1. Activation cross-section measurement of fast neutron-induced reactions in Al, Au, Bi, Co, F, Na, and Y.

Abstract

This paper describes cross-section measurements by means of the neutron activation method using an accelerator-driven fast neutron source at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Řež. It extends previous studies published in papers (Vrzalová et al. (2013); Chudoba et al. (2018)). A quasi-monoenergetic neutron source based on the p+Li(C) reaction was used to irradiate Al, Au, Bi, Co, NaF, and Y samples with neutrons at the energies of 17.5(10) MeV, 19.8(9) MeV and 27.5(7) MeV. Irradiated foils were analyzed by means of gamma-ray spectrometry and reaction yields were obtained. Cross sections of several fast neutron-induced reactions were determined on the basis of the measurement of neutron spectra and their corresponding reaction yields. The production cross sections of isomeric states were determined as well. This paper also describes the measurements of the positron emitters using annihilation gamma-ray spectrometry. The sources of uncertainties in the various parts of the experiment are discussed. Abstract

Continuous advances in nuclear physics make significant contributions to nuclear technology and provide significant advances in many related fields. The main reasons for this are understanding the structure and properties of the nucleus and developing physical theories of nuclear reactions. Knowing the cross-section of nuclear reactions used especially in the field of health and technology gives an idea about the possible results of the reaction. In some cases, it is not possible to experimentally find cross sections of nuclear reactions both in terms of cost and conditions. The reaction cross sections are calculated theoretically with various nuclear reaction codes. 131Cs has been used in cancer treatments in recent years due to its shorter halflife and higher energy compared to other radioisotopes used in cancer treatment. In this study, the excitation functions of 133Cs (γ,2n), 133Cs (p,x), 127I (α,γ) and 131Xe (p,n) reactions used to produce 131Cs radioisotope and whose experimental data are available in the EXFOR library were investigated. The compatible theoretical results obtained with the TALYS 1.95 nuclear code program and the experimental data obtained from the EXFOR library were compared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Analysis of neutronics benchmarks for the utilization of mixed oxide fuel in light water reactor using DRAGON code.

Abstract

Advances in reactor physics have led to the development of new computational technologies and upgraded cross-section libraries so as to produce an accurate approximation to the true solution for the problem. Thus it is necessary to revisit the benchmark problems with the advanced computational code system and upgraded cross-section libraries to see how far they are in agreement with the earlier reported values. Present study is one such analysis with the DRAGON code employing advanced self shielding models like USS and 172 energy group ‘JEFF3.1’ cross-section library in DRAGLIB format. Although DRAGON code has already demonstrated its capability for heavy water moderator systems, it is now tested for light water reactor (LWR) and fast reactor systems. As a part of validation of DRAGON for LWR, a VVER computational benchmark titled “Neutronics Benchmarks for the Utilization of Mixed-Oxide Fuel-Volume 3” submitted by the Russian Federation has been taken up. Presently, pincell and assembly calculations are carried out considering variation in fuel temperature (both fresh and spent), moderator temperatures and boron content in the moderator. Various parameters such as infinite neutron multiplication ( k ∞ ) factor, one group integrated flux, few group homogenized cross-sections (absorption, nu-fission) and reaction rates (absorption, nu-fission) of individual isotopic nuclides are calculated for different reactor states. Comparisons of results are made with the reported Monte Carlo (MCU) values of the benchmark. Maximum deviation of 1.8% in k ∞ is observed for variants with spent fuel and for the states with control rod whereas all the other results are in par with the results reported in the benchmark document. The few and multi-group macroscopic cross-sections and flux of all the nuclides also compare well with the benchmark results except for the 11 B macroscopic absorption cross section, which is further compared with the XNWLUP software. Inter-comparison of results with the generalized self-shielding model SHI of DRAGON code employing the traditional WIMSD formatted 172 group cross-section library has also been made to highlight the improvements made in computational schemes and cross-section library format. Abstract

