Aim: To investigate midwives' (MWs) and public health nurses' (PHNs) clinical practice and knowledge related to nutrition, with a particular focus on iodine in northern parts of Norway. Maternal iodine status prior to and during pregnancy, and the lactating period, is crucial for brain development and growth of the foetus and infant, from conception up until the first two years of life. In Norway, studies have documented mild to moderate iodine deficiency in this group., Design/methods: MWs (n = 128) and PHNs (n = 154) responded to a survey regarding nutrition and iodine. Descriptive data and non-parametric tests were used to analyse data., Results: Around half of the participants provided dietary guidance to a great extent. Practice of iodine-specific recommendations was lower, particularly regarding lactating women. Routine screening for postpartum depression (PPD) is widespread, yet little attention has been given to the perceived preparedness of health providers to perform screening procedures, or to the role of organizational factors in their preparedness, although these are crucial elements for optimal implementation. The aim of this study was to examine organizational factors associated with public health nurses' (PHNs) perceived preparedness to screen women for PPD, intervene, and refer them in cases of suspected PPD. Two hundred and nineteen PHNs completed a self-report survey regarding their perceived preparedness to carry out a screening program (including screening, intervening, and referring women), and their perceived organizational support, supervisor's support, colleagues' support, and colleagues' preparedness. A path analysis model was used to analyze the data. The results showed that perceived colleagues' preparedness was significantly associated with the three perceived preparedness constructs (screen, intervene, and refer). Perceived supervisor's support was positively associated with perceived preparedness to screen, and perceived organizational support was positively associated with perceived preparedness to intervene. This paper highlights the manner in which formal and informal organizational factors play an important role in the perceived preparedness of PHNs to carry out a PPD screening program, and how these factors impact the three different aspects of the screening program. Organizations implementing PPD screening should support PHNs in all aspects of the implementation process, provide guidance, and enhance peer-group continued learning through which PHNs could share knowledge, discuss barriers, and foster professional development.

Background: Dignity is a central human value supported by nurses' professional ethics. In previous studies, nurses in clinical practice have experienced that dignity increased their work well-being and pride of work. Dignity is also strictly interweaved to professional identity in the different nursing' roles, but little is known about dignity among public health nurses and primary care settings., Purpose: This study aimed to describe the perceptions of nursing's professional dignity of public health nurses in primary care in Finland., Research Design: An inductive qualitative descriptive approach with semi-structured focus group interviews was utilised., Participants and Research Context: Twenty-seven Finnish public health nurses were interviewed via eight semi-structured focus group interviews in primary health care settings., Ethical Considerations: Before data collection, research permissions were obtained from participating health care centres. This type of research in Finland, with competent adult participants, does not require ethical pre-assessment but written and oral informed consent obtained before the interviews., Findings: Based on our findings, public health nurses perceived that professional dignity was (1) part of their self-respect, an observed daily value based on their acknowledged competence. Besides, they perceived that (2) service users' trust in public health nurses was a strong expression of professional dignity, and it could be uncovered when recipients of care utilised their services. In addition, public health nurses experienced that (3) professional dignity was an expression of different intertwined interprofessional and social factors., Discussion and Conclusion: Professional dignity is simultaneously an essential prerequisite and an outcome of public health nurses' work. In future, more information would be needed to implement strategies in primary health care to foster nurses' professional dignity also in international public health arenas.

Background: Ethical sensitivity is a prerequisite for ethical nursing practices. Efforts to improve nurses' ethical sensitivity are required to correctly recognise ethical conflicts and for sound decision-making. Because an emerging infectious disease response involves complex ethical issues, it is important to understand the factors that influence public health nurses' ethical sensitivity while caring for patients with COVID-19, an emerging infectious disease., Objectives: This study aims to identify the relationship between nursing professionalism, the organisation's ethical climate, and the ethical sensitivity of nurses who care for emerging infectious disease patients in Korean public health centres. Further, it sought to identify factors influencing ethical sensitivity and the mediating effect of the organisational ethical climate to inform guidelines and improve ethical sensitivity., Research Design: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study., Participants and Research Context: Data were collected from February 3 to 8 March 2021. Participants included 167 nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 in public health centres in South Korea., Ethical Consideration: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Chung-Ang University and followed the principles of research ethics., Results: The factors influencing ethical sensitivity were working at a COVID-19 disease direct response department, nursing professionalism, and organisation's ethical climate. The organisation's ethical climate showed a partial mediating effect on the influence of nursing professionalism on ethical sensitivity., Conclusion: Our findings show that nurses' ethical sensitivity can be improved by refining the organisation's ethical climate and nursing professionalism.

Public health nurses are performing various roles during the COVID-19 pandemic: counseling, surveillance, specimen collection, epidemiological investigation, education, and vaccination. This study investigated their disaster competencies in the context of emerging infectious diseases, and identified their influencing factors based on Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory. A convenience sample of 242 was selected from public health nurses working in a metropolitan city of South Korea. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS Statistics ver. 23.0. Results showed that the significant factors influencing disaster competencies included "willingness to respond to a disaster," "preventive behavior," "experience of receiving education on emerging infectious diseases response," "public health center experience," "job satisfaction," and "education." This regression model explained 33.2% of the variance in disaster competencies. "Willingness to respond to a disaster" was the strongest factor affecting disaster competencies. Based on these results, it is concluded that interventions to improve disaster competencies and psychological well-being of public health nurses are needed. Additionally, strategies such as creating a supportive work environment, deploying experienced nurses primarily on the front line, and reducing the tasks of permanent public health nurses should be implemented., (© 2022. The study presents the iterative process of the adaption and psychometric properties evaluation of the Work Environment/Support/Encouragement section of the Revised Casey-Fink Nurse Retention Survey © (2009) to measure the work environment of public health nurses (PHNs). This secondary data analysis was based on data collected from a convenience sample of 596 PHNs across North Carolina that were originally used to study PHNs workforce retention. Classical test theory analyses were used to evaluate scale reliability and identify potential problematic items that were further examined from a substantive perspective using content validity survey. Confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory factor analysis were performed to evaluate the construct validity and assist further development of the scale. Analyses suggest a three-factor structure for the retained 19-item scale including managerial support, professional nursing role, and recognition, with reliability ranging from alpha of .859 to .959.

