Abstract

The cross section of the 89 Y(n, γ ) reaction has important implications in nuclear astrophysics and for advanced nuclear technology. Given its neutron magic number N = 50 and a consequent small neutron capture cross section, 89 Y represents one of the key nuclides for the stellar s-process. It acts as a bottleneck in the neutron capture chain between the Fe seed and the heavier elements. Moreover, it is located at the overlapping region, where both the weak and main s-process components take place. 89 Y, the only stable yttrium isotope, is also used in innovative nuclear reactors. Neutron capture and transmission measurements were performed at the time-of-flight facilities n_TOF at CERN and GELINA at JRC-Geel. Resonance parameters of individual resonances were extracted from a resonance analysis of the experimental transmission and capture yields, up to a neutron incident energy of 95 keV. Even though a comparison with results reported in the literature shows differences in resonance parameters, the present data are consistent with the Maxwellian averaged cross section suggested by the astrophysical database KADoNiS. Abstract

Ternary fission is an important source of He and tritium gas in nuclear reactors and used fuel elements. Therefore a systematic study of the ternary fission yields for 4He and tritons (t) is being performed. In recent years the influence of the excitation energy of the fissioning nucleus on the triton emission probability (t/B) has been investigated for different Cm and Cf isotopes. Abstract

The MetroFission project, a Joint Research Project within the European Metrology Research Program, aims at addressing a number of metrological problems involved in the design of proposed Generation IV nuclear reactors. As part of this project a secondary neutron fluence standard is being developed and tested at the neutron time-of-flight facility GELINA of the JRCs Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements. Such a secondary standard will help to arrive at the neutron cross section measurement uncertainties required for the design and safety assessment of new generation power plants and fuel cycles. Such a neutron fluence device contains targets for which the neutron induced cross section is considered to be a standard. A careful preparation and characterization of these samples is an essential part of the development of the secondary standard. In this framework a set of U targets has been produced by vapour deposition of UF on aluminium backings by IRMMs target preparation laboratory. Abstract

Pu and Pu targets were prepared by the so-called 'molecular plating' on an Al backing for cross-section measurements. The total activity of the actinide layer was determined by low-geometry alpha-particle counting. The atomic abundances of the two Pu materials were determined via thermal ionization mass spectrometry. A radiochemical separation was performed by anion exchange prior to the preparation of the layers to prevent interferences with the ingrown daughter nuclide during the characterization and cross-section measurements. The targets were prepared to be used in the project 'Metrology for New Generation Nuclear Power Plants' (MetroFission), within the frame of the European Metrology Research Programme, directed to improve the knowledge on neutron cross sections through metrological approaches. For measurements of the Pu( n, f) and Pu( n, f) cross sections Pu and Pu targets were produced and mounted in fission chambers. In parallel, Pu and Pu targets were prepared for the ANDES project (Accurate Nuclear Data for Nuclear Energy Sustainability) for cross-section measurements at the CERN neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF, and the Van de Graaff laboratories of IRMM and CNRS/CENBG. 6. Nuclear data sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of effective neutron multiplication factor in various MYRRHA core configurations.

Abstract

A sensitivity and uncertainty analysis was carried out to estimate the uncertainty in the neutron multiplication factor k eff and to identify the most important nuclear data for neutron induced reactions for criticality calculations of the latest MYRRHA designs. Sensitivity profiles, i.e. sensitivity to the nuclear data as a function of incoming neutron energy, were derived for both a critical and sub-critical core. They were calculated using codes that are based on different methodologies including stochastic and deterministic calculations (i.e. SCALE, MCNP and XSUN). The neutron induced nuclear data sensitivity analysis outlined the following quantities to be of special importance for the MYRRHA reactor concept: 239 Pu(n,γ) both in resonance and fast energy region, (n,f) fast, χ and ν fast; 238 U(n,n′) fast, (n,γ) resonance and fast, (n,n) resonance and fast; 240 Pu ν fast; 238 Pu(n,f) both resonance and fast; 56 Fe(n,γ) both resonance and fast. Differences of less than 4% between codes were obtained for these quantities, with few exceptions ( 238 Pu(n,f), 238 U(n,n) and 56 Fe(n,γ) reactions). Nuclear data covariance matrices of different libraries (SCALE-6, COMMARA-2 and JENDL-4.0m) were used to derive the uncertainty in k eff based on the calculated sensitivities. This study reveals that the largest contributions to k eff uncertainty result from the uncertainty in the average prompt neutron fission multiplicity of 239 Pu, in the 238 U inelastic scattering cross section and 239 Pu fission cross section, using the covariances from SCALE-6, COMMARA-2 and JENDL-4.0m, respectively. Abstract

New neutron cross section measurements of minor actinides have been performed recently in order to reduce the uncertainties in the evaluated data, which is important for the design of advanced nuclear reactors and, in particular, for determining their performance in the transmutation of nuclear waste. We have measured the 241 Am(n,γ) cross section at the n TOF facility between 0.2 eV and 10 keV with a BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter, and the analysis of the measurement has been recently concluded. Our results are in reasonable agreement below 20 eV with the ones published by C. Lampoudis et al. in 2013, who reported a 22% larger capture cross section up to 110 eV compared to experimental and evaluated data published before. Our results also indicate that the 241 Am(n,γ) cross section is underestimated in the present evaluated libraries between 20 eV and 2 keV by 25%, on average, and up to 35% for certain evaluations and energy ranges. Abstract

The spent fuel of current nuclear reactors contains fissile plutonium isotopes that can be combined with 238U to make mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. In this way the Pu from spent fuel is used in a new reactor cycle, contributing to the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy. The use of MOX fuels in thermal and fast reactors requires accurate capture and fission cross sections. For the particular case of 242Pu, the previous neutron capture cross section measurements were made in the 70’s, providing an uncertainty of about 35% in the keV region. In this context, the Nuclear Energy Agency recommends in its “High Priority Request List” and its report WPEC-26 that the capture cross section of 242Pu should be measured with an accuracy of at least 7–12% in the neutron energy range between 500 eV and 500 keV. This work presents a brief description of the measurement performed at n TOF-EAR1, the data reduction process and the first ToF capture measurement on this isotope in the last 40 years, providing preliminary individual resonance parameters beyond the current energy limits in the evaluations, as well as a preliminary set of average resonance parameters., This measurement has received funding from the EC FP7 Programme under the projects NEUTANDALUS (Grant No. 334315) and CHANDA (Grant No. 605203), and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness projects FPA2013- 45083-P and FPA2014-53290-C2-2-P.

Abstract

The importance of improving the accuracy on the capture cross-section of 238U has been addressed by the Nuclear Energy Agency, since its uncertainty significantly affects the uncertainties of key design parameters for both fast and thermal nuclear reactors. Within the 7th framework programme ANDES of the European Commission three different measurements have been carried out with the aim of providing the 238U(n,γ) cross-section with an accuracy which varies from 1 to 5%, depending on the energy range. Hereby the final results of the measurement performed at the n-TOF CERN facility in a wide energy range from 1 eV to 700 keV will be presented. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.
