Reactive nitrogen (Nr) within smoke plumes plays important roles in the production of ozone, the formation of secondary aerosols, and deposition of fixed N to ecosystems. The Western Wildfire Experiment for Cloud Chemistry, Aerosol Absorption, and Nitrogen (WE‐CAN) field campaign sampled smoke from 23 wildfires throughout the western U.S. during summer 2018 using the NSF/NCAR C‐130 research aircraft. We empirically estimate Nr normalized excess mixing ratios and emission factors from fires sampled within 80 min of estimated emission and explore variability in the dominant forms of Nr between these fires. We find that reduced N compounds comprise a majority (39%–80%; median = 66%) of total measured reactive nitrogen (ΣNr) emissions. The smoke plumes sampled during WE‐CAN feature rapid chemical transformations after emission. As a result, within minutes after emission total measured oxidized nitrogen (ΣNOy) and measured total ΣNHx (NH3 + pNH4) are more robustly correlated with modified combustion efficiency (MCE) than NOx and NH3 by themselves. The ratio of ΣNHx/ΣNOy displays a negative relationship with MCE, consistent with previous studies. A positive relationship with total measured ΣNr suggests that both burn conditions and fuel N content/volatilization differences contribute to the observed variability in the distribution of reduced and oxidized Nr. Additionally, we compare our in situ field estimates of Nr EFs to previous lab and field studies. For similar fuel types, we find ΣNHx EFs are of the same magnitude or larger than lab‐based NH3 EF estimates, and ΣNOy EFs are smaller than lab NOx EFs. Plain Language Summary: Smoke from large wildfires in the western U.S. degrades air quality across the whole U.S. Smoke contains a mixture of many different gases and particles, including carbon compounds like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as nitrogen compounds such as ammonia and nitrogen oxides. Gases containing nitrogen are important for the production of ozone and the formation of more or larger particles as the smoke moves downwind. During the summer of 2018, we used the National Science Foundation/National Center for Atmospheric Research C130 research aircraft to fly through smoke across the western U.S. and measure many of the most abundant nitrogen compounds. We find that the smoke plumes we sampled emitted more nitrogen in a reduced form than in an oxidized form, and chemical reactions change the form and phase of nitrogen very quickly in the smoke. We compare our field measurements with laboratory measurements with the goal of using them together to improve our forecasts of how and where wildfire smoke will impact air quality. The absence of up-to-date emissions has been a major impediment to accurately simulating aspects of atmospheric chemistry and to precisely quantifying the impact of changes in emissions on air pollution. Hence, a nonlinear joint analytical inversion (Gauss–Newton method) of both volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions is made by exploiting the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Nadir Mapper (OMPS-NM) formaldehyde (HCHO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) columns during the Korea–United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign over East Asia in May–June 2016. Effects of the chemical feedback of NOx and VOCs on both NO2 and HCHO are implicitly included by iteratively optimizing the inversion. Emission uncertainties are greatly narrowed (averaging kernels >0.8 , which is the mathematical presentation of the partition of information gained from the satellite observations with respect to the prior knowledge) over medium- to high-emitting areas such as cities and dense vegetation. The prior amount of total NOx emissions is mainly dictated by values reported in the MIX-Asia 2010 inventory. After the inversion we conclude that there is a decline in emissions (before, after, change) for China (87.94±44.09 Gg d -1 , 68.00±15.94 Gg d -1 , -23 %), North China Plain (NCP) (27.96±13.49 Gg d -1 , 19.05±2.50 Gg d -1 , -32 %), Pearl River Delta (PRD) (4.23±1.78 Gg d -1 , 2.70±0.32 Gg d -1 , -36 %), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) (9.84±4.68 Gg d -1 , 5.77±0.51 Gg d -1 , -41 %), Taiwan (1.26±0.57 Gg d -1 , 0.97±0.33 Gg d -1 , -23 %), and Malaysia (2.89±2.77 Gg d -1 , 2.25±1.34 Gg d -1 , -22 %), all of which have effectively implemented various stringent regulations. In contrast, South Korea (2.71±1.34 Gg d -1 , 2.95±0.58 Gg d -1 , + 9 %) and Japan (3.53±1.71 Gg d -1 , 3.96±1.04 Gg d -1 , +12 %) are experiencing an increase in NOx emissions, potentially due to an