Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay is a hypothetical rare nuclear transition ($T_{1/2}>10^{26}$ y). Its observation would provide an important insight about the nature of neutrinos (Dirac or Majorana particle) demonstrating that the lepton number is not conserved. This decay can be investigated with bolometers embedding the double beta decay isotope ($^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{116}$Cd, $^{130}$Te...), which perform as low temperature calorimeters (10 mK) detecting particle interactions via a small temperature rise read out by a dedicated thermometer. CROSS (Cryogenic Rare-event Observatory with Surface Sensitivity) aims at the development of bolometric detectors (Li$_{2}$MoO$_{4}$ and TeO$_{2}$) capable of discriminating surface $\alpha$ and $\beta$ interactions by exploiting superconducting properties of Al film deposited on the crystal surface. We report in this paper the results of tests on prototypes performed at CSNSM (Orsay, France) that showed the capability of a-few-$\mu$m-thick superconducting Al film deposited on crystal surface to discriminate surface $\alpha$ from bulk events, thus providing the detector with the required surface sensitivity capability. The CROSS technology would further improve the background suppression and simplify the detector construction with a view to future competitive double beta decay searches., Comment: Accepted for publication in J. Abstract: The double-electron capture and the electron capture with positron emission in 168Yb have been investigated for the first time at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Italy) measuring 371 g of highly purified ytterbium oxide placed on the end-cap of a 465 cm3 ultra-low-background high purity Germanium detector (HPGe). No gamma associated to double beta processes in 168Yb have been observed after 2074 h of data taking. This has allowed setting the half-life limits on the level of lim ⁡ T 1 / 2 ∼ 10 14 – 10 18 yr at 90% C.L. Particularly, a lower half-life limit on a possible resonant neutrinoless double-electron capture in 168Yb to the ( 2 ) − 1403.7 keV excited state of 168Er is set as T 1 / 2 ≥ 1.9 × 10 18 yr at 90% C.L. Half-life limits T 1 / 2 2 ν ( 0 ν ) ≥ 4.5 ( 4.3 ) × 10 16 yr were set on the 2 ν ( 0 ν ) 2 β − decay of 176Yb to the 2 + 84.3 keV first excited level of 176Hf.

Abstract: Double-beta processes in $^{184}$Os and $^{192}$Os were searched for over 15851 h at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. by using a 118 g ultra-pure osmium sample installed on the endcap of a 112 cm$^3$ ultra-low-background broad-energy germanium detector. New limits on double-electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in $^{184}$Os were set at the level of $\lim T_{1/2} \sim 10^{16}-10^{17}$ yr. In particular the $2\nu$2K and $2\nu$KL decays of $^{184}$Os to the ground state of $^{184}$W are restricted as $T_{1/2}\geq3.0\times 10^{16}$ yr and $T_{1/2}\geq2.0\times 10^{16}$ yr, respectively. A lower limit on the half-life for the double-beta decay of $^{192}$Os to the first excited level of $^{192}$Pt was set as $\lim T_{1/2}=2.0\times 10^{20}$ yr at 90\% C.L., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

Abstract: This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ( $$\sim 1~\hbox {kg}$$ ∼ 1 kg ), high optical quality, radiopure $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2–0.4 kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the Q-value of the double-beta transition of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo (3034 keV) is 4–6 keV FWHM. The rejection of the $$\alpha $$ α -induced dominant background above 2.6 MeV is better than $$8\sigma $$ 8 σ . Less than $$10~\upmu \hbox {Bq/kg}$$ 10 μ Bq/kg activity of $$^{232}\hbox {Th}\, (^{228}\hbox {Th})$$ 232 Th ( 228 Th ) and $$^{226}\hbox {Ra}$$ 226 Ra in the crystals is ensured by boule recrystallization. The potential of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers to perform high sensitivity double-beta decay searches has been demonstrated with only $$10~\hbox {kg}\times \hbox {d}$$ 10 kg × d exposure: the two neutrino double-beta decay half-life of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo has been measured with the up-to-date highest accuracy as $$T_{1/2}$$ T 1 / 2 = [6.90 ± 0.15(stat.) ± 0.37(syst.)] $$\times ~10^{18}~\hbox {years}$$ × 10 18 years . Both crystallization and detector technologies favor lithium molybdate, which has been selected for the ongoing construction of the CUPID-0/Mo demonstrator, containing several kg of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo .

Abstract: The development of low-threshold detectors for the study of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and for the search for light dark matter necessitates methods of low-energy calibration. We suggest this can be provided by the nuclear recoils resulting from the $\gamma$ emission following thermal neutron capture. In particular, several MeV-scale single-$\gamma$ transitions induce well-defined nuclear recoil peaks in the 100 eV range. Using the FIFRELIN code, complete schemes of $\gamma$-cascades for various isotopes can be predicted with high accuracy to determine the continuous background of nuclear recoils below the calibration peaks. We present a comprehensive experimental concept for the calibration of CaWO$_4$ and Ge cryogenic detectors at a research reactor. For CaWO$_4$ the simulations show that two nuclear recoil peaks at 112.5 eV and 160.3 eV should be visible above background simply in the spectrum of the cryogenic detector. Then we discuss how the additional tagging for the associated $\gamma$ increases the sensitivity of the method and extends its application to a wider energy range and to Ge cryogenic detectors., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The first direct search for the double electron capture ($2\epsilon$) and the electron capture with positron emission ($\epsilon\beta^+$) in $^{144}$Sm to the ground state and to the excited levels of $^{144}$Nd was realized by measuring - over 1899 h - a 342 g sample of highly purified samarium oxide (Sm$_2$O$_3$) with the ultra-low background HP-Ge $\gamma$ spectrometer GeCris (465 cm$^3$) at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS). No effect was observed and half-life limits were estimated at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.1-1.3) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, for the first time half-life limits of the double beta ($2\beta^-$) decay of $^{154}$Sm to several excited levels of $^{154}$Gd have been set; they are at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.06-8) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.)., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures and 4 tables

Abstract: International audience; Final results of studies of 116Cd 2β decay with CdWO4 crystal scintillators, enriched in 116Cd to 82%, are presented. After few years (2011 – 2017) of measurements with radiopure 116CdWO4 scintillators (mass of 1.162 kg) at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Italy), the half-life of 116Cd relatively to 2ν2β decay to the ground state of 116Sn was measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy as T1/2=(2.63−0.12+0.11)×1019 yr. A new limit on 0ν2β decay of 116Cd was set as T1/2≥2.2×1023 yr at 90% C.L., which is the most stringent to-date restriction for this isotope. Limits for 0ν2β decay with majoron(s) emission, Lorentz-violating 2ν2β decay and 2β transitions to excited states of 116Sn were set at the level of T1/2≥1020−1022 yr.

Abstract: In this work, we want to highlight the potential of lithium as a target for spin-dependent dark matter search in cryogenic experiments, with a special focus on the low-mass region of the parameter space. We operated a prototype detector module based on a $$\hbox {Li}_2\hbox {MoO}_4$$ target crystal in an above-ground laboratory. Despite the high background environment, the detector sets a competitive limit on spin-dependent interactions of dark matter particles with protons and neutrons for masses between $$0.8~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ and $$1.5~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ .

Abstract: International audience; Recent developments, results, and perspectives arising from double beta decay experiments at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN by using HPGe detectors and crystal scintillators and by exploiting various approaches and different isotopes are summarized. The measurements here presented have been performed in the experimental set-ups of the DAMA collaboration. These setups are optimized for low-background studies and operate deep underground at LNGS. The presented results are of significant value to the field, and the sensitivity achieved for some of the considered isotopes is one of the best available to date.

The thermal signal boost in the presence of an electric field allows us to improve the signal-to-noise ratio reaching a baseline noise of around 20 eV. This device – coupled to an enriched 130TeO2 bolometer (435 g) – registered 160 eV Cherenkov light signal induced by 2615 keV 208Tl with a signal to noise ratio about 6:1. Since α particles emitted in decays of natural radionuclides do not produce the Cherenkov radiation, we were able to achieve an efficient α∕γ separation in the region of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te (Q-value is 2527 keV). Specifically, a rejection factor of 99.9% for α particles was obtained with a 98.3% acceptance of β∕γ events. The achieved α rejection efficiency is required to reduce the dominant α background in the follow-up of the CUORE experiment (CUPID), a ton-scale bolometric search with particle identification.

