inhibitors were beneficial to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ammonia volatilization, improved the nitrogen use efficiency, and then improved the yield and economic benefits of summer maize. A study was conducted in the lysimeters and rain-out shelter facility at Shandong Agricultural University to investigate the impact of nitrogen (N) fertilization management practices and irrigation on the losses of N and N use efficiencies of winter wheat in the Huang Huai Hai Plains of northern China. 4 factors, each with two levels, including wheat varieties (SM15 and JM19), irrigation level (well water and deficit water), N fertilizer type (manure fertilizer and urea), N fertilizer rates (90 and 180 kg N ha −1 ) were applied in duplicate over three wheat growing seasons from 2009 to 2012. Ammonia volatilization rates (AVR) were highest immediately following fertilizer application and declined over 20 days after fertilization, AVR following urea is significantly greater than following manure application and is largely affected by soil NH 4 + -N concentrations. Cumulative ammonia volatilization (CAV) from urea was approximately three times that from manure. AV accounts for most of N losses and may account for 25% or more of applied N. Leaching losses increased with N fertilization concentration. Pre-winter leaching losses accounted for 69.6–100% of total leaching loss. Total N losses through AV and leaching during the whole wheat growing season were estimated to range from 30 to 60% of applied N. Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and N uptake efficiency (NUpE) of the cultivar SM15 is 10.1 and 19.8% greater than JM19 by average under well watered conditions, respectively, but NUE and N utilization efficiency (NUtE) of JM19 were 17.5% and 21.8% higher than SM15 under water stress condition, respectively. In addition, the difference of crop N use efficiency (NUE c ) and crop N uptake efficiency (NUpE c ) between two varieties was inconsistent to NUE and NUpE. The following results were implicated from this study: (1) ammonia volatilization could be reduced by 66.6% through manure application instead of urea application; (2) reducing fertilizer and irrigation supply during pre-winter stage could be a effective method to reduce N loss in the region; (3) all treatments in this study lead to progressively lower soil fertility except for the 180 kg N ha −1 manure which is able to maintain soil fertility; (4) wheat variety, N fertilizer level, irrigation amount and their interactions have obviously impact on NUE parameters. The experiment is to explore the efficient and comprehensive utilization of maize straw resources to achieve the sustainability of the soil fertility under double cropping of winter wheat and summer maize. Summer maize hybrid Denghai 605 (DH605) and winter wheat variety Tainong 18 (TN18) were used as experimental materials. Based on all winter wheat straw returned to the field, the treatment of all summer maize straw (SR) and half of summer maize straw (1/2SR) and summer maize straw not returned to the field (CK) 3 experimental treatments were tested for 8 consecutive years. Under the condition of normal nitrogen application of 210 kg ha−1, two split areas were set to reduce the amount of nitrogen fertilizer by 15% and 30% (SR-15%、SR-30%、1/2SR-15%、1/2SR-30%、CK-15%、CK-30%) at the beginning of the 2016 wheat season. In the first two years of reduced nitrogen application, the yields of SR and 1/2SR treatments were significantly higher than that of CK under the same nitrogen application conditions, while the yields of SR, 1/2SR, SR-15%, and 1/2SR-15% were not significantly different. In the third year of the process of reducing nitrogen fertilizer, compared with SR, 1/2SR, and SR-15% treatments, the yield of 1/2SR-15% were significantly reduced by 9% under winter wheat season. During winter wheat and summer maize season, the nitrogen use efficiency, and nitrogen absorption efficiency of SR and 1/2SR were significantly increased compared with CK treatment under the same nitrogen rate, of which SR-15% treatment was not significantly different from SR and 1/2SR. The pre-anthesis nitrogen transfer rate and nitrogen harvest index of summer maize treated with SR, 1/2SR, SR-15% and 1/2SR-15% were also significantly increased, compared with CK and CK-15% treatments. The win-win situation of ecological and crop yield can be achieved by return half of the straw to the field or reducing the nitrogen fertilizer application by 15% under the condition of straw returned to the field. • Returning the full amount of summer corn to the field can stably replace 15% of the nitrogen fertilizer application. • The yield stability and NUE of SR-15% treatment are not significantly different between with SR and 1/2 SR treatments. • The 1/2SR treatment can achieve a synergistic increase in crop yield and nitrogen utilization under NCP in China. Abstract: Excessive nitrogen (N) fertilizer application, outdated fertilization techniques, and non-optimal planting patterns are current cultivation problems with summer maize (Zea mays L.) among smallholders in North China. To try to solve those problems, this study examined four integrated agronomic management treatments-MT (FP: traditional farming practices; OPT-1: an optimized combination of cropping systems and fertilizer treatment; HY: treatment based on high-yield studies; and OPT-2: further optimized combination of cropping systems and fertilizer treatment) and four N application rate treatments-NT (0, 129.0, 184.5, and 300.0kgha−1). Maize grain yield and N efficiency were determined under each treatment. Grain yield, yield components, individual/population dry matter weight, N partial factor productivity (PFPN), N use efficiency (NUE), and agronomic efficiency of N (AEN) were measured. Results from the NT revealed no significant increase in grain yield in response to N applied above 184.5kgha−1 and increased yield was achieved by the MT. In MT, the change in sowing method from relay intercropping to direct seeding was effective in avoiding maize rough dwarf virus and in encouraging mechanized production; individual and population dry matter accumulation from the tasseling stage (VT) to physiological maturity stage (R6) increased in response to delayed sowing date and harvesting time; grain yield increased significantly from more ears per hectare due to increased planting density; and high N efficiency was achieved after optimizing fertilization patterns. In this study, OPT-2 obtained 67.0%, 104.0%, and 53.5% higher grain yield, PFPN, and NUE, respectively, compared to FP, achieving high yield and high N efficiency. Furthermore, the low AEN value suggests that further reduction in the N application rate of OPT-2 may be possible. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