There is a high prevalence of smoking among nursing personnel, despite the fact that nursing is a health care profession. In Japan there are 4 types of licensed nursing professionals. However, the prevalence of smoking among different types of licensed personnel has not been clarified. We attempted to clarify the prevalence of smoking among the various types of licensed nursing personnel and the factors associated with it. Among the members of the Japanese Nursing Association, 6000 nurses were randomly selected. The participants were sent a questionnaire on smoking habits, personal characteristics, lifestyle habits, and employment status by mail. Current smokers accounted for 1.3% of public health nurses, 4.0% of midwives, 8.2% of registered nurses, and 16.3% of assistant nurses. The license type of nursing personnel was a factor significantly associated with current smoking.

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between public health nurses' holistic nursing and social justice advocacy competencies in terms of their attitudes toward sustainable development goals. Design: Cross‐sectional survey. Sample: The study sample consisted of 384 public health nurses. Measurements: Data were collected with the personal information form, the Attitudes toward Sustainable Development Scale, the Holistic Nursing Competence Scale, and the Social Justice Advocacy Scale. Results: The sub‐dimensions of environment, public, education, and economy were found to significantly affect social justice advocacy, and the indirect effects of 0.191, 0.222, 0.205, and 0.201 were found to be statistically significant with the inclusion of holistic nursing competence in the model, respectively. It was found to explain 32%, 30%, 29%, and 22% of the total effect, respectively. Conclusion: It supports the claim that developing public health nurses' holistic nursing competence and social justice advocacy skills is an important criterion for achieving sustainable development goals. The connection between community healthcare providers and available community‐based programs is often weak. For community members to be connected with services, a strong referral link between providers and programs is paramount. The Referral Express and Central Hub (REACH) project was born out of this need for Nurse–Family Partnership (NFP) program sites in the Denver Metro area of Colorado to be better connected and coordinated with local referral sources. The objective of the REACH pilot was to create a centralized referral system and determine its feasibility in practice. After a 12‐month pilot, this innovative referral system supported the increase in a number of referral partners to Denver Metro area sites, an increase in clients served across the Denver Metro area, as well as an increase in the "refer to enroll" rate which increased by 37%. The success of the pilot of REACH led the developers to test the process on a second program, Child First, which was also successful. REACH has proved to be sustainable and continues to operate for both programs. Additionally, REACH acts as a consultant to NFP sites outside the Denver Metro area, in the state of Colorado, as each site works to increase its relationships with referral partners. Postpartum depression (PPD) is a mental health disorder that affects 10%–15% women globally. Longitudinal and meta-analyses have consistently demonstrated the negative impacts of PPD on both the affected mothers and subsequent infant development. Given the consideration that antidepressant side effects in breastfeeding infants and the cost-effectiveness considerations of psychotherapies, attention has been paid towards the promising role of social support interventions in order to prevent and reduce the PPD symptoms. Confirming the assertion, this narrative review examines the potential of five social support interventions to ameliorate PPD-related maternal and infant outcomes. The wide implications of psychoeducational strategy, nurses' supportive and non-directive counselling and home-visiting approach are outlined. Furthermore, the evidence underlying the role of peer support, culturally tailored intervention and community-based participatory approach in PPD is elucidated. In clinical practice, this review reinforce the roles of discharge educational intervention led by the experienced nurse during the postpartum stay, in order to maintain psychological mental health among the postpartum mothers. More importantly, the skilled and competence public health nurses act as valuable assets in treating PPD, and this effective treatment alternative should be considered by healthcare planners. In future, major investigations will be strategized to discover the synergistic effects of combined social support approaches to yield a better outcome in the prevention and treatment of PPD. Public health nursing is grounded in public health ideologies and fundamental nursing values. Researchers have argued that ethical responsibility from the perspective of the nurse is an understudied phenomenon. This meta-ethnography provides in-depth knowledge of how public health nurses (PHNs) experience ethical responsibility when working to prevent injury and disease, and promote health and well-being in children, young people and their families. There are reciprocal findings across the 10 included studies. The findings reveal that these nurses often feel alone, have worries and uncertainties and are afraid of doing wrong. They describe unclear boundaries in their work, creating a heightened sense of responsibility. PHNs fight lonely battles. Yet they show courage and commitment and are ready to stand up and fight for children and families who do not receive adequate care. A line of argument is developed and the metaphorical phrase Chivalrous knights in moral armour is used to express the authors' overall interpretations of the findings. Reflection on the findings shows how the different dimensions of ethical responsibility are interconnected. The nurses' ethical sensitivity enables them to feel compassion for others and they show indignation when vulnerable others are not treated with dignity and respect. Indignation and compassion are interrelated, and when human life and dignity are threatened, the ethical demand to respond emerges. Indignation is a precursor to moral courage, and the nurses' moral sensitivity and respect for their clients emboldens them to stand up for vulnerable others. The findings also illustrate the paradoxical nature of freedom. Freedom of choice due to unclear boundaries heightens the nurses' sense of responsibility. Background: Child maltreatment is a global problem that puts children at risk of mental illness, substance abuse, and premature death. Interdisciplinary collaboration is important in preventing and detecting child maltreatment. In Norway, children undergo universal preventive health assessments and receive complimentary follow-up care from specialized public health nurses in child and family health clinics. These nurses conduct regular check-ups and home visits to monitor children for signs of maltreatment. Objective: The objective of this study is to describe how public health nurses at child and family health clinics follow the National Clinical Guidelines to prevent and detect child maltreatment, with a particular focus on clinical procedures and interdisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, we