1. Production of Light Neutral Mesons in Ultrarelativistic Cu + Au and U + U Collisions in the Region of Mean Velocities

Abstract

Results are presented from measuring nuclear modification factors RAA of the π0, η, KS, and ω mesons produced in systems of Cu + Au and U + U collisions at cms energies of $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} $$ = 200 and 192 GeV, respectively, in the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The RAA values are found not to depend on the type of neutral meson and to vary in the ~0.4–0.6 and ~0.2–0.3 intervals for central Cu + Au and U + U collisions, respectively. The mean RAA values for different collision systems (Au + Au, Cu + Cu, Cu + Au, and U + U) are found to coincide within the measuring errors when estimated at comparable values of collision energy $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} $$ , and of the number of nucleons participating in a nucleus–nucleus collision, Npart.

Abstract

A hydrodynamic approach with a nonequilibrium equation of state is used to describe collisions between heavy ions with medium energies. The double differential cross sections for the production of subthreshold $${{\pi }^{0}}$$ mesons and $${{\pi }^{ + }}$$ mesons during collisions between various nuclei are calculated to develop this approach with the inclusion of nuclear viscosity effects. They are in good agreement with the available experimental data.

3. The status of theoretical L-shell x-ray production cross sections by protons based on their revised universal empirical fit

Abstract

The present status of theoretical L-shell x-ray production cross sections is gauged by an updated and revised fit to 5771 measurements in elements ranging from 24Cr to 95Am in ionization by 0.035 to 1000 MeV protons. Both the theory and the fit are cast with a single scaling variable v1/v2L, which is the ratio of proton velocity to the orbital velocity of the L-shell electron. A review of possible theories shows that the ECUSAR theory extended to relativistic protons provides for the most comprehensive choice for comparison with empirical fit to the compiled data. Both the fit and the theory are in excellent agreement with the compiled data except for cross sections reported at v1/v2L

4. Significantly improved estimates of neutron capture cross sections relevant to the r process

Abstract

Background: The $r$ process is thought to be a dominant mechanism for the production of medium mass and heavy nuclei. Despite extensive study, neither the process nor its site, and, consequently, the origin of these elements, is well understood. One of the principal reasons is the lack of adequate knowledge of neutron capture cross sections in neutron-rich nuclei, especially up to a few hundred keV. Existing statistical model calculations differ widely and are unreliable more than a few nucleons beyond stability.Purpose: To provide a new, more reliable empirical method to estimate neutron capture cross sections.Method: To use an entirely empirical approach by exploiting a newly discovered correlation between two-neutron separation energies and neutron capture cross sections.Results: It is shown that there is a compact correlation between neutron capture cross sections and ${S}_{2n}$ for ${S}_{2n}$ values from 10 to 16 MeV, encompassing nuclei in five mass regions comprising seven classes of nuclei from $A\ensuremath{\approx}110$ through the actinides over Maxwellian energy distributions from $kT=5$ to 100 keV. As a consequence, many unknown cross sections can be predicted by interpolation, with accuracies on the order of $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}25%$. In other cases, the cross sections can still be predicted with greatly improved accuracy compared to current models. Finally, it is shown that, in very neutron-rich nuclei, measurements of ${S}_{2n}$ can replace more difficult or impossible neutron capture measurements to estimate $r$-process abundances.Conclusions: A new approach to estimate neutron capture cross section allows much improved predictions of these key ingredients into $r$-process calculations, perhaps providing an enhanced ability to model this process and to better define its site(s).

Abstract

We analyze all available experimental data on the $\nu_\mu$ and $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ total and differential cross sections of charged-current single pion production through the decay of intermediate nucleon and baryon resonances measured on hydrogen and deuterium targets in the accelerator experiments at ANL, BNL, FNAL, and CERN. These data are used to determine the current "resonance" axial-vector mass of the nucleon and to fine-tune the nonresonance non-interfering background contribution which described within the Rein-Sehgal approach. For this analysis, we revise the phenomenological model and the experimental dataset for the fits, modify the method of likelihood analysis compared to the previous study. The obtained model parameters coming in combination with a revised strategy for the normalization of the BW distributions are slightly different from the values used by default., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

6. Pion production and absorption in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract

Based on the isospin dependent transport model IBUU, the pion production and its absorption are thoroughly studied in the central collision of $Au+Au$ at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon. It is found that the pions are firstly produced by the hard $\Delta$ decay at the average density around $1.75\rho_{0}$, whereas about 18\% of them are absorbed absolutely in the subsequent inelastic collisions. For the free pions observed, more than half of them have been scattered for one or more times before they are free from matter. And the more scattering numbers of pions, the higher the momentum they possess. These pions, due to longer time of their existence in high density nuclear matter, carry more information about the symmetry energy of the nuclear matter at high densities., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

