Abstract

D∗± production via e+e−→D∗±X has been measured at an average CM energy of 34.4 GeV. The D∗± energy spectrum is hard, with a maximum near χ = 0.6. The size of the D∗ cross section, R D ∗ = σ( e + e − → D ∗ X ) σ μμ = 2.50 ± 0.64 ± 0.88 (assuming R D ∗0 = R D ∗+ ) indicates that a large fraction of charm quark production yields D∗ mesons. The D∗± angular distribution exhibits a forward—backward asymmetry, A = −0.28 ± 0.13. This is consistent with that expected in the standard theory for weak neutral currents and leads to |gAc| = 0.89 ± 0.44 for the axial vector coupling of the charm quark.

Abstract

We present an analysis of electroweak leptonic couplings from high statistics experiments on Bhabha scattering and μ pair production at an energy of 34.5 GeV. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the μ pairs was measured to be −0.098±0.023±0.005. The data were found to agree well with the standard theory of electroweak interaction giving sin2θW=0.27±0.07. The leptonic weak couplings were determined to begv=0.000±0.170 andgA=−0.481±0.055. The data were also used to investigate a class of composite models for leptons.

Abstract

Three-jet events produced by e+e- annihilation into hadrons at 34.6 GeV c.m. energy were studied by comparing them with 2nd order QCD and two different models of fragmentation. The distribution of low energy particles in the 3-jet plane is found to be better described by the LUND color string model than by the independent jet model. The opposite is true for more energetic particles flowing between the 3 jets. The average transverse momenta in jets can be described with values of σq between 350 and 500 MeV/c for the gluon jet. © 1985 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

We present an analysis of ρ0ρ0 production by two photons in the ρ0ρ0 invariant mass range from 1.2 to 2.0 GeV. From a study of the angular correlations in the process γγ→ρ0ρ0→π- π+π- we exclude a dominant contribution from JP=0- or 2- states. The data indicate sizeable contributions from JP=0+ for four pion masses M4π1.7 GeV. The data are also well described by a model with isotropic production and uncorrelated isotropic decay of the ρ0,s. The cross section stays high below the nominal ρ0ρ0 threshold, i.e. M4π

Abstract

We have measured the processe + e −→e + e −+hadrons, where one of the scattered electrons was detected at large angles, withQ 2 ranging from 7 to 70 (VeV/c)2. The photon structure functionF 2 γ (x, Q2) was determined at an averageQ 2 of 23 (GeV/c)2. The measurements were compared to theoretical predictions of the Quark Parton Model and Quantum Chromodynamics. In both models a hadronic part was added. Within the errors the data are in agreement with the QPM using quark masses of 300 MeV/c2 for the light quarks. The data also agree with a QCD calculation including higher order corrections. A fit yielded a $$\Lambda _{\overline {MS} } $$ value of 140 −65 +190 MeV, where the errors include statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Abstract

Hard processes in photon-photon collisions are studied using high statistics data without requiring an electron tag. A high yield of hadrons with p t in the range 1.5–3.0 GeV/ c is observed. This yield exceeds the expectation of the Born term by a factor of four.

We have observed τ pair production at average CM energies of 13.9, 22.3, 34.5 and 43.1 GeV. The cross-sections are consistent with QED, the cut off parameters beingΛ +>161 GeV andΛ −169 GeV (95% CL). Abstract

Samples of ∼1,900 identified protons and ∼500 Λ have been used to search for decuplet baryon production ine+e− annihilation at a c.m. energy of 34.4 GeV. Thep π+ and Λ π± invariant mass spectra contain no Δ orΣ* signals. Upper limits, at 95% confidence level, are that less than 12% of allp and less than 26% of all Λ come from the decay of doubly charged Δ and singly chargedΣ* states respectively. Abstract

Exclusive production of proton-antiproton pairs by two photon scattering at CM energies between 2.0 GeV and 3.1 GeV has been measured with the TASSO detector at the e + e − storage ring PETRA. The angular distribution is flat within the accepted CM angular range | cos Θ ∗ |⩽0.7 . The integrated cross section (| cos Θ ∗ |⩽0.6) drops from about 4 nb at 2 GeV to less than 0.5 nb above 3 GeV. For the two-photon production of the η c (2984) and its subsequent decay into proton-antiproton the upper limit Γ(η c →γγ)· B (η c → p p ) keV (95% CL) is found.