A scenario of evolution of the shape of nucleons with increasing energy is described in the framework of extended parton model, which consistently takes into account the transverse motion of the partons. At the energy $E$ up to LHC, the nucleons have the form of a spheroid which expands as $\sqrt{\ln \!E}$ in the transverse directions and grows linearly in $E$ in the longitudinal direction. With a further increase in the energy a mode of correlated behavior of the partons is established, which stops the longitudinal growth. Simultaneously, the expansion in the transverse directions changes to $\ln \!E$, and a hollow mostly free of partons is formed inside the nucleons along the central axis in the direction of their motion. Abstract

The theranostic approach combines diagnostic and therapy towards personalised treatment for patients. Among the different possibilities, associating two radionuclides of the same element is appealing, one for imaging purpose and the other for therapy. Copper offers such a pair of radionuclides with 64Cu (T1/2=12.7 h) allowing PET imaging and 67Cu (T1/2=61.8 h) for targeted beta therapy. If for 64Cu the production route is well defined (a biomedical cyclotron delivering protons on a 64Ni target), this is not the case for 67Cu. Many production routes have been explored using neutrons, charged particles or photons. For charged particles, the main challenge relies on the limitation of 64Cu co-production, even if its real impact on the patient and staff radioprotection needs to be studied and clarified. Within this frame, we have measured 70Zn(d,x) production cross sections for 67Cu and its contaminants up to 30 MeV. Measurements were done using the well-known stacked foils technique on 97.5 % enriched 70Zn homemade electroplated targets. They complement at higher incident energies the only set of data available in nuclear databases. The maximum of the cross section is reached at 23 MeV. Its value, 30 mb, is twice higher than the one obtained with a proton irradiation. With deuterons below 26 MeV, 64Cu production is limited and directly connected to the enrichment of the target. Using a 26 MeV deuteron beam and an enriched 70Zn target, it is then possible to produce high purity 67Cu. Activity of 16.4 GBq can be obtained for 26 MeV and 80 µA beam interacting on a 576 µm thick 70Zn target during 40 hours. The achieved purity is comparable to that obtained using photoproduction. This production route can be of interest for future linear accelerators under development where mA deuteron beams can be available if adequate targetry is developed.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross-sectional reactions for 106,108,110,111,112,113,114,116Cd isotopes have been calculated with different level density models which are constant temperature Fermi gas (CTFG) model, back-shifted Fermi gas model, generalized superfluid model and Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov model by using TALYS 1.9 and EMPIRE 3.2 codes for incident neutron energies up to 250 keV. The obtained results have been analyzed with each level density model parameters existing in Reference Input Parameter Library (RIPL-3) and available experimental data. As an outcome, to obtain more precise and coherent calculations with the experimental values, level density model and its parameters have been determined. Also, hadronic interactions of low-energy neutrons have been investigated for a situation by using GEANT4. © 2019, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science.

Abstract

In the frame of a systematic study of activation cross sections of deuteron induced reactions, experimental cross section data were measured on Mn (monoisotopic Mn-55) up to 50MeV for the formation of Mn-56,Mn-54,Mn-52, V-48 and Cr-51 by using stacked-foil activation method and high resolution gamma spectrometry. The experimental data are compared with the earlier published data and with the results predicted by the ALICE-IPPE-D and EMPIRE-II-D theoretical codes, and with the data taken from the on-line TENDL-2017 library.

Abstract

In Charged Particle Therapy (PT) proton or 12C beams are used to treat deep-seated solid tumors exploiting the advantageous characteristics of charged particles energy deposition in matter. For such projectiles, the maximum of the dose is released at the end of the beam range, in the Bragg peak region, where the tumour is located. However, the nuclear interactions of the beam nuclei with the patient tissues can induce the fragmentation of projectiles and/or target nuclei and needs to be carefully taken into account when planning the treatment. In proton treatments, the target fragmentation produces low energy, short range fragments along all the beam path, that deposit a non-negligible dose especially in the first crossed tissues. On the other hand, in treatments performed using 12C, or other (4He or 16O) ions of interest, the main concern is related to the production of long range fragments that can release their dose in the healthy tissues beyond the Bragg peak. Understanding nuclear fragmentation processes is of interest also for radiation protection in human space flight applications, in view of deep space missions. In particular 4He and high-energy charged particles, mainly 12C, 16O, 28Si and 56Fe, provide the main source of absorbed dose in astronauts outside the atmosphere. The nuclear fragmentation properties of the materials used to build the spacecrafts need to be known with high accuracy in order to optimise the shielding against the space radiation. The study of the impact of these processes, which is of interest both for PT and space radioprotection applications, suffers at present from the limited experimental precision achieved on the relevant nuclear cross sections that compromise the reliability of the available computational models. The FOOT (FragmentatiOn Of Target) collaboration, composed of researchers from France, Germany, Italy and Japan, designed an experiment to study these nuclear processes and measure the corresponding fragmentation cross sections. In this work we discuss the physics motivations of FOOT, describing in detail the present detector design and the expected performances, coming from the optimization studies based on accurate FLUKA MC simulations and preliminary beam test results. The measurements planned will be also presented.