aim to determine factors that are associated with identification of child maltreatment. Design: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among public health nurses working in primary care between October 24th and December 31st, 2022. Public health nurses who worked with children aged 0–5 years and had consultations with families were eligible to participate, resulting in 554 responses. The study employed descriptive analysis, including frequency, percentage and mean, as well as a two-step logistic regression analysis. The study was approved by the relevant authority, and informed consent was obtained through questionnaire completion. Results: The public health nurses in this study displayed strong adherence to the guidelines and utilized various comprehensive assessment procedures to monitor child well-being, growth, and development. However, there was limited and infrequent collaboration with other professionals, such as child protection services, general practitioners, and hospitals. Most public health nurses reported occasional suspicion of child maltreatment, with age and years of experience in child and family clinics influencing these suspicions. Older public health nurses were more likely to suspect physical violence, while those with less than two years of experience reported less experience in suspecting maltreatment. Additional education increased the probability of suspecting sexual violence. Conclusions: This study provides insights into the practices of public health nurses in Norway regarding the detection and prevention of child maltreatment in child and family clinics. While adherence to guidelines is strong, suspicion of maltreatment is relatively rare. Collaboration across agencies is crucial in addressing child maltreatment. Age and experience may influence the detection of maltreatment. Improved collaboration, targeted guidelines, and ongoing professional development are needed to enhance child protection. Aim: The study goal was to inform the creation of a blueprint for an advanced practice nurse (APN) in public health. Background: No internationally accepted standard for an APN in public health exists. Activities of public health nurses (PHN) traditionally have centered on health promotion and disease prevention, but many have added other population‐based activities such as chronic and acute disease treatment. Introduction: An APN in public health is needed to address the global challenges threatening the physical, social, and mental health of populations worldwide. Methods: This qualitative study was comprised of six focus groups, each containing a different group of stakeholders (n = 40). Study results followed the requirements of the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ). Findings: Two major themes emerged: the APN role in public health and core expectations. From the APN role theme, four subthemes emerged on APN domains of public health practice and functions. From the core expectations theme, nine subthemes emerged on the APN's qualifications and behaviors. Discussion: Agreement among stakeholders was found in the nine core expectations; however, among the four different visions of an APN in public health, two fit a population‐based model rather than the traditional PHN model. Conclusions: A single APN role in public health is insufficient to address the breadth and complexity of today's global challenges as detailed by the sustainable development goals. Due to the interaction between health and the biopsychosocial environments, we need APNs with different areas of expertise. Implication for nursing policy: Nurses working at universities, in public health services, and as healthcare policymakers are needed to create a multistage strategy that gradually introduces several different types of APNs in public health. Background: Despite news reports of morally distressing situations resulting from complex and demanding community-care delivery in Canada, there has been little research on the topic of ethical conflicts experienced by community-based health care professionals. Research aim: To identify ethical conflicts experienced by community nurses. Research design: Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and then relevant text was extracted and condensed using qualitative content analysis. This research was part of a larger grounded theory project examining how community nurses manage ethical conflict. Research context and participants: Community nurses, including 13 public health nurses and 11 home care nurses from two Canadian provinces, were interviewed. Ethical considerations: Study approval was granted by the Health Research Ethics Authority of Newfoundland and Labrador and by provincial health authorities. Findings: Seven ethical conflicts were identified and assigned to one of two groups. In the grouping categorized as challenges with obligations or risks, the ethical conflicts were: (1) screening for child developmental issues knowing there is a lack of timely early intervention services; (2) encountering inequities in the health care system; (3) not fulfilling principles, goals, and initiatives of primary and secondary prevention; and (4) feeling powerless to advocate for clients. The remaining ethical conflicts were categorized as challenges with process, risks, and consequences, and were: (5) jeopardizing therapeutic relationships while reporting signs of a child at risk; (6) managing confidentiality when neighbors are clients; and (7) supporting client autonomy and decision-making but uncertain of the consequences. Conclusions: Research investigation will continue to be important to raise awareness and mobilize ethics supports as health care services are steadily shifted from institutional to community settings. Moreover, with heightened potential for communicable disease outbreaks across international borders from global warming, community nurses around the world will continue to be required to address ethically-difficult care situations with competence and compassion. Aim: To explore how public health nurses in child and family health centres experience detecting and preventing child maltreatment. Design: Qualitative study. Methods: Fourteen semi‐structured individual interviews with public health nurses who worked in 11 different child and family health centres were conducted. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Three themes were identified: (i) integrating knowledge to prevent child maltreatment as part of their everyday job, (ii) striving hard to detect child maltreatment and (iii) experiencing the assignment to be complex and demanding. Conclusion: Despite extensive experience, knowledge and following the guidelines, public health nurses in this study had difficulties finding children exposed to child maltreatment in child and family health centres. Public health nurses called for mutual multidisciplinary cooperation with other services and organizational facilitation, such as enough time and clear guidelines to effectively address this issue. Implications for Practice: This study provides knowledge about how public health nurses work with child maltreatment at the Child and Family Health Center, which can serve as valuable foundation for further research as well for collaborating services. Aims: There is a paucity of data regarding the care and support provided by Norwegian school health services to siblings of children with complex care needs. Public health nurses are an integral part of these universal services, which focus on health promotion and disease prevention in primary and secondary schools. This study aimed to explore health promotion interventions by public health nurses for siblings in Norwegian schools and to identify regional differences. Methods: An online national questionnaire was distributed to Norwegian public health nurses and leaders of public health nursing services (N = 487). The questions were related to how the nurses support siblings of children with complex care needs. