The purpose of this application, under Articles 78.1, 80.2. and 81.1 of the Code, is to conserve the in-use spellings leucorynchus Linnaeus, 1771 and mascarinus Linnaeus, 1771 as respective justified emendations of the specific names for the woodswallow, Artamus leucorynchus (Linnaeus, 1771), type species of the avian genus Artamus (Artamidae), and the parrot, Mascarinus mascarinus (Linnaeus, 1771), type species of the avian genus Mascarinus (Psittacidae). In an Appendix for animal species in his Mantissa Plantarum Altera (1771), Linnaeus originally published these names as 'mascarin.' and 'leucoryn.' in the binomina Lanius leucoryn. and Psittacus mascarin., with punctuation marks. Because of punctuation, they have been treated as abbreviated and spelled out almost universally since the late 18th century. Their spelling-out is now being challenged by reinterpretation and reintroduction of mascarin and leucoryn as unabbreviated. Evidence from the formatting and punctuation of species names in the Mantissa Plantarum Altera is presented to show that leucoryn. and mascarin. are, in fact, abbreviated; and the ruling of Official Correction 82 of the Commission in an associated case is cited in support. In the interests of nomenclatural stability, and to accord with the ruling of Official Correction 82, it is proposed that leucoryn. Linnaeus, 1771 and mascarin. Linnaeus, 1771 be determined as incorrect original spellings, and that all spelling-outs of leucoryn. and mascarin. other than leucorynchus and mascarinus respectively be ruled as unjustified emendations. An appended table lists all 20 punctuated animal names in the Mantissa Plantarum Altera, recording those that are abbreviated and those that are not, and identifying the nominal species to which they apply today. The purpose of this application under Articles 78.1 and 81.1 of the Code is to suppress for nomenclatural purposes the two-volume work 'The White-cheeked geese: Branta canadensis, B. maxima, B. 'lawrensis', B. hutchinsii, B. leucopareia, and B. minima. Taxonomy, ecophysiographic relationships, biogeography, and evolutionary considerations,' by Harold C. Hanson. Reasons for suppression are the work's many confounded new taxon designations, inappropriately chosen types, inadequately diagnosed new taxa, variable and confused authorships, and a flawed neotype designation. Together they serve as evidence of general nomenclatural dysfunction. If not suppressed, Hanson' s work will become a source of destabilisation the nomenclature of the Branta canadensis complex. Gray, 1855 for a genus of South American parrotlets by suppression of the earlier but little-utilized, taxonomically equivocal name Pyrrhulopsis Reichenbach, 1850. It discusses how it can confirm the validity of the genus-group name Prosopeia Bonaparte, 1854 for the Fijian shining parrots.

Suppression of the junior homonym Psittacula Kuhl, 1820, upon which psittaculinae Vigors was originally based, will maintain stability in nomenclature. Suppression of the simultaneously published family-group name palaeornithinae Vigors, 1825, which was originally applied to the Indo-Australasian long-tailed parrots, is desirable as well. Gould in 1841, long used for the southeastern and respective southwestern species of Australian long-billed corellas, genus Cacatua introduced by Vieillot in 1817. The article presents the case for the proposed conservation of the generic names Anthochaera and Philesturnus. These names refer to the Australian wattlebirds and the New Zealand saddleback. The proposal aims to suppress the generic name Creadion because it may be applied to the Australian wattlebirds, long known as Anthochaera, and becomes a source of confusion and threat to stability. The genus Creadion was used to describe Australasian passerine birds with wattled bills and included in it the species Sturnus carunculatus, Merops carunculatus, and Corvus paradoxus.

The generic name Aplonis has been used for the various species of the west Pacific glossy starlings, since John Gould described the genus in 1836. The spelling controversies surrounding Aplornis and Aplonis are explored. The application proposes the suppression of the Aplornis spelling and rather use the Aplonis spelling.
