The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. This chapter reviews multichannel broadband measurement of the soft-X-ray radiation and total radiation in magnetically confined fusion plasma experiments. Common detector types used (including bolometers), details of their application, and interpretation of their measurements are described. An introduction is given to the application of computed tomography methods in the mathematical reconstruction of emission profiles from multiple (approximately) line-integral measurements, taking into account the specific circumstances common in magnetically confined fusion plasma experiments. Although the emphasis is on two-dimensional tomography of poloidal cross sections, the applications of Abel inversion, three-dimensional tomography, vector tomography, and other specific methods are briefly discussed. Several examples of the application and the plasma parameters that can be derived are given.

Alfven cascade (AC) eigenmodes excited by energetic ions accelerated with ion-cyclotron resonance heating in JET reversed-shear discharges are studied experimentally in high-density plasmas fuelled by neutral beam injection (NBI) and by deuterium pellets. The recently developed O-mode interferometry technique and Mirnov coils are employed for detecting ACs. The spontaneous improvements in plasma confinement (internal transport barrier (ITB) triggering events) and grand ACs are found to correlate within 0.2 s in JET plasmas with densities up to ∼5 × 10^19 m−3. Measurements with high time resolution show that ITB triggering events happen before ‘grand’ ACs in the majority of JET discharges, indicating that this improvement in confinement is likely to be associated with the decrease in the density of rational magnetic surfaces just before qmin(t) passes an integer value. Experimentally observed ACs excited by sub-Alfvenic NBI-produced ions with parallel velocities as low as V_||NBI ≈ 0.2 · V_A are found to be most likely associated with the geodesic acoustic effect that significantly modifies the shear-Alfven dispersion relation at low frequency. Experiments were performed with a tritium NBI-blip (short time pulse) into JET plasmas with NBI-driven ACs. Although considerable NBI-driven AC activity was present, good agreement was found both in the radial profile and in the time evolution of DT neutrons between the neutron measurements and the TRANSP code modelling based on the Coulomb collision model, indicating the ACs have at most a small effect on fast particle confinement in this case.

A multi-channel reflectometer diagnostic probing the mid-plane plasma in the O-mode polarization is routinely used for detection of Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) on the JET tokamak. The AEs are observed on the spectrogram of the homodyne signal reflected by the inner wall when the probing frequency is higher than the maximum of the plasma frequency (interferometry regime). In particular the time and frequency resolution of the Alfven cascades (ACs) is better from this technique than from any other diagnostic. We show here that knowing the shape of the density fluctuations induced by an AC, the level of these density fluctuations can also be inferred from the phase fluctuations of the reflectometry signal.

Extensive analysis of disruptions in JET has helped advance the understanding of trends of disruption-generated runaway electrons. Tomographic reconstruction of the soft x-ray emission has made possible a detailed observation of the magnetic flux geometry evolution during disruptions. With the aid of soft and hard x-ray diagnostics runaway electrons have been detected at the very beginning of disruptions. A study of runaway electron parameters has shown that an approximate upper bound for the conversion efficiency of pre-disruptive plasma currents into runaways is about 60% over a wide range of plasma currents in JET. Runaway generation has been simulated with a test particle model in order to verify the results of experimental data analysis and to obtain the background for extrapolation of the existing results onto larger devices such as ITER. It was found that close agreement between the modelling results and experimental data could be achieved if in the calculations the post-disruption plasma electron temperature was assumed equal to 10 eV and if the plasma column geometry evolution is taken into account in calculations. The experimental trends and numerical simulations show that runaway electrons are a critical issue for ITER and, therefore, the development of mitigation methods, which suppress runaway generation, is an essential task.

The development of scenarios characterized by H-mode confinement and internal transport barriers (ITBs) in high triangularity, δ ~ 0.4–0.5, discharges is of particular interest for ITER advanced tokamak operation. Previous JET experiments have shown that high triangularity favours H-modes which are ELM-free or develop type I edge localized mode (ELM) activity, which inhibits long lasting ITBs. The recent experiments reported here concentrate on integrated optimization of edge and core conditions. The stability of the edge pedestal was controlled using gas injection, deuterium or light impurities, and plasma current ramps. Both methods yield more ITB-friendly edge pedestal conditions, varying from small type I to type III ELMs and, in extreme cases, resulting in L-mode. In parallel, the conditions for triggering and sustaining ITBs encompassing a large proportion of the plasma volume (outer ITBs) were optimized, as opposed to less performing ITBs located closer to the plasma centre (inner ITB). These plasmas have deeply reversed target current profiles with qmin ~ 3 and a narrow inner ITB, located typically at a small normalized radius ρ < 0.5 and close to the reversed shear region, is routinely observed. Large radius outer ITBs are only triggered at an input power in excess of 20 MW, but they do not usually survive the transition into H-mode. The best results, in terms of sustained high confinement, have been obtained with neon injection; an outer ITB is triggered during the phase with L-mode edge and survives into H-mode for about 2 s, corresponding to ~10 times the global energy confinement time τE, at q95 = 7.5, H89βN ~ 3.5–4 and ~60% of the Greenwald density limit. In summary, a high triangularity scenario has been developed, which combines the desirable characteristics of controlled edge, long lasting wide ITBs and high performance at density higher than the low triangularity JET scenarios.

