Abstract

The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University (MSU) is a user facility for rare-isotope beams, produced by projectile fragmentation at high energies and separated in-flight. ReA is a post-accelerator that accelerates 'stopped' rare-isotope beams, thermalized in a helium-gas cell, to several MeV/u for nuclear-physics experiments. ReA employs an electron-beam ion trap (EBIT) charge breeder to convert singly charged ions to highly charged ions before transport to a linear accelerator. The EBIT started on-line operation in the fall of 2015. This paper presents results of charge-breeding efficiency measurements obtained over the past two years with rare-isotope beams. Additionally, the time spread of rare-isotope ion pulses ejected from the EBIT has been increased to reduce the instantaneous rate delivered to users. Efficiencies in single charge states of more than 20% were obtained with 47K17+ and 34Ar15+. For 34Ar15+, the pulse width was spread in time up to ~50 ms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Dedicated ionization chamber was built and installed to measure the energy loss of very heavy nuclei at 2.7 MeV/u produced in fusion reactions in inverse kinematics (beam of 208Pb). After going through the ionization chamber, products of reactions on 12C, 18O targets are implanted in a Si detector. Their identification through their alpha decay chain is ambiguous when their half-life is short. After calibration with Pb and Th nuclei, the ionization chamber signal allowed us to resolve these ambiguities. In the search for rare super-heavy nuclei produced in fusion reactions in inverse or symmetric kinematics, such a chamber will provide direct information on the nuclear charge of each implanted nucleus., submitted to NIMA, 10 pages+4 figures, Latex, uses elsart.cls and grahpicx

Abstract

During the last years, the ECOS working group has been considering the construction of a new high-intensity accelerator of stable ion beams for the next Long-Range Plan of the nuclear physics community in Europe. The new facility (LINCE) will be a multi-user facility dedicated to ECOS science: fundamental physics, astrophysics, nuclear structure and reaction dynamics. Abstract

We performed an experiment to search for a signature of a long living component in the collision of 238U + 238U between 6.09 and 7.35A MeV. The experiment was performed at GANIL using the spectrometer VAMOS, tuned for observing reactions with kinematics similar to fusion-fission events. Theoretical calculations indicate that if a long living component would exist for this reaction, the most probable fission channel of such a giant system would be via the emission of quasi-lead nuclei. We detected events of such a category in the focal plane of VAMOS. Abstract

We investigated deep inelastic reactions in 238U + 238U collisions at 6.09, 6.49, 6.91, 7.1 and 7.35× A MeV at the VAMOS spectrometer (GANIL). A large transfer of neutrons and protons was observed at all beam energies. For a transfer of more than 10 nucleons the total kinetic energy of the detected fragments becomes independent of the beam energy and reaches values far below the Coulomb barrier for spherical fragments. This points to the formation of a di-nuclear system in the entrance channel which develops an elongated shape and a strong neck. For such reactions we expect an enhanced lifetime of the di-nuclear system which is significantly longer than the time scale for elastic and quasi-elastic reactions. Different theoretical approaches predict delay times of more than 5×10-21 s for a subset of our data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Energy integrated reaction cross-section measurements of around sixty neutron-rich nuclei covering the region of closed shells N = 20 and N = 28 were performed at intermediate energy (30-65 A . MeV) using direct method. In this experiment, silicon detectors were used as active targets. The reduced strong absorption radii, r02, for 19 new nuclei (27F, 27,30Ne, 33Na, 28, 34-35Mg, 36-38Al, 38-40Si, 41-42P, 42-44S and 45Cl) are deduced for the first time. An additional 60 radii, also measured in this experiment, are compared to results from literature. A new quadratic parametrization is proposed for the nuclear radius as a function of the isospin in the region of closed shells N = 8 and N = 28. According to this parametrization, the skin effect is well reproduced and anomalous behaviour on the radii are observed in 23N, 29Ne, 33Na, 35Mg, 44S, 45Cl and 45Ar nuclei. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Based on a multibeam high intensity driver (5mA of deuterons, 1mA of heavy ions) a detailed project study for Spiral2 was started in November 2002 in a large collaboration. Fission rates of up to 1013/s will be possible with standard density UC (2.3g/cm^3), and up to 1014/s with high density (11g/cm^3) UC. Fission may be induced either by neutrons from a converter, or with direct beams. The multibeam driver will allow other high intensity beams, with energies up to 14MeV/nucleon for A/ Q = 3. The radioactive ions will be accelerated by the existing CIME cyclotron, with energies of 1.7-25MeV/nucleon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
