Abstract: A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

3. An expansion of well tempered gravity

Abstract: Abstract: When faced with two nigh intractable problems in cosmology — how to remove the original cosmological constant problem and how to parametrize modified gravity to explain current cosmic acceleration — we can make progress by counterposing them. The well tempered solution to the cosmological constant through degenerate scalar field dynamics also relates disparate Horndeski gravity terms, making them contrapuntal. We derive the connection between the kinetic term K and braiding term G3 for shift symmetric theories (including the running Planck mass G4), extending previous work on monomial or binomial dependence to polynomials of arbitrary finite degree. We also exhibit an example for an infinite series expansion. This contrapuntal condition greatly reduces the number of parameters needed to test modified gravity against cosmological observations, for these "golden" theories of gravity.

Abstract: We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

Abstract: Using pp collisions corresponding to 3 fb −1 integrated luminosity, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, the ratio of branching fractionsℬ(Λb0→ψ(2S)Λ)/ℬ(Λb0→J/ψΛ)=0.513±0.023(stat)±0.016(syst)±0.011(ℬ)is determined. Abstract: A search is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 195 GeV/c2 decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV , collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb-1 . The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c2 to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c2 .

Abstract: The production rate and kinematics of photons produced in association with Z bosons are studied using 2fb-1 of pp̄ collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross section for pp̄→"+-γ+X (where the leptons " are either muons or electrons with dilepton mass M>40GeV/c2, and where the photon has transverse energy ETγ>7GeV and is well separated from the leptons) is 4.6±0.2(stat)±0.3(syst)±0.3(lum)pb, which is consistent with standard model expectations. We use the photon ET distribution from Zγ events where the Z has decayed to μ+μ -, e+e-, or νν̄ to set limits on anomalous (non standard model) trilinear couplings between photons and Z bosons. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Amplitude models are constructed to describe the resonance structure of D0→K-π+π+π- and D0→K+π-π-π+ decays using pp collision data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1 . The largest contributions to both decay amplitudes are found to come from axial resonances, with decay modes D0→a1(1260)+K- and D0→K1(1270/1400)+π- being prominent in D0→K-π+π+π- and D0→K+π-π-π+ , respectively. Precise measurements of the lineshape parameters and couplings of the a1(1260)+ , K1(1270)- and K(1460)- resonances are made, and a quasi model-independent study of the K(1460)- resonance is performed. The coherence factor of the decays is calculated from the amplitude models to be RK3π=0.459±0.010(stat)±0.012(syst)±0.020(model) , which is consistent with direct measurements. These models will be useful in future measurements of the unitary-triangle angle γ and studies of charm mixing and CP violation.

Abstract: A search for the lepton-flavour violating decays Bs0 → e±μ∓ and B0 → e±μ∓ is performed based on a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1, collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The observed yields are consistent with the background-only hypothesis. Abstract: The ratios of the branching fractions of the decays Λc+ → pπ−π+, Λc+ → pK−K+, and Λc+ → pπ−K+ with respect to the Cabibbo-favoured Λc+ → pK−π+ decay are measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at a 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1:ℬ(Λc+→p+)ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+)=(7.44±0.08±0.18)%,ℬ(Λc+→pK−K+)ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+)=(1.70±0.03±0.03)%ℬ(Λc+→pπ−K+)ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+)=(0.165±0.015±0.005)%,where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results are the most precise measurements of these quantities to date. When multiplied by the world-average value for ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+), the corresponding branching fractions areℬ(Λc+→p+)=(4.72±0.05±0.11±0.25)×10−3,ℬ(Λc+→pK−K+)=(1.08±0.02±0.02±0.06)×10−3,ℬ(Λc+→pπ−K+)=(1.04±0.09±0.03±0.05)×10−4,where the final uncertainty is due to ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+).[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Abstract: A flavour-tagged decay-time-dependent amplitude analysis of Bs0 → (K+π−)(K−π+) decays is presented in the K±π∓ mass range from 750 to 1600MeV/c2. The analysis uses pp collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1. Several quasi-two-body decay modes are considered, corresponding to K±π∓ combinations with spin 0, 1 and 2, which are dominated by the K0*(800)0 and K0*(1430)0, the K*(892)0 and the K2*(1430)0 resonances, respectively. The longitudinal polarisation fraction for the Bs0→K∗(892)°K¯∗(892)0 decay is measured as fL = 0.208 ± 0.032 ± 0.046, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The first measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase, ϕsdd¯, in b→ dd¯ s transitions is performed, yielding a value of ϕsdd¯=−0.10±0.13(stat)±0.14 (syst) rad.