In preparation for next step burning plasma devices such as ITER, experimental studies of instabilities and confinement of energetic ions were performed on Joint European Torus (JET) and on Mega-Amper Spherical Tokamak (MAST) with innovative diagnostic techniques, in conventional and shear-reversed plasmas, exploring a wide range of effects for energetic ions. A compendium of recent results testing capabilities of the present-day facilities for burning plasma relevant study is presented in this paper. 'Alpha tail' production using 3rd harmonic ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) of He-4 beam ions has been employed on JET for studying He-4 of the megaelectronvolt energy range in a 'neutron-free' environment. The evolution of ICRH-accelerated ions of He-4 with E >= 1.7 MeV and D with E >= 500 keV was assessed from nuclear gamma-ray emission born by the fast ions colliding with Be and C impurities. A simultaneous measurement of spatial profiles of fast He-4 and fast D ions relevant to ITER was performed for the first time in positive and strongly reversed magnetic shear discharges. Time-resolved gamma-ray diagnostics for ICRH-accelerated He-3 and H minority ions allowed changes in the fast ion distribution function to be assessed in the presence of unstable toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) and sawteeth. A significant decrease of gamma-ray intensity from protons with E >= 5 MeV was detected during the 'tornado' modes. This was interpreted as 'tomado'-induced loss of fast ions with the drift orbit width, Delta(f), comparable to the minor radius of tokamak a. Experiments performed in the opposite case, Delta f/a = 500 keV, have shown excitation of numerous Alfven eigenmodes without a significant degradation of the fast ion confinement. The stabilizing effect of fast particles on 'monster' sawteeth was experimentally found to fail in low-density plasmas with high power ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF)-heating. The transition from the 'monster' to short-period 'grassy' sawteeth was investigated with different ICRF phasing, which controls the pinch-effect and radial distribution of ICRF-accelerated ions. Instabilities excited by super-Alfvenic beam ions were investigated on the spherical tokamak MAST. Due to higher values of beta and a higher proportion of fast ions on MAST than on JET, a wider variety of modes and nonlinear regimes for the Alfven instabilities were observed, including the explosive TAE-regimes leading to the formation of hole-clump pairs on the fast ion distribution function. The MAST and START data showed that TAE and chirping modes decrease both in their mode amplitudes and in the number of unstable modes with increasing beta.

Gamma-ray images of fast D- and 4He-ions accelerated with third-harmonic ion-cyclotron-resonance heating of 4He-beam were simultaneously recorded for the first time in JET tokamak experiments dedicated to the investigation of burning plasmas with 3.5 MeV fusion alpha (α) particles. Gamma (γ) rays, born as a result of nuclear reactions, 9Be(4He, nγ)12C and 12C(D, pγ)13C, between the fast ions and the main plasma impurities, are measured using a two-dimensional multicollimator spectrometer array, which distinguishes the γ-rays from accelerated D- and 4He-ions. Tomographic reconstruction of the γ-ray emission profiles gives images of the fast-ion population in the poloidal cross-section. The potential of this technique to visualize several energetic ion species and to determine their behaviour in different plasma scenarios is demonstrated.

Ion cyclotron resonance frequencies (ICRF) mode conversion has been developed for localized on-axis and off-axis bulk electron heating on the JET tokamak. The fast magnetosonic waves launched from the low-field side ICRF antennas are mode-converted to short-wavelength waves on the high-field side of the He-3 ion cyclotron resonance layer in D and He-4 plasmas and subsequently damped on the bulk electrons. The resulting electron power deposition, measured using ICRF power modulation, is narrow with a typical full-width at half-maximum of approximate to30 cm (i.e. about 30% of the minor radius) and the total deposited power to electrons comprises at least up to 80% of the applied ICRF power. The ICRF mode conversion power deposition has been kept constant using He-3 bleed throughout the ICRF phase with a typical duration of 4-6 s, i.e. 15-40 energy confinement times. Using waves propagating in the counter-current direction minimizes competing ion damping in the presence of co-injected deuterium beam ions.

An investigation of pellet pacing and triggering of Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) was carried out in the frame of ELM mitigation studies aimed at reducing their damaging effects on the plasma-facing components (PFCs). The divertor power load footprint of triggered ELMs was compared with gas puffing controlled ELMs. Small pellets, corresponding to a few per cent of the target plasma particle inventory, were used to minimize the fueling effect and the total particle throughput. There is no evidence that pellets can reduce the divertor power load with respect to gas fueling when operating at the same ELM frequency. The line average density and the energy confinement time remained constant when the gas was progressively substituted by pellets. The launch from the Vertical High Field Side (VHFS) confirmed to be more efficient in ELM triggering than from the Low Field Side (LFS) while the power load footprint remained the same both in time evolution and in spatial distribution when changing the injection geometry. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Équipe 107 : Physique des plasmas chauds; International audience; Disruptions are a major operational concern for next generation tokamaks, including ITER. They may generate excessive heat loads on plasma facing components, large electromagnetic forces in the machine structures and several MA of multi-MeV runaway electrons. A more complete understanding of the runaway generation processes and methods to suppress them is necessary to ensure safe and reliable operation of future tokamaks. Runaway electrons were studied at JET-ILW showing that their generation dependencies (accelerating electric field, avalanche critical field, toroidal field, MHD fluctuations) are in agreement with current theories. In addition, vertical stability plays a key role in long runaway beam formation. Energies up to 20 MeV are observed. Mitigation of an incoming runaway electron beam triggered by massive argon injection was found to be feasible provided that the injection takes place early enough in the disruption process. However, suppressing an already accelerated runaway electron beam in the MA range was found to be difficult even with injections of more than 2 kPa.m(3) high-Z gases such as krypton or xenon. This may be due to the presence of a cold background plasma weakly coupled to the runaway electron beam which prevents neutrals from penetrating in the electron beam core. Following unsuccessful mitigation attempts, runaway electron impacts on beryllium plasma-facing components were observed, showing localized melting with toroidal asymmetries.

