Abstract

International audience; A record number of Sn100 nuclei was detected and new isotopic species toward the proton dripline were discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Decay spectroscopy was performed with the high-efficiency detector arrays WAS3ABi and EURICA. Both the half-life and the β-decay end point energy of Sn100 were measured more precisely than the literature values. The value and the uncertainty of the resulting strength for the pure 0+→1+ Gamow-Teller decay was improved to BGT=4.4-0.7+0.9. A discrimination between different model calculations was possible for the first time, and the level scheme of In100 is investigated further.

Abstract

The HADES data from p + Nb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √sNN = 3.2 GeV are analyzed employing a statistical hadronization model. The model can successfully describe the production yields of the identified hadrons π0, η, Ʌ, K0 s, ω with parameters Tchem = (99 ± 11) MeV and μb = (619 ± 34) MeV, which fit well into the chemical freeze-out systematics found in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, we reanalyze our previous HADES data from Ar + KCl collisions at √SNN = 2.6 GeV with an updated version of the model. We address equilibration in heavy-ion collisions by testing two aspects: the description of yields and the regularity of freeze-out parameters from a statistical model fit as a function of colliding energy and system size. Despite its success, the model fails to describe the observed Ξ- yields in both, p + Nb and Ar + KCl. Special emphasis is put on feed-down contributions from higher-lying resonance states as a possible explanation for the observed excess. © 2016, SIF, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. 52 6 Cited By :6

Abstract

With the HADES spectrometer at GSI we have studied dilepton production in various collision systems from elementary N + N , over p + A , up to the medium-heavy Ar + KCl system. We have confirmed the puzzling results of the former DLS collaboration at the Bevalac. While we have traced the origin of the excess pair yield in C + C collisions to elementary p + p and n + p processes, we find a significant contribution from the dense phase of the collision in larger Ar + KCl system. From recently obtained e + e - pair spectra in p + p and p + Nb interactions at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy the inclusive production cross sections for neutral pions, η , ω and ρ mesons are extracted for the first time at this beam energy. Furthermore, the production mechanisms of the vector mesons, which are not known at these energies, are investigated. The direct comparison of p + p and p + Nb data allows us to investigate in-medium mass modifications of vector mesons at nuclear ground state density. On the other hand, exclusive production of ω and η mesons in p + p reactions at 3.5 GeV were studied via their π+π-π0 decay channel. Production cross sections and angular distributions for both states were determined.

Abstract

The High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) has been recently commissioned at GSI Darmstadt. It has been designed to study hadron properties inside nuclear matter via measurements of dielectron decays in proton, pion and heavy ion induced reactions in 1 - 2 AGeV energy range. We report first preliminary results on invariant masses of e+ e- pairs measured in 12C + 12C collisions at E = 2 AGeV and compare them to simulations based on UrQMD transport model. We present the analysis of the inclusive $K^{0}$ production in p+p and p+Nb collisions measured with the HADES detector at a beam kinetic energy of 3.5 GeV. Data are compared to the GiBUU transport model. The data suggest the presence of a repulsive momentum-dependent kaon potential as predicted by the Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). For the kaon at rest and at normal nuclear density, the ChPT potential amounts to $\approx 35$ MeV. A detailed tuning of the kaon production cross sections implemented in the model has been carried out to reproduce the experimental data measured in p+p collisions. Abstract

