1. Neutron-induced nucleation inside bubble chambers using Freon 115 as the active medium

Abstract

Neutron imaging is used in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments to measure the core symmetry of imploded targets. Liquid bubble chambers have the potential to obtain higher resolution images of the targets for a shorter source–target distance than typical scintillator arrays. Due to the fact that nucleation models used in gel detectors research cannot always give correct estimates for the neutron-induced bubble density inside a liquid bubble chamber, an improved theoretical model to describe the mechanism of bubble formation for Freon 115 as the active medium has been developed. It shows that the size of the critical radius for the nucleation process determines the mechanism of bubble formation and the sensitivity of the active medium to the 14.1-MeV incident neutrons resulting from ICF implosions. The bubble-growth mechanism is driven by the excitation of the medium electronic levels and not by electrons ejected from the medium's atoms as happens for the bubble chambers used to detect charged particles. The model accurately predicts the neutron-induced bubble density measured on OMEGA with both liquid bubble chambers and gel detectors.

Abstract

Experiments E866 and E917 at the AGS have measured the differential invariant yields of positive and negative charged kaons from Au+Au collisions at beam kinetic energies in the laboratory of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.8 A·GeV. At each beam energy, a multiplicity array is used to select on the centrality of the collision.

Abstract

Antiproton production in heavy ion collisions reflects subtle interplay between initial production and absorption by nucleons. Because the AGS energies (10--20 A(center-dot)GeV/c) are close to the antiproton production threshold, antiproton may be sensitive to cooperative processes such as QGP and hadronic multi-step processes. On the other hand, antiproton has been proposed as a probe of baryon density due to large N(anti N) annihilation cross sections. Cascade models predict the maximum baryon density reaches about 10 times the normal nucleus density in central Au+Au collisions, where the strong antiproton absorption is expected. In this paper, the authors show systematic studies of antiproton production from p+A to Au+Au collisions.

Abstract

Recent π − π − correlation measurements and deuteron to proton yield ratio measurements for AuAu collisions from Brookhaven E866 are presented. These measurements allow us, with some interpretation, to deduce the size of the participant region in a heavy ion collision. An unpredicted rise of the apparent source size is seen in the π − π − data at midrapidity. No corresponding drop in the deuteron to proton yield ratio is seen. Further experimental study is needed to improve the statistical significance of the correlation result and to determine whether it can be explained by conventional hadronic means.

Abstract

In this article, we present recent results on particle production from Au+Au collisions at 11 A GeV/c obtained by the E866 experiment. The experiment studies the particle production in high baryon density matter created in central Au + Au collisions. Preliminary results of proton and pion production have been reported in previous Quark Matter conferences. Two particle correlation data for Au + Au collisions in this experiment are presented in another paper in this conference.

Abstract

This paper presents recent results from Experiment 859 at the BNL AGS, focussing on strangeness ( K ± , Λ, Λ ), rare probes ( p , φ) and two-particle correlations. Highlights of the paper include an analysis of the centrality dependence of K ± yields in terms of the number of participants, a brief review of the current status of the E859 Λ and Λ data, an analysis of the target dependence of p yields in terms of p K − ratio's, results of a re-analysis of Λ feed-down contamination of p 's, a comparison of the cenal SiAu and pp φ yields through the φ K − ratio, an extremely preliminary study of the centrality dependence of the φ line-shape, a summary of the centrality dependence of two-π correlation source sizes, and a comparison of results from two-dimensional analyses of the two-π and two-K + correlation functions.

Abstract

PHENIX has measured the centrality dependence of charged hadron p_T spectra from central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV. The truncated mean p_T decreases with centrality for p_T > 2 GeV/c, indicating an apparent reduction of the contribution from hard scattering to high p_T hadron production. For central collisions the yield at high p_T is shown to be suppressed compared to binary nucleon-nucleon collision scaling of p+p data. This suppression is monotonically increasing with centrality, but most of the change occurs below 30% centrality, i.e. for collisions with less than about 140 participating nucleons. The observed p_T and centrality dependence is consistent with the particle production predicted by models including hard scattering and subsequent energy loss of the scattered partons in the dense matter created in the collisions., 7 pages text, LaTeX, 6 figures, 2 tables, 307 authors, resubmitted to Phys. Abstract

Energy spectra of fragments (2 ⩽ Z f ⩽ 14) from the interaction of energetic protons and xenon nuclei have been measured over a range of incident proton energies between 1 and 19 GeV using an internal gas jet target in the AGS. Fragment differential cross sections increase by at least an order-of-magnitude between 1 and 10 GeV for all elements. Analysis of the fragment energy spectra indicates the possibility of an additional fragment producing mechanism, consistent with a binary process, at energies below 6 GeV.

Abstract

Energy spectra of fragments, 3≤Z≤14, from the Interaction of 1–20 GeV protons with xenon have been measured over a nearly continuous range of proton energies using an Internal gas Jet target In the AGS. Analysis of the fragment energy spectra shows the presence of two distinct fragment production mechanisms below 6 GeV, which we Identify as binary and multi-fragment break up.The relative contribution of the binary process decreases with increasing proton energy and becomes negligible above 6 GeV. The data for the multi-fragment component above 4 GeV are consistent with the formation of fragments from a supersaturated gas of nucleons.The coexistence curve and the critical temperature are approached monotonically with increasing proton energy.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for the emission of intermediate-mass fragments (3less than or equal toZ/sub f/less than or equal to14) at 48.5/sup 0/ and 131.5/sup 0/ in the interaction of xenon with 1--19 GeV protons have been measured. The excitation functions rise sharply with energy up to /similar to/10 GeV and then level off. The energy spectra were fitted with an expression based on the phase transition droplet model. Excellent fits with reasonable parameters were obtained for E/sub p/greater than or equal to9 GeV. Below 6 GeV, the fits show an increasing contribution with decreasing energy from another mechanism, believed to be binary breakup. A droplet model fit to the cross sections ascribed to the multifragmentation component is able to reproduce the variation of the yields with both fragment mass and proton energy. The results are interpreted in terms of the phase diagram of nuclear matter.
