Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The prompt component at intermediate velocity of light charged particles is investigated. An improved coalescence model coupled to the intra-nuclear cascade code ISABEL is used to obtain light complex particle energy spectra and multiplicities as a function of impact parameter. The results are compared with experimental data from the 36Ar + 58Ni experiment at 95 MeV/nucleon, performed with the INDRA 4π detection system. The calculated prompt component is found to rather well reproduce proton spectra. For complex light charged particles the calculated components well populate the high energy part of spectra. Prompt emission can therefore explain the large transverse energies experimentally observed at mid-rapidity.

Abstract

Sideward flow values have been determined with the INDRA multidetector for Ar+Ni, Ni+Ni and Xe+Sn systems studied at GANIL in the 30 to 100 A.MeV incident energy range. The balance energies found for Ar+Ni and Ni+Ni systems are in agreement with previous experimental results and theoretical calculations. Negative sideward flow values have been measured. The possible origins of such negative values are discussed. They could result from a more important contribution of evaporated particles with respect to the contribution of promptly emitted particles at mid-rapidity. But effects induced by the methods used to reconstruct the reaction plane cannot be totally excluded. Complete tests of these methods are presented and the origins of the ``auto-correlation'' effect have been traced back. For heavy fragments, the observed negative flow values seem to be mainly due to the reaction plane reconstruction methods. For light charged particles, these negative values could result from the dynamics of the collisions and from the reaction plane reconstruction methods as well. Abstract

The light output of the 324 CsI(Tl) scintillators of INDRA has been measured over a large range both in energy: 1 - 80 AMeV and in atomic number of incident ions: Z = 1 - 60. An analytical expression for the nonlinear total light response as a function of the energy and the identity of the ion is proposed. It depends on four parameters. For three of them, connected to CsI(Tl) intrinsic characteristics, recommended fixed values are proposed. They are issued from the comparative study of the forward scintillators of INDRA, based on intermediate mass fragment data. The fourth one, related to light collection and to the gain of the associated photomultiplier, is particular and may be accurately obtained afterwards, from light charged particle data. Two applications are presented: fragment identification in telescopes using a CsI(Tl) crystal as residual energy detector and the scintillator energy calibration. Abstract

Intermediate velocity products in Ar+Ni collisions from 52 to 95 A.MeV are studied in an experiment performed at the GANIL facility with the 4$\pi$ multidetector INDRA. It is shown that these emissions cannot be explained by statistical decays of the quasi-projectile and the quasi-target in complete equilibrium. Three methods are used to isolate and characterize intermediate velocity products. The total mass of these products increases with the violence of the collision and reaches a large fraction of the system mass in mid-central collisions. This mass is found independent of the incident energy, but strongly dependent on the geometry of the collision. Finally it is shown that the kinematical characteristics of intermediate velocity products are weakly dependent on the experimental impact parameter, but strongly dependent on the incident energy. Abstract

The atomic nucleus has often been compared to a fluid and its ground state properties have been explained in terms of a liquid drop. When moderatly heated, by means of a nuclear collision, the excess energy is removed by evaporation[1] of, usually, light particles (neutrons and LCP : protons, deuterons, tritons, 3 He and 4 He) or by fission. Violent heavy ion collisions have been seen to heat this nuclear matter up to a point where it vaporizes into LCPs. It is therefore suggested that nuclear matter behaves like a fluid with two limiting states : a liquid and a gas phase. This suggestion raises several questions : How can one define a phase for a system with such a limited number of constituents ? Are these phases equilibrated thermodynamically ? Can one define a phase transition, a critical point, a coexistence line... ?

Abstract

The influence of the entrance channel asymmetry upon the fragmentation process is addressed by studying heavy-ion induced reactions around the Fermi energy. The data have been recorded with the INDRA 4pi array. An event selection method called the Principal Component Analysis is presented and discussed. It is applied for the selection of central events and furthermore to multifragmentation of single source events. The selected subsets of data are compared to the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) to check the equilibrium hypothesis and get the source characteristics. Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The second generation of high-quality detection arrays gave hope to nuclear physicists to finally obtain an experimental equation of state of nuclear matter. In spite of this progress, the measurement of the internal energy of a hot nucleus remains a very difficult task. This paper illustrates this difficulty by a methodological study of a classical technique of excitation energy measurement used in the Fermi energy range. The aim of this study is to verify the validity, the accuracy and the experimental limits of these measurements. It is shown that it is difficult to have a real experimental mastery of the source reconstruction and calorimetry at least for limited bombarding energies and violent collisions.