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. An inductive thematic analysis of free‐text comments was conducted. Ethical Approval: The study was approved by the Norwegian Centre for Research Data. Results: The majority of public health nursing leaders (67%) reported that the services in their municipality had no system to identify siblings or to provide them with routine care. However, 26% of public health nurses reported that routine support was provided to siblings. Regional differences were identified. Study Limitations: This study included responses from 487 PHNs from all four health regions in Norway. The study design is limited and gives a brief outline of the current situation. Further data are needed to provide in‐depth knowledge. Conclusions: This survey provides important knowledge for health authorities and professionals working with siblings, about inadequate support and regional differences in care provided to siblings by school health services. COVID‐19 pandemic brings to light similarities to the 1918 influenza pandemic, one of the deadliest outbreaks in United States history. The work of the Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service also referred to the public health nurses for that time, was a critical part of the New York City response. This case study examined Lillian Wald's leadership in directing the public health nursing response in New York City during the second wave of the influenza pandemic, from September through December of 1918. A historical social framework was used. Primary sources included the Lillian Wald Papers in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Columbia University in New York, Wald's (1934) Windows on Henry Street, medical, public health and nursing documents, journals, and newspaper articles published during the early 20th century. Secondary source material include works by historians Sarah Abrams, Arlene Keeling, Karen Buhler‐Wilkerson, Sandra Lewenson, John Barry, and Alfred Crosby. Key findings included developing a community wide strategic plan, using data driven decisions, implementing visiting nursing services, teaching in the home, and maintaining a diverse workforce. Lessons learned can guide leadership in emergency planning, system change, infection control and disease prevention, all familiar practices of public health nursing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to describe public health nurses' assessment of the background factors of familicide, factors that promote or prevent identification of these factors and familicide‐related education. The researchers sought to provide information that would help public health nurses recognise and prevent family tragedies as well as the development of education. Public health nurses (n = 85) working at clinics in Finland were surveyed using an electronic questionnaire. The quantitative data was described through statistics and open questions were analysed using inductive content analysis. Approximately one‐third (33 per cent) of the nurses considered their ability to identify the background factors of familicide as very poor or poor, and most (87 per cent) felt that they needed additional training. The identification of background factors is hindered by a lack of both resources and multiprofessionalism, fragmentation of care conditions, fear, cultural challenges, and education inadequacies. Background: Breastfeeding continuation rates are low in Ireland. The Breastfeeding Observation and Assessment Tool (BOAT) was developed to assist public health nurses in assessing breastfeeding challenges; however, little is known of its actual usage, the level of training experienced or desired by public health nurses, or their level of confidence in the support they provide to breastfeeding mothers. Research Aim: To identify the current practices and support needs of public health nurses who provide breastfeeding support in Ireland. Method: An online questionnaire was devised to collect respondents' confidence with breastfeeding issues, caseload, and practices. It was distributed to public health nurses with a current child health caseload in one Community Healthcare Organization. Mann Whitney U tests were used to ascertain the relationship between public health nurses' confidence level and those with qualifications in midwifery or as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Results: The survey was completed by 66 public health nurses. Only 14 respondents (21.2%) indicated that they always used the BOAT. The most common reason for not doing so was a lack of education on its use (n = 17, 25.8%). Postholders also certified as IBCLCs were considered by participants to be the most appropriate professionals to resolve certain breastfeeding issues. Confidence levels to manage breastfeeding issues were highest among public health nurses with IBCLC credentialing (U = 12.5, p =.001) while no difference was seen when comparing those with a midwifery degree to those without (U = 184.0, p =.92). Face-to-face workshops and blended-learning approaches were ranked as the preferred formats for breastfeeding education (Median rank = 2). Conclusions: Breastfeeding education incorporating a face-to-face component is needed to support public health nurses who work with breastfeeding mothers, as is prioritization of recruitment in the community of public health nurses with IBCLC credentials. Introduction: United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted as a plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity by 2030. SDG 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages, and other goals focus on reduction of inequality, abolition of poverty, decent work for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions. A community pediatric clinic, Kidscope, was established in a vulnerable Irish community offering free developmental assessment and onward referral of children 0 to 6 years. The Kidscope model involves multiagency input with local public health nurses (PHNs) acting as fundamental partners in the provision of specialist early years support to vulnerable children and families. This study evaluates PHN involvement in Kidscope in the context of SDGs. Objective: To record and understand PHN roles within Kidscope and to capture their contribution to achieving SDGs in a disadvantaged Irish community. Methods: Qualitative stakeholder analysis and mapping design. Snowball sampling identified participants. Data collection involved scoping interviews, questionnaires, one-to-one interviews, and a focus group. A Stakeholder Matrix Table was developed in line with the guiding framework. Transcripts were thematically analyzed. Results: PHNs are key stakeholders in Kidscope contributing to clinic development, delivery, and sustainability. Six themes were identified: lead referrers, in-clinic support, learning and education, child and family follow-up, specialist early years role, and partnership working. PHNs contribute to six SDGs through the Kidscope model. Conclusion: PHNs are fundamental partners in achieving SDGs in a disadvantaged Irish community through ameliorating childhood developmental delay by intercepting the gap within Ireland's early intervention system and disrupting the impact exclusion to healthcare has on vulnerable children and their families. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe the alleged abuse of social care clients committed by nurses and other social services employees and actions as well as sanctions that followed the alleged abuse. Design: A retrospective study using a descriptive qualitative analysis. Methods: The data comprised mandatory reports made by social service employees under the Social Welfare Act. This study focused on the reported abuses of clients (n = 75) by social services employees from 11 October 2016 to 31 December 2020 in Finland. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis and quantification. Results: The majority of the reports were submitted practical nurses and other nursing personnel and by registered nurses. The severity of the abuse was most often mild or moderate. The most common abusers were nurses. The types of alleged abuse committed by professionals were as follows: (1) neglect of care, (2) physical violence/strong‐arm treatments, (3) neglect of hygiene, (4) inappropriate or threatening behaviour and (5) sexual abuse. The actions and sanctions that followed the alleged abuse were: (1) discussing the situation together, requesting an explanation, initiating hearing or defining developmental measures, (2) initiating disciplinary actions and providing verbal or written warnings, (3) dismissing or terminating the employee and (4) initiating a police investigation. Conclusion: Nurses are an important group working in social services and might also be involved in cases of abuse. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: It is important that risks, wrongdoings and abuses are reported. Transparent reporting indicates strong professional ethics. Introduction and aims: The aim was to explore clinical decision support (CDS) use in the practice of primary healthcare nurses. The objectives were to recognize to what extent nurses (registered nurses, public health nurses, and practical nurses) use CDS, what factors were associated with the CDS used, what kind of organizational support nurses need, and what were nurses' views about CDS development needs. Methods: The study was conducted with a cross-sectional study design, using an electronic questionnaire developed for this purpose. The questionnaire contained 14 structured questions and nine open-ended questions. The sample consisted of randomly selected primary healthcare organizations (N=19) in Finland. Quantitative data were analyzed using cross-tabulation and Pearson's chi-squared test, and qualitative data with quantification. Results: A total of 267 healthcare professionals (age range 22-63 years) volunteered to participate. Participants were mainly registered nurses, public health nurses, and practical nurses (46.8, 24, and 22.9%, respectively). Overall, 59% of the participants had never used CDS. The majority (92%) found it necessary to develop nursing-specific content for CDS. The most commonly used features were medication recommendations and warnings (74%), reminders (56%), and calculators (42%). Half of the participants (51%) had not received training on the use of CDS. The older age of participants was associated with the feeling of not having enough training to use CDS (P=0.039104). Nurses felt that CDS was helpful in their clinical work and decision-making, promoting evidencebased practice, and narrowing the research-into-practice gap, improving patient safety and the quality of care, and helping those who are new in their work. Background: Public health nurses are essential in reacting to and controlling pandemics. Their responsibilities have changed as the globe faces more intricate health issues relating to newly developing infectious illnesses. This literature review aims to identify suggestions to enhance public health nurses' practice and offer a thorough knowledge of the changing responsibilities of public health nurses in the era of pandemics. Methods: The important themes, difficulties, and possibilities connected to public health nursing during pandemics were highlighted after relevant papers were found through a thorough search of databases. Conclusion: Public health nurses play a vital role in combating new infectious illnesses, utilising technology, bolstering health systems, fostering interprofessional teamwork, advocating for health equality, engaging communities, and supporting mental health and wellbeing. However, they deal with serious issues such as a lack of skilled labour, poor funding, and quickly advancing knowledge. Enhancing workforce planning and development, bolstering public health infrastructure, creating and disseminating evidencebased guidelines and protocols, encouraging interprofessional collaboration and education, addressing health disparities and promoting health equity, and supporting continuous learning and professional development are all recommendations for improving pandemic preparedness and response. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were the frontline and tireless healthcare workers providing their services to patients. At the same time, the role of nurses was not only limited to providing health care to COVID-19 patients, but was also crucial on the public health issues. For example, nurses played a key role in primary health care through both COVID-19 vaccination and through the collection of samples for coronavirus diagnostic testing in health centers, local health units and mobile health units. For example, nurses in primary health care were responsible for receiving, storing and safely administering vaccines against COVID-19. The cornerstones of public health nursing applications combine the principles and values of public health and nursing to create the right conditions for promoting the health of individuals and communities. Continuing education of nurses is extremely important, as they need to constantly update and enrich their knowledge in a clinical environment that is constantly changing, as exemplified by the huge changes brought about by the pandemic worldwide. There are several challenges and opportunities for public health nurses after the COVID-19 pandemic. The role of nurses is particularly important in the case of vulnerable populations. The role of school nurses is particularly important, as children are a vulnerable population group as they rely on adults to meet their needs. As children are in school for a large part of the day, everyone involved in their care should work together to meet their needs as best as possible. Japanese public health nurses (PHNs) at public health centers (PHCs) have played critical roles in infection prevention and control during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to examine the actual pandemic-related experiences of PHNs and the relation between their experiences, individual resilience, two components of organizational resilience (system and human resilience), and burnout. An analysis of the responses