Abstract

This article reviews Shen Songqiao's "Pingjie Shen zhu Xueheng Pai yu Wu-Si Shiqi de Fanxin Wenhua Yundong: Jianlun Shehui Kexue yu Shixue Yanjiu Fangfa" (The Critical Review Group and a Reaction to the New Culture Movement during the May Fourth Movement: With a Discussion of Research Methods in Historiography and the Social Sciences), which focuses on a conservative intellectual movement centered around a periodical called "Xueheng" (Critical Review), published from 1922 to 1933. The group represented an alternative political approach to the progressive New Culture Movement that emerged after World War I and that advocated rapid modernization for the national salvation of China. Shen's work, according to the reviewer, recalls the spirit of a doomed movement that saw Chinese tradition as the answer to China's challenge from the West. [ABSTRACT FROM CONTRIBUTOR]