A simple formalism describing the light response of CsI(Tl) to heavy ions, which quantifies the luminescence and the quenching in terms of the competition between radiative transitions following the carrier trapping at the Tl activator sites and the electron-hole recombination, is proposed. The effect of the delta rays on the scintillation efficiency is for the first time quantitatively included in a fully consistent way. Abstract

Intermediate velocity emissions of light charged particles are studied for the Ar+Ni system at $95A \mathrm{MeV}.$ Experimental parallel velocity and transverse energy distributions are compared to those of a calculation based on intranuclear cascades followed by percolation and evaporation steps. The trends of the distributions are very similar, confirming the importance of prompt emissions in the experimental data.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The excitation energy and angular momentum transferred to quasiprojectiles have been measured in the 129Xe+natSn collisions at bombarding energies between 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The excitation energy of quasiprojectiles has been determined from the kinetic energy of all decay products (calorimetry). It increases with the violence of the collision, approaching 10 MeV/nucleon in the most dissipative ones. The angular momentum has been deduced from the kinetic energies and angular distributions of the emitted light charged particles (p, d, t, 3He and α). The (apparent) spin value decreases with the violence of the collision. Larger spin values are observed at the lowest bombarding energy. Data are compared with the predictions of dynamical and statistical models. They reproduce the data in a quantitative way indicating that large spin values are transferred to quasiprojectiles during the interaction. The results show that the one-body dissipation formalism still applies at intermediate bombarding energies and low-energy dissipations. With the increase of the energy, the data seem to be better described when the two-body interaction is accounted for.

Abstract

The properties of fragments and light charged particles emitted in multifragmentation of single sources formed in central 36AMeV Gd+U collisions are reviewed. Most of the products are isotropically distributed in the reaction c.m. Fragment kinetic energies reveal the onset of radial collective energy. A bulk effect is experimentally evidenced from the similarity of the charge distribution with that from the lighter 32AMeV Xe+Sn system. Spinodal decomposition of finite nuclear matter exhibits the same property in simulated central collisions for the two systems, and appears therefore as a possible mechanism at the origin of multifragmentation in this incident energy domain., Comment: 28 pages including 14 figures; submitted to Nucl. Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The quasi-projectile (QP) properties are investigated in the Ar+Ni collisions at 95 A.MeV taking into account the intermediate velocity emission. Indeed, in this reaction, between 52 and 95 A.MeV bombarding energies, the number of particles emitted in the intermediate velocity region is related to the overlap volume between projectile and target. Mean transverse energies of these particles are found particularly high. In this context, the mass of the QP decreases linearly with the impact parameter from peripheral to central collisions whereas its excitation energy increases up to 8 A.MeV. These results are compared to previous analyses assuming a pure binary scenario.

Abstract

Vaporized sources produced in collisions between 36Ar and 58Ni at 95 MeV per nucleon have been detected with the multidetector INDRA. Complete information concerning the deexcitation properties of quasi-projectiles, including second moments of chemical composition, is compared to a quantum statistical model describing a gas of fermions and bosons in thermal and chemical equilibrium. Inclusions in the calculation of all known discrete levels of nuclear species which deexcite into light particles and of a final state excluded volume interaction are found decisive to very well reproduce the experimental data, which strongly supports that thermodynamical equilibrium was achieved at freeze-out for such sources.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire, GANIL E209, GANIL E210; International audience; Recent experimental results concerning heavy systems (Pb + Au, Pb + Ag, Pb + Al, Gd + C, Gd + U, Xe + Sn, ...) obtained at GANIL with the INDRA and NAUTILUS 4$\pi arrays will be presented. The study of reaction mechanisms has shown the dominant binary and highly dissipative character of the process. The two heavy and excited fragments produced after the first stage of the interaction can decay into various decay modes from evaporation to multifragmentation including fission. However, deviations from this simple picture have been found by analyzing angular and velocity distributions of light charged particles, and fragments. Indeed, there is a certain amount of matter in excess emitted between the two primary sources suggesting either the existence of a mid-rapidity source similar to the one observed in the relativistic regime (participants) or a strong deformation induced by the dynamics of the collision (neck instability). This last possibility has been suggested by analyzing in detail the angular distributions of the fragments. More precisely, we observe an isotropic component which is compatible with the prediction of statistical models and a second one corresponding to breakup aligned with the recoil direction of the projectile like source which should be compared with the predictions of dynamical calculations based on microscopic transport models.

