Abstract: The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

Abstract: During the years 1994–1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 charged-current interactions with a D 0 in the final state were selected by a pattern recognition program and confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. The ratio of decay branching fractions of the D 0 into four charged particles to two charged particles was measured to be B ( D 0 → V 4 ) / B ( D 0 → V 2 ) = 0.207 ± 0.016 ± 0.004 . The inclusive measurement of the observed production rate of the D 0 with a decay into four charged prongs in combination with external measurements of this topological branching ratio was used to determine the total D 0 production rate by neutrinos without additional assumption on the branching fractions. The value of this rate relative to the charged-current cross-section was found to be σ ( D 0 ) / σ ( CC ) = 0.0269 ± 0.0018 ± 0.0013 . In addition, the same normalization method was used to deduce the inclusive topological decay rate into final states with neutral particles only. A value of 0.218 ± 0.049 ± 0.036 was found for this branching fraction. From an observed number of three charged six-prong events the branching ratio into six charged particles was determined to be ( 1.2 −0.9 +1.3 ± 0.2 ) × 10 −3 . A measurement of the energy dependence of the D 0 production by neutrinos relative to the total charged-current cross-section is also reported. This measurement was used to deduce for m c , the effective charm-quark mass, a value of ( 1.42 ± 0.08 ) GeV / c 2 .

Abstract: During the years 1994–1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. A high-statistics sample of neutrino interactions with a D 0 in the final state was collected. Using the decay mode D * + → D 0 π + a production cross-section measurement of the D * + in neutrino–nucleon charged-current interactions was performed. The low Q-value of the decay was used to isolate a sample of candidate events containing a positive hadron with a small p T with respect to the D 0 direction. A signal of 22.1 ± 5.5 D * + events was obtained. The D * + production cross-section relative to the D 0 production cross-section, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( D 0 ) , was estimated to be 0.38 ± 0.09 ( stat ) ± 0.05 ( syst ) . From this result, the fraction of D 0 's produced via the decay of a D * was deduced to be 0.63 ± 0.17 . The D * + production cross-section relative to the ν μ charged-current interaction, σ ( D * + ) / σ ( CC ) , was estimated to be [ 1.02 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.15 ( syst ) ] % .

Abstract: We present a leading order QCD analysis of a sample of neutrino induced charged-current events with two muons in the final state originating in the lead-scintillating fibre calorimeter of the CHORUS detector. The results are based on a sample of 8910 neutrino and 430 antineutrino induced opposite-sign dimuon events collected during the exposure of the detector to the CERN Wide Band Neutrino Beam between 1995 and 1998. The analysis yields a value of the charm quark mass of mc = (1.26 ± 0.16 ± 0.09) GeV / c2 and a value of the ratio of the strange to non-strange sea in the nucleon of κ = 0.33 ± 0.05 ± 0.05, improving the results obtained in similar analyses by previous experiments. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: After completion of the data taking for the ?µ›?? oscillation search, the CHORUS lead-scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. The neutrino-nucleon and anti-neutrino-nucleon differential cross-sections are measured in the range 0.01

Abstract: Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for ντ charged current interactions followed by the τ lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for νμ→ντ oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no τ− candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for ντ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36 182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin22θμτ

Abstract: A study of quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons in charged-current interactions of neutrinos with the nuclear emulsion target of CHORUS is presented. In a sample of about 46 000 interactions located in the emulsion, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified by using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based both on the topological and kinematical characteristics of quasi-elastic charm production allowed a clear separation between events of this type and those in which charm is produced in deep inelastic processes. A final sample containing 13 candidates consistent with quasi-elastic production of a charmed baryon with an estimated background of 1.7 events was obtained. At the average neutrino energy of 27 GeV the cross-section for the total quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons relative to the νN charged-current cross-section was measured to be σ(QE)/σ(CC) = (0.23-0.06+0.02(stat)×10-2. Abstract: A measurement of ?c+ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a subsample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector, exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in A+ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product ?(?c+)/?(CC) × BR(?c+ › 3p) was measured to be (0.37 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.02(syst)) × 10-2, while the values of (1.54 ± 0.35(stat) ± 0.18(syst)) × 10-2 and of 0.24 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) were obtained for ?(?c+)/?(CC) and BR(?c+ › 3p), respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: A search for charm hadron decays into two muons plus one or more hadrons has been carried out using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer. This technique is sensitive to modes with missing neutrals, e.g. π0μ+μ− and ϱ±μ+μ−, as well as to constrained modes having visible invariant masses equal to those of charm states. No evidence for any such decays has been found, which allows upper limits at the 90% confidence level as low as 1.8 × 10−4 to be placed on the branching fractions for charm-changing neutral-current and lepton-number violating decay modes.

