Abstract

Thies et al.; 9 pags., 7 figs., 1 tab., Background: Models describing nuclear fragmentation and fragmentation fission deliver important input for planning nuclear physics experiments and future radioactive ion beam facilities. These models are usually benchmarked against data from stable beam experiments. In the future, two-step fragmentation reactions with exotic nuclei as stepping stones are a promising tool for reaching the most neutron-rich nuclei, creating a need for models to describe also these reactions. Purpose: We want to extend the presently available data on fragmentation reactions towards the light exotic region on the nuclear chart. Furthermore, we want to improve the understanding of projectile fragmentation especially for unstable isotopes. Method: We have measured projectile fragments from C10,12-18 and B10-15 isotopes colliding with a carbon target. These measurements were all performed within one experiment, which gives rise to a very consistent data set. We compare our data to model calculations. Results: One-proton removal cross sections with different final neutron numbers (1pxn) for relativistic C10,12-18 and B10-15 isotopes impinging on a carbon target. Comparing model calculations to the data, we find that the epax code is not able to describe the data satisfactorily. Using abrabla07 on the other hand, we find that the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon needs to be decreased from 27 MeV to 8.1 MeV. With that decrease abrabla07 describes the data surprisingly well. Conclusions: Extending the available data towards light unstable nuclei with a consistent set of new data has allowed a systematic investigation of the role of the excitation energy induced in projectile fragmentation. Most striking is the apparent mass dependence of the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon. Nevertheless, this parameter, which has been related to final-state interactions, requires further study. ©2016 American Physical Society, We thank the FRS and the GSI accelerator staff for their efforts. 6 pags., 5 figs. -- XII International Symposium on Nuclei in the Cosmos, August 5-12, 2012, Cairns, Australia, By the Coulomb breakup of 17Ne, the time-reversed reaction 15O(2p, γ) 17Ne has been studied. This reaction might play an important role in the rp process, as a break-out reaction of the hot CNO cycle. The secondary 17Ne ion beam with an energy of 500 MeV/nucleon has been dissociated in a Pb target. The reaction products have been detected with the LAND-R3B experimental setup at GSI. The preliminary differential and integral Coulomb dissociation cross section σCoul has been determined, which then will be converted into a photo-absorption cross section σphoto, and a two-proton radiative capture cross section σcap. Additionally, information about the structure of the 17Ne, a potential two-proton halo nucleus, will be received. Abstract

Electromagnetic and nuclear inelastic scattering of the halo nucleus sup 1 sup 1 Be have been investigated by a measurement of the one-neutron removal channel, utilizing a secondary sup 1 sup 1 Be beam with an energy of 520 MeV/nucleon impinging on lead and carbon targets. All decay products, i.e. sup 1 sup 0 Be fragments, neutrons, and gamma-rays have been detected in coincidence. Partial cross sections for the population of ground and excited states in sup 1 sup 0 Be were determined for nuclear diffractive breakup as well as for electromagnetically induced breakup. The partial cross sections for ground-state transitions have been differentiated further with respect to excitation energy, and the dipole-strength function associated solely with transitions of the halo 2s sub 1 sub / sub 2 neutron to the continuum has been derived. The extracted dipole strength integrated from the neutron threshold up to 6.1 MeV excitation energy amounts to 0.90(6) e sup 2 fm sup 2. A spectroscopic factor for the nu 2s sub 1 sub / sub 2 x sup 1 sup 0 Be(0 sup +) single-particle configuration of 0.61(5) and a root-mean-square radius of the 2s sub 1 sub / sub 2 neutron wave function of 5.7(4) fm have been deduced.

Abstract

Fission is an extremely complex mechanism that requires a dynamical approach to describe the evolution of the process in terms of intrinsic and collective excitations of the nuclear constituents. In order to determine these effects a complex experimental setup was mounted at GSI, which allowed us for the first time the full identification in charge and mass of all fission fragments thanks to a magnetic separation and the use of the inverse kinematic technique. Moreover, we also measured the neutron multiplicities and the light-charged particles emitted in coincidence with fission. These complete kinematic measurements will be used to define sensitive observables to dissipative and transient effects in fission. Abstract

We performed an experiment dedicated to the accurate isotopic yield measurement of fission fragments over the whole range. SOFIA exploits the inverse kinematics technique: using heavy ion beams at relativistic energies, fission is induced by Coulomb excitation in a high-Z target. Abstract

Advanced nuclear structure models predict the presence of the shell closures N = 14, 16 in neutron-rich O isotopes rather than N = 20. Spectroscopic investigations performed at the neutron drip line have recently confirmed such predictions showing that the 24O is a doubly magic nucleus (Z = 8, N = 16). Predictions within the shell model calculation for the 23,24O ground state have been confirmed measuring their spectroscopic factors. Abstract