Abstract

Charged product multiplicities and Z distributions were measured for single multifragmenting sources produced in collisions between 129 Xe + nat Sn and 155 Gd + 238 U at the same available energy per nucleon. Z distributions are found identical for both reactions while fragment multiplicities scale as the charge of the total systems. A complete dynamical simulation, in which multifragmentation originates in the spinodal decomposition of a finite piece of nuclear matter resulting from an incomplete fusion of projectile and target, well accounts for this experimental observation.

Abstract

For 50 MeV/nucleon {sup 129}Xe+{sup nat}Sn multifragmentation events, we deduced, by means of correlation techniques, the multiplicities of the hydrogen and helium isotopes which were emitted by the hot primary excited fragments produced at the stage of the disassembly of an equilibrated hot source. We also derived the relative kinetic energy distributions between the primary clusters and the light charged particles that they evaporate. From the comparison between the secondary multiplicities observed experimentally and the multiplicities predicted by the GEMINI model, we concluded that the source breaks into primary fragments which are characterized by the same N/Z ratio as the combined system. Knowing the secondary light charged particle multiplicities and kinetic energies, we reconstructed the average charges of the hot fragments and we estimated their mean excitation energies. The fragment excitation energies are equal to 3.0 MeV/nucleon for the full range of intermediate mass fragment atomic number. This global constancy indicates that, on the average, thermodynamical equilibrium was achieved at the disassembly stage of the source. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract

Thermal scaling (Arrhenius law for an “elementary” probability p of binomial function) and reducibility in intermediate mass fragments (IMF's) production are examined for data of the reaction 129Xe+ natSn at 50 MeV/u. The study of the longitudinal velocities and of the average transverse energies of the IMF's contradicts the assumption that the total transverse energy of all detected particles Et is related to a well defined temperature. The separation of Et into the total transverse energy of light charged particles (Z=1,2) and that of IMF's elucidates the algorithm which induces a linear behavior of log(1/p) versus 1/ E t . Even in the case of a single thermalized source, calculations based on a sequential statistical model show that the Arrhenius law cannot be observed if Et is taken as an estimation of the thermal energy.

Abstract

The dependence of nuclear temperature upon excitation energy has been experimentally studied with increasing values of excitation energy over the years. At excitation energies per nucleon, E*/A, lower than 6 MeV the temperatures deduced from the kinetic properties of the emitted particles and clusters follow the Fermi gas law : E* = (A/k).T 2. The value of the inverse level density parameter k was found to be in the range 8 to 13[1]. When excitation energies up to 10 MeV per nucleon were reached, temperatures obtained from the relative populations of excited levels in the emitted light nuclei did not overcome 5–6 MeV[2], but this limitation could be explained by side-feeding effects. Such hot nuclei were formed in fusion or deep inelastic reactions. At incident energies above 40–50 MeV/u, binary dissipative collisions dominate and the quasi-projectiles reach excitation energies per nuclEon and kinetic temperatures above 10 MeV[4, 5]. The study of projectile “spectators” in reactions at several hundreds of MeV/u made it possible to reach similar excitation energies[3]. In this Aladin experiment at GSI, the temperature was obtained via the relative abundances of two isotope pairs[6]. The relation between this temperature Tr 0 and E*/A was interpreted as indicating a phase transition, with the nuclear gas regime dominating above E*/A = 10 MeV, as predicted[7]. However, a monotonic increase of the temperature with excitation energy was observed in similar conditions[8] and questions were raised about the significance of these caloric curves[9, 10, 11, 12], about the role played by the mass dependence of the decaying nucleus upon E*/A [13], as well as the strong effects of side-feeding, especially at high temperatures [14]. Abstract

Experimental data obtained with the $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ multidetector system INDRA are used to study midvelocity emissions of light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments for peripheral and semicentral collisions of Xe and Sn at energies between 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The analysis is performed as a function of incident energy and of impact parameter, defined through the total transverse energy of LCP. The onset of midvelocity emissions is found to be close to 25 MeV/nucleon. Evaporative processes are also identified and are found to be sensitive to the impact parameter but show, for a given impact parameter, little dependence on the incident energy. A chemical analysis of the midvelocity component is performed. Compared to the evaporative process, midvelocity matter is found to be more neutron rich. Results are compared with the predictions of a dynamical model (CHIMERA). The general trends are well reproduced but some interesting differences are observed, notably in the amount of relative energy dissipation, showing that midvelocity emissions could be sensitive to the finer details of the interaction.

Abstract

International audience; A bulk effect in multifragmentation of very heavy fused systems has been experimentally evidenced. Such an effect is very well reproduced by a complete dynamical simulation of collisions in which multifragmentation occurs through the growth of density fluctuations in the unstable spinodal region of the phase diagram of nuclear matter.