Abstract: A scintillating bolometer technology based on $^{100}$Mo-enriched lithium molybdate (Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$) crystals has been developed by LUMINEU to search for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu 2\beta$) decay of $^{100}$Mo. The results of several low temperature tests at underground environments have proved the reproducibility of high detector performance and crystal radiopurity: in particular $\sim$5--6~keV FWHM energy resolution and at least 9$\sigma$ rejection of $\alpha$'s in the vicinity of the $0\nu 2\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo (3034 keV) and below 10~$\mu$Bq/kg bulk activity of $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra. A modest acquired exposure (0.1~kg$\times$yr) is a limiting factor of the LUMINEU experiment sensitivity to the $0\nu 2\beta$ decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo ($T_{1/2}$ $\geq$ 0.7$\times$10$^{23}$ yr at 90\% C.L.), however the two-neutrino $2\beta$ decay has been measured with the best up to-date accuracy, $T_{1/2}$ = $\left[6.92 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.36(\mathrm{syst.})\right] \times 10^{18}$ yr. The applicability of the LUMINEU technology for a tonne-scale $0\nu 2\beta$ decay bolometric project CUPID is going to be demonstrated by the CUPID-0/Mo experiment with $\sim$5~kg of $^{100}$Mo embedded in forty 0.2~kg Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers. Abstract: The first observation of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE ν NS), reported by the COHERENT Collaboration in 2017, paved the way for a new generation of experiments using reactor ν e and aiming at precisely measuring this process. In this context, the BASKET (Bolometers At Sub-KeV Energy Thresholds) R&D project investigates the use of cryogenic detectors for a reactor CE ν NS experiment. This article reports on the first test of a Mo-doped lithium tungstate scintillating bolometer ( ⊘ 18 × 7 mm, 8 g), performed in an aboveground laboratory at CSNSM, Orsay (France). The detector bolometric performance (energy and time response, particle identification capabilities) and radiopurity have been studied and confirm the promising potential of lithium tungstate-based bolometric detectors for the measurement of CE ν NS at reactors.

Abstract: A large cylindrical cadmium molybdate crystal with natural isotopic abundance has been used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer. The measurement was performed above ground at milli-Kelvin temperature, with simultaneous readout of the heat and the scintillation light. The energy resolution as FWHM has achieved from 5 keV (at 238 keV) to 13 keV (at 2615 keV). We present the results of the α versus β / γ events discrimination. The low internal trace contamination of the CdMoO 4 crystal was evaluated as well. The detector performance with preliminary positive indications proves that cadmium molybdate crystal is a promising absorber for neutrinoless double beta decay scintillating bolometric experiments with 116 Cd and 100 Mo nuclides in the next-generation technique.

Abstract: International audience; We present a measurement of the cosmogenic activation in the germanium cryogenic detectors of the EDELWEISS III direct dark matter search experiment. The decay rates measured in detectors with different exposures to cosmic rays above ground are converted into production rates of different isotopes. The measured production rates in units of nuclei/kg/day are 82 $\pm$ 21 for $^3$H, 2.8 $\pm$ 0.6 for $^{49}$V, 4.6 $\pm$ 0.7 for $^{55}$Fe, and 106 $\pm$ 13 for $^{65}$Zn. These results are the most accurate for these isotopes. A lower limit on the production rate of $^{68}$Ge of 74 nuclei/kg/day is also presented. They are compared to model predictions present in literature and to estimates calculated with the ACTIVIA code.

Abstract: We present the performances of two 92% enriched $^{130}$TeO$_2$ crystals operated as thermal bolometers in view of a next generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}$Te. The crystals, 435 g each, show an energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV $\gamma$-line of $^{208}$Tl, of 6.5 and 4.3 keV FWHM. The only observable internal radioactive contamination arises from $^{238}$U (15 and 8 $\mu$Bq/kg, respectively). Abstract: We present the results of measurements demonstrating the efficiency of the EDELWEISS-III array of cryogenic germanium detectors for direct dark matter searches. The experimental setup and the FID (Fully Inter-Digitized) detector array is described, as well as the efficiency of the double measurement of heat and ionization signals in background rejection. For the whole set of 24 FID detectors used for coincidence studies, the baseline resolutions for the fiducial ionization energy are mainly below 0.7 keV$_{ee}$ (FHWM) whereas the baseline resolutions for heat energies are mainly below 1.5 keV$_{ee}$ (FWHM). The response to nuclear recoils as well as the very good discrimination capability of the FID design has been measured with an AmBe source. The surface $\beta$- and $\alpha$-decay rejection power of $R_{\rm surf} < 4 \times 10^{-5}$ per $\alpha$ at 90% C.L. has been determined with a $^{210}$Pb source, the rejection of bulk $\gamma$-ray events has been demonstrated using $\gamma$-calibrations with $^{133}$Ba sources leading to a value of $R_{\gamma{\rm -mis-fid}} < 2.5 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% C.L.. The current levels of natural radioactivity measured in the detector array are shown as the rate of single $\gamma$ background. The fiducial volume fraction of the FID detectors has been measured to a weighted average value of $(74.6 \pm 0.4)\%$ using the cosmogenic activation of the $^{65}$Zn and $^{68,71}$Ge isotopes. The stability and uniformity of the detector response is also discussed. The achieved resolutions, thresholds and background levels of the upgraded EDELWEISS-III detectors in their setup are thus well suited to the direct search of WIMP dark matter over a large mass range.

