Search

I give an overview on experimental studies of the spectrum and the structure of the excited states of the nucleon and what we can learn about their internal structure. One focus is on the efforts to obtain a more complete picture of the light-quark baryon excitation spectrum employing electromagnetic beams that will allow us to draw some conclusions on the symmetries underlying the spectrum. For the higher mass excitations, the full employment of coupled channel approaches is essential when searching for new excited states in the large amounts of data already accumulated in different channels involving a variety of polarization observables. The other focus is on the study of transition form factors and helicity amplitudes and their dependences on $Q^2$, especially on some of the more prominent resonances, especially $\Delta(1232)\frac{3}{2}^+$, $N(1440)\frac{1}{2}^+$, and negative parity states $N(1535)\frac{1}{2}^-$, and $N(1675)\frac{5}{2}^-$. These were obtained in pion and eta electroproduction experiments off proton targets and have already led to further insights in the active degrees-of-freedom as a function of the distance scale involved., Comment: 12 Pages, 18 figures. In this talk I address two high impact physics programs that require the use of polarized and unpolarized positron beams in addition to using electron beams of the same energy. First, I address what will be gained from using positron beams in addition to electron beams in the extraction of the Compton Form Factors (CFFs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs) from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) on a proton target. As a second high impact science program I discuss an experimental scenario using unpolarized positrons to measure elastic scattering on protons in an effort to determine definitively the 2-photon exchange contributions in order to resolve a longstanding discrepancy in the determination of the proton's electric and magnetic form factors., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

For half a century, the Roper resonance has defied understanding. Discovered in 1963, it appears to be an exact copy of the proton except that its mass is 50% greater. The mass is the first problem: it is difficult to explain with any theoretical tool that can validly be used to study quantum chromodynamics [QCD]. In the last decade, a new challenge has appeared, viz. precise information on the proton-to-Roper electroproduction transition form factors, reaching $Q^2\approx 4.5\,$GeV$^2$. This scale probes the domain within which hard valence-quark degrees-of-freedom could be expected to determine form factor behavior. Hence, with this new data the Roper resonance becomes a problem for strong-QCD [sQCD]. An explanation of how and where the Roper resonance fits into the emerging spectrum of hadrons cannot rest on a description of its mass alone. Instead, it must combine this with a detailed understanding of the Roper's structure and how that is revealed in the transition form factors. Furthermore, it must unify all this with a similarly complete picture of the proton. This is a prodigious task, but a ten-year international effort, drawing together experimentalists and theorists, has presented a solution to the puzzle. Namely, the Roper is at heart the proton's first radial excitation, consisting of a dressed-quark core augmented by a meson cloud that reduces the core mass by approximately 20% and materially alters its electroproduction form factors on $Q^2<2m_N^2$, where $m_N$ is the proton's mass. We describe the experimental motivations and developments which enabled electroproduction data to be procured within a domain that is unambiguously the purview of sQCD, thereby providing a real challenge and opportunity for modern theory; and survey the developments in reaction models and QCD theory that have enabled this conclusion to be drawn about the nature of the Roper resonance., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures

In this talk the role of spin and polarization is discussed in experimental search for new excited baryon states and in the study of the internal quark-gluon structure of the proton and neutron. Also the perspective of spin physics at the 12 GeV CEBAF electron accelerator is discussed and what we hope to learn about fundamental properties of hadrons such as their multi-dimensional structure through the momentum and spatial imaging, and about the forces on the quarks in the proton and how quark confinement may be realized through the spatial distribution of such forces., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures, Invited talk at SPIN 2016