One of the main neutron sources for the astrophysical s process is the reaction ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O, taking place in thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars at temperatures around 90 MK. To model the nucleosynthesis during this process the reaction cross section needs to be known in the 150-230 keV energy window (Gamow peak). At these sub-Coulomb energies, cross section direct measurements are severely affected by the low event rate, making us rely on input from indirect methods and extrapolations from higher-energy direct data. This leads to an uncertainty in the cross section at the relevant energies too high to reliably constrain the nuclear physics input to s-process calculations. We present the results from a new deep-underground measurement of ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O, covering the energy range 230-300 keV, with drastically reduced uncertainties over previous measurements and for the first time providing data directly inside the s-process Gamow peak. Selected stellar models have been computed to estimate the impact of our revised reaction rate. For stars of nearly solar composition, we find sizeable variations of some isotopes, whose production is influenced by the activation of close-by branching points that are sensitive to the neutron density, in particular, the two radioactive nuclei ^{60}Fe and ^{205}Pb, as well as ^{152}Gd.

8. Deuteron production in relativistic heavy ion collisions via stochastic multiparticle reactions

Abstract

Physical review / C 104(3), 034908 (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevC.104.034908, We study the deuteron production via the deuteron pion and nucleon catalysis reactions, ��pn ��� ��d and Npn ��� Nd, by employing stochastic multi-particle reactions in the hadronic transport approach SMASH for the first time. This is an improvement compared to previous studies, which introduced an artificial fake resonance d��� to simulate these 3 ��� 2 reactions as a chain of 2 ��� 2 reactions. The derivation of the stochastic criterion for multi-particle reactions is presented in a comprehensive fashion and its implementation is tested against an analytic expression for the scattering rate and the equilibrating particle yields in box calculations. We then study Au + Au collisions at ���sNN = 7.7 GeV, where we find that multi-particle collisions substantially reduce the time required for deuterons to reach partial chemical equilibrium with nucleons. Subsequently, the final yield of d is practically independent from the number of d at particlization, confirming the results of previous studies. The mean transverse momentum and the integrated elliptic flow as a function of centrality are rather insensitive to the exact realization of the 2 ��� 3 reactions., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

9. Inclusive breakup cross sections in reactions induced by the nuclides He6 and Li6,7 in the two-body cluster model

Abstract

Calculations of inclusive $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particle production are performed to interpret reaction experimental data induced by the two-neutron halo $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and the isotopes $^{6,7}\mathrm{Li}$ on different target nuclei. We have implemented the zero-range post-form distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) to compute the elastic and nonelastic breakup cross sections. Integrated cross sections, angular distributions, and spectra are presented. Projectiles are approximated as two-body clusters, namely $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ as $\ensuremath{\alpha}+\text{dineutron}$ and $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ ($^{7}\mathrm{Li}$) are interpreted as $\ensuremath{\alpha}+\text{deuteron}$ (triton). The S\~ao Paulo optical potential is employed in the calculation of the distorted wave functions for the incident channels, while standard phenomenological interactions are taken for the fragment-target interactions. Calculations for $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ furnish a good description of the data, while the reaction involving $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ is found to be more complicated, where interpretation of the data must still be considered incomplete. The present analysis identifies an overall large contribution from inclusive breakup emission for all the cases studied.

Abstract

The first measurement of the dependence of $\gamma\gamma \to \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ production on the multiplicity of neutrons emitted very close to the beam direction in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is reported. Data for lead-lead interactions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 1.5 nb$^{-1}$, were collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The azimuthal correlations between the two muons in the invariant mass region 8 $\lt m_{\mu\mu} \lt$ 60 GeV are extracted for events including zero, one, or at least two neutrons detected in the forward pseudorapidity range $|\eta| \lt$ 8.3. The back-to-back correlation structure from leading-order photon-photon scattering is found to be significantly broader for events with a larger number of emitted neutrons from each nucleus, corresponding to interactions with a smaller impact parameter. This observation provides a data-driven demonstration that the average transverse momentum of photons emitted from relativistic heavy ions has an impact parameter dependence. These results provide new constraints on models of photon-induced interactions in ultraperipheral collisions. They also provide a baseline to search for possible final-state effects on lepton pairs caused by traversing a quark-gluon plasma produced in hadronic heavy ion collisions.

11. $J/\psi$ production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 54.4$ GeV

Abstract

In this contribution, we present the measurements of inclusive $J/\psi$ production at midrapidity ($\left|y\right|$ < 1.0) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 54.4$ GeV by the STAR experiment. The dependences of nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm{AA}}$) on centrality and transverse momentum are measured with improved precision compared to previous measurements at 39 and 62.4 GeV. Combining newly measured $R_{\rm{AA}}$ of $J/\psi$ at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 54.4$ GeV and previous results at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies, no significant energy dependence of $R_{\rm{AA}}$ is found within uncertainties up to 200 GeV. The comparision to model calculations is presented and its physical implications are discussed.