Experiments have established the regions of parameter space in JET that lead to runaway generation in disruptions. Previous measurements on the structure of the runaway beam have been confirmed. The delay in runaway generation following temperature collapse is found to be caused by the very high density generated by the disruption. It is shown that runaway generation in JET can be best modelled and understood by including avalanche processes.

Pellet injection was investigated for its fuelling capability to high densities in ELMy H mode discharges at JET. Applying the high field side launch system, optimized refuelling scenarios were developed on the basis of conventional discharge configurations withIp= 2.5 MA,Bt= 2.4 T, averaged triangularity ⟨δ⟩≈0.34 and mainly neutral beam heating at a level of approximately 17 MW. The accessible operational range was extended with respect to gas puff refuelling by the use of pellet injection. For example, H mode conditions could be maintained at densities beyond the Greenwald level. Plasma energy confinement was observed to become density independent at high densities. Deep pellet particle deposition made possible the uncoupling of edge and core density, allowing more peaked density profiles. When confinement deterioration due to pellet triggered MHD activity or parasitic pellet borne gas was avoided in appropriate pulse schedules, an enhanced particle inventory was achieved while maintaining the plasma pressure profile. In a technical assessment it was found that there is still room for further enhancement of the injection scenario by improved adaptation to high density plasma operation.

The former all-carbon wall on JET has been replaced with beryllium in the main torus and tungsten in the divertor to mimic the surface materials envisaged for ITER. Comparisons are presented between Type I H-mode characteristics in each design by examining respective scans over deuterium fuelling and impurity seeding, required to ameliorate exhaust loads both in JET at full capability and in ITER., 55 pages, 15 figures

High power ICRF heating of a hydrogen minority ion species in JET tritium plasmas has generated a total neutron rate that is about 40% larger than the 14 MeV neutron rate originating from fusion reactions between bulk tritium ions and deuterium minority ions. The T(p,n)3He fusion reaction, caused by ICRF accelerated protons, is identified as a source for producing the excess neutron emission. This reaction is endothermic and has a proton energy threshold of about 1 MeV and a peak cross-section at about 3.0 MeV. The presence of protons with such high energies is detected in gamma ray and high energy neutral particle analyser measurements and is also confirmed by ICRF modelling with the PION code. The fast proton energy content and the pT fusion reactivity as simulated by the PION code are compared with the experimental measurements when classical slowing down and confinement of ICRF accelerated protons are assumed in the simulations.

Results achieved on JET during the 1997-1999 experimental campaigns in the physics of energetic ions and runaway electrons are reviewed. Heating of deuterium-tritium (DT) plasmas by fusion born alpha particles is found to be similar to that achieved by comparable ICRF heating of deuterium plasmas. The stability of alpha particle driven Alfv?n eigenmodes (AEs) in the highest fusion power ELM-free H mode discharges is shown to be consistent with the existing theoretical analysis for AEs. Direct measurements of the trapped alpha particle and knock-on deuteron distribution functions by a neutral particle analyser (NPA) are described. New ICRF heating scenarios tested in JET DT plasmas are presented in view of the possible use of the ICRF heating of ITER-like DT plasmas on route to ignition. The energetic ion pinch in the presence of toroidally asymmetric ICRF waves is studied experimentally on JET. Recent experimentally observed effects of ICRF accelerated ions on sawteeth in JET are reviewed. Detailed time and space resolved X ray images of the electron runaway beam in flight spontaneously generated by disruptions on JET are described.

Fast particle driven instabilities are investigated at low toroidal field B-0 approximate to 1 T in tritium, deuterium and hydrogen plasmas. Tritium, deuterium and hydrogen neutral beams with energies of 160, 140 and 110 keV were injected, respectively, into tritium, deuterium and hydrogen plasmas. The destabilization of Alfven eigenmodes was observed during injection of tritium beams into a tritium plasma and during the injection of deuterium beams into a deuterium plasma but not during the injection of hydrogen beams into a hydrogen plasma. At high beta, beta(N) = beta/(I-p/B(T)a) > 2.5, high amplitude fishbones were observed and appeared to be correlated with the degradation of confinement.

Runaways generated during disruptions in tokamaks may have damaging consequences in large machines because of the high power generated by their localized deposition on the vessel walls. In an investigation of the runaways generated in disruptions in JET, detailed time and space resolved X ray images of the runaway beam in flight have been obtained for the first time and these allow a detailed diagnosis and analysis of the production and movement of the runaways. These measurements are now possible because of the development, for the JET DT campaign, of radiation protected soft X ray cameras. The measurements show that the runaways are generated at the vessel centre in a region with small minor radius and they then move to interact with a small area of the wall. The observed radiation power both in detectors installed in the torus and in the radiation protected cameras shows reasonable agreement with values calculated from the runaway current and energy. The current density profile and q profile of the runaway beam are also determined. After the start of the disruption there is a delay before the onset of runaway generation and this may offer control possibilities.

The main limitation to the performance of JET optimized shear (OS) discharges is due to MHD instabilities, mostly in the form of a disruptive limit. The structure of the MHD mode observed as a precursor to the disruption, as measured from SXR and ECE diagnostics, shows a global ideal MHD mode. The measured mode structure is in good agreement with the calculated mode structure of the pressure driven kink mode. The disruptions occur at relatively low normalized beta (1 < βN < 2), in good agreement with calculated ideal MHD stability limits for the n = 1 pressure driven kink mode. These low limits are mainly due to the extreme peaking factor of the pressure profiles. Other MHD instabilities observed in JET OS discharges include, usually benign, chirping modes. These modes, which occur in bursts during which the frequency changes, have the same mode structure as the disruption precursor but are driven unstable by fast particles.