Abstract: The difference between the CP asymmetries in the decays Λc+ → pK−K+ and Λc+ → pπ−π+ is presented. Proton-proton collision data taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV collected by the LHCb detector in 2011 and 2012 are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1. The Λc+ candidates are reconstructed as part of the Λb0 → Λc+μ−X decay chain. In order to maximize the cancellation of production and detection asymmetries in the difference, the final-state kinematic distributions of the two samples are aligned by applying phase-space-dependent weights to the Λc+ → pπ−π+ sample. This alters the definition of the integrated CP asymmetry to ACPwgt(pπ−π+). Both samples are corrected for reconstruction and selection efficiencies across the five-dimensional Λc+ decay phase space. The difference in CP asymmetries is found to be ΔACPwgt=ACP(pK−K+)−ACPwgt(pπ−π+)=(0.30±0.91±0.61)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Abstract: We report the measurements of the CP -violating parameters in Bs0 → Ds∓K± decays observed in pp collisions, using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 recorded with the LHCb detector. We measure Cf = 0.73 ± 0.14 ± 0.05, AfΔΓ = 0.39 ± 0.28 ± 0.15, Af=0.31±0.28±0.15, Sf = −0.52 ± 0.20 ± 0.07, Sf¯= − 0.49 ± 0.20 ± 0.07 , where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These parameters are used together with the world-average value of the Bs0 mixing phase, −2βs, to obtain a measurement of the CKM angle γ from Bs0 → Ds∓K± decays, yielding γ = (128− 22+ 17)° modulo 180°, where the uncertainty contains both statistical and systematic contributions. This corresponds to 3.8 σ evidence for CP violation in the interference between decay and decay after mixing.

Abstract: A flavour-tagged decay-time-dependent amplitude analysis of Bs0 → (K+π−)(K−π+) decays is presented in the K±π∓ mass range from 750 to 1600MeV/c2. The analysis uses pp collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1. Several quasi-two-body decay modes are considered, corresponding to K±π∓ combinations with spin 0, 1 and 2, which are dominated by the K0*(800)0 and K0*(1430)0, the K*(892)0 and the K2*(1430)0 resonances, respectively. The longitudinal polarisation fraction for the Bs0→K∗(892)°K¯∗(892)0 decay is measured as fL = 0.208 ± 0.032 ± 0.046, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The first measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase, ϕsdd¯, in b→ dd¯ s transitions is performed, yielding a value of ϕsdd¯=−0.10±0.13(stat)±0.14 (syst) rad.