increased number of diesel vehicles and new thermal power plants. We revisit the well-documented positive bias (by a factor of 2 to 3) of MEGAN v2.1 (Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature) in terms of biogenic VOC emissions in the tropics. The inversion, however, suggests a larger growth of VOCs (mainly anthropogenic) over NCP (25 %) than previously reported (6 %) relative to 2010. The spatial variation in both the magnitude and sign of NOx and VOC emissions results in nonlinear responses of ozone production and loss. Due to a simultaneous decrease and increase in NOx/VOC over NCP and YRD, we observe a ∼53 % reduction in the ratio of the chemical loss of NOx (LNOx) to the chemical loss of ROx (RO2+HO2) over the surface transitioning toward NOx -sensitive regimes, which in turn reduces and increases the afternoon chemical loss and production of ozone through NO2+OH (-0.42 ppbv h -1) /HO2 (and RO2) +NO (+0.31 ppbv h -1). Conversely, a combined decrease in NOx and VOC emissions in Taiwan, Malaysia, and southern China suppresses the formation of ozone. Simulations using the updated emissions indicate increases in maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) surface ozone over China (0.62 ppbv), NCP (4.56 ppbv), and YRD (5.25 ppbv), suggesting that emission control strategies on VOCs should be prioritized to curb ozone production rates in these regions. Taiwan, Malaysia, and PRD stand out as regions undergoing lower MDA8 ozone levels resulting from the NOx reductions occurring predominantly in NOx -sensitive regimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organic nitrates (RONO2) are an important NOx sink. In warm, rural environments dominated by biogenic emissions, nocturnal NO3‐initiated production of RONO2 is competitive with daytime OH‐initiated RONO2 production. However, in urban areas, OH‐initiated production of RONO2 has been assumed dominant and NO3‐initiated production considered negligible. We show evidence for nighttime RONO2 production similar in magnitude to daytime production during three aircraft campaigns in chemically distinct summertime environments: Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds, and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) in the rural Southeastern United States, Front Range Air Pollution and Photochemistry Experiment (FRAPPÉ) in the Colorado Front Range, and Korea‐United States Air Quality Study (KORUS‐AQ) around the megacity of Seoul. During each campaign, morning observations show RONO2 enhancements at constant, near‐background Ox (≡ O3+NO2) concentrations, indicating that the RONO2 are from a non‐photochemical source, whereas afternoon observations show a strong correlation between RONO2 and Ox resulting from photochemical production. We show that there are sufficient precursors for nighttime RONO2 formation during all three campaigns. This evidence impacts our understanding of nighttime NOx chemistry. One way in which nitrogen oxides are removed from the atmosphere is via chemistry that converts them to organic nitrates. This conversion of nitrogen oxides to organic nitrates has been thought to occur primarily during the day when the chemistry is driven by sunlight. Sulfate (SO42-) and nitrate (NO3-) account for half of the fine particulate matter mass over the eastern United States. Their wintertime concentrations have changed little in the past decade despite considerable precursor emissions reductions. The reasons for this have remained unclear because detailed observations to constrain the wintertime gas-particle chemical system have been lacking. We use extensive airborne observations over the eastern United States from the 2015 Wintertime Investigation of Transport, Emissions, and Reactivity (WINTER) campaign; ground-based observations; and the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model to determine the controls on winter SO42- and NO3-. GEOS-Chem reproduces observed SO42--NO3--NH4+ particulate concentrations (2.45 µg sm-3) and composition (SO42-: 47%; NO3-: 32%; NH4+: 21%) during WINTER. Only 18% of SO2 emissions were regionally oxidized to SO42- during WINTER, limited by low [H2O2] and [OH]. Relatively acidic fine particulates (pH~1.3) allow 45% of nitrate to partition to the particle phase. Using GEOS-Chem, we examine the impact of the 58% decrease in winter SO2 emissions from 2007 to 2015 and find that the H2O2 limitation on SO2 oxidation weakened, which increased the fraction of SO2 emissions oxidizing to SO42-. Simultaneously, NOx emissions decreased by 35%, but the modeled NO3- particle fraction increased as fine particle acidity decreased. These feedbacks resulted in a 40% decrease of modeled [SO42-] and no change in [NO3-], as observed. Wintertime [SO42-] and [NO3-] are expected to change slowly between 2015 and 2023, unless SO2 and NOx emissions decrease faster in the future than in the recent past. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study quantifies the immediate influences of aerosols from urban anthropogenic and shipping emission sources on carbon and water fluxes in East Asia on a cloudy day in spring 2016 when strong regional pollution transport occurred and intensive field campaign measurements are available. Within National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s Land Information System (LIS), a long‐term offline Noah‐multiparameterization (MP) simulation with dynamic vegetation is performed. Modeled soil moisture and leaf area index are evaluated with satellite observations to ensure that land surface conditions are moderately well reproduced. The LIS output is then used to initialize several coupled NASA‐Unified Weather Research and Forecasting model simulations with online chemistry in which urban anthropogenic and shipping emissions are (1) largely based on the Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution Phase 2 inventory for 2010, (2) reduced by 20% and 50% for all chemical species, and (3) adjusted only for nitrogen oxides (NOx) using satellite observations. Overall, modeled gross primary productivity and evapotranspiration almost linearly increase with the all‐species emission reductions, but their responses to emission‐induced aerosol optical depth (AOD) changes show strong spatial variability resulting from combined radiation and temperature impacts. Using satellite‐observation‐constrained NOx emissions, modeled nitrogen species and AOD better match various measurements at some locations/times. All‐species and NOx‐only emission adjustments lead to different gross primary productivity and evapotranspiration changes with AOD, especially over South Korea. This study demonstrates the importance of accurately quantifying emission impacts on atmosphere‐biosphere interactions. Improving more species' emission inputs for Earth system models, including applying effective chemical data assimilation methods, is strongly encouraged. To investigate the variability of in situ profile shapes under a variety of meteorological and pollution conditions, results are presented of an agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis of the in situ O 3 and NO 2 profiles for each of the four campaigns of the NASA DISCOVER-AQ mission. Understanding the observed profile variability for these trace gases is useful for understanding the accuracy of the assumed profile shapes used in satellite retrieval algorithms as well as for understanding the correlation between satellite column observations and surface concentrations. The four campaigns of the DISCOVER-AQ mission took place in Maryland during July 2011, the San Joaquin Valley of California during January–February 2013, the Houston, Texas, metropolitan region during September 2013, and the Denver-Front Range region of Colorado during July–August 2014. Several distinct profile clusters emerged for the California, Texas, and Colorado campaigns for O 3 , indicating significant variability of O 3 profile shapes, while the Maryland campaign presented only one distinct O 3 cluster. In contrast, very few distinct profile clusters emerged for NO 2 during any campaign for this particular clustering technique, indicating the NO 2 profile behavior was relatively uniform throughout each campaign. However, changes in NO 2 profile shape were evident as the boundary layer evolved through the day, but they were apparently not significant enough to yield more clusters. The degree of vertical mixing (as indicated by temperature lapse rate) associated with each cluster exerted an important influence on the shapes of the median cluster profiles for O 3 , as well as impacted the correlations between the associated column and surface data for each cluster for O 3 . The correlation analyses suggest satellites may have the best chance to relate to surface O 3 under the conditions encountered during the Maryland campaign Clusters 1 and 2, which include deep, convective boundary layers and few interruptions to this connection from complex meteorology, chemical environments, or orography. The regional CMAQ model captured the shape factors for O 3 , and moderately well captured the NO 2 shape factors, for the conditions associated with the Maryland campaign, suggesting that a regional air quality model may adequately specify a priori profile shapes for remote sensing retrievals.