12. Possibilities for synthesis of new transfermium isotopes in multinucleon transfer reactions

Abstract

Multinucleon transfer mechanisms near barrier collisions between very heavy nuclei are investigated in the framework of the improved dinuclear system model by considering the influence of orientation effects combined with statistical model code gemini++. Several transfer reactions for different actinide targets ($^{238}\mathrm{U},^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$, and $^{249}\mathrm{Cf}$) are studied in detail. One notices that the isotopic distributions of the above-target products decrease drastically by a factor of 10 per proton, which is moved from projectile to target. However, the calculated and measured results show that the larger production cross sections above targetlike fragments can be produced by using the heaviest available target. The predicted cross sections and excitation functions of the new transfermium isotopes may be useful for future experiments.

Abstract

In these proceedings, we present the analyses of single electrons from semileptonic decays of open heavy flavor hadrons at mid-rapidity in p+p and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. The data for Au+Au collisions were taken with the Heavy Flavor Tracker which enables a topological separation of electrons originating from bottom- and charm-hadron decays. We report results on the fraction of bottom-decayed electrons as a function of transverse momentum for Au+Au collisions from the STAR experiment with significantly improved precision compared to previous measurements. At the same time, improved measurements of nuclear modification factors ($R_{\rm AA}$) of bottom- and charm-decayed electrons and a new measurement of the double ratio of $R_{\rm CP}$ between bottom- and charm-decayed electrons are also be presented.

Abstract

Quarkonia are excellent probes for studying the properties of quark-gluon plasma formed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. In order to fully understand the observed suppression of quarkonium production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV, it is essential to understand the contribution from the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects on the quarkonium production. Collisions of p+Au at the same energy can be used to study the CNM effects since these effects are expected to be dominant in such systems. We present the measurements of inclusive J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ production modification in p+Au collisions (the nuclear modification factor $R_{\mathrm{pAu}}$) at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV. The results are extracted from data recorded by the STAR experiment in 2015 using the di-electron decay channel of the quarkonia. 16. Cross section measurements of proton capture reactions on Sr isotopes for astrophysics applications

Abstract

Background: Abundance calculations of a certain class of proton-rich isotopes, known as $p$ nuclei, require knowledge of the cross sections of thousands of nuclear reactions entering a reaction network. As a result, the solution of the latter relies on the predictions of the Hauser-Feshbach (HF) theory and, hence, on the reliability of the models describing the nuclear parameters entering the HF calculations, notably the optical model potential (OMP), the nuclear level density (NLD) and the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength function ($\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$).Purpose: The present work reports on a systematic study of proton capture reactions on Sr isotopes at energies relevant to the $p$ process which is responsible for the production of the $p$ nuclei at explosive stellar sites. The purpose of the work reported here is to perform a validity test of the different OMP, NLD, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$ models through extensive and detailed comparisons between HF calculations and experimental cross section data. This test is necessary to understand the origin of discrepancies between the $p$-nuclei abundances observed in the solar system and those predicted by the different astrophysical models, known as $p$-process models, aiming at describing the nucleosynthesis of the $p$ isotopes.Method: Cross sections were determined from $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-angular distribution measurements and from angle-integrated $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ spectra taken with the $4\ensuremath{\pi}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$-summing technique. Cross-section data and the resulting astrophysical $S$ factors were compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations obtained with the latest version 1.95 of the nuclear reaction code talys using combinations of global semi-microscopic and phenomenological models of optical potentials (OMPs), nuclear level densities (NLDs), and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray strength functions ($\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SFs}$).Results: Total cross sections as well as cross sections to the ground and metastable states were determined for the reactions $^{86}\mathrm{Sr}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{87}\mathrm{Y}$, $^{87}\mathrm{Sr}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{88}\mathrm{Y}$, and $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})^{89}\mathrm{Y}$ at incident proton-beam energies from 2.5 to 3.6, 2 to 5, and 1.5 to 5 MeV, respectively.Conclusions: The experimental data reported in the present work are in very good agreement with the talys 1.95 calculations obtained with the default combination of OMP, NLD, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$ models. This combination is based on purely phenomenological models. A semimicroscopic proton-nucleus optical model potential was optimized at low energies leading to an equally good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations based solely on combinations of fully semimicroscopic models of OMP, NLD, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{SF}$. Our results highlight the need for a continued effort on the systematic study of proton-capture reactions to reduce the range of uncertainties arising from global nuclear models for as wide a range of relevant nuclei as possible. In this regard, new ($p,\ensuremath{\gamma}$) data at the lowest possible energies below the opening of the neutron channel are of key importance to improve global proton-nucleus optical model potentials.

