Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research / A 950, 162969 (2020). doi:10.1016/j.nima.2019.162969, The technological prototype of the CALICE highly granular silicon–tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (SiW-ECAL) was tested in a beam at DESY in 2017. The setup comprised seven layers of silicon sensors. Each layer comprised four sensors, with each sensor containing an array of 256 5.5×5.5 mm$^2$ silicon PIN diodes. The four sensors covered a total area of 18 × 18 cm and comprised a total of 1024 channels. The readout was split into a trigger line and a charge signal line. Key performance results for signal over noise for the two output lines are presented, together with a study of the uniformity of the detector response. Abstract

The excellent jet energy resolution required for precise physics measurements at ILC is achievable using a Particle Flow Method and highly granular calorimeters. As it was shown by CALICE international R&D collaboration, the silicon-tungsten imaging electromagnetic calorimeter provides the best granularity, stability and resolution of jet energy measurement. After proving the calorimeter concept with physical prototypes in 2005–2011, an emphasis is now moved to building a technological prototype satisfying challenging requirements. All chosen technologies should be reliable and scalable for a mass production of a future detector. We report on the current status of R&D, in particular, on beam and charge injection tests of the technological prototype and on the tests of ECAL mechanical structure. We also report on our plans to build a realistic prototype detector and test it together with an existing carbon fiber-tungsten mechanical structure. A similar silicon-tungsten calorimeter technology has been recently proposed for the Phase 2 upgrade of CMS end-cap calorimeter and future high energy circular collider projects.

Abstract

The goal of the FAZIA Collaboration is the design of a new-generation 4π detector array for heavy-ion collisions with radioactive beams. This article summarizes the main results of the R&D phase, devoted to the search for significant improvements of the techniques for charge and mass identification of reaction products. This was obtained by means of a systematic study of the basic detection module, consisting of two transmission-mounted silicon detectors followed by a CsI(Tl) scintillator. Significant improvements in ΔE-E and pulse-shape techniques were obtained by controlling the doping homogeneity and the cutting angles of silicon and by putting severe constraints on thickness uniformity. Purposely designed digital electronics contributed to identification quality. The issue of possible degradation related to radiation damage of silicon was also addressed. The experimental activity was accompanied by studies on the physics governing signal evolution in silicon. The good identification quality obtained with the prototypes during the R&D phase, allowed us to investigate also some aspects of isospin physics, namely isospin transport and odd-even staggering. Now, after the conclusion of the R&D period, the FAZIA Collaboration has entered the demonstrator phase, with the aim of verifying the applicability of the devised solutions for the realization of a larger-scale experimental set-up.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; Current pulses induced in a silicon detector by 10 different heavy ion species at known energies around 10 AMeV have been sampled in time at high frequency. Their individual average shapes are quite well reproduced by a fit procedure based on our recent charge carrier collection treatment which considers the progressive extraction of the electrons and holes from the high carrier density zone along the ionizing particle track. This region is assumed to present a supplementary dielectric polarization and consequently a disturbe delectric field.The influence of the nature of the heavy ion on the values of the three fit parameters is analyzed.

Abstract

WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. Abstract

We investigated the performance of synthetic high purity monocrystalline diamond radiation detectors fabricated with TiW, Cr/Au and a novel metallization technique utilising diamond-like carbon tunnelling junction and Pt/Au as electrical contacts. The investigation was carried out under irradiation with 60Co gamma-rays, 90Sr electrons and 241Am alpha-particles. The experimental results with respect to I-V dark current levels, irradiation photocurrent, signal-to-noise ratio and time response have been compared and discussed. Results show an ohmic behaviour of the DLC/Pt/Au contact, a charge collection efficiency of 100% at an applied electric field of 0.377 V/ mum for all electrical contacts (under 90Sr electrons irradiation) at a correspondent dark current value of less than a picoAmpere. The single crystal CVD DLC/Pt/Au diamond radiation detector reported here shows spectroscopic energy resolution of 1.1% at an applied voltage of +450 volts (0.9 V/mum) under 5.5 MeV alpha particle irradiation. No dasiamemorypsila or dasiapumpingpsila effect was observed for the DLC/Pt/Au contact at positive bias; the signal was also stable (fluctuations below 0.5%) and reproducible under 60Co irradiation, with a signal-to-noise ratio > 10000:1 and a linearity in the dose rate response.