The νg9/2,d5/2,s1/2νg9/2,d5/2,s1/2 orbitals are assumed to be responsible for the swift onset of collectivity observed in the region below 68Ni. Especially the single-particle energies and strengths of these orbitals are of importance. We studied such properties in the nearby 67Ni nucleus, by performing a (d,p)(d,p)-experiment in inverse kinematics employing a post-accelerated radioactive ion beam (RIB) at the REX-ISOLDE facility. The experiment was performed at an energy of 2.95 MeV/u using a combination of the T-REX particle detectors, the Miniball γ -detection array and a newly-developed delayed-correlation technique as to investigate μs-isomers. Angular distributions of the ground state and multiple excited states in 67Ni were obtained and compared with DWBA cross-section calculations, leading to the identification of positive-parity states with substantial νg9/2νg9/2 (1007 keV) and νd5/2νd5/2 (2207 keV and 3277 keV) single-particle strengths up to an excitation energy of 5.8 MeV. 50% of the νd5/2νd5/2 single-particle strength relative to the νg9/2νg9/2-orbital is concentrated in and shared between the first two observed 5/2+5/2+ levels. A comparison with extended Shell Model calculations and equivalent (3He, d ) studies in the region around 9040Zr50 highlights similarities for the strength of the negative-parity pf and positive-parity g9/2g9/2 state, but differences are observed for the d5/2d5/2 single-particle strength.

Abstract

A high-statistic data sample of Ar(1.76 AGeV)+KCl events recorded with HADES is used to search for a hypertriton signal. An upper production limit per centrality-triggered event of $ 1.04\times 10^{-3}$ on the 3 $ \sigma$ level is derived. Comparing this value with the number of successfully reconstructed $ \Lambda$ hyperons allows to determine an upper limit on the ratio $ N_{_{\Lambda}^{3}H}/N_{\Lambda}$ , which is confronted with statistical and coalescence-type model calculations.

Abstract

Results on the deep sub-threshold production of the short-lived hadronic resonance K*(892)0 are reported for collisions of Ar + KCl at 1.76A GeV beam energy, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. The K*(892)0 production probability per central collision of \( P_{K^{*0}}=(4.4\pm 1.1 \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-4}\) and the K*(892)0/K0 ratio of \( P_{K^{*0}}/P_{K^0}=(1.9\pm 0.5\pm 0.3)\times 10^{-2}\) are determined at the lowest energy so far (i.e. deep below the threshold for the corresponding production in nucleon-nucleon collisions, \( \sqrt{s_{NN}}-\sqrt{s_{thr}}=-340\) MeV). The K*0/K0 ratio is compared with results of other experiments and with the predictions of the UrQMD transport approach and of the statistical hadronization model. The experimental K*0 yield and the K*0/K0 ratio are overestimated by the transport model by factors of about five and two, respectively. In a chemically equilibrated medium the ratio corresponds to a temperature of the thermalized system being systematically lower than the value determined by the yields of the stable and long-lived hadrons produced in Ar + KCl collisions. From the present measurement, we conclude that sub-threshold K* production either cannot be considered to proceed in a system being in thermal equilibrium or these short-lived resonances appear undersaturated, for example as a result of the rescattering of the decay particles in the ambient hadronic medium.

Abstract

We present results on dielectron production in Ar+KCl collisions at 1.76A GeV. For the first time $\omega$ mesons could be reconstructed in a heavy-ion reaction at a bombarding energy which is well below the production threshold in free nucleon-nucleon collisions. The omega multiplicity has been extracted and compared to the yields of other particles, in particular of the phi meson. At intermediate e+e- invariant masses, we find a strong enhancement of the pair yield over a reference spectrum from elementary nucleon-nucleon reactions suggesting the onset of non-trivial effects of the nuclear medium. Transverse-mass spectra and angular distributions have been reconstructed in three invariant mass bins. In the former unexpectedly large slopes are found for high-mass pairs. The latter, in particular the helicity-angle distributions, are largely consistent with expectations for a pair cocktail dominated at intermediate masses by delta Dalitz decays., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication by Phys. Abstract

We report on recent data of e+e- pair emission in proton nucleus collisions at energies above the light vector meson production thresholds. Invariant mass distributions for the p+Nb system at Ekin = 3.5 GeV are compared to data from elementary p+p reactions at the same beam energy. We observe a constant π0/ω yield ratio for both systems but an excess in the mass region above the π0 mass. Abstract