Abstract

We compare existing experimental decay heat data sets measured at the JAEA fusion neutron source (FNS), which employed a fast extraction rabbit system that in certain cases allowed the measurements to capture, at short cooling times, the decay profile of 16N in a range of oxides. Focussing on those data points and timescales that can be attributed to 16N, we compare measurements to simulations performed using the FISPACT-II inventory code together with evaluated nuclear data libraries. Making small corrections for other contributions at these short times, we derive integral cross section data estimates for 16O(n,p)16N from 12 oxide sample measurements and compare with previously obtained measurements in the IAEA EXFOR database and evaluations in the nuclear data libraries themselves.

Abstract

Nükleer fizik araştırmalarında kullanılacak olan elementlerin, yapmış oldukları nükleer reaksiyonlar sonucunda açığa çıkan parçacıkların açısal dağılımının bilinmesi, temel nükleer fizik çalışmalarının yanı sıra, zırhlama ve nükleer reaktör tasarımı gibi konularda da oldukça önemlidir. Ayrıca incelenen Selenyum elementin nükleer karakteristiği hakkında da bilgi sahibi olmamızı sağlar. Gerçekleşen nükleer reaksiyonun devamında saçılan parçacıkların açısal dağılımları, nükleer reaksiyonun hangi mekanizma ile gerçekleştiğinin belirlenmesini sağlamaktadır. Selenyum elementinin temel atomik özelliklerinin ve reaksiyon sonucunda açığa çıkan parçacıklarının açısal tesir kesitlerinin bilinmesi, nükleer anlamda selenyum elementi ile yapılacak çalışmalarda ışık tutacaktır. Bu nedenden dolayı, bu çalışmada Se için (n,x) reaksiyonu diferansiyel tesir kesitleri hesaplanmıştır. Hesaplamalarda “Monte Carlo” temelli bir simulasyon programı olan “PHITS 2.88” kodu kullanılmıştır. 40o ve 14,55 MeV enerjide, 60o 14,69 MeV enerjide, 90o 14,79 MeV enerjide, nötron ile reaksiyona giren Selenyum elementinden saçılan nötronların, diferansiyel tesir kesitleri farklı açı ve farklı enerji değerlerinde hesaplanmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar Uluslararası Nükleer Reaksiyon Veri Merkezi (EXFOR)’ dan alınan deneysel verilerle karşılaştırılarak yorumlanmıştır. 40o, 60o,90o derecelerde elde edilen veriler, genel olarak, deneysel verilerle uyum göstermiştir. Uç noktalardaki enerjide ki bunlar en düşük enerji seviyeleridir, bu noktalardaki ihmal edilebilir uyumsuzluk gözlenmiştir, düşük enerjideki oluşan bu uyumsuzluğun, saçılmanın değişkenlik oranın artmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. To know the angular distribution of the elements to be used in nuclear physics research and the particles released as a result of their nuclear reactions. In addition to basic nuclear physics studies, it is also very important in subjects such as shielding and nuclear reactor design. It also provides us with information about the nuclear characteristic of the Selenium element studied. The angular distribution of the particles scattered in the continuation of the nuclear reaction that takes place enables the determination of the mechanism by which the nuclear reaction takes place. Knowing the basic atomic properties of the element selenium and the angular cross-section of the particles released as a result of the reaction will shed light on the studies to be carried out with the element selenium in nuclear terms. For this reason, in this study, the differential cross-sections of the reaction (n, x) for Se are calculated. The code "PHITS 2.88", which is a "Monte Carlo" based simulation program, was used in the calculations. The differential cross sections of the neutrons scattered from the Selenium element reacting with the neutron at 40o and 14,55 MeV energy, 60o 14,69 MeV energy, 90o 14,79 MeV energy, were calculated at different angles and different energy values. The results obtained were interpreted by comparing them with the experimental data obtained from the International Nuclear Reaction Data Center (EXFOR). Data obtained at 40o, 60o, 90o degrees generally agreed with experimental data. In the energy at the extreme points, which are the lowest energy levels, a negligible mismatch at these points has been observed, this disharmony at low energy is due to the increase in the rate of variability of scattering. In order to reduce the mismatch in these energy levels, increasing the number of counts is a method that can eliminate this mismatch in energy. As a result, the angular cross-section calculation of selenium was made in the simulation program PHITS, which was calculated using Monte Carlo Method for the element Selenium, and it was found to be compatible with the experimental results. Abstract

