Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of 241Am is an important quantity for nuclear energy production and fuel cycle scenarios. Several measurements have been performed in recent years with the aim to reduce existing uncertainties in evaluated data. Two previous measurements, performed at the 185 m flight-path station EAR1 of the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN, have permitted to substantially extend the resolved resonance region, but suffered in the near-thermal energy range from the unfavorable signal-to-background ratio resulting from the combination of the high radioactivity of 241Am and the rather low thermal neutron flux. The here presented 241Am(n,γ) measurement, performed with C6D6 liquid scintillator gamma detectors at the 20 m flight-path station EAR2 of the n_TOF facility, took advantage of the much higher neutron flux. The current status of the analysis of the data, focussed on the low-energy region, will be described here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Neutron capture cross section measurements have been performed at the time-of-flight facility GELINA of the EC-JRC-Geel. Prompt gamma rays, originating from a natural silver sample, were detected by a pair of C6D6 liquid scintillation detectors. The total energy detection principle in combination with the pulse height weighting technique has been used. In this contribution the experimental details together with the data reduction process are described. In addition, first results of calculations with REFIT are presented to verify the quality of recommended cross section data in the resolved resonance region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new measurement program was set up at SCK·CEN to determine the thermal neutron-induced fission cross section of a number of Cm isotopes. Abstract

A sensitivity and uncertainty analysis was carried out to estimate the uncertainty in the neutron multiplication factor k eff and to identify the most important nuclear data for neutron induced reactions for criticality calculations of the latest MYRRHA designs. Sensitivity profiles, i.e. sensitivity to the nuclear data as a function of incoming neutron energy, were derived for both a critical and sub-critical core. They were calculated using codes that are based on different methodologies including stochastic and deterministic calculations (i.e. SCALE, MCNP and XSUN). The neutron induced nuclear data sensitivity analysis outlined the following quantities to be of special importance for the MYRRHA reactor concept: 239 Pu(n,γ) both in resonance and fast energy region, (n,f) fast, χ and ν fast; 238 U(n,n′) fast, (n,γ) resonance and fast, (n,n) resonance and fast; 240 Pu ν fast; 238 Pu(n,f) both resonance and fast; 56 Fe(n,γ) both resonance and fast. Differences of less than 4% between codes were obtained for these quantities, with few exceptions ( 238 Pu(n,f), 238 U(n,n) and 56 Fe(n,γ) reactions). Nuclear data covariance matrices of different libraries (SCALE-6, COMMARA-2 and JENDL-4.0m) were used to derive the uncertainty in k eff based on the calculated sensitivities. This study reveals that the largest contributions to k eff uncertainty result from the uncertainty in the average prompt neutron fission multiplicity of 239 Pu, in the 238 U inelastic scattering cross section and 239 Pu fission cross section, using the covariances from SCALE-6, COMMARA-2 and JENDL-4.0m, respectively. Abstract

The importance of improving the accuracy on the capture cross-section of 238U has been addressed by the Nuclear Energy Agency, since its uncertainty significantly affects the uncertainties of key design parameters for both fast and thermal nuclear reactors. Within the 7th framework programme ANDES of the European Commission three different measurements have been carried out with the aim of providing the 238U(n,γ) cross-section with an accuracy which varies from 1 to 5%, depending on the energy range. Hereby the final results of the measurement performed at the n-TOF CERN facility in a wide energy range from 1 eV to 700 keV will be presented. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.