Abstract: A sample of 100MoO3 powder with molybdenum enriched in 100Mo to 99.5% and mass of 1199 g was measured for 18120 h in a low-background set-up with 4 HP Ge detectors ( ≃ 225 cm 3 volume each one) deep underground (3600 m w.e.) at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of the INFN (Italy). The two γ quanta of 540 keV and of 591 keV emitted in the deexcitation process after a 2 β 2 ν decay of 100Mo to the 0 1 + excited level of 100Ru ( E exc = 1131 keV ) are observed in the accumulated data both in coincidence and in the 1-dimensional sum spectrum. The measured half life is: T 1 / 2 = 6.9 − 0.8 + 1.0 ( stat. ) ± 0.7 ( syst. ) × 10 20 yr , well in agreement with positive results obtained in previous experiments. Moreover, the limit on charge non-conserving β decay of 100Mo is also set: τ CNC > 4.5 × 10 19 yr at 90% C.L.; it corresponds to the limit on CNC admixture in weak currents: ϵ ν 2 2.9 × 10 − 21 .

Abstract: Results are presented on our latest research, aimed at the development and study of oxide scintillation crystals (ZnWO4, ZnMoO4, PbWO4, PbMoO4, and MgWO4) with high scintillation yield and low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the improvement of these properties for conventional scintillators, as well as on new promising crystals based on metal tungstates and molybdates. Abstract: In June–August 2006 an expedition with the aim to look for archaeological lead with low levels of 210 Pb was organised by a Korean–Ukrainian collaboration on the shelf of the Black Sea, near the Crimean Peninsula. The first samples with ∼0.2 ton of total mass were found at a depth of 28 m among the relics of an ancient Greek ship. Their age has been dated to the first century BC. The element composition of the samples was measured by means of X-ray fluorescence and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses. The radiopurity of the lead was tested using low-level and ultra-low-level γ-spectrometry at a surface laboratory in Kyiv, at the Solotvina Underground Laboratory (Ukraine), and deep underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS, Italy). The samples have been assessed at the LNGS also by means of α-spectroscopy. For all investigated radionuclides, only upper limits could be obtained. Limits on activities of radionuclides in the lead after melting were set at the level of −1 ( 60 Co), −1 ( 137 Cs), −1 ( 226 Ra), −1 ( 228 Th), −1 ( 40 K), −1 ( 210 Po), and −1 ( 210 Pb). Any 210 Pb present in the lead after it was produced ca. 2000 years ago has decayed away. Assuming secular equilibrium in the 238 U chain in the lead, the activity of 210 Pb due to 238 U can be restricted to −1 before melting, and −1 after melting.

Abstract: A radiopure cadmium tungstate crystal scintillator, enriched in 106 Cd to 66%, with mass of 216 g (106CdWO4) was used in coincidence with four ultra-low background HPGe detectors contained in a single cryostat to search for double beta (2β) decay processes in 106 Cd. New improved half-life limits on the 2β processes in 106 Cd have been set on the level of 1020 — 1021 yr after 13085 h of data taking deep underground (3600 m w.e.) at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of INFN (Italy). In particular, the limit on the two neutrino electron capture with positron emission, Teβ+2 1/2≥ 1.1 × 1021 yr, has reached the region of theoretical predictions. The resonant neutrinoless double electron captures to the 2718, 2741 and 2748 keV excited states of 106 Pd are restricted on the level of T2e0v 1/2 ≥ (8.5 × 1020 - 1.4 × 1021) yr.