Abstract

D ∗± production via e + e − → D ∗± X was studied at CM energies near 34 GeV. The charged particles produced in the hemisphere opposite to that of the D ∗ were used to investigate the fragmentation of charm jets. All spectra studied show a close similarity between the charm jet and the average jet obtained by summing over all quark flavours. The spectra of particles produced in the D ∗ hemisphere were used to study separately first rank and higher rank fragmentation.

Abstract

Multihadron events produced bye+e− annihilation at a c.m. energy of 34.6 GeV have been used to determine αs. The predictions of 1 st and 2nd order QCD models with independent jet and string fragmentation have been compared to a large variety of kinematic variables such as event shapes, transverse momentum spectra, jet masses, 3-cluster thrust and the asymmetry of energy-energy correlations. The value of αs has been found to depend on the variables used, on the fragmentation model and on the treatment of soft gluons in the 2nd order QCD calculation. Within the models considered αs has been found in complete 2nd order QCD to lie between 0.12 and 0.23.

Abstract

We have observed exclusive production of K + K − and K S O K S O pairs and the excitation of the f′(1515) tensor meson in photon-photon collisions. Assuming the f′ to be production in a helicity 2 state, we determine Λ( f ′ → γγ) B( f ′ → K K ) = 0.11 ± 0.02 ± 0.04 keV . The non-strange quark of the f′ is found to be less than 3% (95% CL). For the θ(1640) we derive an upper limit for the product Λ(θ rarr; γγ K K ) keV (95% CL ) .

We have determined the average lifetime of hadrons containing b quarks produced in e+e− annihilation to be τ B = 1.83 +0.83 +0.37 − −0.34 ×10 −12 s . Our method uses charged decay products from both non-leptonic and semileptonic decay modes.

Abstract

We present evidence for the production of Ξ· − , Ξ − in e+e− annihilation into hadrons. Our measurements yields: 0.026 ± 0.008 (stat.) ± 0.009 (syst.) Ξ − , Ξ − per hadronic event at W ∼ 34 GeV. Using our previous measurements of Λ, Λ and p, p production we obtain the relative yields (Ξ − , Ξ − /(Λ, Λ = 0.087 ± 0.03 ( stat. ) ± 0.03 ( syst. ) and (Ξ − , Ξ − /( p , p = 0.033 ± 0.011 ( stat. ) ± 0.011 ( syst. ) .

Abstract

Results onK0 and Λ production ine+e− annihilation at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV are presented. The shape of theK0 and Λ differential cross sections are very similar to each other and to those of π±,K± and\(p(\bar p)\). Scaling violations are observed forK0 production. We obtain a value for the probability to produce strange quark-antiquark pairs relative to that to produce up or down quark-antiquark pairs of 0.35±0.02±0.05. The value ofRh=σ(e+e-→hX)/σµµ is shown to rise steadily with c.m. energy for all particle species. At 34 GeV we find 1.48±0.05K0 and 0.31±0.03 Λ per event. We have searched for possible Λ polarization. The production ofK0's and Λ's in jets is examined as a function ofpT2 and rapidity and compared to that of all charged particles; the yields in two and three jets are also investigated. Results are presented from events with two baryons\((\Lambda ,\bar \Lambda ,por\bar p)\) observed.

Abstract

Production of the F meson by e + e − annihilation at high energies has been obsrved in the ϕπ final state with a mass of 1.975 ± 0.009 ± 0.010 GeV and a width consistent with the mass resolution. The yield of F production times branching ratio relative to μ pair production is R F ( x ⩾ 0.3) B (F ± → ϕπ ± ) = 0.061 ± 0.012 ± 0.018.