Abstract

We describe pair-production models of spin-0 and spin-1/2 magnetic monopoles and high-electric-charge objects in proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions, considering both the Drell-Yan and the photon-fusion processes. In particular, we extend the Drell-Yan production model of spin-1/2 high-electric-charge objects to include $Z^0$-boson exchange for proton-proton collisions. Furthermore, we explore spin-1/2 and, for the first time, spin-0 production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. With matrix element calculations and equivalent photon fluxes implemented in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, we present leading-order production cross sections of these mechanisms in $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV proton-proton collisions and $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}} = 5.5$ TeV ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at the LHC. While the mass range accessible in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions is much lower than that in proton-proton collisions, we find that the theoretical production cross sections are significantly enhanced in the former for masses below 82 GeV., 15 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, submitted to J. Abstract

The longitude development of the muonic component in the extensive air shower can help to determine mass composition of cosmic rays. By using the timing information of muons, the production positions of muons can be reconstructed .$X_{max}^{\mu}$ which is the position with muon production reaching maximum is sensitive to the mass composition of cosmic rays. In this paper, the reconstruction of muon’s geometrical production heights along the shower axis by using their timing information are studied for cosmic rays with energies from 1PeV to 10 PeV by CORSIKA data. According to our analysis, the resolution of $X_{max}^{\mu}$ is 500 $g/cm^2$ with a resolution about 32 $g/cm^2$ for showers initiated by protons with energy 10 PeV ,and zenith angle θ= 45°.

Abstract

The rare event search experiments using germanium detectors are performed in the underground laboratories to prevent cosmic rays. However, the cosmogenic activation of the cupreous detector components on the ground will generate long half-life radioisotopes and contribute continually to the expected background level. We present a study on the cosmogenic activation of copper after 504 days of exposure at an altitude of 2469.4 m outside the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). The specific activities of the cosmogenic nuclides produced in the copper bricks were measured using a low background germanium gamma-ray spectrometer at CJPL. The production rates at sea level, in units of nuclei/kg/day, are 18.6 \pm 2.0 for Mn-54, 9.9 \pm 1.3 for Co-56, 48.3 \pm 5.5 for Co-57, 51.8 \pm 2.5 for Co-58 and 39.7 \pm 5.7 for Co-60, respectively. Given the expected exposure history of the germanium detectors, a Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to assess the cosmogenic background contributions of the detectors' cupreous components., 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Nuclear modification factor RAA of π0 mesons produced in 3HeAu collisions at a cms energy of $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} $$ = 200 GeV is extracted from data of the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. The mean RAA value for π0 mesons with pT > 8 GeV/c is found to be close to 0.8 for central 3He + Au collisions.

Abstract

A phenomenon of abnormally weak absorption of very-high-energy cosmic-ray hadrons in lead is discussed. This phenomenon was first observed in Tien-Shan high-altitude experiments in hadronic cores of extensive air showers and has encouraged to introduce the hypothesis of a so-called long-flying or penetrating cosmic-ray component. A similar effect was detected later with deep uniform lead X-ray emulsion chambers (XREC) at the Pamirs. Experiments, which are sensitive to the production of charmed hadrons in the forward kinematic region (xLab ≳ 0.1), have been carried out at the Tien-Shan and Pamirs with exposing two-storey XRECs with large air gaps to prove explanation of the experimental results with high charm production cross section $${\sigma _{pp \to c\bar c}} \sim 8$$ at xLab ≳ 0.1 at ⟨ELab⟩ ∼ 75 TeV. This $${\sigma _{pp \to c\bar c}}$$ value makes it possible to reproduce the experimental hadron-absorption curve observed with XRECs, including curve’s bending at a depth of ∼70 c.u.

Abstract

Results of a new analysis of negative particle yields in Au + Au collisions obtained by the STAR Collaboration in the first phase of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) program in the framework of $$z$$ -scaling approach are presented. The spectra were measured over a wide range of collision energy $$\sqrt {{{s}_{{NN}}}} = 7.7 - 200$$ GeV and transverse momentum of produced particles for different centralities at $$\left| \eta \right| < 0.5.$$ The concept of the $$z$$ -scaling based on self-similarity, locality, and fractality of hadron interactions at a constituent level is verified. The constituent energy loss as a function of energy and centrality of collision and transverse momentum of inclusive particle was estimated.

Abstract

We report in these proceedings on the measurements of collision centrality and transverse momentum ( p T ) dependences of the Λ c ± production in Au+Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV , using the STAR Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT). The Λ c ± signal significance is greatly improved with the addition of the high-statistics data set collected in 2016 and the use of a supervised machine learning method for topological reconstruction of the decay vertices. The measured Λ c ± / D 0 ratio shows a significant enhancement compared to the PYTHIA prediction for p+p collisions, across the measured p T range. We also report on the updated measurements of D 0 nuclear modification factors R AA and R CP using the 2014 data with the HFT. The measured D 0 R AA in central collisions is lower than unity across the p T interval of the measurement. The D 0 yields show strong suppression at high p T (> 6 GeV/c) in central collisions, consistent with that of light flavor hadrons. The c c ‾ production cross section per binary nucleon collision at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV is extracted based on the various charm hadron measurements by STAR. It is observed that while the charm hadrochemistry is significantly modified in Au+Au collisions compared to p+p collisions, the c c ‾ production cross section at midrapidity remains consistent between Au+Au and p+p collisions.