Abstract: International audience; The LUMINEU (Luminescent Underground Molybdenum Investigation for NEUtrino mass and nature) project envisages a high-sensitivity search for neutrinoless double beta (0 nu 2 beta) decay of Mo-100 with the help of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals. One of the crucial points for the successful performance of this experiment is the development of a protocol for producing high quality large mass ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with extremely high internal radiopurity. Here we report a significant progress in the development of large volume ZnMoO4 crystalline boules (with mass up to 1 kg) from deeply purified materials. We present and discuss the results achieved with two ZnMoO4 samples (with mass of about 0.3 kg each): one is a precursor of the LUMINEU project, while the other one was produced in the framework of LUMINEU with an improved purification / crystallization procedure. The two crystals were measured deep underground as scintillating bolometers in the EDELWEISS dilution refrigerator at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) protected by a rock overburden corresponding to 4800 m w.e. The results indicate that both tested crystals are highly radiopure. However, the advanced LUMINEU sample shows a clear improvement with respect to the precursor, exhibiting only a trace internal contamination related with Po-210 at the level of 1 mBq/kg, while the activity of Ra-226 and Th-228 is below 0.005 mBq/kg. This demonstrates that the LUMINEU purification and crystal-growth procedures are very efficient and leads to radiopurity levels which exceedingly satisfy not only the LUMINEU goals but also the requirements of a next-generation 0 nu 2 beta experiment.

Abstract: Lead tungstate (PbWO4) crystal scintillators are discussed as an active shield and light guides in Cd-116 double-beta decay experiment with Cadmium tungstate (CdWO4) scintillators. Scintillation properties and radioactive contamination of PbWO4 scintillators were investigated. Energy resolution of CdWO4 detector, coupled to PbWO4 light guide, was tested. Efficiency of PbWO4-based active shield to suppress background from the internal contamination of PbWO4 crystals, as well as possible contribution from radioactivity of copper shield and phototubes were calculated. Using of lead tungstate crystal scintillators as high-efficiency 4 pi active shield could allow to build sensitive 2 beta experiment (T-1/2(0 nu 2 beta) similar to 10(26) yr) to search for 0 nu 2 beta decay of Cd-116 with (CdWO4)-Cd-116 crystal scintillators. Abstract: Energy resolution, α / β ratio, and the pulse shape discrimination ability of the ZnWO 4 crystal scintillators were studied. The radioactive contamination of a ZnWO 4 crystal was investigated in the Solotvina Underground Laboratory. Possibilities to apply ZnWO 4 crystals for the dark matter and double beta decay searches are discussed. New improved half-life limits on double beta decay in zinc isotopes were established, in particular, for ɛ β + decay of 64 Zn as: T 1 / 2 2 ν ⩾ 8.9 × 10 18 years and T 1 / 2 0 ν ⩾ 3.6 × 10 18 years, both at 68% CL.

Abstract: ISBN: 978-0-7354-1333-7; International audience; The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on 0ν2β decay of 100 Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals enriched in 100 Mo operated as cryogenic scintillating bolometers. Large volume ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators (∼ 0.3 kg) were developed and tested showing high performance in terms of radiopurity, energy resolution and α/β particle discrimination capability. Zinc molybdate crystal scintillators enriched in 100 Mo were grown for the first time by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique with a high crystal yield and an acceptable level of enriched molybdenum irrecoverable losses. A background level of ∼ 0.5 counts/(yr keV ton) in the region of interest can be reached in a large detector array thanks to the excellent detectors radiopurity and particle discrimination capability, suppression of randomly coinciding events by pulse-shape analysis, and anticoincidence cut. These results pave the way to future sensitive searches based on the LUMINEU technology, capable of approaching and exploring the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern.

Abstract: An experiment to search for 2β processes in 116Cd with the help of enriched (to 82%) cadmium tungstate crystal scintillators is in progress at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (LNGS, Italy). After 11074 h of data taking in the last configuration, the preliminary estimate for the half-life of 116Cd relatively to 2ν2β decay is T1/2 = [2.52 ± 0.02(stat.) ± 0.14(syst.)] × 1019 yr. By using the data of previous stages of the experiment with a similar level of background (≈ 0.1 counts/(keV kg yr) in the energy interval 2.7 – 2.9 MeV; the total time of measurements is 19770 h) we have obtained a new limit on the 0ν2β decay of 116Cd to the ground state of 116Sn: T1/2 ≥ 1.9 × 1023 yr at 90% C.L. New limits on different 2β processes in 116Cd (decays with majorons, transitions to the excited levels) are obtained on the level of T1/2 ≥ 1020 – 1022 yr.