Recent results of meson photo-production at the existing electron machines with polarized real photon beams and the measurement of polarization observables of the final state baryons have provided high precision data that led to the discovery of new excited nucleon and $\Delta$ states using multi-channel partial wave analyses procedures. The internal structure of several prominent excited states has been revealed employing meson electroproduction processes. On the theoretical front, lattice QCD is now predicting the baryon spectrum with very similar characteristics as the constituent quark model, and continuum QCD, such as is represented in the Dyson-Schwinger Equations approach and in light front relativistic quark models, describes the non-perturbative behavior of resonance excitations at photon virtuality of $Q^2 > 1.5GeV^2$. We analyze the current status of three P-wave baryon states $N(1710){1/ 2}^+$, $N(1900){3/2}^+$, and $\Delta(1600){3/2}^+$ as given in the Review of Particles Physics (RPP). Since the evidence for a particle's existence is linked to its RPP "star" rating, we discuss its subjective present definition. We also present the accumulating evidence supporting these states and give our new "star" rating recommendations., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Recent advances in the study of excited nucleons are discussed. The study of nucleon resonances in electromagnetic meson production with the CLAS detector is discussed. The electromagnetic interaction is complementary to pion scattering in the exploration of the nucleon excitation spectrum. Higher mass states often decouple from the $N\pi$ channel and are not seen in $\pi N \to \pi N$. Photoproduction of mesons, such as $K\Lambda$, $\omega p$ and $\eta^\prime p$ may be more sensitive to many of these states. The CLAS detector, combined with the use of energy-tagged polarized photons and polarized electrons, as well as polarized targets and the measurement of recoil polarization, are the tools needed for a comprehensive nucleon resonance program. An overview is presented of the upgrade of JLab's cw electron accelerator from a maximum beam energy of currently 6 GeV to 12 GeV. Construction of the 12 GeV upgrade project has started in 2008. A broad experimental program has been developed to map the nucleon's intrinsic correlated spin and momentum distribution through measurements of deeply exclusive and semi-inclusive processes, and to probe the quark and gluon confinement by studying the spectrum of mesons with exotic quantum numbers. Other programs include the forward parton distribution function at large xB, the quark and gluon polarized distribution functions, the measurements of electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon ground state and of nucleon resonance transitions at high Q2, and the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model in high precision parity violating processes. I give a brief overview of the exploration of baryon properties in meson photo- and electroproduction. These processes provide ample information for the study of electromagnetic couplings of baryon resonances and to search for states, yet to be discovered. The CLAS detector, combined with the use of energy-tagged polarized photons and polarized electrons, as well as polarized targets and the measurement of recoil polarization, provide the tools for a comprehensive nucleon resonance program. A brief overview of strangeness physics with the CLAS detector at JLab is given, mainly covering the domain of nucleon resonances. Several excited states predicted by the symmetric constituent quark model may have significant couplings to the K-Lambda or K-Sigma channels. Recent measurements of nucleon resonance transition form factors with CLAS at Jefferson Lab are discussed. The new data confirm the assertion of the symmetric constituent quark model of the Roper as the first radial excitation of the nucleon. For the first time, the longitudinal transition amplitude to the S11(1535) was extracted from the data. New results on the transition amplitudes for the D13(1520) resonance are presented showing a rapid transition from helicity 3/2 dominance seen at the real photon point to helicity 1/2 dominance at higher Q2. An overview of the CLAS12 detector is presented and the initial physics program after the energy-doubling of the Jefferson Lab electron accelerator. Construction of the 12 GeV upgrade project has started October 2008. A broad program has been developed to map the nucleon's 3-dimensional spin and flavor content through the measurement of deeply exclusive and semi-inclusive processes. Other programs include forward distribution function to large $x_{B} \le 0.85$ and of the quark and gluon polarized distribution functions, as well as nucleon ground state and transition form factors at high $Q^2$. Recent measurements of nucleon resonance transition form factors with CLAS at Jefferson Lab are discussed. The new data resolve a long-standing puzzle of the nature of the Roper resonance, and confirm the assertion of the symmetric constituent quark model of the Roper as the first radial excitation of the nucleon. The data on $n\pi^+$ production at high $Q^2$ confirm the slow fall off of the $S_{11}(1535)$ transition form factor with $Q^2$, and better constrain the branching ratios $\beta_{N\pi}=0.50$ and $\beta_{N\eta}=0.45$. Also, new results on the transition amplitudes for the $D_{13}(1520)$ resonance are presented showing a rapid change from helicity 3/2 dominance seen at the real photon point to helicty 1/2 dominance at higher $Q^2$., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

The status of the search for pentaquark baryons is reviewed in light of new results from the first two dedicated experiments from CLAS at Jefferson Lab and of new analyses from several laboratories on the $Theta^+(1540)$. I discuss recent results from Jefferson Lab on the measurement of inclusive spin structure functions in the nucleon resonance region using polarized electron beams and polarized targets. Results on the first moment of the spin structure function for protons and neutrons are discussed, as well as the Bjorken integral. I will argue that the helicity structure of individual resonances plays a vital role in understanding the nucleon's spin response in the domain of strong interaction QCD, and must be considered in any analysis of the nucleon spin structure at low and intermediate photon virtuality., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. I discuss recent results on the electroproduction and photoproduction of mesons in the region of non-strange baryon resonances. Results on the quadrupole transition from the ground state nucleon to the Delta(1232) show the importance of pion cloud contributions to explain the observed quadrupole transition multipoles. The excitation of the "Roper" resonance is being studied in single pion production using unpolarized cross sections measurements and beam spin asymmetries. New results on the S_{11}(1535) transition formfactor give now a consistent picture over a large Q2 range. First results on electroproduction of p pi^+ pi^- show intruiging resonance structure. which is difficult to explain in an isobar model fit using known resonance properties, and may hint at excitation of a "missing" resonance. Searches for resonances in K^+Lambda also reveal resonance-like behavior. Recent results on inclusive and exclusive electroproduction experiments at Jefferson Lab are discussed. They include measurements of the spin responses for protons and neutrons in and above the resonance region, exclusive single and double pion production to measure resonance transition multipoles, and searches for predicted yet unobserved quark model states. Recent results from Jefferson Lab on measurement of inclusive double polarization asymmetries in the nucleon resonance region are discussed. Preliminary results on the first moment of the structure function g_1(x,Q^2) for protons, and on the generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for neutrons are presented as well. The first moment for protons shows a strong Q^2 dependence below Q^2 = 1 GeV^2, and changes sign near Q^2 = 0.3 GeV^2. I discuss developments in the area of nucleon resonance excitations that are necessary to bring our understanding of nucleon structure in the regime of strong QCD to a qualitatively new level. They involve the collection of high quality data in various channels, a more rigorous approach in the search for "missing" quark model states, an effort to compute some critical quantities in nucleon resonance excitations from first principles, i.e. QCD, and a proposal aimed at obtaining an understanding of a fundamental quantity in nucleon structure., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Applications of the chiral expansion to generalize the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for finite $Q^2$ are discussed. The observation of several authors that the corrections to the leading order contributions are large and limit the applicability to a very small range in $Q^2$, are valid when considering the sum rule for protons and neutrons, separately. When using the proton-neutron difference, the chiral expansion may be valid to considerably higher momentum transfers where hadronic degrees of freedom at large distances may connect up with quark and gluon degrees of freedom. Recent results on studies of the structure of nucleons and nuclei in the regime of strong interaction QCD are discussed. Use of high current polarized electron beams, polarized targets, and recoil polarimeters, in conjunction with modern spectrometers and detector instrumentation allow much more detailed studies of nucleon and nuclear structure than has been possible in the past. The CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab was build to study the internal structure of hadrons in a regime where confinement is important and strong interaction QCD is the relevant theory.
