Abstract: A measurement of the polarization of Λ and Λ ¯ baryons produced in pC and pW collisions at s = 41.6 GeV has been performed with the HERA-B spectrometer. The measurements cover the kinematic range of 0.6 GeV / c p ⊥ 1.2 GeV / c in transverse momentum and − 0.15 x F 0.01 in Feynman-x. The polarization results from the two different targets agree within the statistical error. In the combined data set, the largest deviation from zero, + 0.054 ± 0.029 , is measured for x F ≲ − 0.07 . Zero polarization is expected at x F = 0 in the absence of nuclear effects. The polarization results for the Λ agree with a parametrization of previous measurements which were performed at positive x F values, where the Λ polarization is negative. Results of Λ ¯ polarization measurements are consistent with zero.

Abstract: The performance of the ring imaging Cherenkov counter (RICH) for the HERA-B experiment has been evaluated. The measured values of the basic parameters such as the number of detected photons per ring and Cherenkov angle resolution are found to agree with a priori estimates. Also at higher track densities, the detector is capable of identifying individual rings. Particle identification has been achieved by determining the momentum from tracks in the vertex detector and main tracking system, hits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and track directions as measured by the RICH.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e- storage ring DORIS II, we have searched for the real and imaginary part of the electric dipole formfactor d_tau of the tau lepton in the production of tau pairs at q^2=100 GeV^2. This is the first direct measurement of this CP violating formfactor. We applied the method of optimised observables which takes into account all available information on the observed tau decay products. No evidence for CP violation was found, and we derive the following results: Re(d_tau)=(1.6+-.9)*10^(-16) ecm and Im(d_tau)=(-0.2+-0.8)*10^(-16) ecm, where statistical and systematic errors have been combined., 8 pages, 5 figures (10 subfigures)

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have found evidence for the production of the excited charmed baryon state Λc(2593)+ in the channel Λc+π+π−. Its mass was determined to be (2594.6±0.9±0.4) MeV/c2, and the natural width measured to be Γ = (2.9−2.1−1.4+2.9+1.8) MeV. The production cross section times the branching ratios of σ(e+e− → Λc(2593)+X) × Br(Λc(2593)+ → Λc+π+π−) × Br(Λc+ → pK−π+) was measured to be (0.25−0.13+0.24 ±0.13) pb. The fractions of Λc(2593)+ decays proceeding through the Σc0π+ and Σc++π− channels were determined to be 0.29±0.10±0.11 and 0.37±0.12±0.13, respectively.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have made two measurements of the mixing parameter χd using kaons as flavour tags. Using D∗+ K± correlations we found χd = 0.20 ± 0.13 ± 0.12 and from the study of (D∗+l−) K± correlations we obtained χd = 0.19 ± 0.07 ± 0.09. The branching ratio for B → D∗+ X has been updated: Br(B → D∗+ X) = (19.6 ± 1.9)%. We have also determined the average multiplicity of charged kaons in B0 decays to be 0.78 ± 0.08.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e - storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied lepton energy spectra in ~- decays. We present a "pseudo-rest-frame" technique in which the second r in the event, decaying into a heavy hadronic system, is used as reference. This method allows for the first measurement of the Michel Parameter 7/in ~- decays. We also determine the Michel Parameter p in 7" --~ e~u decays with a precision comparable to the present world average. The measured values of the parameters p = 0.735 4- 0.036 4- 0.020 and r 1 = 0.03 4- 0.18 4- 0.12 are in good agreement with standard V-A coupling at the ~--~,-W vertex.

Abstract: Using the detector ARGUS at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decays Λc+ → Ξ−K+π+ and Λc+ → Ξ∗0K+ and obtained evidence for the decay Ξc0 → ΛKs0. All three of these decays are of interest as they provide information about W-exchange processes. The products of cross sections and branching ratios for Λc+ → Ξ−K+π+ and Λc+ → Ξ∗0K+ are (1.7±0.3±0.3) pb and (0.6±0.2±0.1) pb, respectively, which implies that (35±17) % of the Ξ−K+π+ final state is generated through a two-body decay via intermediate W-exchange. The product of production cross section and branching ratio for Ξc0 → Λ Ks0 is (2.1 ± 1.0 ± 0.6) pb.