Dipole strength distributions were determined for the neutron-rich nuclei 129–132Sn and 133,134Sb from electromagnetic excitation in an experiment using the FRS-LAND setup. For all nuclei, a sizeable fraction of “pygmy” dipole strength at excitation energies well below the giant dipole resonance was observed. The integrated low-lying dipole strength of the nuclei with low neutron separation energies can be compared to results for stable nuclei (e.g. N = 82 isotopes) determined for the energy regime of 5–9 MeV. A clear increase of the dipole strength with increasing asymmetry of the nuclei is observed. Comparing the ratio of the low-lying dipole over the giant dipole strength to recent relativistic mean field calculations, values for the parameters a4 and p0 of the symmetry energy and for the neutron skin thickness are derived. Averaged over 130Sn and 132Sn we extract ā4 = 31.8±1.3 MeV and p0 = 2.2±0.5 MeV/fm3. The neutron skin sizes are determined to Rn-Rp = 0.23±0.03 fm and 0.24±0.03 fm for 130Sn and 132Sn, respectively. For 208Pb a neutron skin thickness of Rn-Rp = 0.18±0.035 fm follows, when applying the same method and using earlier published experimental findings on the dipole strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The two-proton radioactivity of the previously unknown 19Mg ground-state is observed by tracking the decay products in-flight. The trajectories of the 2p-decay products, 17Ne+p+p, have been measured by using tracking micro-strip detectors which allowed to reconstruct the 2p-decay vertices and fragment correlations. The half-life of 19Mg deduced from the measured vertex distribution is 4.0(15) ps in the system of 19Mg. The Q-value of the 2p-decay of the 19Mg ground-state inferred from the measured p-p-17Ne correlations is 0.75(5) MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The ground state structure of the near drip-line 23O nucleus and neutron-rich 17,21O isotopes has been investigated at GSI via exclusive measurements of one-neutron Coulomb breakup reactions with a Pb target using secondary beams of the corresponding projectiles at 400–600 MeV/u. Differential cross sections for electromagnetic dissociation have been measured and compared with the calculated ones in a direct breakup model. Abstract

Neutron-rich lead and bismuth isotopes have been produced by cold-fragmentation reactions induced by 238U projectiles at 1A GeV impinging on a beryllium target. The high-resolving power FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI allowed us to identify and determine the production cross-sections of 43 nuclei, nine of them for the first time ( 216, 217, 218, 219Pb and 219, 220, 221, 222, 223Bi . Abstract

Dipole strength distributions measured in unstable neutron-rich nuclei in the 132Sn mass region by utilizing relativistic Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams reveal a sizable fraction of "pygmy" strength below the giant dipole resonance. On the grounds of the RQRPA model, a strong linear correlation between the pygmy strength, parameters of the nuclear symmetry energy and the neutron skin thickness has been found. From the experimentally observed low-lying strength, the symmetry energy pressure p0 = 2.3 ± 0.8 MeV/fm³ and neutron skin thicknesses of 0.23 ± 0.04 fm in 130Sn and 0.24 ± 0.04 fm in 132Sn have been extracted. Abstract

Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope 23O. The 22O fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from 23O at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with de-exciting γ rays, allowing to discern between 22O ground-state and excited-states contributions. From the comparison of exclusive experimental momentum distributions for the one-neutron removal channel to theoretical momentum distributions calculated in an Eikonal model for the knockout process, and spin and parity assignment of Iπ = 1/2+ was deduced for the 23O ground state. Abstract

One-proton removal reactions of 936 MeV/u 8B have been studied with carbon and lead as breakup targets. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the 7Be fragments and the one-proton removal cross section of 8B were measured. The relative contributions of the breakup channels leading to 7Be in its ground state and excited state at 429 keV (7Be&ast;) have been determined from measurements of γ rays in coincidence with the fragments from the one-proton removal reaction. The experimental breakup data are discussed in the context of a theoretical (α+3He+p) three-body model. The combined data from the two targets allow a determination of the weight of the 7Be&ast; component in the 8B ground state wave function as (13.3±2.2%) [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Using the very precise value of the baryonic density of the Universe recently obtained by WMAP, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis calculations predict a primordial 7Li abundance which is a factor 2 – 3 higher than that observed in galactic halo dwarf stars. Up to now, the role of the 7Be(d,p)2α reaction has been neglected. We have studied this reaction, for the first time at energies appropriate to the Big Bang environment, at the CYCLONE facility at Louvain-la-Neuve using a radioactive 7Be beam. Abstract