The aim of this letter is to suggest new semi-empirical formulae for the prediction of (n,d) cross sections with a neutron energy of 14–15 MeV. In this context, the cross sections are calculated using systematic that is function only of the reaction Q -value and mass number A . The (n,d) reactions are analyzed by using the systematics based on the statistical theory. Thus, the present semi-empirical formulae compared with the cross section data in literature give a good fit for the prediction of the (n,d) cross sections at 14–15 MeV.

Using a high statistics sample of muon neutrino charged current quasielastic (CCQE) events, we report the first measurement of the double differential cross section (d2σdTμdcos θμ) for this process. The result features reduced model dependence and supplies the most complete information on neutrino CCQE scattering to date. Measurements of the absolute cross section as a function of neutrino energy (σ[EQE,RFGν]) and the single differential cross section (dσdQ2QE) are also provided, largely to facilitate comparison with prior measurements. This data is of particular use for understanding the axial-vector form factor of the nucleon as well as improving the simulation of low energy neutrino interactions on nuclear targets, which is of particular relevance for experiments searching for neutrino oscillations. Abstract

Thirty-four new nuclides with Z = 104–116, 118 and N = 161–177 have been synthesized in the complete-fusion reactions of 238U, 237Np, 242,244Pu, 243Am, 245,248Cm, and 249Cf targets with 48Ca beams. The masses of evaporation residues were identified through measurements of the excitation functions of the xn-evaporation channels and from cross bombardments. The decay properties of the new nuclei agree with those of previously known heavy nuclei and with predictions from different theoretical models. A discussion of self-consistent interpretations of all observed decay chains originating from the parent isotopes 282,283112, 282113, 286–289114, 287,288115, 290–293116, and 294118 is presented. Decay energies and lifetimes of the neutron-rich superheavy nuclei as well as their production cross sections indicate a considerable increase in the stability of nuclei with the approach to the theoretically predicted nuclear shells with N = 184 and Z = 114. The neutron capture cross sections of Gd isotopes (155Gd, 156Gd, 157Gd, and 158Gd) have been measured in the neutron energy range from 10 to 90 keV using the 3-MV Pelletron accelerator of the Research Laboratory for Nuclear Reactors at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Pulsed keV neutrons were produced from the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction by bombarding the lithium target with the 1.5-ns bunched proton beam from the Pelletron accelerator. The incident neutron spectrum on a capture sample was measured by means of a TOF method with a 6Li-glass detector. Capture γ-rays were detected with a large anti-Compton NaI(Tl) spectrometer, employing a TOF method. A pulse-height weighting technique was applied to observed capture γ-ray pulse-height spectra to derive capture yields. The capture cross sections were obtained by using the standard capture cross sections of 197Au. The neutron induced nuclear cross section data were calculated and evaluated from an unresolved energy to 20 MeV. The energy dependent potential parameters were extracted based on the recent experimental data and applied up to 20 MeV. A spherical optical model and a statistical model in an equilibrium energy, and a multistep direct and a multistep compound model in a pre-equilibrium energy were used in the calculation. The direct capture model was introduced for the fast neutron capture. The theoretically calculated cross sections were compared with the experimental data and the evaluated files. The evaluated cross section results were compiled in an ENDF-6 format and finally merged with the resonance part. The experimental data from the 2 m propane bubble chamber have been analyzed for pC→ Λ(Ks0)X reactions at 10 GeV/c. The estimation of experimental inclusive cross sections for Lgr; and Ks0 production in the p12C collision is equal to σΛ= 13.3±1.7 mb and σKs0= 3.8±0.6 mb, respectively. The measured Λ/π+ ratio from pC reactions is equal to (5.3±0.8) * 10-2. The experimental Λ/π+ ratio in the pC reaction is approximately two times larger than the Λ/π+ ratio from pp reactions. There is a significant enhancement specially in the Λ/π+ ratio for p+C and C+C collisions at 10 A·GeV/c. International audience; The pion resonance in the nuclear reaction cross section is seen to have a direct impact on the single-event effect (SEE) cross section of modern electronic devices. This was experimentally observed for single-event upsets and single-event latchup. Rectangular parallelepiped (RPP) models built to fit proton data confirm the existence of the pion SEE cross-section resonance. The impact on current radiation hardness assurance (RHA) soft error rate (SER) predictions is, however, minimal for the accelerator environment since this is dominated by high neutron fluxes. The resonance is not seen to have a major impact on the high-energy hadron equivalence approximation established for testing in mixed-field facilities.

