With the rapid escalation of COVID-19 educational needs within hospitals, it was imperative for content experts of the infection prevention departments to lean on the expertise of nursing professional development specialists. The article focuses on the state of the science on safe medication administration symposium. The goals of the symposium were to determine research priorities and to make clinical education and policy recommendations to ensure safe medication administration. The symposium was attended by 40 nursing and professional experts. Most medication errors occur at patient care-transition points. Nurses serve important roles at such points, which include hospital admission, transfer from one unit to another and discharge to home or another facility.

The article focuses on safe medication administration and presents a report that have increased the awareness about the problem of errors in health care and their impact. About 46 to 56% of all medication errors occurs during times of transfer of the patient from one unit or setting to another, such as from nursing home to hospital, ED to critical care or surgical unit to a rehabilitation facility. According to a study, one of every three adverse drug events from medication errors occurs when a nurse administers medications.

The article presents an overview of the National League of Nursing's (NLN) Center of Excellence (COE) designation in the U.S. It states that the process of obtaining COE designation is described relative to the Hallmarks of Excellence in Nursing Education and offers a palette of primary characteristics that represents a level of outstanding performance or service that leads excellence. In addition, the NLN's Excellence in Nursing Education Model provides a visual map of the road to excellence and reflects eight core elements.