Discharge optimization for improving MHD stability of both core and edge was essential for the achievement of record fusion power discharges, in the ELM-free hot ion H mode regime, in the recent JET DT operation. The techniques used to increase edge stability are described. In particular the successful technique of current rampdown used to suppress the outer mode is reported. The increased stability of the outer mode by decreasing the edge current density confirms its identification as an n = 1 external kink. Decreasing the plasma current, however, decreases the ELM-free period, which is consistent with stability calculations that show an earlier onset of the ballooning limit. In order to increase external kink stability without causing a deterioration in the ELM-free period, a compromise was achieved by using plasma current rampdown, while working at the highest plasma current values possible. Results from a plasma current scan show that at the time of occurrence of the first giant ELM, the plasma stored energy, as well as the pressure measured at the top of the edge pedestal increase linearly with plasma current, for a given plasma configuration and power. This is consistent with models of the edge transport barrier, where the transport barrier width is proportional to the ion (or fast ion) poloidal Larmor radius. The MHD observations in DT and deuterium only discharges were found to be similar. Thus the experience gained on the control of MHD modes in deuterium plasmas could be fully exploited in the DT campaign.

High fusion performance has been achieved in optimized shear discharges in JET with the early appearance of internal transport barriers (ITBs) in the high power phase in both DD and DT plasmas. An ITB has been produced in a large variety of conditions, including LHCD only, ICRH only, NBI only and NBI + ICRH with LHCD preheat. An ITB may coexist with the edge barrier. The high pressure gradient produced by ICRH combined with high power NBI heating starting in a low density plasma with q(0) ≈ 1.5-2 is the main prerequisite for an efficient ITB in high performance discharges. Strong coupling between q profiles, MHD activity, energy confinement and fusion yield has been observed. The transition from L to H mode can be triggered by MHD events. The transition is accompanied by significant momentary changes in the density fluctuation spectrum in the peripheral plasma. The ITB may persist for some time in both ELM-free and ELMy H mode.

The soft X ray diagnostic at JET views the plasma from six directions with a total of 215 lines of sight. The good coverage of the plasma makes it possible to make detailed tomographic reconstructions of the soft X ray emission during various conditions. One of the tomography methods applied at JET is discussed: a grid based constrained optimization method that uses anisotropic smoothness on flux surfaces as regularization. This method has made it possible to study in detail the transport of heavy trace impurities injected into the plasma by laser blow-off. Impurity injection experiments in hot ion H mode and optimized shear plasmas are presented and discussed. The addition of a number of features to the algorithm, notably a non-negativity constraint, has made it possible to reconstruct very localized soft X ray emission from the wall during edge localized modes (ELMs). The detectors suffer damage from the neutrons produced in deuterium-deuterium (DD) fusion reactions. This damage influences the sensitivity of the detectors, which makes it necessary to cross-calibrate the cameras. A method based on tomographic reconstructions has been developed to achieve the cross-calibration.

Giant edge localized modes (ELMs) play an important role in the transport of plasma at the edge of tokamaks with a divertor. The loss of plasma, by mechanisms that are not well understood, causes very high power loading on parts of the wall structure. The flows of particles and energy have been determined on a rapid time-scale for the first time in JET. The soft X ray measurements have a complex structure and show a rapid onset of the instability. They prove that some plasma is lost outside the divertor and that recycling occurs to well within the separatrix. The implications of the results for the ELM instability mechanism and the design of tokamaks are discussed.

The `outer mode' is one of the MHD modes that limits the fusion performance of the hot ion H mode discharges in JET. It has previously been proposed that the outer mode is a non-linearly saturated external kink mode. This was based on the localization of the perturbation close to the edge as observed in soft X ray (SXR), electron temperature and electron density measurements. In addition, MHD stability calculations showed that the plasma edge is close to the ideal external kink stability boundary at the time when the outer mode is observed. The SXR data of the outer mode are compared with predictions based on the mode structure of the ideal n = 1 external kink mode. Excellent agreement is found, confirming the identification of the outer mode as an external kink mode.

Type I ELMy H-mode operation in JET with the ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW) generally occurs at lower pedestal pressures compared to those with the full carbon wall (JET-C). The pedestal density is similar but the pedestal temperature where type I ELMs occur is reduced and below to the so-called critical type I-type III transition temperature reported in JET-C experiments. Furthermore, the confinement factor H 98( y ,2) in type I ELMy H-mode baseline plasmas is generally lower in JET-ILW compared to JET-C at low power fractions P loss / P thr,08 2, the confinement in JET-ILW hybrid plasmas is similar to that in JET-C. A reduction in pedestal pressure is the main reason for the reduced confinement in JET-ILW baseline ELMy H-mode plasmas where typically H 98( y ,2) = 0.8 is obtained, compared to H 98( y ,2) = 1.0 in JET-C. In JET-ILW hybrid plasmas a similarly reduced pedestal pressure is compensated by an increased peaking of the core pressure profile resulting in H 98( y ,2) ⩽ 1.25. The pedestal stability has significantly changed in high triangularity baseline plasmas where the confinement loss is also most apparent. Applying the same stability analysis for JET-C and JET-ILW, the measured pedestal in JET-ILW is stable with respect to the calculated peeling ballooning stability limit and the ELM collapse time has increased to 2 ms from typically 200 µ s in JET-C. This indicates that changes in the pedestal stability may have contributed to the reduced pedestal confinement in JET-ILW plasmas. A comparison of EPED1 pedestal pressure prediction with JET-ILW experimental data in over 500 JET-C and JET-ILW baseline and hybrid plasmas shows a good agreement with 0.8