Abstract: The ratios of the branching fractions of the decays Λc+ → pπ−π+, Λc+ → pK−K+, and Λc+ → pπ−K+ with respect to the Cabibbo-favoured Λc+ → pK−π+ decay are measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at a 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1:ℬ(Λc+→p+)ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+)=(7.44±0.08±0.18)%,ℬ(Λc+→pK−K+)ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+)=(1.70±0.03±0.03)%ℬ(Λc+→pπ−K+)ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+)=(0.165±0.015±0.005)%,where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results are the most precise measurements of these quantities to date. When multiplied by the world-average value for ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+), the corresponding branching fractions areℬ(Λc+→p+)=(4.72±0.05±0.11±0.25)×10−3,ℬ(Λc+→pK−K+)=(1.08±0.02±0.02±0.06)×10−3,ℬ(Λc+→pπ−K+)=(1.04±0.09±0.03±0.05)×10−4,where the final uncertainty is due to ℬ(Λc+→pK−π+).[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Abstract: The difference between the CP asymmetries in the decays Λc+ → pK−K+ and Λc+ → pπ−π+ is presented. Proton-proton collision data taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV collected by the LHCb detector in 2011 and 2012 are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1. The Λc+ candidates are reconstructed as part of the Λb0 → Λc+μ−X decay chain. In order to maximize the cancellation of production and detection asymmetries in the difference, the final-state kinematic distributions of the two samples are aligned by applying phase-space-dependent weights to the Λc+ → pπ−π+ sample. This alters the definition of the integrated CP asymmetry to ACPwgt(pπ−π+). Both samples are corrected for reconstruction and selection efficiencies across the five-dimensional Λc+ decay phase space. The difference in CP asymmetries is found to be ΔACPwgt=ACP(pK−K+)−ACPwgt(pπ−π+)=(0.30±0.91±0.61)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Abstract: We report the measurements of the CP -violating parameters in Bs0 → Ds∓K± decays observed in pp collisions, using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 recorded with the LHCb detector. We measure Cf = 0.73 ± 0.14 ± 0.05, AfΔΓ = 0.39 ± 0.28 ± 0.15, Af=0.31±0.28±0.15, Sf = −0.52 ± 0.20 ± 0.07, Sf¯= − 0.49 ± 0.20 ± 0.07 , where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These parameters are used together with the world-average value of the Bs0 mixing phase, −2βs, to obtain a measurement of the CKM angle γ from Bs0 → Ds∓K± decays, yielding γ = (128− 22+ 17)° modulo 180°, where the uncertainty contains both statistical and systematic contributions. This corresponds to 3.8 σ evidence for CP violation in the interference between decay and decay after mixing.

Abstract: A search is performed in the invariant mass spectrum of the Bc+π+π− system for the excited Bc+ states Bc(21S0)+ and Bc(23S1)+ using a data sample of pp collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at the centre-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb−1. No evidence is seen for either state. Upper limits on the ratios of the production cross-sections of the Bc(21S0)+ and Bc(23S1)+ states times the branching fractions of Bc(21S0)+ → Bc+π+π− and Bc(23S1)+ → Bc*+π+π− over the production cross-section of the Bc+ state are given as a function of their masses. They are found to be between 0.02 and 0.14 at 95% confidence level for Bc(21S0)+ and Bc(23S1)+ in the mass ranges [6830, 6890] MeV/c2 and [6795, 6890] MeV/c2, respectively.[Figure not available: see fulltext.].

Abstract: Amplitude models are constructed to describe the resonance structure of D 0 → K - π + π + π - and D 0 → K + π - π - π + decays using pp collision data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 f b - 1 . The largest contributions to both decay amplitudes are found to come from axial resonances, with decay modes D 0 → a 1 ( 1260 ) + K - and D 0 → K 1 ( 1270 / 1400 ) + π - being prominent in D 0 → K - π + π + π - and D 0 → K + π - π - π + , respectively. Precise measurements of the lineshape parameters and couplings of the a 1 ( 1260 ) + , K 1 ( 1270 ) - and K ( 1460 ) - resonances are made, and a quasi model-independent study of the K ( 1460 ) - resonance is performed. The coherence factor of the decays is calculated from the amplitude models to be R K 3 π = 0.459 ± 0.010 ( stat ) ± 0.012 ( syst ) ± 0.020 ( model ) , which is consistent with direct measurements. These models will be useful in future measurements of the unitary-triangle angle γ and studies of charm mixing and C P violation.

Abstract: A search is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 195 GeV/c2 decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV , collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb-1 . The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c2 to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c2 .