Abstract

International audience; Terbium is one of the most interesting elements for new potential theranostics applications. Indeed, the physical properties of four of its radionuclides ( $^{149}$ Tb, $^{152}$ Tb, $^{155}$ Tb, $^{161}$ Tb) allow their use in each main applications of nuclear medicine. $^{149}$ Tb is the lowest mass alpha emitter with suitable physical properties for receptor-targeted alpha therapy (TAT), and the only one among the radiolanthanides. Currently $^{149}$ Tb is only produced through spallation reactions induced by high-energy proton beam coupled with mass separation to obtain suitable purity. The aim of the present work is to investigate the production of $^{149}$ Tb using commercial cyclotrons by irradiation of natural gadolinium target. New excitation functions for proton-induced nuclear reactions on natural gadolinium have been measured. Our results extend current knowledge up to 70 MeV and are in good agreement with existing data at low energy. From this new set of data, production yield estimations are calculated and discussed.

Abstract

In this Letter, we report the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions at low particle momenta, covering a range of $0.3 \leq p < 4$ GeV/$c$. The measurement is carried out using p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC and utilizing the detector material as an absorber for antideuterons and antiprotons. The extracted raw primary antiparticle-to-particle ratios are compared to the results from detailed ALICE simulations based on the GEANT4 toolkit for the propagation of antiparticles through the detector material. The analysis of the raw primary (anti)proton spectra serves as a benchmark for this study, since their hadronic interaction cross sections are well constrained experimentally. The first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions averaged over the ALICE detector material with atomic mass numbers $\langle A \rangle$ = 17.4 and 31.8 is obtained. The measured inelastic cross section points to a possible excess with respect to the Glauber model parameterization used in GEANT4 in the lowest momentum interval of $0.3 \leq p < 0.47$ GeV/$c$ up to a factor 2.1. This result is relevant for the understanding of antimatter propagation and the contributions to antinuclei production from cosmic ray interactions within the interstellar medium. Abstract

New Experiments With Spheres-Gas (NEWS-G) is a direct dark matter detection experiment using Spherical Proportional Counters (SPCs) with light noble gases to search for low-mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). We report the results from the first physics run taken at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) with SEDINE, a 60 cm diameter prototype SPC operated with a mixture of $\mathrm{Ne}+\mathrm{CH}_{4}$ (0.7 %) at 3.1 bars for a total exposure of $9.7\;\mathrm{kg\cdot days}$. New constraints are set on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section in the sub-$\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ mass region. We exclude cross-sections above $4.4 \times \mathrm{10^{-37}\;cm^2}$ at 90 % confidence level (C.L.) for a 0.5 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ WIMP. Abstract