In nearly all hot ion H modes in JET, a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) event is clearly observed just before the time the stored plasma energy saturates and the neutron yield starts to decline. The results of a systematic analysis of MHD observations for a large number of discharges is reported. The relationship between MHD phenomena and the onset of confinement limitation is discussed, as are aspects of the three main types of performance limiting MHD: (a) low-n modes in the outer regions of the plasma, (b) sawteeth and (c) giant edge localized modes (ELMs). Model simulations indicate how the transport is affected and allow an assessment of how much the neutron yield would be improved if the MHD activity were absent

The confinement in JET baseline type I ELMy H-mode plasmas is compared to that in so-called hybrid H-modes in a database study of 112 plasmas in JET with the carbon fibre composite (CFC) wall. The baseline plasmas typically have β N ∼ 1.5–2, H 98 ∼ 1, whereas the hybrid plasmas have β N ∼ 2.5–3, H 98 δ ∼ 0.2–0.25) and high-triangularity (δ ∼ 0.4) hybrid and baseline H-mode plasmas from the last JET operational campaigns in the CFC wall from the period 2008–2009. Based on a detailed confinement study of the global as well as the pedestal and core confinement, there is no evidence that the hybrid and baseline plasmas form separate confinement groups; it emerges that the transition between the two scenarios is of a gradual kind rather than demonstrating a bifurcation in the confinement. The elevated confinement enhancement factor H 98 in the hybrid plasmas may possibly be explained by the density dependence in the τ 98 scaling as n 0.41 and the fact that the hybrid plasmas operate at low plasma density compared to the baseline ELMy H-mode plasmas. A separate regression on the confinement data in this study shows a reduction in the density dependence as n 0.09±0.08. Furthermore, inclusion of the plasma toroidal rotation in the confinement regression provides a scaling with the toroidal Alfvén Mach number as and again a reduced density dependence as n 0.15±0.08. The differences in pedestal confinement can be explained on the basis of linear MHD stability through a coupling of the total and pedestal poloidal pressure and the pedestal performance can be improved through plasma shaping as well as high β operation. This has been confirmed in a comparison with the EPED1 predictive pedestal code which shows a good agreement between the predicted and measured pedestal pressure within 20–30% for a wide range of β N ∼ 1.5–3.5. The core profiles show a strong degree of pressure profile consistency. No beneficial effect of core density peaking on confinement could be identified for the majority of the plasmas presented here as the density peaking is compensated by a temperature de-peaking resulting in no or only a weak variation in the pressure peaking. The core confinement could only be optimized in case the ions and electrons are decoupled, in which case the ion temperature profile peaking can be enhanced, which benefits confinement. In this study, the latter has only been achieved in the low-triangularity hybrid plasmas, and can be attributed to low-density operation. Plasma rotation has been found to reduce core profile stiffness, and can explain an increase in profile peaking at small radius ρ tor = 0.3.

This paper investigates the effect of the ITER-like wall (ILW) on runaway electron (RE) generation through a comparative study of similar slow argon injection JET disruptions, performed with different wall materials. In the carbon wall case, a RE plateau is observed, while in the ITER-like wall case, the current quench is slower and the runaway current is negligibly small. The aim of the paper is to shed light on the reason for these differences by detailed numerical modelling to study which factors affected the RE formation. The post-disruption current profile is calculated by a one-dimensional model of electric field, temperature and runaway current taking into account the impurity injection. Scans of various impurity contents are performed and agreement with the experimental scenarios is obtained for reasonable argon and wall impurity contents. Our modelling shows that the reason for the changed RE dynamics is a complex, combined effect of the differences in plasma parameter profiles, the radiation characteristics of beryllium and carbon, and the difference of the injected argon amount. These together lead to a significantly higher Dreicer generation rate in the carbon wall case, which is less prone to being suppressed by RE loss mechanisms. The results indicate that the differences are greatly reduced above ∼50% argon content, suggesting that significant RE current is expected in future massive gas injection experiments on both JET and ITER. © 2013 IAEA, Vienna.

Remarkable progress has been made in diagnosing energetic particle instabilities on present-day machines and in establishing a theoretical framework for describing them. This overview describes the much improved diagnostics of Alfven instabilities and modelling tools developed world-wide, and discusses progress in interpreting the observed phenomena. A multi-machine comparison is presented giving information on the performance of both diagnostics and modelling tools for different plasma conditions outlining expectations for ITER based on our present knowledge., 37 pages, 20 figures

The MHD effects observed in the hot ion H modes in the pre-divertor configuration of JET, including those generated in the preliminary tritium experiment, are described. Some observations were found to be similar to those in high beta regimes while others are new and appear to be pertinent to high performance discharges only. The high performance phase is largely sawtooth free and dominated by fishbone activity, which increases in amplitude throughout this phase. During termination of the high performance phase, the growth of a large variety of MHD activity with low mode numbers is observed. Also, edge instabilities possibly associated with much larger mode numbers are seen in the Dalpha emission. In some cases, the unusual structure of two central m=n=1 islands was found, and resistive MHD modelling indicates that this observation is consistent with a nearly flat, non-monotonic q profile. In some discharges a sawtooth collapse immediately followed by an edge localized mode (ELM) is observed at, or shortly following, the termination of the high performance