Abstract: The relative branching fraction RK = Γ(D0 → K−μ+v)/Γ(D0 → μ−X) has been measured by Fermilab experiment E653, using D0 mesons produced by 600 GeV π−. The semimuonic decay sample of 232 events was identified by the decay chain D ∗+ → D 0 π + , D 0 → μ + h − X , where h is a hadron. The Kμv component was extracted from the joint distribution of these events in the D0 decay variables Mmin and pTh. We find RK = 0.472 ± 0.051 (stat) ± 0.040 (sys), and use a world average of the D0 → Klv branching fraction to obtain the D0 inclusive semimuonic branching fraction B(D0 → μ+X) = (7.67 ± 1.13)%.

Abstract: We report the first observation of the Cabibo disfavored semileptonic decay mode D+ → ρ(770)0 μ+v and measure its decay rate relative to the Cabibbo favored mode D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + v to be Λ(D + → ρ(770) 0 μ + v Λ(D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + v) = 0.044 0.031 −0.025 ( stat. ) ± 0.014 ( syst. ) . The results are compared to theoretical predictions and to previous experimental upper limits.

Abstract: A search for charm production in the coherent diffractive dissociation reaction pSi→XSi was carried out for the modes D0→K−π+, D0→K−π+π+π−, and D+→K−π+π+. No charm signals were observed, and the 90% confidence level upper limit for coherent charm pair production was determined to be 26 μb per silicon nucleus. The results are interpreted as an upper limit of 0.2% on the amount of intrinsic charm in the proton.

From a signal of 18.7±4.9−0.7+0.4 events in the DS+ → oμ+υ channel, the product of production cross section and partial width is measured with respect to that for D + → K ∗0 μ + υ to be ( σ(D S + ) σ(D + )) . (Λ(D S + → oμ + ν)Λ(D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)) = 0.56 ± 0.14 ± 0.12. The form factor ratios in the decay, obtained by fitting to the decay angles and q2, are A 2 (0) 1 (0) = 2.1 −0.5 +0.6 ± 0.2 and V (0) A 1 (0) = 2.3 −0.9 +1.1 ± 0.4 , where A1 (0) and A2 (0) are the axial vector form factors and V(0) is the vector form factor, evaluated at q2 = 0. The first observation of DS+ → (ημ+υ + η'μ+υ) is also reported, and Γ (D S + → (ημ + υ + η'μ + υ)) Γ (D S + → oμ + υ) is determined to be 3.9 ± 1.6.

Abstract: We report on the production characteristics and total cross section for 9 beauty hadron pairs produced by a 600 GeV/ c π − beam, the first such information in this energy region. The events were detected in the hybrid emulsion spectrometer of Fermilab Experiment E653. The measured pair cross section for all χ F , assuming linear A dependence, is 33±11 (stat.)±6(syst.) nb/nucleon. Fits of the inclusive single-hadron production distribution to the forms d σ d χ F ∝ (1−|χ F −χ 0 |) n and d σ d p T 2 ∝ exp (−bp t 2 ) give n=5.0 −2.1−1.7 +2.7+1.7 , χ 0 =0.06 −0.07−0.03 +0.06+0.02 , and b=0.13 −0.04−0.02 +0.05+0.02 ( GeV /c −2 . .The pairs tend to be produced back-to-back.

Abstract: The branching ratio for the decay mode D + → K ∗0 μ + ν has been measured with two methods. The first uses D0→K−μ+ν for normalization, and yields the result B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(3.25±0.71±0.75)% . From this method we also obtain the direct measurement Γ( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)/Γ( D 0 → K − μ + ν)=0.43±0.09±0.09 . The second method uses the mode D+→K−π+π+ for normalization and yields B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(4.18±0.66±0.96)% . Combining the results of the two methods yields B( D + → K ∗0 μ + ν)=(3.57±0.96)% .

Abstract: We present total and differential cross sections for charm mesons produced in 600 GeV/c π- emulsion interactions. Fits to d2σ/dxF dpT2∞ (1−|xF|)nexp (-bpT2) for 676 electronically reconstructed D mesons with xF>0 give n=4.25±0.24 (stat.)±0.23 (syst.) and b=0.76±0.03±0.03 (GeV/c)-2. The total inclusive D+ and D0 cross sections are σ(π-N→D±; xF>0) = 8.66±0.46±1.96μb nucleon and σ(π - N→D 0 D 0 ; x F >0)=22.05±1.37±4.82μb nucleonk, where a linear dependence on the mean atomic weight of the target is assumed. These results are compared to next-to-leading order QCD predictions.