Coherent production of J/ψ mesons is studied in lead-lead collision data at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 10μb−1. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon final state, where the muons are detected within the pseudorapidity region 2.0

27. A Possible Observation of Sigma-nn Continuum Structures and A Bound Sigma-NN State Using the (e, e 'K+) Reaction

Abstract

The E12-17-003 $(e, e'K^+)$ experiment was carried out in the experimental Hall A facility of Jefferson Lab in November 2018. The experiment aimed at providing the experimental data for the unknown Lambda-n interaction by measuring the bound state or the resonance state as indicated by the HypHI experiment. The so obtained $\Lambda$-n interaction was assumed to solve the existing charge symmetry breaking problem in the case of Lambda-N interaction. The experiment used Hall A high resolution spectrometers (both left and right spectrometers) positioned symmetrically at constant angle 13.2$\degree$ each. A 25 cm long aluminum cylinder filled with $^3$H gas was used as a production target. The major calibration data were taken with the H target contained in an identical aluminum cylinder. The electroproduction of $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma^0$ via p$(e, e'K^+){\Lambda}, \Sigma^0$ reactions was used to calibrate the absolute energy scale with the known masses of the $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma^0$. Then by using the $(e, e'K^+)$ reaction, two possible ${\Lambda}$nn resonance states and one ${\Sigma}NN$ bound state were observed. The observed states have the energy resolution about 1.6 MeV (FWHM), however, great r statistics are required to solidly confirm the observed states. The A = 3 and 4 $\Sigma$ bound more states have been predicted long ago but only the A = 4 $\Sigma$ hypernucleus, that is ${4}\atop{\Sigma}$He, was found in the $(K^-,{\pi}^-)$ reaction. A careful Monte Carlo study was conducted to study the A (nuclear mass number) dependence on the missing mass resolution by using the identical experimental conditions. The simulated and experimentally obtained $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma^0$ channels agreed within 100 keV in $\sigma$, where $\sigma$ is the standard deviation. The intrinsic missing mass resolution of A = 3 (${3}\atop{\Sigma}$n) resonance was predicted about $\sigma$ = 0.67 MeV with a natural width of about 0.6 MeV. However, due to the low statistics the precision does not permit sufficient constrain on the determination of the $\Lambda$n interaction. The reason of having such low statistics is due to the use of unoptimized Hall A system which was definitely feasible but not ideal for this experiment. In addition, the cross section was found to be much smaller than expected.

Abstract

The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in central$${}^{40}$$ 40 Ar+$${}^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150$$A\,\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!\textit{c}$$ A Ge V / c . Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Abstract

In the present paper a detailed investigation of the multiplicity distribution of the produced shower particles in the backward hemisphere ( $$\theta _{\mathrm {Lab}} \ge 90^{\circ }$$ ) in nuclear emulsion track detector has been carried out. The present study involves interactions of $$^{\mathrm {16}}\hbox {O}$$ and $$^{\mathrm {32}}\hbox {S}$$ projectiles with CNO, AgBr and composite emulsion target at 4.5 AGeV/c. We have compared our results with the results obtained from the analysis of modified Fritiof model. Present study reveals that the production of single shower particle is the most dominant production mode of shower particles in the backward direction. This probability increases with the increase of target mass. The percentage of events having backward shower particles remains almost independent of the projectile beam. But it increases with the increase of target size. Average multiplicity of the shower particles in the backward direction reflects a weaker dependence on the mass number of the projectile beam. Multiplicity distribution of backward shower particles for both experimental and modified Fritiof model can be described by an expression $$\mathrm {P}_{\mathrm {N}} = {\mathrm {P}_{\mathrm {s}}\mathrm {N}_{\mathrm {B}}}^{-{\uplambda }_{\mathrm {B}}}$$ . The fitting parameter $${\uplambda }_{\mathrm {B}}$$ decreases as the target size increases. The decay constant has lower value for the heavier projectile. Higher order multiplicity moments and scaled variance of multiplicity distribution for the backward shower particles showed strong target dependence. Multiplicity distributions of the backward shower particles violate KNO scaling law. Modified Fritiof model failed to reproduce the various features of the multiplicity distribution.

