The structural safety of the infrastructure stock is an important issue in modern seismic performance assessments. Following recent seismic events, reports have highlighted the increased vulnerability of physical infrastructural assets, particularly for many bridges across the Italian road and motorway network. Italy possesses one of the most complex and intricate road systems in Europe which was constructed across irregular territories in terms of plan and elevation and of varying dimensions. As such, a comparative case study is presented herein. This case study aims to characterise the seismic vulnerability of the Vizzana-Zampogna viaduct which is part of the A15 Parma-La Spezia motorway, near the locality of Selva Bocchetto. The viaduct is considered representative of the 1970s construction period. It is approximately 342 m in length and is characterized by a flat curvilinear prestressed concrete deck consisting of 15 spans simply supported on reinforced concrete piers. To better understand the seismic structural response of the individual piers of the viaduct, a "multi-modal" nonlinear static analysis was developed, which allows the effects of sectional stresses relative to the variable load profiles of the single modes to be combined through the quadratic modal combination, and to be compared with the relevant limit state. The research aims to qualitatively identify the piers most vulnerable to seismic action and to study the effects that are induced by introducing variable loads and intensity scenarios of different earthquakes. Italian reinforced concrete precast industrial buildings featuring frictional beam-to-column connections suffered from severe losses following recent earthquakes. Despite the relevance of this topic, the current literature includes only few works investigating the seismic behaviour of these buildings, the influence of vertical records on their modelled dynamic response, as well as the sensitivity of their seismic fragility to the friction type implemented in-situ. The above considerations imparted momentum to this research. First, a sensitivity analysis was conducted considering both concrete-to-concrete and neoprene-to-concrete friction types, as well as the presence or absence of vertical records in the vulnerability analyses. Within a multiple-stripe analysis framework, a number of nonlinear dynamic analyses were carried out on two precast building models created in OpenSees and assumed to be located in three Italian cities subjected to different hazard levels. Fragility curves related to the limit states of Serviceability Preventing Damage and Life Safety were derived. Then, epistemic uncertainty in the friction type and the influence of vertical records on the fragility curve was treated by employing a logic tree framework, allowing for the derivation of weighted average fragility curves, one per city. While the latter are structure-specific and site-dependent, they may be considered as generic or typological fragility curves, for use by researchers or practitioners who are interested in carrying out a fragility analysis on a reinforced concrete precast industrial building but are not confident on the friction type implemented in-situ and the influence of vertical records for the site and structure at hand. The following paper presents the design and verification steps of tall steel frame structures with braced core, belt and outrigger trusses. The two case study structures refer to sky scrapers of 180m and 300m respectively, located in Istanbul, Turkey. The main objectives of this study are two: firstly designing the buildings through multilevel structural analysis, secondly to compare the results, in terms of seismic response, between response spectrum analysis (RSA) and nonlinear time history analysis (NLTHA). Such comparison has been made with the intention of investigating the relationship between the structure height and the accuracy of RSA predictions, considering that the latter approach tends to underestimate the influence of higher mode effects. In conclusion the capacity curves of the two structures, developed using incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis, are presented as an ulterior way to assess the seismic capacity of such type of high-rise structural systems. Shaking-table experiments of relatively large-scale specimens play a fundamental role in deepening our understanding of seismic response of existing structures and verification of numerical models. However, and in apparent contradiction, the preparation of such a dynamic laboratory experiment requires a-priori advanced numerical simulations, necessary to both fine-tune the test specimen properties and calibrate the input motion, as a function of the objectives of the test and capabilities and characteristics of the shaking table. This research thus concerns the development of a fibre-based finite elements model of a halfscale 3D reinforced concrete frame tested under dynamic conditions at the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE, Pavia, Italy). Since this reduced-scale specimen is very much based on a full-scale counterpart previously tested under pseudo-dynamic conditions at the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC, Ispra, Italy), the first part of the work consisted in verifying that the software tool employed in the numerical simulations was capable of duplicating the pseudo-dynamic real test results. Having successfully met the latter objective, the second part of the work consisted in the attempted numerical simulation of the shaking table tests, with a view to ascertain that the response of the model will be within the envisaged response targets and that the necessary input motion is compatible with the shaking-table characteristics. Liquid storage tanks are widely used in the industry and can contain not only harmless substances but also various ones that can be explosive and toxic or pollutant, thus implying that both the structure and the content must remain safe and operational under different types of loading. The same applies to any tank-connected plant system/item. Yet, past earthquakes repeatedly demonstrated that even if structural damage is prevented in the shell, severe occurrences may still be observed due to sloshing phenomena, which drive the tank-fluid system response with high impacts in case of accidental release of chemicals. Therefore, this paper studies an energy dissipation system consisting of floating roof and external dampers that are utilized to control liquid vibration by augmenting the level of damping. In order to evaluate its effectiveness at the design-level earthquakes, a series of explicit nonlinear dynamic analyses have been performed, and comparisons are provided between floating roofed steel cylindrical tanks equipped with supplemental devices and counterparts without them. Changes in seismic performance because of geometrical variations in the tank (i.e. aspect ratio) and seismic input (i.e. far and near field earthquakes) have been quantified by means of experimentally validated numerical models that account for material and geometrical nonlinearities, as well as for fluid-structure interaction in an explicit manner. Shake-table tests available in the literature have been simulated, and the proposed modelling criteria show a good fit with experimental data on two tank specimens. Analysis data sets involving three tank geometries reveal that even if the dissipation system targets mainly large-capacity tanks, it can be effectively used to enhance the performance of any system, reducing the sloshing wave height which can be excessive especially when the tank is subjected to severe near field ground motions. • Dynamic response of liquid storage tanks with floating roof is examined numerically. • Tanks with floating roof are analysed with and without dampers used to control liquid vibration. • Experimentally validated numerical models are developed to simulate different tank geometries. • Nonlinear sloshing of the fluid is reproduced by the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation. • Sloshing wave height peaks can be effectively reduced, thus mitigating damage and related issues.