We present the transverse momentum spectra and rapidity distributions of pi(-) and K-S(0) in Ar + KCl reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 1.756 A GeV measured with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES). The reconstructed K-S(0) sample is characterized by good event statistics for a wide range in momentum and rapidity. We compare the experimental pi(-) and K-S(0) distributions to predictions by the Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) model. The model calculations show that K-S(0) at low transverse momenta constitute a particularly well-suited tool to investigate the kaon in-medium potential. Our K-S(0) data suggest a strong repulsive in-medium K-0 potential of about 40 MeV strength., We gratefully acknowledge the useful discussions with J. Aichelin and H. Oeschler. Abstract

The HADES spectrometer installed at GSI Darmstadt is a second generation experiment to study production of lepton pairs from proton, pion and nucleus induced reactions at the SIS/BEVALAC energy regime. The HADES study of the light C+C system at 1 and 2 AGeV confirms former finding of the DLS collaboration. Further studies of the reaction p+p and d+p allowed to reveal contribution to the above mentioned data of di-leptons produced during first chance collision. Abstract

We present the results of a study of charged pion production in 12C + 12C collisions at incident beam energies of 1A GeV and 2A GeV using the HADES spectrometer at GSI. The main emphasis of the HADES program is on the dielectron signal from the early phase of the collision. Here, however, we discuss the data with respect to the emission of charged hadrons, specifically the production of pi+- mesons, which are related to neutral pions representing a dominant contribution to the dielectron yield. We have performed the first large-angular range measurement of the distribution of pi+- mesons for the 12C + 12C collision system covering a fairly large rapidity interval. The pion yields, transverse-mass and angular distributions are compared with calculations done within a transport model, as well as with existing data from other experiments. Abstract

HADES is a versatile magnetic spectrometer aimed at studying dielectron production in pion, proton and heavy-ion-induced collisions. Its main features include a ring imaging gas Cherenkov detector for electron-hadron discrimination, a tracking system consisting of a set of 6 superconducting coils producing a toroidal field and drift chambers and a multiplicity and electron trigger array for additional electron-hadron discrimination and event characterization. A two-stage trigger system enhances events containing electrons. The physics program is focused on the investigation of hadron properties in nuclei and in the hot and dense hadronic matter. The detector system is characterized by an 85% azimuthal coverage over a polar angle interval from 18° to 85°, a single electron efficiency of 50% and a vector meson mass resolution of 2.5%. Identification of pions, kaons and protons is achieved combining time-of-flight and energy loss measurements over a large momentum range (0.1 < p < 1.0 GeV/c). Abstract

HADES is a secondary generation experiment operated at GSI Darmstadt with the main goal to study dielectron production in proton, pion and heavy ion induced reactions. The first part of the HADES mission is to reinvestigate the puzzling pair excess measured by the DLS collaboration in C+C and Ca+Ca collisions at 1A GeV. For this purpose dedicated measurements with the C+C system at 1 and 2A GeV were performed. The pair excess above a cocktail of free hadronic decays has been extracted and compared to the one measured by DLS. Abstract

The HADES spectrometer at GSI (Darmstadt) is investigating the e + e - pair production in p+p, p+A and A+A collisions. In this contribution we would like to highlight the physics motivations and the experiments performed so far, focusing mainly on the first results coming from 12C + 12C collisions at 1 and 2AGeV, and on preliminary results from p+p/d+p collisions at 1.25AGeV.

In pp collisions at 2.2GeV kinetic beam energy, the exclusive η production and the Dalitz decay η -> γe(+)e(-) have been reconstructed. The electromagnetic form factor of the latter decay was found to be in good agreement with the existing theoretical predictions. 5 pages, 2 figures.-- ISI Article Identifier: 000248251400153, Printed version published on Aug 2007., We report on a measurement of electron pair production in C-12(+) C-12 collisions at an incident energy of 2 GeV per nucleon with the HADES spectrometer. The measured pair production probabilities span over five orders of magnitude from the π(0)-Dalitz to the ρ/w invariant-mass region. Dalitz decays of π(0) and η account for all the yield up to 0.15 GeV/c^2, but for only about 50% above this mass. The excess yield is in agreement with the former DLS result if one assumes that it scales with beam energy like pion production. Abstract

The identification of the light mesons in the HADES spectrometer is based on an invariant mass reconstruction of their decay into e+e- pairs. In the dilepton (e+e-) signal reconstruction, particularly important is the reduction of a huge combinatorial background arising from wrong combinations of e+ and e- to unlike sign pairs. Methods of the dilepton signal and combinatorial background reconstruction in the HADES spectrometer will be presented.

