Abstract

The European physical journal / C 75(7), 304 (2015). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-015-3480-z, HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders. Abstract

The parton momentum density distributions in the proton are determined from a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of structure functions measured at HERA and by fixed target experiments. Also included are data on the difference of the up and down anti-quark distributions. The uncertainties in the parton densities, structure functions and related cross sections are estimated from the experimental errors and those on the input parameters of the fit. Several QCD predictions obtained from this analysis are calculated and compared to data. Abstract

Elastic and proton-dissociative $\rho^0$ photoproduction ( $\gamma p \rightarrow \rho^0 p$ , $\gamma p \rightarrow \rho^0 N$ , respectively, with $\rho^0 \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ ) has been studied in $ep$ interactions at HERA for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range $50 < W < 100$ GeV and for $|t| < 0.5$ GeV $^2$ , where $t$ is the square of the four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex; the results on the proton-dissociative reaction are presented for masses of the dissociated proton system in the range $M_N^2 < 0.1 W^2$ . For the elastic process, the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectrum has been investigated as a function of $t$ . As in fixed target experiments, the $\rho^0$ resonance shape is asymmetric; this asymmetry decreases with increasing $|t|$ , as expected in models in which the asymmetry is ascribed to the interference of resonant and non-resonant $\pi^+\pi^-$ production. The cross section has been studied as a function of $W$ ; a fit to the resonant part with the form $W^a$ gives $a=0.16\pm 0.06 \mbox{(stat.)} ^{+0.11}_{-0.15} \mbox{(syst.)}$ . The resonant part of the $\gamma p \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^- p$ cross section is $11.2\pm 0.1 \mbox{(stat.)} ^{+1.1}_{-1.2} \mbox{(syst.)}$ $\mu$ b at $\langle W\rangle=71.7$ GeV. The $t$ dependence of the cross section can be described by a function of the type $A_{\rho} \exp{(-b_{\rho} |t| + c_{\rho} t^2)}$ with $b_{\rho}= 10.9 \pm 0.3$ (stat.) $^{+1.0}_{-0.5}$ (syst.) GeV $^{-2}$ and $c_{\rho}= 2.7 \pm 0.9$ (stat.) $^{+1.9}_{-1.7}$ (syst.) GeV $^{-4}$ . The $t$ dependence has also been studied as a function of $W$ and a value of the slope of the pomeron trajectory $\alpha_{\mathbb{P}}^{\prime}= 0.23 \pm 0.15 \mbox{(stat.)} ^{+0.10}_{-0.07} \mbox{(syst.)}$ GeV $^{-2}$ has been deduced. The $\rho^0$ spin density matrix elements $r^{04}_{00}$ , $r^{04}_{1-1}$ and ${\frak R}{e[r^{04}_{10}]}$ have been measured and found to be consistent with expectations based on $s$ -channel helicity conservation. For proton-dissociative $\pi^+\pi^-$ photoproduction in the $\rho^0$ mass range, the distributions of the two-pion invariant mass, $W$ and the polar and azimuthal angles of the pions in the helicity frame are the same within errors as those for the elastic process. The $t$ distribution has been fitted to an exponential function with a slope parameter $5.8 \pm 0.3 \mbox{(stat.)} \pm 0.5 \mbox{(syst.)}$ GeV $^{-2}$ . The ratio of the elastic to proton-dissociative $\rho^0$ photoproduction cross section is $2.0 \pm 0.2 \mbox{(stat.)} \pm 0.7 \mbox{(syst.)}$ .

Abstract

Photon diffractive dissociation, \(\gamma p \rightarrow Xp\), has been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using \(ep\) interactions where the virtuality \(Q^2\) of the exchanged photon is smaller than 0.02 GeV\(^2\). The squared four-momentum \(t\) exchanged at the proton vertex was determined in the range \(0.073< |t| < 0.40\) GeV\(^2\) by measuring the scattered proton in the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer. In the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval \(176 < W < 225\) GeV and for masses of the dissociated photon system \(4 < M_X < 32\) GeV, the \(t\) distribution has an exponential shape, \(dN/d|t| \propto \exp{(-b|t|)}\), with a slope parameter \(b=6.8 \pm 0.9\) (stat.)\(^{+1.2}_{-1.1}\) (syst.) GeV\(^{-2}\).

Abstract

The QCDNUM program numerically solves the evolution equations for parton densities and fragmentation functions in perturbative QCD. Un-polarised parton densities can be evolved up to next-to-next-to-leading order in powers of the strong coupling constant, while polarised densities or fragmentation functions can be evolved up to next-to-leading order. Other types of evolution can be accessed by feeding alternative sets of evolution kernels into the program. A versatile convolution engine provides tools to compute parton luminosities, cross-sections in hadron-hadron scattering, and deep inelastic structure functions in the zero-mass scheme or in generalised mass schemes. Input to these calculations are either the QCDNUM evolved densities, or those read in from an external parton density repository. Included in the software distribution are packages to calculate zero-mass structure functions in un-polarised deep inelastic scattering, and heavy flavour contributions to these structure functions in the fixed flavour number scheme., 74 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

Events containing an isolated prompt photon with high transverse energy, together with a balancing jet, have been observed for the first time in photoproduction at HERA.The data were taken with the ZEUS detector, in a $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy range 120--250 GeV. The fraction of the incoming photon energy participating in the production of the prompt photon and the jet, $x_\gamma$, shows a strong peak near unity, consistent with LO QCD Monte Carlo predictions. In the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range $5\le \eTg < 10$ GeV, $-0.7 \le \eta^\gamma < 0.8$, $\eTj\ge 5$ GeV, and $-1.5\le \eta^{jet}\le 1.8$, with $\xgO > 0.8,$ the measured cross section is $15.3 \pm 3.8 \pm 1.8 pb$, in good agreement with a recent NLO calculation., Comment: 22 pages including 8 figures

Abstract

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb-1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range -1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - φ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130-270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval -3 < ηjet(γρ CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10-2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and ETjet distributions.

Abstract

This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

Abstract

This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel $D^{*+}\to (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+) \pi^+ $ (+ c.c.) has been used in the study. Abstract

The photoproduction reaction γp → μ+ μ-p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 43.2pb-1. The Υ meson has been observed in photoproduction for the first time. The sum of the products of the elastic Υ(1S), Υ(2S),Υ(3S) photoproduction cross sections with their respective branching ratios is determined to be 13.3 ± 6.0(stat.)-2.3+2.7(syst.) pb at a mean photon-proton centre of mass energy of 120 GeV. The cross section is above the prediction of a perturbative QCD model. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