Abstract

Recent astronomical data have provided the primordial deuterium abundance with percent precision. As a result, big bang nucleosynthesis may provide a constraint on the universal baryon to photon ratio that is as precise as, but independent from, analyses of the cosmic microwave background. However, such a constraint requires that the nuclear reaction rates governing the production and destruction of primordial deuterium are sufficiently well known. Here, a new measurement of the $^{2}\mathrm{H}{(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ cross-section is reported. This nuclear reaction dominates the error on the predicted big bang deuterium abundance. A proton beam of 400--1650 keV beam energy was incident on solid titanium deuteride targets, and the emitted $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays were detected in two high-purity germanium detectors at angles of ${55}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ and ${90}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, respectively. The deuterium content of the targets has been obtained in situ by the $^{2}\mathrm{H}(^{3}\mathrm{He},p)^{4}\mathrm{He}$ reaction and offline using the elastic recoil detection method. The astrophysical $S$ factor has been determined at center of mass energies between 265 and 1094 keV, addressing the uppermost part of the relevant energy range for big bang nucleosynthesis and complementary to ongoing work at lower energies. The new data support a higher $S$ factor at big bang temperatures than previously assumed, reducing the predicted deuterium abundance.

Abstract

The production of heavy-mass elements due to the rapid neutron-capture mechanism ([Formula: see text]-process) is associated with astrophysical scenarios, such as supernovae and neutron-star mergers. In the [Formula: see text]-process the capture of neutrons is followed by [Formula: see text]-decays until nuclear stability is reached. A key element in the chain of nuclear weak-decays leading to the production of isotopes may be the change of the parameters controlling the neutrino sector, due to the mixing of active and sterile species. In this work, we have addressed this question and calculated [Formula: see text]-decay rates for the nuclei involved in the [Formula: see text]-process chains as a function of the neutrino mixing parameters. These rates are then used in the calculation of the abundance of the heavy elements produced in core-collapse supernova and in neutron-star mergers, starting from different initial mass-fraction distributions. The analysis shows that the core-collapse supernova environment contributes with approximately [Formula: see text] of the total heavy nuclei abundance while the neutron-star merger contributes with about [Formula: see text] of it. Using available experimental data we have performed a statistical analysis to set limits on the active-sterile neutrino mixing angle and found a best-fit value [Formula: see text], a value comparable with those found in other studies reported in the literature.

Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudorapidity region 2.7lηl3.8. Results are presented for π0s observed in the STAR forward meson spectrometer electromagnetic calorimeter in narrow Feynman x (xF) and transverse momentum (pT) bins, spanning the range 0.172.5 GeV/c. It is further observed that the value of AN is significantly larger for events with a large-pT isolated π0 than for events with a nonisolated π0 accompanied by additional jetlike fragments. The nuclear dependence r(A) is similar for isolated and nonisolated π0 events.

Abstract

In this paper, we calculate the cross sections for proton-induced reactions producing short-lived radionuclides like $^{7,10}\mathrm{Be}$, $^{26}\mathrm{Al}$, $^{53,54}\mathrm{Mn}$, etc., with the Li\`ege intranuclear cascade model (incl$++$). The results show that the incl model, when coupled with the proper deexcitation model, gives satisfactory results for most of the considered reactions. Generally, results for reactions with $(\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}N\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}Z)$ equal to 0 or 1 are more likely to precisely match experimental data than those for reactions with larger or smaller $|\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}N\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}Z|$. Our results can provide useful references for both the users and developers of incl and deexcitation models.

Abstract

We analyze recent AMS-02 comic-ray measurements of Lithium, Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen. The emphasis of the analysis is on systematic uncertainties related to propagation and nuclear cross sections. To investigate the uncertainties in the propagation scenario, we consider five different frameworks, differing with respect to the inclusion of a diffusion break at a few GV, the presence of reacceleration, and the presence of a break in the injection spectra of primaries. For each framework we fit the diffusion equations of cosmic rays and explore the parameter space with Monte Carlo methods. At the same time, the impact of the uncertainties in the nuclear production cross sections of secondaries is explicitly considered and included in the fit through the use of nuisance parameters. We find that all the considered frameworks are able to provide a good fit. In particular, two competing scenarios, one including a break in diffusion but no reacceleration and the other with reacceleration but no break in diffusion are both allowed. The inclusion of cross-section uncertainties is, however, crucial, to this result. Thus, at the moment, these uncertainties represent a fundamental systematic preventing a deeper understanding of the properties of CR propagation. We find, nonetheless, that the slope of diffusion at intermediate rigidities is robustly constrained in the range $\delta\simeq0.45-0.5$ in models without convection, or $\delta\simeq0.4-0.5$ if convection is included in the fit. Furthermore, we find that the use of the AMS-02 Beryllium data provides a lower limit on the vertical size of the Galactic propagation halo of $z_\mathrm{h}\gtrsim3$ kpc., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures; v2: updated to the published version, results are unchanged