Pellet enhanced performance (PEP) has been observed in a number of JET discharges at various plasma conditions, in both L and H modes, with the H multiplier (the confinement enhancement factor over the Goldston confinement time) covering the range from 1 to 4, and with plasma currents from 1 MA to 4.1 MA. Most of the PEP plasmas have been created by refuelling with pellets of 4 mm diameter injected at 1.2 km/s. PEPs show an improved central confinement with an effective heat conductivity reduced by factors of approximately 2-5 relative to otherwise comparable discharges. This is possibly related to the inverted shear in the plasma core due to the large local bootstrap current density. The limitations in the PEP performance seem to be set by at least two mechanisms: impurity behaviour, MHD activity or a combination of both. In certain discharges, MHD modes seem to be able to check the often observed impurity accumulation. Too much MHD mode activity, however, easily destroys the enhanced confinement of the PEP discharge. The stability of the ballooning modes has been studied and the PEP plasma core is found to be in the second stability region against ballooning modes or close to marginal stability. In a number of discharges complex high (m,n) modes have been observed with the soft X-ray cameras. The behaviour of the low (m,n) MHD modes can only be understood by considering the detailed evolution of the inverted q profile, which exists in a given discharge

Tomography is a technique which is widely applied to fusion plasmas as it can provide improved understanding of plasma emissivity distributions. It is challenging because of the sparse nature of data available from the measured plasma projections. An optimised version of robust and fast tomographic algorithm based on the Tikhonov regularisation constrained to Minimum Fisher Information is presented in this contribution. A new regularisation matrix enforcing preferential emissivity smoothness along magnetic flux surfaces is introduced. The paper also details application of advanced numerical methods which lead to a substantial decrease in computation time. Subsequent implementation of fast presolvers of the inverse problem further contributes to the algorithm's efficiency and also an improved stability of the tomography reconstruction. Finally, reliability and performance of the tomography algorithm is exemplified by the reconstruction of soft X-ray data evolution following tungsten ablation into a JET plasma. The resulting speed of reconstruction is compared to other referenced tomographic algorithms.

The non-resonant magnetic braking effect induced by a non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbation is investigated on JET and TEXTOR. The collisionality dependence of the torque induced by the n = 1, where n is the toroidal mode number, magnetic perturbation generated by the error field correction coils on JET is observed. The observed torque is located mainly in the plasma core (normalized radius ρ ν regime. The strongest NTV torque on JET is also located near the plasma core. The magnitude of the NTV torque strongly depends on the plasma response, which is also discussed in this paper. There is no obvious braking effect with n = 2 magnetic perturbation generated by the dynamic ergodic divertor on TEXTOR, which is consistent with the NTV modelling.

Large and infrequent collapse events have been observed in high βN advanced tokamak (AT) plasmas in JET. Although they have features similar to large ELMs, they were triggered by core MHD. They caused a considerable loss of the plasma thermal and fast particle energy (∼10% of the total stored energy), but the heat load in the divertor due to these collapse events was small as a fraction of the plasma energy loss compared with regular type-I ELMs. Instead, significant heating of the main chamber wall was observed. A large, toroidally asymmetric, increase in the neutral gas pressure outside the plasma was observed after such events, which caused arcs in the lower hybrid (LH) and ion cyclotron (IC) heating systems and increased reionization in the neutral beam (NB) injectors. The collapses resulted in a reduction in the electron and ion temperatures and toroidal rotation of the whole plasma, a rise in Z eff; and a sufficiently large increase in the peripheral electron density to completely black-out the ECE emission from the plasma core. These features have been modelled to gain an understanding of the plasma behaviour associated with these collapse events and the implication for the operation of AT plasma scenarios with high additional heating power will be discussed.

Experiments on JET with a carbon-fibre composite wall have explored the reduction of steady-state power load in an ELMy H-mode scenario at high Greenwald fraction 0.8, constant power and close to the L to H transition. This paper reports a systematic study of power load reduction due to the effect of fuelling in combination with seeding over a wide range of pedestal density ((48)×10 19m 3) with detailed documentation of divertor, pedestal and main plasma conditions, as well as a comparative study of two extrinsic impurity nitrogen and neon. It also reports the impact of steady-state power load reduction on the overall plasma behaviour, as well as possible control parameters to increase fuel purity. Conditions from attached to fully detached divertor were obtained during this study. These experiments provide reference plasmas for comparison with a future JET Be first wall and an all W divertor where the power load reduction is mandatory for operation.

Results are presented of transport studies conducted on trace impurities injected with the laser blow-off technique in a variety of JET L mode pulses. In the core of the discharge, the transport is much slower, the impurity diffusion coefficient D is more than an order of magnitude below the values it assumes further out, but still above the neoclassical predictions. The extent of the slow transport core region varies with the magnetic field and with the total plasma current and is broadly correlated with the edge value of the safety factor. Closer analysis reveals that the current profile is essential in determining the radial dependence of D. This parameter appears to undergo a rapid transition to highly anomalous levels in the vicinity of the radial position where the dimensionless shear parameter is equal to 0.5. Within that region D stays moderate even when the electron temperature gradient is high. A marked increase of D in the outer region of the discharge is observed when the power per particle is raised or, alternatively, when the temperature and its gradient grow in that region, but no clear dependence of D on plasma density is found when the electron temperature profile is kept constant. Transport modelling based on the critical Del Tc assumption leads to D profiles that are similar, although not in detailed quantitative agreement, to the experimental ones when the temperature profiles are flat in the centre; when the temperature profiles are peaked in the centre, even the radial dependence of the predicted diffusion profiles is very different from the one observed. Recent theoretical attempts to analyse the radial structure of the microturbulent fluctuations predict a strong positive dependence of anomalous diffusion on the magnetic shear as observed in our experiments

The scan of ion cyclotron resonant heating (ICRH) power has been used to systematically study the pump out effect of central electron heating on impurities such as Ni and Mo in H-mode low collisionality discharges in JET. The transport parameters of Ni and Mo have been measured by introducing a transient perturbation on their densities via the laser blow off technique. Without ICRH Ni and Mo density profiles are typically peaked. The application of ICRH induces on Ni and Mo in the plasma centre (at normalized poloidal flux ρ = 0.2) an outward drift approximately proportional to the amount of injected power. Above a threshold of ICRH power of about 3 MW in the specific case the radial flow of Ni and Mo changes from inwards to outwards and the impurity profiles, extrapolated to stationary conditions, become hollow. At mid-radius the impurity profiles become flat or only slightly hollow. In the plasma centre the variation of the convection-to-diffusivity ratio v/D of Ni is particularly well correlated with the change in the ion temperature gradient in qualitative agreement with the neoclassical theory. However, the experimental radial velocity is larger than the neoclassical one by up to one order of magnitude. Gyrokinetic simulations of the radial impurity fluxes induced by electrostatic turbulence do not foresee a flow reversal in the analysed discharges.