Abstract: A measurement of the form factor ratios in the decay D + → K ∗ (892) 0 μ + ν is obtained by fitting to the decay angles and q2 of 305 events. The results, evaluated at q2 = 0, are A2(0)/A1(0) = 0.82+0.22−0.23 (stat.)±0.11 (sys.) and V(0)/A1(0) = 2.00+0.34−0.32±0.16, where A1 and A2 are the axial vector form factors and V is the vector form factor. The corresponding ratio of the longitudinal to transverse polarization of the K ∗0 is 1.18±0.18±0.08. These results are compared with other experimental results and with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: We report results on D0 and D+ production in proton-emulsion interactions at s =38.7 GeV. A fit to the form (1−|xF|)n exp (−bp 2 T ) yields n=6.9 +1.9 −1.8 and b=0.84 +0.10 −0.08 (GeV/c)−2. The total inclusive cross section, is assuming linear A dependence, is measured to be 38±3(stat.) ±13 (sys.) μb for the D0 and 38±9±14 μb for the D+. A comparison of these results with previous measurements indicates that nuclear effects do not strongly influence charm production. The predictions of QCD are in good agreement with our data.

The predictions of leading order QCD for the distributions in invariant mass, rapidity gap, xF, and polar angle in the charm pair CMS are qualitatively consistent with our measurements. The mean pT of the pairs is equal within errors to that measured in dilepton production at the same energy and mass range.

Abstract: A hybrid apparatus consisting of a movable emulsion target and a magnetic spectrometer was used in a fixed target Fermilab Tevatron experiment to study the production of heavy quarks by high-energy hadron beams. High-resolution silicon microstrip detectors were used for precise tracking in the dense particle environment. Details of the experimental apparatus, including the data acquisition system, are described.

Abstract: WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the Wide Band Neutrino Beam from the CERN-SPS. About 170 000 neutrino interactions were successfully located in the emulsion. Improvements in the automatic emulsion scanning systems and application of different criteria allowed the sample of located events to be used for studies of charm production. We present a measurement of the production rate of D 0 mesons based on a sample of 25 693 located v μ charged-current (CC) interactions analysed so far. After reconstruction of the event topology in the vertex region, 283 D 0 decays were observed with an estimated background of 9.2 K 0 and Λ decays. The ratio of cross-section of D 0 production and v μ CC interactions is found to be (1.99 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.17(syst.)) × 10 -2 at 27 GeV average v μ energy. © 2002 Elsevier Science B. V. Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the CERN-SPS Wide Band Neutrino Beam. The improvements of the past few years in the automatic emulsion scanning systems allowed a sample of events located in emulsion to be used for studies of charm production. Based on a sample of 56172vμu charged-current interactions analysed so far, we find a value of Bμ = 0.093 ± 0.009(stat.) ± 0.009(syst.) for the semi-leptonic branching fraction of charm hadrons. The result for events with visible energy larger than 30 GeV, Bμ = 0.102 ± 0.016(stat.) ± 0.010(syst.), can be combined with the existing measurements of the dimuon rate to yield a value of 0.219 ± 0.022 for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element \Vcd\. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for ν μ → ν τ oscillation, has been successlly constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract: Events which satisfy the kinematics of p( 16 O,CHep), with low excitation energy in the (CHe) system and a low-energy recoil proton, have been identified in the interactions of 200 GeV/nucleon 16 O ions with nuclear emulsion. An eikonal DWIA estimate of the target A -dependence of strong-interaction diffractive dissociation suggests that, on the basis of these hydrogen data, most of the (CHe) final states, previously ascribed to electromagnetic dissociation on heavy nuclei, might rather be hadronic in character. This contamination is very much less important in the dominant (NH) channel.

Abstract: This paper presents and contrasts features of the inelastic nuclear reactions of 200 GeV/nucleon 16O and 32S ions with emulsion nuclei. Both the multiplicities of shower particles and the extent of target fragmentation have been studied for varying degress of disruption of the projectile nuclei. The results may be interpreted within a simple geometrical model. In particular the rapidity distributions of those events which exhibit complete projectile break-up without any overt sign of low-energy target fragmentation have been determined. The interaction of secondary projectile fragments of charge two or more issuing from oxygen interactions were also studied and the mean free paths in emulsion of the primary 16O and 32S ions and all such fragments have been compared to those predicted by a simple Glauber model.

Abstract: This work represents the results of an experimental investigation of the electromagnetic dissociation of 200 GeV/nucleon 16 O and 32 S ions in nuclear emulsions. Exclusive channels involving charged fragments have been studied as a function of the energy released, and, assuming a Weizsacker-Williams spectrum of virtual photons, there is a good agreement with results for the (γ, p) processes obtained with real photons. However, the rates found for other processes are larger, in particular for the (γ, α) on both nuclei. The values of the total integrated absorption cross sections are generally larger than those obtained from real photon experiments but the extent of the discrepancy depends strongly upon which photon results are used in the comparison.