Abstract: Polarization in the exclusive decay B → J/ψK ∗ was measured using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II. The ratio of the transverse to the total decay width was found to be ΓT/Γ = 0.03±0.16±0.15. This measurement demonstrates that the B 0 → J/ψK ∗0 decay channel can be effectively used for CP violation studies.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring we have investigated the Lorentz structure of the electroweak interaction in semi-hadronic τ decays. Spin correlations in the process e + e − → τ + τ − → v τ π + π 0 v τ π − π 0 are exploited for a measurement of the normalized product of the vector ( g V ) and axial vector ( g A ) couplings of the τ lepton, γin AV = 2 Re {g A g V ∗ } (|g V | 2 ) . The correlations are sensitive to the product of the couplings in both τ decays: γ AV 2 = γ AV (τ − → ν τ W − ) AV = −h(v τ )h( v τ ) . The measured value, γ AV 2 = 1.044±0.057±0.060, determines the relative sign of the neutrino helicities. Assuming CP invariance, the absolute value | γ AV | = 1.022±0.028±0.030 was found to be incellent agreement with the Standard Model. The contribution of scalar ( g s ) or pseudoscalar ( g P ) couplings was also investigated. No evidence for a scalar-like coupling was found.

Abstract: An analysis of the reaction yy ~ r/c was l~erformed in five different decay channels of the r/c: /~sK+~r ~, K+K-Tr+~ "- , 27r+21r -, ~b~b and 2K+2K -. A value Fry(r/c) = ( 11.3 + 4.2) keV was obtained for the radiative decay width by combining the results from the first four channels. Using our result on the two-photon width we also determined the branching ratio for the decay r/c --~ 2K+2K -.

Abstract: We present the results of a partial reconstruction of the decay channel B − → D j (∗) π − performed using the ARGUS detector operating at the e+e− storage-ring DORIS II. In the context of this paper, D j (∗)0 is an L = 1 excited charm meson decaying to D ∗+ π − . The measured product of branching ratios is Br(B − → D 1 0 (2414)π − ) · Br Br(D 1 0 → D ∗+ π − ) = (0.17 ± 0.05 ± 0.04)% where the first error is statistical and statistical and the second systematic. No evidence for the decay B − → D 2 ∗0 (2459) π − ) · Br(D 2 ∗0 → D ∗+ π − ) at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied the decay B 0 → D ∗+ l − v by exploiting a partial D ∗+ reconstruction technique. The branching ratio for this mode was thereby determined to be (4.5 ± 0.3 ± 0.4)%. Using the corresponding sample of tagged B 0 mesons, we measured the B 0 B 0 mixing parameter to be r d = 0.194 ± 0.062 ± 0.054, a result only weakly dependent upon the ratio of semileptonic widths for and production rates of B 0 and B + mesons. We have also determined the branching ratio Br ( B 0 → X l − v to be (9.3 ± 1.1 ± 1.5)%. By comparing the results for full and partial D ∗+ reconstuction we found the absolute branching ratios for D 0 → K − π + and D 0 → K − π + π + π − to be (4.5 ± 0.6 ± 0.4)% and (7.9 ± 1.5 ± 0.9)%, respectively.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed a new charmed baryon state in the channel Λc+π+π−. (All references to a specific charged state also imply the charge conjugate state.) The mass of this state was measured to be (2626.6 ± 0.5 ± 1.5) MeV/c2. The product of the production cross section and branching ratio for this channel was determined to be (11.5 ± 2.5 ± 3.0) pb, and the natural width estimated to be smaller than 3.2 MeV/c2 at 90% CL.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II, we have determined the Michel parameters ϱ and ξ of τ → μν ν and τ → eν ν decays. From a data sample with 333 events/pb around s = 10 GeV , we select 3230 events e + e − → τ + τ − → (μ ± μ μ )( e ǂv v ) and determine ϱ from the e and μ momentum spectra and ξ from the correlations between e and μ momenta. For ϱ we obtain ϱτ→e = 0.79 ± 0.08 ± 0.06 and ϱτ→μ = 0.76 ± 0.08 in accordance with the V - A structure of the decays. The momentum correlations are only sensitive to the product ξτ→eξτ→μ. Setting ξτ→e = ξτ→μ, we obtain |ξτ| = 0.90 ± 0.15 ± 0.10 also in accordance with V - A. The updated decay fractions are B(τ → e v v ) = (17.5 ± 0.3 ± 0.5)% and B(τ → μv v ) = (17.4 ± 0.3 ± 0.5)% .