Abstract

The high-acceptance dielectron spectrometer (HADES) has become operational at GSI Darmstadt. The primary physics programme is to study in-medium changes of light vector mesons via their e+e- decays. The methods of dilepton signal reconstruction in the HADES spectrometer and preliminary dilepton spectra for C+C reactions at 2 A GeV are presented. In the signal reconstruction, particularly important is the reduction of the huge combinatorial background arising from e+e- combinations of leptons from gamma conversion in materials with other leptons in the collision. The purity of the dilepton signal is determined by using GEANT simulations with the full HADES geometry and a realistic detector response. © 2005 IOP Publishing Ltd. 31 4 S231 S237

HADES is a second generation experiment designed to study dielectron production in proton, pion, and heavy ion induced reactions at the GSI accelerator facility in Darmstadt. The physics programme of HADES is focused on in-medium properties of the light vector mesons. Abstract

Advanced nuclear structure models predict the presence of the shell closures N = 14, 16 in neutron-rich O isotopes rather than N = 20. Spectroscopic investigations performed at the neutron drip line have recently confirmed such predictions showing that the 24O is a doubly magic nucleus (Z = 8, N = 16). Predictions within the shell model calculation for the 23,24O ground state have been confirmed measuring their spectroscopic factors. Abstract

The structures of 3+ states in Os have been debated over several decades. Based on measured B(E2) values they were interpreted in 186–192Os as Kπ = 4+ two-phonon vibrations, whereas inelastic scattering, and (t,α) work imply a hexadecapole phonon description. To clarify the nature of these Kπ = 4+ bands in 186,188Os, we performed a (3He,d) reaction on 185,187Re targets using 30 MeV 3He beams and a Q3D spectrograph. Absolute cross sections were obtained for excited states up to 3 MeV at 9 angles from 5° to 50°. Results indicate a significant 52+[402]π+32+[402]π component in agreement with quasiparticle phonon model predictions for a single hexadecapole phonon structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of recoil distance Doppler-shift lifetime measurements have been carried out to probe collectivity and configuration mixing of different shapes in the vicinity of neutron mid-shell Pb nuclei. Lifetime measurements of 186Pb and 194Po, the first ever utilizing the recoil-decay tagging method, probed the collectivity of coexisting prolate and oblate shapes in this region. Abstract

An antiproton-ion collider (AIC) has been proposed for the FAIR Project at Darmstadt to independently determine rms radii for protons and neutrons in stable and short lived nuclei by means of antiproton annihilation at medium energies. The AIC makes use of the ELISe electron ion collider complex to store, cool and collide antiprotons of 30 MeV energy with short lived radioactive ions in the NESR. The exotic nuclei are produced by projectile fragmentation or projectile fission and separated in the Super FRS. By detecting the loss of stored ions using the Schottky method the total absorption cross-section for antiprotons on the stored ions with mass A will be measured. Cross sections for the absorption on protons and neutrons, respectively, will be measured by the detection of residual nuclei with A-1 either by the Schottky method or by detecting them in recoil detectors after the first dipole stage of the NESR following the interaction zone. Abstract

We report on the “safe” Coulomb excitation of neutron-rich Cd isotopes in the vicinity of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn. The radioactive nuclei have been produced by ISOLDE at CERN and postaccelerated by the REX-ISOLDE facility. The γ-decay of excited states has been detected by the MINIBALL array. Abstract