Abstract: Evidence is reported for the simultaneous production of four charmed particles in interactions induced by 350 GeV/ c π − mesons in stacks of nuclear emulsions. The events were found during a search for beauty particles among a sample of about 200 interactions with candidates for charmed particles. The events selected required the presence of at least one muon with a high component of momentum transverse to the beam direction.

Abstract: The azimuthal correlation distribution of 102 charmed-particle pairs observed in the hybrid emulsion experiment WA75 is compared with theoretical predictions. The various pairs - (D − D 0 ), (D − D + ), (D 0 D 0 ) and (D + D 0 )-all s how, within statistical error, the same azimuthal correlation distribution, demonstrating its independence from the specific nature of the production channel. Among the decays of 150 charged charmed particles and 138 neutral ones seen, higher multiplicities are favoured for hadronic as opposed to semileptonic decays. The data are consistent with the muonic decays of charged D mesons proceeding through the channels (μ ± , v, K 0 ) and [μ ± , v, K ∗0 (892)] , the fraction through K 0 being 0.76±0.06.

Abstract: Using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer installed in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam, we located a total of 3855 neutrino interactions in the fiducial volume of our target. For 122 charmed-particle decays found in these interactions, we present distributions of x , y , charm-muon angular projection, Feynman- X , and the fragmentation Z . We find that the number of strange quarks in the nucleon sea is 4.2±2.1±2.6% of the number of down quarks.

Abstract: We have found 122 charmed-particle decays among 3855 neutrino interactions located in the fiducial volume of a hybrid emulsion spectrometer installed in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam. We obtain an average relative charmed-particle production cross section of σ(ν μ → c μ − ) σ(ν μ →μ − ) =4.9 −0.6 +0.7 % , at an average neutrino energy of 22 GeV. We also obtain a production rate of σ(ν μ → c c ν μ ) σ(ν μ →ν μ ) =0.13 −0.11 +0.31 % , if we assume that there was an undetected muon, a limit of σ(ν μ → c c μ − ) σ(ν μ → c μ − ) CL ) can be obtained. Other cross section ratios and limits are also presented.

Abstract: The production of charmed particles has been measured using a hybrid emulsion spectrometer in the Fermilab wide-band neutrino beam. The relative cross section for charged current charmed particle production is σ(v → μ−c)/σ(v → μ−) = 6.5 ±1.91.8%, and the energy dependence of the cross section is presented. One event with charm pair production was observed. A limit of σ(v → μcc)/σ(v → μc) < 6% (90% CL) is found for the ratio of charged current pair and single charm production.

Abstract: The associated production of a pair of beauty particles B- and B0 by a 350 GeV π- interaction has been observed in an emulsion target inserted in an array of silicon microstrip detectors. Both beauty particles decay into charm particles, both of which are also observed to decay in the emulsion. Two negative muons were identified and their momenta measured in a large muon spectrometer. One muon has a pT of 1.9 GeV/c and is associated with a beauty particle decay. The other, with a pT of 0.45 GeV/c is associated with a charm particle decay. The flight times of the two beauty particles are respectively (0.8 ± 0.1) × 10-13 s and (5+2 -1) × 10-13 s. Abstract: The double lump structure of the produced mesons and the persistency of the original nucleons in high energy nuclear interaction are found. An empirical model of multiple meson production in a nucleonnucleon collision is constructed on these experimental bases. Assuming the symmetry about the two colliding nucleons in C.M.S. the collision is divided into two parts belonging to each nucleon. And, a physical quantity named «momentum of interaction» is introduced, which is the momentum difference between the initial and final state in each part. This quantity is considered to be a parameter representing the magnitude of the effect of the interaction in the collision. The average value of this quantity in high energy jets are found to be of the order of unity in nucleon mass units independently from the incident energy. Taking as a working hypothesis an empirical relation between the «momentum of interaction» and the recoil momentum of the target nucleon in L.S. which is suggested in the analysis of one high energy jet, the details of the collision are determined in our model by the magnitude of the incident energy and that of the «momentum of interaction». This model can explain the variety of the experimental data of high energy jets which have been accumulated up to now. The physical significance of the basic assumptions of this model should be searched for in future.

Abstract: Observation of J/? production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band ?µ beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section ?J/? = (6.3 ± 3.0) × 10-41 cm2 is obtained for 20 GeV ? E? ? 200 GeV. The data are compared with the theoretical model based on the QCD Z-gluon fusion mechanism. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: An attempt at the direct observation of the cascade decay of beauty particles, produced by π- of 350 GeV/c leading to 3 muons or 4 muons in the final state, has been made in an emulsion/counter hybrid experiment at CERN.