A new method to determine compound nuclear lifetimes at high excitation energies is proposed and applied to the system C-12(Si-28, alpha)Ar-36 at two different bombarding energies, 190 and 277 MeV. The alpha particle spectra show a structure which directly reflects the fluctuating behavior of the first de-excitation step. Coherence widths and thus lifetimes for the nucleus Ar-36 were obtained via a correlation function analysis. The results at low excitation energies are consistent with standard statistical models while the result at high excitation energy is compatible with a theoretically predicted change of the level density parameter. Abstract

Absolute differential cross-sections for elastic p6He and p8He scattering were measured in inverse kinematics with secondary beams. In order to supplement data taken for small-angle scattering, differential cross-sections for higher momentum transfer were measured using liquid hydrogen target. Both data sets were analyzed together. They have permitted to deduce the radial shape of the nuclear matter distributions and the root-mean-square radii with the help of Glauber theory. In addition to a phenomenological analysis, used already in the previous work, a model-independent analysis with a help of a Sum-Of-Gaussians (SOG) method has been performed. Abstract

In the R 3 B experiment at FAIR, charged particles with energies up to 600 MeV and forward boosted γ -rays with energies up to 20 MeV need to be detected in scattering experiments. Calorimeters for nuclear physics experiments of this kind, using relativistic radioactive ion beams, require high energy resolution and high efficiency for simultaneous detection of strongly Doppler shifted γ -rays and high-energy charged particles. A calorimeter design that can meet these requirements, using CsI(Tl) scintillators, results in detector elements that may exhibit light output variations with crystal depth, which can limit the attainable resolution. In this paper we present results from a systematic study of 478 detector modules of CALIFA, the R 3 B calorimeter, in order to determine and minimize such variations. To facilitate further systematic studies we also present results for the total absorption length of the scintillation light, using spectrophotometry, light crosstalk between adjacent detector modules, and surface topography of the CsI(Tl) crystals from atomic force microscopy. Abstract: One-neutron knockout reactions from Borromean nuclei are analyzed using a profile function analysis technique. The profile function, which is derived as the square root of the variance of the measured fragment + neutron momenta as a function of their relative energy, is shown to be very sensitive to the angular momentum of the knocked out neutron. Three cases are studied here: 7He, where the profile function analysis shows a presence of component in the 8He ground-state wave-function, 10Li, where the presence of a 11(2)% d-wave contribution to the relative energy spectrum above 1.5 MeV is found and, finally, the presence of a major s contribution around 0.5 MeV relative energy in the 13Be case and that the observed decay to the 12Be state originates in a d state in 13Be. Abstract: With recent improvements in the production of radioactive beams in facilities such as SPIRAL at GANIL, a larger area of the nuclear chart is now accessible for experimentation. For these usually low-intensity and low-energy secondary beams, we have developed the new MAYA detector based on the active-target concept. This device allows to use a relatively thick target without loss of resolution by using the detection gas as target material. Abstract

This paper presents the results of experimental investigations of (p,pn), (p,pα) and (p,p 6He) reactions with relativistic 6He and 8He beams impinging on a hydrogen target. Information on the structure of extremely neutron-rich nuclei was obtained by using the unique characteristic of quasi-free scattering processes and inverse kinematics. For the first time, momentum distributions of complex clusters inside 6He and 8He were measured. Spectroscopic factors for valence neutrons, α- and 6He clusters were deduced from the experimental data. They demonstrate that the filling of the p½ shell is the essential feature of the 8He structure. It is shown that the 8He cluster structure can be considered as a 6He core plus two valence neutrons. Abstract: The ground-state structure of the near-drip-line nucleus 23O has been investigated in a one-neutron Coulomb breakup reaction. Differential cross sections for electromagnetic excitation of 23O projectiles (422 MeV/nucleon) incident on a lead target have been obtained from the measurement of the momenta of all breakup products including γ rays. The analysis of the deduced dipole-transition probability into the continuum infers a ground state configuration with a spectroscopic factor of 0.77(10) and thus a ground-state spin , resolving earlier conflicting experimental findings. Final-state interaction is of significant influence, an effective reduced scattering length for low-energy neutron scattering could be derived from the data. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The GSI projectile fragment separator FRS has demonstrated with many pioneering experiments the research potential of in-flight separators at relativistic energies. Although the present facility has contributed much to the progress in the field of nuclear structure physics, major improvements are desirable in the future. The characteristics of the proposed next-generation facility at GSI, the Super-FRS, will be presented and compared to other projects. The Super-FRS is a large-acceptance superconducting fragment separator followed by different experimental branches including a combination with a new storage-cooler ring system. This system consists of a collector ring (CR) and a new experimental storage ring (NESR) which allow precision mass and lifetime measurements as well as in-ring reaction studies. The NESR can be operated in combination with an electron ring to measure electron scattering with exotic nuclei.