The layout and status of MAFF at the Munich high flux reactor FRM-II is described. At MAFF 1014 fissions/s will be induced by thermal neutrons in a target with approx. 1 g of 235U. The situation is compared to the SPIRAL2 facility where 1014 fissions/s are expected by fast neutron fission in a target containing 5100 g of 238U. A comparison of the yields of SPIRAL2 and MAFF is performed to show the complementarity of the two ISOL-facilities for fission fragments. MAFF has approximately five times the beam intensities of SPIRAL2 for short-lived fission isotopes with lifetimes shorter than 5 s and thus will focus on the most neutron-rich nuclei, while SPIRAL2 has better perspectives for the more intense, less neutron-rich post-accelerated beams. A problem that also deserves attention is the production of α emitters, in particular plutonium. Here MAFF has the advantage to contain the Pu-producing 238U only as impurity not as the main fissile system. If SPIRAL2 would use 235U instead of 238U this problematic issue could be avoided at the cost of a further reduction in intensity of very neutron-rich fission fragments by a factor of 10. Abstract

The shell structure of atomic nuclei is associated with 'magic numbers' and originates in the nearly independent motion of neutrons and protons in a mean potential generated by all nucleons. During ?+-decay, a proton transforms into a neutron in a previously not fully occupied orbital, emitting a positron-neutrino pair with either parallel or antiparallel spins, in a Gamow-Teller or Fermi transition, respectively. The transition probability, or strength, of a Gamow-Teller transition depends sensitively on the underlying shell structure and is usually distributed among many states in the neighbouring nucleus. Here we report measurements of the half-life and decay energy for the decay of 100Sn, the heaviest doubly magic nucleus with equal numbers of protons and neutrons. In the ?-decay of 100Sn, a large fraction of the strength is observable because of the large decay energy. We determine the largest Gamow-Teller strength so far measured in allowed nuclear ?-decay, establishing the 'superallowed' nature of this Gamow-Teller transition. The large strength and the low-energy states in the daughter nucleus, 100In, are well reproduced by modern, large-scale shell model calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From Pb ( p, p') via isobaric analog resonances in Bi , at E = 6420 keV in the doubly magic nucleus Pb , a new state with spin 2 with half the s p strength and major g f , d f fractions is identified. Ten more 2 states up to E = 7.0 MeV are identified and their structure discussed, among them six states with new spin assignments. Abstract

We have studied the multi-nucleon transfer reaction 12C ( 7Li ,p) at Elab = 44 MeV, populating states in the oxygen isotope 18O . The experiments were performed at the Tandem accelerator of the Maier-Leibniz Laboratory in Munich using the high-resolution Q3D magnetic spectrograph. States were populated up to an excitation energy of 21.2MeV with an overall energy resolution of 45keV, and 30 new states of 18O have been identified. The structure of the rotational bands observed is discussed in terms of cluster bands with the underlying cluster structures: 14C$ $\displaystyle \otimes$ $\displaystyle \alpha$$ and 12C ⊗ 2 n ⊗ $ \alpha$ . Abstract

At ISOL (Isotope Separator On-Line) facilities, which utilize thick primary production targets, beams of neutron-rich iron isotopes are difficult to obtain due to the long extraction time of these isotopes out of the target matrix. At REX-ISOLDE, an exploratory experiment was carried out to investigate the possibility of producing a post-accelerated beam of neutron-rich iron isotopes by the in-trap decay of neutron-rich manganese isotopes, which are available at ISOLDE using the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS). This production mechanism was tested for the first time at REX-ISOLDE with an intense and short-lived beam of 61Mn isotopes. In this work, the proof of principle of this method is demonstrated, although the technical details of the trapping process are currently not well understood and are still under investigation. By comparing the Q -values for the 46Ti ( 3He , t46V and 47Ti ( 3He , t47V reactions to the isobaric analogue states the Q -value for the superallowed Fermi decay of 46V has been determined as QEC( ^46V ) = (7052.11±0.27) keV. The result is compatible with the values from two recent direct mass measurements but is at variance with the previously most precise reaction Q -value. The lifetime of the 17/2+ yrast state in 195Po has been measured using the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique to be $ \tau$ = 43(11) ps. Abstract