Abstract: A search is presented for long-lived particles with a mass between 25 and 50 GeV / c 2 and a lifetime between 2 and 500 ps, using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb - 1 , collected by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The particles are assumed to be pair-produced in the decay of a 125 GeV / c 2 Standard-Model-like Higgs boson. The experimental signature is a single long-lived particle, identified by a displaced vertex with two associated jets. No excess above background is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section as a function of the mass and lifetime of the long-lived particle.

Abstract: The production of J/ψ mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=8.16 TeV with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The double differential cross-sections of prompt and nonprompt J/ψ production are measured as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum and rapidity in the nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass frame. Forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors are determined. The results are compared with theoretical calculations based on collinear factorisation using nuclear parton distribution functions, on the colour glass condensate or on coherent energy loss models.

Abstract: The B0, Bs0, B+ and Λb0 hadron production asymmetries are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1, collected by the LHCb experiment in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity of the b hadrons within the LHCb detector acceptance. The overall production asymmetries, integrated over transverse momentum and rapidity, are also determined.

Abstract: The production of J/ψ mesons is studied in proton-lead collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=8.16 TeV with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The double differential cross-sections of prompt and nonprompt J/ψ production are measured as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum and rapidity in the nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass frame. Forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors are determined. The results are compared with theoretical calculations based on collinear factorisation using nuclear parton distribution functions, on the colour glass condensate or on coherent energy loss models.

The branching fractions are measured relative to that of the B0 → KS0π+π− decay, and are determined to be: (Formula Presented.) at 90% confidencelevel, where fs/fd represents the ratio of hadronisation fractions of the Bs0 and B0 mesons.

Abstract: A measurement is presented of decay-time-dependent CP violation in the decays B0 → J/ψ KS0 and B0 → ψ(2S)KS0, where the J/ψ is reconstructed from two electrons and the ψ(2S) from two muons. The analysis uses a sample of pp collision data recorded with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1. The CP -violation observables are measured to beC(B0→J/ψKS0)=0.12±0.07±0.02,S(B0→J/ψKS0)=0.83±0.08±0.01,C(B0→ψ(2S)KS0)=−0.05±0.10±0.01,S(B0→ψ(2S)KS0)=0.84±0.10±0.01,where C describes CP violation in the direct decay, and S describes CP violation in the interference between the amplitudes for the direct decay and for the decay after B0− B¯ 0 oscillation. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The two sets of results are compatible with the previous LHCb measurement using B0 → J/ψ KS0 decays, where the J/ψ meson was reconstructed from two muons. The averages of all three sets of LHCb results areC(B0→[cc¯]KS0)=−0.017±0.029,S(B0→[cc¯]KS0)=0.760±0.034,under the assumption that higher-order contributions to the decay amplitudes are negligible. Abstract: Measurements of CP observables in B± → DK*± decays are presented, where D denotes a superposition of D0 and D¯ 0 meson states. Decays of the D meson to K−π+, K−K+, π−π+, K−π+π−π+ and π−π+π−π+ are used and the K*± meson is reconstructed in the KS0π± final state. This analysis uses a data sample of pp collisions collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1 fb−1, 2 fb−1 and 1.8 fb−1 at centre-of-mass energies s=7 TeV, 8 TeV and 13 TeV, respectively. The sensitivity of the results to the CKM angle γ is discussed.

Abstract: Measurements of CP observables in B± → DK*± decays are presented, where D denotes a superposition of D0 and D¯ 0 meson states. Decays of the D meson to K−π+, K−K+, π−π+, K−π+π−π+ and π−π+π−π+ are used and the K*± meson is reconstructed in the KS0π± final state. This analysis uses a data sample of pp collisions collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1 fb−1, 2 fb−1 and 1.8 fb−1 at centre-of-mass energies s=7 TeV, 8 TeV and 13 TeV, respectively. The sensitivity of the results to the CKM angle γ is discussed.