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS-II electron-positron storage ring at DESY, we have investigated the exclusive decay D ∗+ → D 0 π + , D 0 → K S 0 π + π − . From a partial wave analysis of the KS0π+π− system we find that (71.8± 4.2 ± 3.0)% are D 0 → K ∗− π + and (22.7 ± 3.2 ± 0.9)% are D 0 → K 0 ϱ 0 with a relative phase of (−137 ± 7 ± 3)° between the channels. The remaining fraction can be described by several channels involving excited resonances, but not by a three-body phase space decay, thus giving first evidence for D0 decays into K 0 ∗ (1430) − π + , K 0 f 0 (1975), K 0 f 2 (1270) , and K 0 f 0 (1400) .

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e - storage ring using DORIS II at DESY, we have observed a new decay channel for the excited charm-strange meson D s1 (2536) + →D∗ O K + . The production cross section for the D s 1 (2536) + decaying via this channel is measured to be σ ( D s1 (2536) + )· BR (D sl (2536) + →D∗ 0 K + )= 18±4±3 pb at E CM = 10.4 GeV. The mass of the D s 1 (2536) + is found to be 2535.2 ± 0.5±1.5 MeV/ c 2 in agreement with the value obtained from an analysis of the D s1 (2536) + →D∗ + K 0 s decay channel. The natural width is determined to be less than 3.9 MeV/ c 2 at 90%CL.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, a new measurement of the mass of the τ lepton has been obtained. An analysis of the tau pseudomass spectrum for decays of the type τ− → π−π−π+ντ finds mτ = 1776.3±2.4±1.4 MeV/c2. This result also leads to an improvement of the upper limit on the ντ mass to mντ < 31 MeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have obtained the first evidence for B meson decays into χ c mesons. The inclusive branching ratio for the decay B → χ c X was measured to the (1.05±0.35±0.25)% assuming no χ c2 production. In addition, four candidates for the exclusive decay B ± → χ c1 K ± have been observed, corresponding to a branching ratio of (0.19 ± 0.13 ± 0.06)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY we have studied the decay B − → D ∗0 l − λ , where l − = e − or μ − , using the D 0 γ and D 0 π 0 decay modes of the D ∗0 meson. B mesons were produced in 209 000 decays of γ (4S). Assuming electron-muon universality, we obtain a value for the branching ratio of BR ( B − → D ∗0 l − λ )= (5.8 ± 1.4 ± 1.3)% .

Abstract: Direct observations of the semileptonic decay of Λc+ in the decay channels Λc+→Λe+X and Λc+→Λμ+X have been made using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring. The cross section times branching ratio were found to be σ(e+e−→Λc+X)·BR(Λc+→Λe+X)=4.20±1.28±0.71 pb and σ(e+e−→Λc+X)·BR(Λc+→Λμ+X)=3.91±2.02±0.90 pb.