Electron beams with particle energy of ~10 keV were sent through 300 nm thick ceramic (Si3N4 + SiO2) foils and the resulting electron energy distribution functions were recorded using a retarding grid technique. The results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations performed with two publicly available packages, Geant4 and Casino v2.42. It is demonstrated that Geant4, unlike Casino, provides electron energy distribution functions very similar to the experimental distributions. Both simulation packages provide a quite precise average energy of transmitted electrons: we demonstrate that the maximum uncertainty of the calculated values of the average energy is 6% for Geant4 and 8% for Casino, taking into account all systematic uncertainties and the discrepancies in the experimental and simulated data. Abstract

Excited states in the deformed nucleus 168Er have been studied with high energy resolution in the ( p, t) reaction, with the Munich Q3D spectrograph. A large number of excited 0+ states (25) and 2+ states (64) have been assigned up to 4.0-MeV excitation energy. This allows detailed investigations along two directions of current interest: first, an extension of microscopic model interpretations into the region of medium level density above the pairing gap; second, a first analysis of the statistical fluctuation (order/chaos) properties of pure sequences of levels, in one deformed nucleus. Predictions of two models (the quasiparticle-phonon model and the projected shell model) are compared to the data, and it is concluded that, in both cases, mixing of more configurations is required in the wave functions. Abstract

Reliable and precise lifetimes of excited states in 154Gd and 156Dy were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique. Excited states of 154Gd were populated via Coulomb excitation with a 32S beam at 110 MeV delivered by the FN tandem accelerator at the University of Cologne. For 156Dy a coincidence plunger experiment was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with the GASP spectrometer and the Cologne coincidence plunger apparatus using the reaction 124Sn(36S,4n)156Dy at a beam energy of 155 MeV. Shape changes previously suggested to appear in the ground-state band (gsb) of 156Dy and in the s-band above the first band crossing were not supported by the transition probabilities determined in this work. The measured transition probabilities of 156Dy and 154Gd as well as the corresponding energy spectra are compared with the predictions of the recently proposed X(5) model and in the case of 156Dy also with an IBA fit. Abstract

See paper for full list of authors,; We present data on dielectron emission in proton induced reactions on a Nb target at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy measured with HADES installed at GSI. The data represent the first high statistics measurement of proton-induced dielectron radiation from cold nuclear matter in a kinematic regime, where strong medium effects are expected. Combined with the good mass resolution of 2%, it is the first measurement sensitive to changes of the spectral functions of vector mesons, as predicted by models for hadrons at rest or small relative momenta. Comparing the e+e− invariant mass spectra to elementary p + p data, we observe for e+e− momenta Pee0.8 GeV/c) and are not conclusive yet. For the ρ meson, the CLAS experiment at JLab [13] reports a slight broadening and no shift of the ρ pole mass in photon induced reactions, while the E325 experiment at KEK [14] deduced a shift but no broadening in proton induced reactions. For the ω and ϕ mesons, experiments [15], [16], [17] and [18] report a sizable collisional broadening (up to a factor 16 larger than the natural line width in case of the ω) inside the medium extracted by comparing the nuclear modification of the cross sections to microscopic transport models. Besides the complications due to additional yield fed by pion driven secondary collisions inside the nucleus, the disadvantage of these indirect measurements is their model dependence. For instance, the recent analysis of [19] led to a significantly different width of the ω meson inside the medium as extracted in [15]. Abstract

The HADES experiment, installed at GSI, Darmstadt, measures di-electron production in A+A, p/pi+N and p/pi+A collisions. Here, the pi0 and eta Dalitz decays have been reconstructed in the exclusive p+p reaction at 2.2 GeV to form a reference cocktail for long-lived di-electron sources. In the C+C reaction at 1 and 2 GeV/u, these long-lived sources have been subtracted from the measured inclusive e+e- yield to exhibit the signal from the early phase of the collision.