The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.58±0.02 nb−1 recorded at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=5 TeV. Measurements of the differential cross-section, the forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor are reported using D0 candidates with transverse momenta less than 10 GeV/c and rapidities in the ranges 1.5 < y∗< 4.0 and −5.0 < y∗< −2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system.

Abstract: A search for the decay K S 0 → μ + μ - is performed, based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb - 1 , collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV . The observed yield is consistent with the background-only hypothesis, yielding a limit on the branching fraction of B ( K S 0 → μ + μ - ) < 0.8 ( 1.0 ) × 10 - 9 at 90 % ( 95 % ) confidence level. This result improves the previous upper limit on the branching fraction by an order of magnitude.

Abstract: Using decays to ϕ -meson pairs, the inclusive production of charmonium states in b -hadron decays is studied with pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb - 1 , collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Denoting by B C ≡ B ( b → C X ) × B ( C → ϕ ϕ ) the inclusive branching fraction of a b hadron to a charmonium state C that decays into a pair of ϕ mesons, ratios R C 2 C 1 ≡ B C 1 / B C 2 are determined as R η c ( 1 S ) χ c 0 = 0.147 ± 0.023 ± 0.011 , R η c ( 1 S ) χ c 1 = 0.073 ± 0.016 ± 0.006 , R η c ( 1 S ) χ c 2 = 0.081 ± 0.013 ± 0.005 , R χ c 0 χ c 1 = 0.50 ± 0.11 ± 0.01 , R χ c 0 χ c 2 = 0.56 ± 0.10 ± 0.01 and R η c ( 1 S ) η c ( 2 S ) = 0.040 ± 0.011 ± 0.004 . Here and below the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Upper limits at 90% confidence level for the inclusive production of X(3872), X(3915) and χ c 2 ( 2 P ) states are obtained as R χ c 1 X ( 3872 ) < 0.34 , R χ c 0 X ( 3915 ) < 0.12 and R χ c 2 χ c 2 ( 2 P ) < 0.16 . Differential cross-sections as a function of transverse momentum are measured for the η c ( 1 S ) and χ c states. The branching fraction of the decay B s 0 → ϕ ϕ ϕ is measured for the first time, B ( B s 0 → ϕ ϕ ϕ ) = ( 2.15 ± 0.54 ± 0.28 ± 0 . 21 B ) × 10 - 6 . Here the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the decay B s 0 → ϕ ϕ , which is used for normalization. No evidence for intermediate resonances is seen. A preferentially transverse ϕ polarization is observed. The measurements allow the determination of the ratio of the branching fractions for the η c ( 1 S ) decays to ϕ ϕ and p p ¯ as B ( η c ( 1 S ) → ϕ ϕ ) / B ( η c ( 1 S ) → p p ¯ ) = 1.79 ± 0.14 ± 0.32 .

Abstract: A search for CP violation in D±→η′π± and Ds±→η′π± decays is performed using proton–proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The measured CP-violating charge asymmetries are ACP(D±→η′π±)=(−0.61±0.72±0.53±0.12)% and ACP(Ds±→η′π±)=(−0.82±0.36±0.22±0.27)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic, and the third are the uncertainties on the ACP(D±→KS0π±) and ACP(Ds±→ϕπ±) measurements used for calibration. The results represent the most precise measurements of these asymmetries to date.

Abstract: The decays of Bs0and B¯s0 mesons into the J/ψK+K−final state are studied in the K+K−mass region above the ϕ(1020) meson in order to determine the resonant substructure and measure the CP-violating phase, ϕs, the decay width, Γs, and the width difference between light and heavy mass eigenstates, ΔΓs. A decay-time dependent amplitude analysis is employed. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1produced in 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions at the LHC, collected by the LHCb experiment. The measurement determines ϕs= 119 ± 107 ± 34 mrad. A combination with previous LHCb measurements using similar decays into the J/ψπ+π−and J/ψϕ(1020) final states gives ϕs= 1 ± 37 mrad, consistent with the Standard Model prediction.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]