Abstract: An analysis of the decay τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ has been performed with the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. From a study of the two pion subsystems we have found first evidence for the decays τ− → ϱ0π−π0ντ, τ− → ϱ −π+π−ντ, and τ− → ϱ+π−π−ντ with relative contributions to the decay τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ of 0.30 ± 0.04, 0.26 ± 0.05, and 0.10 ± 0.03, respectively. The fraction of the subchannel τ− → ωπ−ντ has been determined to be 0.33 ± 0.05. The production of ϱ mesons is enhanced by a factor of 1.9 ± 0.3 over that of ω mesons. We conclude that in more than 81% (95% CL) of all τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ decays either a ϱ or ω meson is produced.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied semileptonic charmed meson decays through ф- and K ∗0 -electron correlations in continuum production. Evidence for the decay D − s →фe − v has been observed, with a branching ratio relative to the channel D − s →фπ − determined to be 0.57±0.15±0.15. The decay D − →K ∗0 e − v was also seen, with a value of 0.55±0.08±0.10 extracted for the branching ratio relative to the channel D − →K + π − π − . The ratio of the two measurements, after application of SU(3) corrections, implies a branching ratio for D − s →фπ − of (2.4±1.0)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+ e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY we have updated our result on charmless semileptonic B decays and searched for direct evidence for b→u transitions through reconstruction of complete events. This approach has successfully identified two ϒ (4S) events which contain B meson decays to a non-charm final state. In one case, a B0 meson is found in the channel π + μ − ν , while in the other a decay B+→ωμ+ν is seen. These events show that the previously observed signal of charmless semileptonic B decays is due to b→u transitions from which we obtain | V ub V cb | = 0.11±0.012 using the model of Altarelli et al.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e + e − storage ring we measured for the first time the τ neutrino helicity from a parity violating asymmetry in the τ decay into three charged pions. From the measured asymmetry we derived the normalized product of the axial and vector coupling constant 2 g A g v / ( g A 2 + g V 2 ) = 1.14±0.34 −0.17 0.34 , which is in good agreement with the standard model prediction.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS-II, we have measured the inclusive semileptonic decays of B-mesons into electrons and muons. The data originate from 220.5 events/pb on the ϒ(4S) resonance. We find BR (B→e + v e X = (10.3 ± 0.6 ± 0.2)% and BR (B→ μ + v μ X) = (10.0 ± 0.6 ± 0.2)% using the model of Altarelli et al. for extrapolating over all lepton momenta, and BR (B→e + v e X) = (9.9±0.6)%, BR(B→ μ + v μ X) = (9.7±0.6)% using the model of Grinstein et al. For semileptonic decays into baryons, we obtain an upper limit of BR ( B → p e + v X ) CL ) .

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed production of the charmed-strange baryon Ξc+ and its neutral isospin partner, the Ξc0. The Ξc+ was reconstructed in the final state Ξ−π+π+, while the Ξc0 was seen in decay to Ξ−π+ and Ξ−π+π+π−. The average Ξc fragmentation spectrum has been determined, as well as the production cross section times branching ratio for each decay mode. The charged and neutral masses were measured to be 2465.1 ± 3.6 ± 1.9 MeV/c2 and 2472.1 ± 2.7 ± 1.6 MeV/c2 respectively, corresponding to a mass-splitting, M(Ξc+) − M(Ξc0), of −7.0±4.5±2.2 MeV/c2.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring we have studied the electron and muon energy spectra in τ − → e − ν ν and τ − →μ − ν ν decays. The measured value of the Michel parameter, ρ=0.742±0.035±0.020, is in good agreement with a standard V-A coupling at the τ-ντ-W vertex. Pure V, A and V + A couplings are completely excluded by this measurement. Upper limits have been obtained for two-body tau decays, including final states with a Goldstone boson.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e - storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decay D s + → η'π + in two decay modes of the η'. We measure the ratio of branching ratios BR(D s + → η'π + )/BR(D s + → Oπ + ) to be 2.5±0.5±0.3.

Abstract: A detailed description of an original method used to measure the luminosity accumulated by the HERA-B experiment for a data sample taken during the 2002-2003 HERA running period is reported. We show that, with this method, a total luminosity measurement can be achieved with a typical precision, including overall systematic uncertainties, at a level of 5% or better. We also report evidence for the detection of delta-rays generated in the target and comment on the possible use of such delta rays to measure luminosity., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The HERA-B RICH uses a radiation path length of 2.8 m in C_4F_10 gas and a large 24 square meters spherical mirror for imaging Cherenkov rings. The photon detector consists of 2240 Hamamatsu multi-anode photomultipliers with about 27000 channels. A 2:1 reducing two-lens telescope in front of each PMT increases the sensitive area at the expense of increased pixel size, resulting in a contribution to the resolution which roughly matches that of dispersion. The counter was completed in January of 1999, and its performance has been steady and reliable over the years it has been in operation. The design performance of the RICH was fully reached: the average number of detected photons in the RICH for a beta=1 particle was found to be 33 with a single hit resolution of 0.7 mrad and 1 mrad in the fine and coarse granularity regions, respectively., Comment: 29 pages, 23 figures

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have searched for decays b → sgluon through full reconstruction of a whole event. Two B B decays were found with one of B meson decaying into a final state without charmed particles. We also obtained an upper limit of Br(B+ → τ+ντ) of 1.04% at 90% CL.