of 351 PHNs revealed that mid-level PHNs scored higher in experience and lower in organizational resilience compared with those in other positions. More than 80% of respondents experienced inappropriate staff allocation. Multiple regression revealed that burnout was positively associated with the components of the experience of PHNs and negatively with individual and human resilience. In hierarchical multiple regression with depersonalization as the dependent variable, the sign of system resilience reversed from negative to positive when human resilience was added. The results highlight the need to prepare for future health crises including establishing a system with enough personnel, promoting human resilience such as collaboration among staff members, and burnout prevention measures, especially among mid-level PHNs. The study also described alternative approaches to comprehend system resilience—namely, a suppression variable of human resilience, promotion of depersonalization, and multicollinearity—and the need for further research on organizational resilience. Background: In an increasingly multicultural society, cultural competence and transcultural self-efficacy of public health nurses is important for providing culturally congruent care for client from diverse cultural background. To improv this, it is needed tailored and effective educational program based on the cultural competence educational needs. This study investigated the moderating effect of cultural competence educational needs on the relationship between transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 217 public health nurses in Korea using convenience sampling from August 2018 to January 2019. A direct questionnaire was used to collect data. Study variables were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and the Hayes PROCESS macro (Model 1) moderation model. Results: The mean scores for transcultural self-efficacy, cultural competence educational needs, and cultural competence were 62.33 ± 11.08, 58.19 ± 15.08, and 97.96 ± 17.09, respectively. Transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence educational needs were positively associated with cultural competence. In the tested model, cultural competence educational needs had a conditional moderating effect on the relationship between transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence. The positive association between transcultural self-efficacy and cultural competence was significant at low, medium, and high levels of cultural competence educational needs and stronger for those with high needs. Conclusions: Cultural competence educational needs may be an important determinant of cultural competence among public health nurses. Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic has seriously affected elderly individuals and it has been associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. This study was conducted to examine the relationship between fear of COVID‐19, social isolation and depression in elderly individuals. Methods: The study is a descriptive type. The sample consisted of 362 elderly people. The study data were collected using the Introductory Information Form, the Fear of COVID‐19 Scale, the Nottingham Health Profile Social Isolation Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale‐Short Form. Results: It was determined there was a positive and moderate relationship between fear of COVID‐19 and depression and social isolation, and a positive and high relationship between social isolation and depression, and the results were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Public health nurses, during epidemic periods, should help elderly individuals manage their fears about the disease. Objective: This study investigated the association between receiving off‐the‐job training and the involvement of public health nurses in local healthcare planning. Design: A nationwide, cross‐sectional study design. Methods: We sent self‐report questionnaires to 2,185 public health nurses with experience in developing local healthcare plans in Japan since 2013 and collected information related to three main categories: demographic data, involvement in local healthcare planning and strategies for healthcare planning. Results: We received 1,281 responses (return rate of 58.6%), of which 231 did not meet the inclusion criteria. Thus, we analysed 1,050 valid responses. Among the 1,050 respondents, 496 (47.2%) had received off‐the‐job training in healthcare planning. A subsequent logistic regression analysis revealed that the following factors were associated with this achievement: holding a managerial position, receiving healthcare planning education at the undergraduate level, having mentors regarding the promotion of it, partially conducting cross‐sectional coordination and conducting groupwork with community‐dwelling residents. Nursing theories focus on individual and community care and human relationships in unique contexts. One of these contexts is the community in which a theory-based systematic nursing practice process is warranted. This article describes a theory of Community Caring for Public Health Nursing (CCPHN), which is grounded in four nursing metaparadigms by Fawcett: persons, environment, health, and nursing. This theory has three assumptions: (1) community caring fosters care demonstrations in nursing, (2) caring communities comprise members with community attachments united by their common values rather than rigid customs, and (3) community caring is expressed competently in mutual-care practices. From these assumptions, a nursing perspective supporting the community caring process is exhibited as the expression of caring by public health nurses toward supportive and promotive nursing processes that enhance a caring community. Nurses play critical roles in leading the establishment of caring communities. In future research, it is critical to verify whether building a caring community by public health nursing practices based on this theory of CCPHN contributes to the health and well-being of the people in the community. A disaster can be delineated as an occurrence that threatens and disrupts people's lives and means of subsistence caused by natural, non-natural, and human factors, resulting in loss of life, environmental damage, loss of property, and psychological consequences. As a flexible profession that covers all conditions, nurses, particularly PHNs, are expected to be limited to providing care in the community and required to work in conditions of disaster emergency response. This literature review aims to identify the knowledge and perceived ability to practice of PHNs in the disaster emergency response phase. The study is based on a systematic review approach. The source of information for the present study derived from Internet-based literature, in the form of research results from online libraries at the local, national and international levels. Totally 43 references were used to establish this review study. The knowledge and perceived ability to practice PHNs in the disaster response phase will typically be identified in six viewpoints: warning, triage of disasters, saving and stabilizing lives, surveillance, risk communication, and technical skills. Therefore, handling situations among the alert and steady states is quite atypical; hence nurses must skillfully and technically deal with these conditions.