The study of nuclear reactions is critical to understanding nuclear structure. For allnuclear reactions, the cross section is the probability of a particular nuclear reactionoccurring. Cross sections can be simulated with two nuclear coding and analysissoftware packages known as Empire and TALYS, both based on the Hauser-Feshbachformalism. Empire can simulate multiple types of nuclear reactions given any number of parameters. It can simulate fission, fusion, and scattering, with both subatomic and heavier nuclei as incident particles. TALYS is a similar nuclear reaction simulationsoftware, but is less flexible than Empire, as it can only utilize incident subatomicparticles. Due to the similarity between the two software packages, generating graphsthat match between them and are consistent with literature provide confidence in thereliability of both Empire and TALYS. In this study, Empire and TALYS were firstcompared using reactions involving the target nuclei 54Fe, 93Nb, and 209Bi. Next,existing data from Edwards Accelerator Laboratory from an experiment involving a 12C beam incident on a 27Al target has been collected and will be analyzed soon. Cross sections for various reactions of 12C + 27Al were simulated with Empire, and results are discussed

36. A personal view of nucleon structure as revealed by electron scattering.

Abstract

I was graduated from City College of New York in 1935 after majoring in physics and mathematics. In my early years in college I was stimulated by my teachers Irving Lowen and Mark Zemansky. From both I learned to appreciate clarity and precision in thinking. I believe I owe to Zemansky the opportunity of entering the Princeton Graduate School in 1935. I suppose he wrote good letters of recommendation to the Princeton Admission Committee and to the General Electric Company's board of advisors for their Charles A. Coffin Foundation Fellowship. I had the Coffin Fellowship for the year 1935–6, and a stipulation of that fellowship was that I had to be involved in research, even in my first year of graduate study. This condition weighed pretty heavily on me, and as a result of advice from Harry Smyth, then chairman of the Physics Department, I started working with Louis Ridenour on a Wilson cloud-chamber project. Earlier, I had given some theoretical assistance to Walker Bleakney in his design of a new mass spectrograph operating on a cycloidal trajectory principle. Because of the time I spent on research, I really had much less time than I wanted for course work, in particular in the quantum mechanics course I took from Eugene Wigner. In my second year, now with an assistantship to E. U. Condon, I really tried hard to become a theorist. Abstract: Total cross section parameterizations for neutral and charged pion production in nucleon–nucleon collisions are compared to experimental data over the projectile momentum range from threshold to 300GeV. Both proton–proton and proton–neutron reactions are considered. Overall excellent agreement between parameterizations and experiment is found, except for some disagreements near threshold. This gives much greater confidence to previously developed pion cross section formulas for nucleon–nucleon, proton–nucleus, and nucleus–nucleus reactions. Abstract: The progress achieved in an IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP) to improve the cross section data for IBA is reported. The objective of the CRP, started in 2005, is to create a nuclear cross section database for IBA that contains reliable and usable data freely available to the entire IBA community. The major results achieved so far by the CRP participants are discussed. The results include compilation and assessment of the existing cross sections, new experimental data and evaluation of the most wanted cross sections. Abstract: In the frame of an IAEA coordinated research project (CRP) on nuclear data for production of therapeutic radionuclides, the production of 192Ir via deuteron-induced reactions on enriched 192Os was investigated up to 21MeV deuteron energy. Cross sections were measured using the conventional stacked-foil irradiation technique and high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy of the activation products. No earlier experimental data were found in the literature. The excitation functions of the 192Os(d,2n)192m1+gIr and 192Os(d,p)193Os reactions were compared with the results of nuclear model calculations using the standard and presently upgraded versions (D-version) of ALICE-IPPE, EMPIRE-II and GNASH codes, while for the (d,2n) channel the GNASH and EMPIRE-II codes reproduced the data in an acceptable way; in both cases for the (d,p) reaction the very large discrepancy observed between the experimental data and standard codes results is vanishing when the upgraded versions of ALICE and EMPIRE-II are used. Abstract: Pure target ionization was investigated for 0.4–6.4MeV C q+(q =1–4)+He and O q+(q =1–4)+He collisions. The double-to-single target ionization ratios R 21 were measured using coincidence techniques. We compare our results with existing experimental results and find they are in good agreement. The ratio R 21 is nearly independent