Abstract

We analyse various flow coefficients of anisotropic momentum distribution of final state particles in mid-central ($b$ $=$ 5--9 $fm$) Au + Au collisions in the beam energy range $\rm E_{\rm Lab}$ $=$ $1A -158A$ GeV. Different variants of the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model, namely the pure transport (cascade) mode and the hybrid mode, are employed for this investigation. In the hybrid UrQMD model, the ideal hydrodynamical evolution is integrated with the pure transport calculation for description of the evolution of the fireball. We opt for the different available equations of state (EoS) replicating the hadronic as well as partonic degrees of freedom together with possible phase transitions, viz. hadron gas, chiral + deconfinement EoS and bag model EoS, to investigate their effect on the properties of the final state particles. We also attempt to gain insights about the dynamics of the medium by studying different features of particle production such as particle ratios and net-proton rapidity distribution. The results and conclusions drawn here would be useful to understand the response of various observables to the underlying physics of the model as well as to make comparisons with the upcoming measurements of the future experiments at Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) and Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA)., 14 pages, 12 figures

The European physical journal / A 57(2), 55 (2021). doi:10.1140/epja/s10050-020-00307-5, The deuteron coalescence parameter $B_2$ in proton+proton and nucleus+nucleus collisions in the energy range of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 900 - 7000 GeV for proton+proton and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2 - 2760 GeV for nucleus+nucleus collisions is analyzed with the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) transport model, supplemented by an event-by-event phase space coalescence model for deuteron and anti-deuteron production. The results are compared to data by the E866, E877, PHENIX, STAR and ALICE experiments. The $B_2$ values are calculated from the final spectra of protons and deuterons. At lower energies, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\leq 20$ GeV, $B_2$ drops drastically with increasing energy. The calculations confirm that this is due to the increasing freeze-out volume reflected in $B_2\sim 1/V$. At higher energies, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\geq 20$ GeV, $B_2$ saturates at a constant level. This qualitative change and the vanishing of the volume suppression is shown to be due to the development of strong radial flow with increasing energy. We report on the measurement of the central exclusive production process $pp \ \rightarrow \ pXp$ in proton-proton collisions at RHIC with the STAR detector at $\sqrt{\mathrm{s}} = 510$ GeV. At this energy, this process is dominated by a double Pomeron exchange mechanism. The tracks of the centrally produced system $X$ were reconstructed in the central detector of STAR, the Time Projection Chamber and the Time of Flight systems, and were identified using the ionization energy loss and the time of flight method. The diffractively scattered protons, moving intact inside the RHIC beam pipe after the collision, were measured in the Roman Pots system allowing full control of the interaction's kinematics and verification of its exclusivity. 40. Exploring laser-driven neutron sources for neutron capture cascades and the production of neutron-rich isotopes

Abstract

The production of neutron-rich isotopes and the occurrence of neutron capture cascades via laser-driven (pulsed) neutron sources are investigated theoretically. The considered scenario involves the interaction of a laser-driven neutron beam with a target made of a single type of seed nuclide. We present a comprehensive study over $95$ seed nuclides in the range $3\le Z \le 100$ from $^7_3$Li to $^{255}_{100}$Fm. For each element, the heaviest sufficiently-long-lived (half life $> 1$ h) isotope whose data is available in the recent ENDF-B-VIII.0 neutron sublibrary is considered. We identify interesting seed nuclides with good performance in the production of neutron-rich isotopes where neutron capture cascades may occur. The effects of the neutron number per pulse, the neutron-target interaction size and the number of neutron pulses are also analyzed. Our results show the possibility of observing up to $4$ successive neutron capture events leading to neutron-rich isotopes with $4$ more neutrons than the original seed nuclide. This hints at new experimental possibilities to produce neutron-rich isotopes and simulate neutron capture nucleosynthesis in the laboratory. With several selected interesting seed nuclides in the region of the branching point of the $s$-process ($^{126}_{51}$Sb, $^{176}_{71}$Lu and $^{187}_{75}$Re) or the waiting point of the $r$-process (Lu, Re, Os, Tm, Ir and Au), we expect that laser-driven experiments can shed light on our understanding of nucleosynthesis., 23 pages, 8 figures, 1 table; discussions added; accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Activation cross sections of the $$^{\mathrm {nat}}\hbox {Rb (d,xn)}^{87\mathrm {m,85m,85g,83,82}}\hbox {Sr}$$ nat Rb (d,xn) 87 m , 85 m , 85 g , 83 , 82 Sr , $$^{\mathrm {nat}}\hbox {Rb(d,x)}^{\mathrm {86,84,83,82m}}\hbox {Rb}$$ nat Rb(d,x) 86 , 84 , 83 , 82 m Rb and $$^{\mathrm {nat}}\hbox {Rb(d,x)}^{85\mathrm {m}}\hbox {Kr}$$ nat Rb(d,x) 85 m Kr nuclear reactions have been measured for the first time through an activation method combining the stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma-ray spectrometry. The provided cross sections from the present investigation are all new, in such a way contribute to the completeness of the experimental database. The experimental cross sections were compared with the theoretical prediction in the TENDL-2019 TALYS based library and with our calculation using ALICE-D and EMPIRE-D model codes in order the improve their predictivity. Thick target production yields were calculated form the new cross sections for all investigated radioisotopes. Practical applications of the results are shortly discussed.