The Nurse‐Family Partnership is a targeted parenting intervention designed to improve maternal and child health. In Canada it is delivered exclusively by public health nurses who provide complex care to adolescent girls and young women. A process evaluation was conducted to better understand the experiences of public health nurses delivering the Nurse‐Family Partnership program in Canada. Although the traditional qualitative data analysis led to the creation of significant findings and clinical implications, it lacked the "heart" of public health nursing practice. Through a reflective process, and to present an evocative account of the multifaceted nursing care provided by the study participants, direct quotes were used to create a poetic display of nurses' experiences. Background: Effective prevention programs to address the high prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity and the concomitant health consequences have been warranted. Objective: To improve dietary habits and weight status among Norwegian children with overweight/obesity in the primary care setting. Design: A 6-month non-randomized cluster-controlled intervention among 137 children, aged 6-12 years, with overweight/obesity and their parents. Intervention and control groups were recruited by public health nurses and followed-up by 12 Healthy Life Centers across Norway. The intervention group received individual family counseling and participated in nutrition courses and physical activity groups. A frequency questionnaire assessing sociodemographic characteristics and dietary habits was completed by the parents. Trained public health nurses measured height and weight using standardized methods to calculate body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-scores. Results: The intervention resulted in an increased odds of consuming evening meals (OR: 3.42), a decreased availability of salty snacks (β = -0.17), a decreased intake of salty snacks (-0.18), an increased consumption of water (β = 0.20), and a decreased estimated total intake of energy (β = -0.17), carbohydrates (β = -0.17), mono- and disaccharides (β = -0.21), sucrose (β = -0.24), and saturated fatty acids (β = --0.17). The intervention directly predicted lower BMI z-score (β = -0.17), and post-treatment levels of energy (β = -0.65), saturated fat (β = 0.43), and total carbohydrates (β = 0.41) were directly linked to BMI z-score after intervention. Age and sex were indirectly associated with BMI after intervention through energy and saturated fat intake. Conclusions: The intervention had a beneficial impact on nutrient intake and weight status among children with overweight/obesity. Adolescent health (AH) is an integral part of public health with the goal of improving the healthy development, safety, and well-being of adolescents because the behavioral patterns established during this period influence the health status of the adolescents and the risk of developing chronic diseases during adulthood. Adolescence being a time of great physical and psychological change, many social and physical conditions as well as behavioral pattern can impact AH and heighten the risk of illness and diseases. This makes adolescents to be susceptible to various health issues by nature because of their stages of development, which affects their ability to make safe decisions, and the need to rely on significant others for support. Other factors like desire for greater autonomy, pressure to conform to peers, exploration of sexual identity, increased access to and use of technology, violence and sexual abuse, social and cultural norms, family circumstances, emotional and physical environment of the adolescents contribute significantly to adolescents' health issues. Therefore, nurses have significant roles to play to ensure optimal growth and development of the adolescents and to prevent and reduce the impact of changes associated with adolescence on the health and well-being of the adolescents. We examined how well-baby care nurses perceive communication with parents regarding their children's obesity and identified main communication barriers. Pediatric obesity is a significant public health concern, and health care personnel are among the first to detect overweight and the first to offer assistance to parents. Yet, research suggests that when nurses identify a weight problem in children, they may have trouble initiating this discussion. This qualitative study, using semi-structured interviews with 20 public health nurses, addressed potential obstacles nurses face when discussing young children's weight. Lack of time and workload were the most significant barriers to meaningful conversation with parents. Instructing parents toward a healthy lifestyle, while specifically relating to the child's weight, is perceived as part of the nurse's role, but execution was flawed. Trust and good communication between the nurse and parents are seen as critical ingredients to provide future guidance around a child's weight. Nurses want parents to feel comfortable to discuss children's weight problems, but are worried that such a discussion may impair previously established trust. Nurses should receive comprehensive training to address childhood obesity, including specific communication skills to implement when discussing this stigmatized and sensitive topic. As child abuse becomes increasingly serious, the activities of nursing professionals during pregnancy have become more important. This study aimed to describe public health nurses' (PHNs) activities for child abuse prevention, focusing on how they approach pregnant women at possible risk to enable early prevention. A qualitative design was applied. Fifteen PHNs in Japan participated and were interviewed about 23 cases using semistructured interviews focus on the series of PHN's activity. Transcripts were coded, and the codes were categorized into several categories, and content analysis was conducted. PHNs' activities included exploring at‐risk cases by various means, creating opportunities to begin individual support, examining the risk of abuse specifically to predict suspected abuse after childbirth, encouraging behavior to reduce the risk of abuse, waiting consciously for a while, expanding support systems for cases. If PHNs anticipated that the situation would not stabilize, they returned to creating an opportunity to begin individual support and repeated the process. PHNs' had six activities, which were repeated depending on the magnitude of the risk of abuse. It was suggested that these activities are aimed at long‐term child‐rearing support. Public health nurses (PHNs) use principles of epidemiology in their work with communities; however, teaching these concepts at the baccalaureate level can be challenging. To reinforce the epidemiologic concepts taught in the classroom, two nursing faculty in our baccalaureate nursing program developed a population health project that allows students to explore concepts of epidemiology within the context of a population health concern. This article describes how the project provides students with a realistic opportunity to research the health issue. As a part of the project, students collect and analyze data about the health concern at the county, state, and national level. The project also requires students to identify local agencies who provide services for people who are impacted by the health issue and describe their role and function within the community. Furthermore, students discuss the roles and responsibilities of nurses in managing the population health concern under investigation. In doing so, students recognize how epidemiology informs population level nursing care. If nursing students understand epidemiological concepts, they will be better prepared to educate the communities they serve after graduation when a population health crisis, such as the recent