Abstract

We have determined the D0 lifetime from reconstructed vertices of D0 mesons produced in e+e- annihilations at an average center of mass energy of 42.2 GeV. From fifteen events the D0 lifetime was determined to be (4.3-1.4+2.0±0.8)×10-13s. © 1986 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

An analysis of the production ofKS0KS0 andK±Ks0π∓ by two quasi-real photons is presented. The cross section forγγ→K0\(\overline {K^0 } \), which is given for the γγ invariant mass range fromK\(\bar K\) threshold to 2.5 GeV, is dominated by thef′(1525) resonance and an enhancement near theK\(\bar K\) threshold. Upper limits on the product of the two-photon width times the branching ratio intoK\(\bar K\) pairs are given forΘ(1700),h(2030), and ξ(2220). For exclusive two-photon production ofK±Ks0π∓ no significant signal was observed. Upper limits are given on the cross section ofγγ→K+\(\overline {K^0 } \)π− orK−K0π+ between 1.4 and 3.2 GeV and on the product of the γγ width times the branching ratio into theK\(\bar K\)π final states for theηc(2980) and the ι(1440), yieldingΓ(γγ)→i(1440))·BR(i(1440)→K\(\bar K\)π

Abstract

The inclusive production of π± and K± mesons and of protons and antiprotons in e+e- annihilation has been measured at c.m. energies of W=14, 22 and 34GeV. Using time of flight measurements and Cerenkov counters the full momentum range has been covered. Differential cross sections and total particle yields are given. At particle momenta of 0.4 GeV/c more than 90% of the charged hadrons are pions. With increasing momentum the fraction of pions among the charged hadrons decreases. At W=34 GeV and a momentum of 5 GeV/c the particle fractions are approximately π±:K±:p, {Mathematical expression}. On average an event at W=34 GeV contains 10.3±0.4π±, 2.0±0.2 K± and 0.8±0.1 p, {Mathematical expression}. In addition, we present results on baryon correlations using a sample of events where two or more protons and/or antiprotons are observed in the final state. © 1983 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

Vector meson production is studied in the reaction γγ→K+K-π+π-. A clear Φ(1020) signal is seen in the K+K- mass distribution and a K*0 (890) signal is visible in the K±π∓ one. Both do not seem to be strongly correlated with quasi two body final states. Cross sections for the processes γγ→K+K-π+π-, γγ→Φπ+π-, γγ→K+0K±π∓ and upper limits for the production of Φp, ΦΦ and K*0 {Mathematical expression} are given as function of the invariant γγ mass. © 1986 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

We have studied the correlations between charged particles produced in e+e- annihilations into hadrons at c.m. energies between 29 and 37 GeV. We have analysed the correlations between the charged multiplicities of the jets and the two particle rapidity and charge correlations. No evidence for correlations between the multiplicities of the two jets is found. Two particle short range rapidity and charge correlations are observed, indicating that particles cluster in rapidity and that their charges compensate locally. An extensive study of these correlation effects by QCD Monte Carlo calculations was performed. Evidence for charge correlations due to Bose-Einstein statistics is also observed. © 1985 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

We have measured the cross sections for e+e− → e+e−, e+e− → μ+μ−, e+e− → γγ and e+e− → hadrons in an energy scan at center of mass energies between 39.79 and 46.72 GeV in 30 MeV steps. New spinless bosons, whose existence has been postulated as a possible means to explain the anomalously large radiative width of the Z0 found at the CERN SPS p p collider, are ruled out in the scan region. The data are used to set limits on the couplings to lepton, photon and quark pairs of bosons with masses above 46.72 GeV.

Abstract

The production of prompt muons in e+e- annihilation has been studied at centre of mass energies near 34.5 GeV. The measured semi-muonic branching ratios of b and c quarks are B(b»Xμv) =0.117±0.028±0.01 and B(c→Xμv)=0.082 ±0.012a-0.01+0.02. The fragmentation functions of heavy quarks are hard, =0.85a-0.12-0.07+0.10+0.02 and =0.77a-0.07-0.11+0.05+0.03. Limits have been set on flavour changing neutral current decays:B(b→Xμ+μ-)