Abstract

Current and charge signals have been collected for Se ions at 408 MeV, S at 160 MeV and Ni at 703 MeV, all stopped in silicon detectors. Some detectors were cut 0 ∘ off the 〈 1 1 1 〉 axis and some off the 〈 1 0 0 〉 axis. Important effects on the shape of the silicon current and charge signals have been observed, depending on the orientation of the impinging ion relative to the crystal axes and planes. A degradation of the energy and risetime resolution of about a factor ∼ 3 with respect to the measured optimal values (for example 7 ∘ off-axis orientation) is observed for ion impinging directions close to crystal axes and/or planes, i.e. the common scenario for normal incidence on 0 ∘ cut detectors. For Pulse Shape Analysis applications, the necessity of using such “random” oriented silicon detectors is demonstrated.

The emission of low energy, 1 A –6 A MeV, medium size, Z =3–12, fragments in 16 O + 27 Al reactions at 94 A MeV has been studied. In addition to a fragmentation component with ∼ 15 A MeV/ c parallel- and transverse momentum shifts, another component with larger momentum width is needed to describe the results. An attempt to use the VUU prescription indicates that secondary decay from excited primary fragments is important.

NESTER SEP ACC; We have developed a new telescope array, dedicated to the study of direct reactions of exotic nuclei on light targets in inverse kinematics. This device, called MUST2, is briefly described, and the results of the first tests performed with an alpha source and Ni beams at 10 and 75 MeV/u on a CDH target are presented.

Abstract

Shape analyses of current pulses delivered by semiconductor detectors under impact of high velocity atomic clusters have been performed for the first time. We show in this paper that the shape of the current pulse depends sensitively on the cluster size. When the cluster is fragmented, the obtained signal is found to result from the sum of signals associated with individual fragment impacts so that recognition of the fragmentation pathway is made possible in an unambiguous way. Application to the extraction of the 29 fragmentation channels of neutral C 9 clusters is presented.

Abstract

We present test results on the use of thin ion implanted epitaxial Si detectors for registration of low- and medium-energy heavy fragments in nuclear reactions. A linear energy response for very low energy nuclei has been observed. A test of 10 μm + 300 μm telescopes under realistic experimental conditions for heavy ion experiments exhibits the possibilities to use these detectors for the measurements of multifragmentation products.

Abstract

A new and innovative array, MUST, based on silicon strip technology and dedicated to the study of reactions induced by radioactive beams on light particles is described. The detector consists of 8 silicon strip – Si(Li) telescopes used to identify recoiling light charged particles through time of flight, energy loss and energy measurements and to determine precisely their scattering angle through X, Y position measurements. Each 60×60 mm 2 double sided silicon strip detector with 60 vertical and 60 horizontal strips yields an X – Y position resolution of 1 mm, an energy resolution of 50 keV, a time resolution of around 1 ns and a 500 keV energy threshold for protons. The backing Si(Li) detectors stop protons up to 25 MeV with a resolution of approximately 50 keV. CsI crystals read out by photo-diodes which stop protons up to 70 MeV are added to the telescopes for applications where higher energy particles need to be detected. The dedicated electronics in VXIbus standard allow us to house the 968 logic and analog channels of the array in one crate placed adjacent to the reaction chamber and fully remote controlled, including pulse visualization on oscilloscopes. A stand alone data acquisition system devoted to the MUST array has been developed. Isotope identification of light charged particles over the full energy range has been achieved, and the capability of the system to measure angular distributions of states populated in inverse kinematics reactions has been demonstrated.