of projectile charge state. The relation of R 21 ∼ V is analyzed using the over barrier model (OBM) and ionization probability, which is described in our extended over barrier model. Abstract: The detector for advanced neutron capture experiments (DANCE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is used for neutron capture cross sections measurements. Its high granularity of 160 BaF2 detectors in a 4π geometry allows for highly efficient detection of prompt γ-rays following a neutron capture. The performance of the detector was simulated using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo code. The model includes all 160 BaF2 crystals with realistic dimensions and geometry. The 6LiH shell, beam pipe, crystal wrapping material, aluminum holders, photomultiplier material and materials of the calibration sources were included in the simulation. Simulated γ-ray energy and total γ-ray energy spectra gated on cluster and crystal multiplicities were compared to measured data using 88Y, 60Co, 22Na calibration sources. Good agreement was achieved. A total efficiency and peak-to-total ratio as a function of γ-ray energy was established for mono-energetic γ-rays. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Several neutron activation cross section libraries have been produced recently with data above the energy of 20MeV. These are needed because of new applications, such as the International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) and Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS). A standard validation procedure for such libraries is a comparison with differential and integral experimental data. However, the number of differential data above 20MeV is relatively small and there are very few integral experiments with neutron spectra dominated by high-energy (>20MeV) neutrons. Furthermore the size of these libraries (about 775 targets and >60,000 reactions) favours global test procedures. It is shown that the method of ‘Statistical analysis of cross sections’ (SACS) can be used for this purpose. This is based on the assumptions that cross section excitation curves for all targets have a similar (bell) shape shifted by differences in Q-value, and that their properties, such as the maximum of the excitation curve (σ max), the incident neutron energy at which σ max occurs (E max) and the width of the excitation curve at half its maximum (Δ 1/2) have a pronounced smooth trend as a function of A or s. It will be demonstrated that this method of analysis is a very effective and novel way to validate reaction cross section data, both for their shape and their magnitude. This will be illustrated using the recent European Activation Library EAF-2005, produced within the EFDA Fusion Technology Programme. The majority of the cross section data in the library are based on calculations with the nuclear reaction code TALYS. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Nuclear reactions induced by deuterons have been found to be an ideal analysis tool for depth profiling of light elements in the first microns of materials. In particular, the nonresonant nuclear reactions (d,p), (d,α) and (d,t) are well adapted to determine depth distributions of 12C and 13C in a single measurement. Nevertheless, only the cross section of the 12C(d,p0)13C nuclear reaction is well known for various experimental configurations. Thus, we measured the differential cross sections of the 13C(d,p0)14C, 13C(d,α0)11B, 13C(d,α1)11B and 13C(d,t0)12C nuclear reactions. A thin 13C foil (83nm thick) was used and the measurements were performed at deuteron energies from 0.5 to 1.65MeV for different laboratory angles of detection (135°, 150° and 165° with respect to the incident beam). In the frame of a systematic study of the activation cross sections of charged particle induced nuclear reactions on rare earths for production of therapeutic radionuclides, proton induced reactions on neodymium were measured up to 65 MeV energy, above 45 MeV for the first time. The excitation functions of the Nd-nat(p,x)Pm-150,Pm-149,Pm-148m,Pm-148g,Pm-146,Pm-144,Pm-143,Pm-141, Nd-149,Nd-147,Nd-141,Nd-140,Nd-139m,Nd-138, Pr-142,Pr-138m and Ce-139g nuclear reactions were assessed by using stacked foil activation technique and high resolution gamma-spectrometry. The excitation functions were compared to the theoretical predictions, available in the TENDL-2015 library based on latest version of the TALYS code. The application of the data for medical isotope production is shortly discussed.

Abstract: High precision cross-section data of the deuteron–proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV deuteron energy are compared with the theoretical predictions obtained with a coupled-channel extension of the CD Bonn potential with virtual Δ-isobar excitation, without and with inclusion of the long-range Coulomb force. The Coulomb effect is studied on the basis of the cross-section data set, extended in this work to about 1500 data points by including breakup geometries characterized by small polar angles of the two protons. The experimental data clearly prefer predictions obtained with the Coulomb interaction included.