Abstract: Results on the search for rare nuclear decays with the ultra low background facility STELLA at the LNGS using gamma ray spectrometry are presented. In particular, the best T1/2 limits were obtained for double beta processes in 96Ru and 104Ru. Several isotopes, which potentially decay through different double beta decay channels, including also possible resonant double electron captures, were investigated for the first time (156Dy, 158Dy, 184Os, 192Os, 190Pt, 198Pt). Search for resonant absorption of solar 7Li axions in a LiF crystal gave the best limit for the mass of 7Li axions (< 8.6 keV). Abstract: The Aurora experiment to investigate double beta decay of $^{116}$Cd with the help of 1.162 kg cadmium tungstate crystal scintillators enriched in $^{116}$Cd to 82\% is in progress at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. The half-life of $^{116}$Cd relatively to the two neutrino double beta decay is measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy $T_{1/2}=(2.62\pm0.14)\times10^{19}$ yr. The sensitivity of the experiment to the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{116}$Cd to the ground state of $^{116}$Sn is estimated as $T_{1/2} \geq 1.9\times10^{23}$ yr at 90\% CL, which corresponds to the effective Majorana neutrino mass limit $\langle m_{\nu}\rangle \leq (1.2-1.8)$ eV. The resonant neutrinoless double-electron captures to the 2718-, 2741-, and 2748-keV excited states of ${}^{106}$Pd are restricted to ${T}_{1/2}^{0\ensuremath{\nu}2K}\ensuremath{\geqslant}4.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{20}$ yr, ${T}_{1/2}^{0\ensuremath{\nu}K{L}_{1}}\ensuremath{\geqslant}9.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{20}$ yr, and ${T}_{1/2}^{0\ensuremath{\nu}K{L}_{3}}\ensuremath{\geqslant}4.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{20}$ yr, respectively (all limits at 90$%$ confidence level). A possible resonant enhancement of the $0\ensuremath{\nu}2\ensuremath{\varepsilon}$ processes is estimated in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach. Abstract: Results are presented of our latest research, aimed at the development and study of oxide scintillation crystals with high scintillation yield and low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the improvement of these properties for conventional scintillators, as well as on new promising crystals based on metal tungstates and molybdates. Abstract: Radiopure ZnWO 4 crystal scintillators with mass (0.1–0.7 kg) have been developed and put inmeasurement in the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN to search for rare processes. The radioactive contamination of the crystals have been estimated and the double beta decay of zinc and tungsten isotopes was searched for, reaching a sensitivity at the level of 10 18 −10 21 yr; in addition a new half-life limit on alpha transition of 183 W to the metastable excited level of 179 Hf has also been obtained. The achieved radiopurity of the ZnWO 4 crystals make them very promising detectors for ββ decay investigations while their anisotropic features make them very interesting detectors to investigate dark matter particles directionality.

Abstract: AMoRE (Advanced Mo based Rare process Experiment) collaboration is going to use calcium molybdate crystals as cryogenic scintillation detector in a search for neutrinoless DBD of 100Mo isotope. Simultaneous detection of phonons and light will be used to reject internal background. A FWHM resolution of 0.2% in the phonon channel has been achieved with a 0.5 cm3 crystal. Several 40Ca100MoO4 crystals (≈ 0.5 kg) have been developed from enriched 100Mo and depleted 40Ca materials. The light yield of these crystals has been shown to be comparable with reference CaMoO4 scintillators for temperatures ranging down to 8 K. The content of dangerous radioisotopes in the crystals is under measurement. The projected sensitivity of the experiment for a 250 kg × years exposure is lim T1/2 ~ 3 × 1026 years, which corresponds to the effective Majorana neutrino mass mv ~ 0.02 – 0.06 eV.

Abstract: Sample of 100MoO3 with molybdenum enriched in 100Mo to 99.5% and mass of 1199 g was measured deep underground (3600 m w.e.) in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN, Italy; during 17249 h with a low-background set-up with 4 HP Ge detectors. After 2β2ν decay of 100Mo to the 0+1 excited level of 100Ru (Eexc = 1131 keV), two γ quanta of 540 keV and 591 keV should be emitted in deexcitation process. Both these γ's are observed in the accumulated data as in coincidence spectrum as well in 1-dimensional sum spectrum. Measured half life is T1/2 = (7.0+1.1−0.8) × 1020 yr, in agreement with positive results obtained in previous experiments.

Abstract: EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is an astro-particle physics facility aiming to directly detect galactic dark matter. The Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane has been selected as host laboratory. The EURECA collaboration unites CRESST, EDELWEISS and the Spanish-French experiment ROSEBUD, thus concentrating and focussing effort on cryogenic detector research in Europe into a single facility. EURECA will use a target mass of up to one ton, enough to explore WIMP - nucleon scalar scattering cross sections in the region of 10-9 - 10-10 picobarn. A major advantage of EURECA is the planned use of more than just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification). © EAS, EDP Sciences 2009.