A new pellet injection system was installed at JET designed for both fuelling and ELM pacing. The purpose of the pacing section was to validate pellet ELM pacing as a suitable tool for ELM mitigation in ITER. Pellet pacing was confirmed at the large size scale of JET. The dynamics of triggered ELMs was investigated with respect to their spontaneous counterparts. Triggered ELMs show features also typical for spontaneous ELMs in several operational regimes. Since none of these regimes was unsettled by the pellets this is a strong hint for compatibility with other plasma control tools. Observations and modelling results indicate the ELM triggering occurs by the evolution of the pellet ablation plasmoid into the first ELM filament followed by a poloidal spread of the instability. An ELM obviously can be forced by a pellet due to the strong local perturbation imposed already under unusual onset conditions but then evolves like any ELM typical for the corresponding plasma regime. For tool optimization the pellet mass and hence the convective confinement losses imposed have to be minimized. In our experiments, a lower mass threshold was observed for the first time. It has been found that to reliably trigger an ELM the pellet needs to be sufficiently large (and fast) to penetrate close to the pedestal top. Recent investigations are clear steps forward to validate the pellet pacing approach for ITER.

High poloidal beta plasmas with a correspondingly high bootstrap fraction of 70+or-15% have been produced using ion cyclotron resonance heating, in an ELM free H mode confinement regime. This regime is terminated by a large edge instability, causing a reversion to L mode confinement. Possible causes for this instability are discussed and the overall implications of the results for steady state bootstrap dominated operation are examined

The limit to high performances advanced scenario discharges with qmin above unity is generally set by the (2,1) magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) mode in JET. We investigate here the possibility that this mode is a (2,1) neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) by computing the critical island width at which such mode would be unstable, using a non-linear MHD code where the relevant bootstrap current physics is accounted for. We show that the triggering of a (2,1) NTM is consistent with a lowering of the critical island width as the plasma current diffuses towards the centre. This is explained partly by the increase in the magnetic shear at the resonant surface, which weakens the curvature stabilization term, as found in the analytical framework of a generalized Rutherford equation. A comparison with experiment is made in the non-linear regime, showing encouraging results on the dynamics of the confinement degradation and mode structure.

Aiming at investigating edge localised mode (ELM) pacing for future application on ITER, experiments have been conducted on JET injecting pellets in different plasma configurations, including high confinement regimes with type-I and type-III ELMs, low confinement regimes and Ohmically heated plasmas. The magnetic perturbations spectra and the toroidal mode number, n, of triggered events are compared with those of spontaneous ELMs using a wavelet analysis to provide good time resolution of short-lived coherent modes. It is found that—in all these configurations—triggered events have a coherent mode structure, indicating that pellets can trigger an MHD event basically in every background plasma. Two components have been found in the magnetic perturbations induced by pellets, with distinct frequencies and toroidal mode numbers. In high confinement regimes triggered events have similarities with spontaneous ELMs: both are seen to start from low toroidal mode numbers, then the maximum measured n increases up to about 10 within 0.3 ms before the ELM burst.

Pedestal and scrape-off layer (SOL) dynamics due to edge localized modes (ELMs) have been studied on JET with improved diagnostic capability. The new high resolution Thomson scattering system enables detailed measurement of the space and time evolution of the T e and n e pedestal profiles. The pedestal and SOL dynamics for type I ELMy H-mode plasmas have been studied for a wide range of plasma conditions. During a short period of W ped) over a large range of pedestal collisionality from below to above whereas the conductive losses strongly decrease from ∼20% of W ped to 5% of W ped with increasing . The experimental observations are compared with a simple model based on losses being driven by parallel transport.

A detailed study of position changes of plasma strike points before and after edge localized modes (ELMs) in JET was carried out. A hypothesis being tested is that in an ELM previously closed edge field lines would open up, releasing plasma current and leading to the formation of a new, smaller separatrix. It was observed that after each ELM strike points have shifted a few centimetres towards the plasma centre ( up in JET). In some cases a transient (< 100 mu s), upwards large (> 10 cm) jump of strike positions was observed first. It was followed by an equally fast jump down to the shifted strike positions. Such behaviour has not been described in previous computational models of the ELM. Therefore two novel instability mechanisms are presented, which contribute to explain the changes in strike point position: an X-point instability, due to positive toroidal current density at the X-point, and a diamagnetic instability, due to negative inboard toroidal current density.

A direct method of determining the alpha-muon sticking coefficient omega 0 following muon-catalysed d-t fusion, by measuring the ratio of ( alpha mu )-neutron coincidences to neutron singles, is described. Initial measurements have used a low-pressure D-T gas target and the pulsed muon beam at the ISIS facility of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and give a preliminary result of omega 0=0.0069+or-0.0040+or-0.0014(sys).