Abstract

Relativistic collisions of Xe\(+\)Xe at Large Hadron Collider give us an opportunity to study the properties of possible state of deconfined quarks and gluons, where the size of the produced system lies between the p\(+\)p and Pb\(+\)Pb collisions. In the present study, we have incorporated nuclear deformation in a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model to study the identified particle production and elliptic flow in Xe\(+\)Xe at \(\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.44\) TeV. In more comprehensive way, we have studied \(p_\mathrm{T}\)-differential and \(p_\mathrm{T}\)-integrated particle ratios to pions and kaons as a function of centrality and the number of constituent quark (\(n_q\)) and transverse mass (\(m_\mathrm{T}\)) scaling of elliptic flow. The effect of deformation on particle production has also been highlighted by comparing with non-deformation case. The \(p_\mathrm{T}\)-differential particle ratios show a strong dependence on centrality whereas \(p_\mathrm{T}\)-integrated ratios are almost independent of centrality.

Abstract

Using the EPOS3 model with UrQMD to describe the hadronic phase, we study the production of short-lived hadronic resonances and the modification of their yields and $p_{T}$ spectra in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. High-multiplicity p-Pb collisions exhibit similar behavior to mid-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies, and we find indications of a short-lived hadronic phase in p-Pb collisions that can modify resonance yields and $p_{T}$ spectra through scattering processes. The evolution of resonance production is investigated as a function of the system size, which is related to the lifetime of the hadronic phase, in order to study the onset of collective effects in p-Pb collisions. Abstract

The European physical journal / C 81(1), 73 (1-38) (2021). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-020-08733-x, The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) studies the onset of deconfinement in hadron matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ produced in the 20% most central$^7$Be+$^9$Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A ${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm $/$\pi ^\pm $ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm $ transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic p+p reactions. Abstract

International audience; Correlations and clustering are of great importance in the study of the Nuclear Equation of State. Information on these items/aspects can be obtained using heavy-ion reactions which are described by dynamical theories. We propose a dataset that will be useful for improving the description of light cluster production in transport model approaches. The dataset combines published and new data and is presented in a form that allows direct comparison of the experiment with theoretical predictions. The dataset is ranging in bombarding energy from 32 to 1930 A MeV. In constructing this dataset, we put in evidence the existence of a change in the light cluster production mechanism that corresponds to a peak in deuteron production.

Abstract

The first measurement of the production of pions, kaons, (anti-)protons and $\phi$ mesons at midrapidity in Xe-Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.44$ TeV is presented. Transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra and $p_{\rm T}$-integrated yields are extracted in several centrality intervals bridging from p-Pb to mid-central Pb-Pb collisions in terms of final-state multiplicity. The study of Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb collisions allows systems at similar charged-particle multiplicities but with different initial geometrical eccentricities to be investigated. A detailed comparison of the spectral shapes in the two systems reveals an opposite behaviour for radial and elliptic flow. In particular, this study shows that the radial flow does not depend on the colliding system when compared at similar charged-particle multiplicity. In terms of hadron chemistry, the previously observed smooth evolution of particle ratios with multiplicity from small to large collision systems is also found to hold in Xe-Xe. In addition, our results confirm that two remarkable features of particle production at LHC energies are also valid in the collision of medium-sized nuclei: the lower proton-to-pion ratio with respect to the thermal model expectations and the increase of the $\phi$-to-pion ratio with increasing final-state multiplicity., Comment: 27 pages, 6 captioned figures, 4 tables, authors from page 22, published version, figures at http://alice-publications.web.cern.ch/node/6758

Abstract

Double Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DDVCS) is the only experimental channel for the determination of the dependence of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) on both the average and the transferred momentum independently. The physics observables of the electron induced di-muon production reaction $\vv{e}^{\pm}p \to e^{\pm}p\mu^+\mu^-$ off unpolarized hydrogen are discussed. Their measurement with the high luminosity and large acceptance SoLID spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, using polarized and unpolarized positron and electron beams at 11 GeV is investigated. This experimental configuration is shown to provide unprecedented access to the GPDs with the determination of the real and imaginary parts of the Compton Form Factor ${\mathcal H}$ in an unexplored phase space, and to enable an exploratory investigation of higher twist effects., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed and an upper limit of $0.60 \times 10^{-2}$ is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV., 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We study the production and angular correlation of charm hadrons in hot and dense matter produced in high-energy nuclear–nuclear collisions within a multiphase transport model (AMPT). By triggering additional charm–anticharm quark pair production in the AMPT, the model describes the $$D^0$$ nuclear modification factor in the low and intermediate $$p_{{\rm T}}$$ regions in Au + Au collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}}=200$$ GeV reasonably well. Further exploration of the $$D^0$$ pair azimuthal angular correlation for different centralities shows clear evolution from low-multiplicity to high-multiplicity events, which is associated with the number of charm quark interactions with medium partons during AMPT transport.