The pellet pacing ELM control concept developed at the mid sized tokamak ASDEX Upgrade is considered for the larger machines JET and ITER as well. By driving up the ELM frequency, the ELM size can be reduced and eventually suppressed below a dangerous level. An according pellet injection systems for JET is under construction, the ITER design includes one as well. However, it has still to be proven the concept will work also at bigger machine sizes. A step forward in this mission was achieved by re-analysing previous JET experiments dedicated to pellet particle fuelling. Although the experiments were performed in a parameter regime unsuitable for pellet ELM pacing both with respect to pellet frequency and size they demonstrate prompt triggering of ELMs takes place at JET as well. Prompt triggering, an indispensable premise for useful pacing, obviously can be achieved already with a pellet size sufficiently small to avoid unbearable side- effects by particle fuelling. An ELM released by the local perturbation imposed by the ablating pellet in the plasma edge region is detected when only a minor fraction (less than 1%) of the fuelling size pellets (containing about 4 10 21 D) was ablated and deposited yet. It is thus very likely JET will allow for investigations on the operational technique and the underlying physics of pellet pacing once the new system becomes operational.

A new MHD mode has been discovered during type-I ELMy H-modes in the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak. This mode is excited by the perturbation of the edge plasma due to the edge localized mode (ELM). It is radially and poloidally well localized and has the toroidal mode number n = 1 and the poloidal mode number m = 3. The mode appears in different plasma configurations and in a wide range of global plasma parameters as long as the rational q = 3 surface is located in the ELM perturbed region. A possible explanation for the new mode is as the remnant of a magnetic island created by edge ergodization during the ELM. Consequences for the understanding of the ELM process itself are discussed.

JET plasmas with reverse magnetic field feature a different SOL flow than those with normal field. The observed carbon fuelling efficiency from injecting methane gas was similar in reverse and normal field. EDGE2D modeling used an externally applied force to create the SOL flows, without specifying the origin of the force. The resulting flow agreed reasonably with the experimental values between the separatrix and 4 cm mid-plane depth in the SOL. The effect of the flow on the calculated carbon screening was 5-15% higher carbon fuelling efficiency for the low flow velocity with reverse field. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Clear low frequency (typically 5?25?kHz) coherent type-I ELM precursor modes have been identified in JET. They are detected through various diagnostics, especially in the ECE and Mirnov signals, but also on the SXR cameras and the multichannel O-mode edge reflectometer. The modes propagate in the direction of the ion-diamagnetic drift and are usually accompanied by a slight rise in the divertor D?-emission. The precursors show no radial phase inversions and are localized to a few centimetres inside the separatrix, in the pedestal region. The time by which the precursor onset precedes the ELM event varies greatly, and ranges from 0.2?ms up to several tens of milliseconds, though the timescale has no effect on the characteristics of the precursors. During their lifetime, the precursor amplitude is often seen to fluctuate, and the frequency and dominant n-number of the precursors can change rapidly, typically within 1?ms. The range of toroidal precursor mode numbers n which have been observed is 1?13. Parametric studies show that n seems to be mainly prescribed by a combination of the electron pedestal pressure and the (normalized) electron pedestal collisionality , with increasing leading to higher n-numbers. Above a certain edge collisionality (roughly 1\hbox{--}3 SRC=http://ej.iop.org/images/0029-5515/44/5/005/nf177921in002.gif/>) the precursors seem to be absent, indicating that a sufficiently high edge current is important to destabilize the precursors. The low-n precursors are known to be external kinks (also known on JET as Outer Modes), while experimental findings and their comparison with stability calculations suggest that the precursor modes with higher n are not pure external kinks but coupled ballooning?kink modes. Several hundred discharges have been analysed, and, in discharges with low to moderate edge collisionality, the precursors could be detected prior to most type-I ELMs, while prior to type-III ELMs the modes were not encountered. In spite of their regular occurrence, there is no evidence of the precursor mode growth rate rapidly accelerating before the ELM, indicating that type-I ELMs on JET are not triggered by these modes.

ELMy H-mode experiments at JET in 2000/mid-2002 have focused on discharges with normalized parameters for plasma density, energy confinement and beta similar to those of the ITER Q(DT) = 10 reference regime (n/n(GW) similar to 0.85, H-98(y,H-2) similar to 1, beta(N) similar to 1.8). ELMy H-mode plasmas have been realized reaching or even exceeding those parameters in steady-state conditions (up to similar to5 s or 12tau(epsilon)) in a reproducible way and only limited by the duration of the additional heating phase. These results have been obtained (a) in highly triangular plasmas, by increasing the average triangularity delta towards the ITER reference value (delta similar to 0.5), and (b) in plasmas at low triangularity (delta similar to 0.2) by seeding of Ar and placing the X-point of the plasma on the top of the septum. Pellet injection from the high field side is a third method yielding high density and high confinement, albeit not yet under steady-state conditions. In highly triangular plasmas the influence of input power, plasma triangularity and impurity seeding with noble gases has been studied. Density profile peaking at high densities has been obtained in (a) impurity seeded low triangularity discharges, (b) ELMy H-modes with low levels of input power and (c) discharges fuelled with pellet injection from the high field side. New ELM behaviour has been observed in high triangularity discharges at high density, opening a possible route to ELM heat load mitigation, which can be further amplified by Ar impurity seeding. Current extrapolations of the ELM heat load to ITER show possibly a window for Type I ELM operation. Confinement scaling studies indicate an increase in confinement with triangularity and density peaking, and a decrease in confinement with the Greenwald number. In addition, experiments in H isotope and He indicate tau(E) proportional to M(0.19)Z(-0.59). The threshold power for the L-H transition in He plasmas shows the same parametric dependence as in D plasmas, but with a 50% higher absolute value.