COVID‐19 pandemic, occurs. Evidence points to nurses as possessing particular skills which are important for public health leadership; in particular, investigators have found that a nurse public health director is strongly associated with positive health department performance. To better understand this association and to guide the effective deployment of nurse leaders, researchers sought to explore the specific leadership strategies used by nurse public health directors, using a critical thematic analysis approach to examine these leadership strategies in the context of certain ideologies, power differentials, and social hierarchies. Data were collected via semistructured interviews conducted from July to September 2020 with 13 nurse public health directors from across the United States. Major themes illustrate a distinct picture of the nursing approach to public health leadership: (a) approaching their work with an other‐focused lens, (b) applying theoretical knowledge, (c) navigating the political side of their role, and (d) leveraging their nursing identity. Findings articulate the nurse public health director's distinctive combination of skills which reflect the interprofessional nature of public health nursing practice. Objective: Public health nurses foster self‐help groups that are intended to solve health problems and improve the health of older people. This study aims to clarify how public health nurses foster such self‐help groups. Design: This is a qualitative study that utilizes one‐to‐one semi‐structured interviews. Sample: The participants comprised 11 full‐time public health nurses who had experience in fostering self‐help groups and had at least 5 years of experience as public health nurses. Measurements: Interview transcripts were created, and a qualitative analysis was performed inductively. Results: In total, 33 themes, 14 theme clusters, and four categories were extracted. The categories were as follows: coordinating with relevant occupations and residents to collect community information and solve health problems, organizing classes from health promotion to member‐centered group activities, ensuring group development support and establishing a support system, and supporting leaders behind the scenes. Conclusions: Public health nurses begin by gathering information about a given community and sharing local health problems with public health authorities and residents. The nurses build trusting partnerships with members and assign appropriate roles to them to better address their problems. Objectives: To examine the effectiveness of group cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for postpartum depression (PPD) delivered by public health nurses with little to no previous psychiatric training at improving depression, worry, social support and the mother-infant relationship.Methods: Mothers (n = 141) living in Ontario, Canada with Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale Scores ≥10 and an infant <12 months of age were randomized to receive nine weekly 2-h sessions of in-person group CBT for PPD delivered by two public health nurses plus treatment as usual (TAU; experimental group) or TAU alone (control group). Primary outcomes were change in EPDS score and current major depressive disorder (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview) assessed immediately post-treatment (T2). Secondary outcomes included maternal worry, social support, and quality of the mother-infant relationship. All outcomes were assessed again six months post-treatment (T3).Results: Participants in the experimental group had statistically significantly greater reductions in PPD symptoms immediately post-treatment (T2) (B = -5.35, p < 0.01), were more likely to manifest a clinically significant improvement in EPDS scores (≥4 points; OR = 3.44, 95%CI: 1.49-7.94), and no longer have symptoms consistent with current MDD (OR = 5.31, 95% CI: 1.78-15.83). Six months post-treatment (T3), experimental group participants had higher odds of clinically significant PPD improvement (OR = 5.10, 95%CI: 1.89-13.78), while 25% of the experimental group and 70% of remaining control group participants reported current MDD (p < 0.01). Statistically significant improvements in worry and the mother-infant relationship were also observed, decreases maintained at six months post-treatment.Conclusions: Public health nurses with little to no previous psychiatric training can be trained to deliver effective group CBT for PPD to improve depression, worry, and the mother-infant relationship. Task shifting PPD treatment with group CBT to public health nurses could improve treatment uptake and lead to better outcomes for mothers, families, and the healthcare system.(Trial Registration NCT03039530). Recent national initiatives in nursing and public health have emphasized the need for a robust public health nursing (PHN) workforce. In this article, we analyze the extent to which recent national enumeration surveys base their counts of this workforce on the definitions, scope, and standards for practice and practice competencies of the PHN nursing specialty. By and large, enumeration surveys continue to rely on practice setting to define the PHN workforce, which is an insufficient approach for meeting the goals of major nursing and public health initiatives. We make recommendations for the development of new standards for PHN enumeration to strengthen the broader public health infrastructure and evaluate PHN contributions to population-level outcomes. Objectives. To examine public health nurse (PHN) intervention tailoring through the Colorado Nurse Support Program (NSP). Our 2 specific aims were to describe the NSP program and its outcomes and to determine the effects of modifying interventions on short- and long-term outcomes among NSP clients. Methods. In our retrospective causal investigation of 150 families in Colorado in 2018–2019, intervention effects were modeled via longitudinal modified treatment policy analyses. Results. Families served by PHNs improved in terms of knowledge, behavior, and status outcomes after receiving multidimensional, tailored home visiting interventions. Case management interventions provided in the first month of PHN home visits had lasting effects on behavior outcomes, and 2 additional case management interventions in the first month were estimated to have even more of an impact. Conclusions. Modern causal inference methods and real-world PHN data revealed a nuanced, fine-grained understanding of the real impact of tailored PHN interventions. States across the country have been experiencing a steady decline in public health nursing workforce, including North Carolina (NC). Objectives: To better understand retention in the NC Public Health Nurses (PHNs) workforce through an assessment of perceptions of the working environment, stress, intent to stay, and job satisfaction. Design: A cross‐sectional online survey using closed and open‐ended questions. Sample: The study population comprised of non‐supervisory PHNs (n = 672) working at NC local health departments (LHD). Measurements: Retention problem, working environment, and job satisfaction measures were adapted from the revised Casey‐Fink Registered Nurse Retention Survey© (2009) to fit public health settings. Results: Despite high levels of job satisfaction (79.76%, n = 473), 53% of respondents (n = 323) acknowledged a retention problem within their LHD; 35.32% (n = 203) planned to/considered leaving their position in the next 3 years for reasons other than retirement. ANOVAs and Kruskal Wallis Test results showed that those planning to leave had statistically lower scores on perceived working environment and job satisfaction and demonstrated higher negative stress levels. Conclusion: Like other states, NC is experiencing a PHN shortages predicted to worsen in coming years. To retain the current workforce, LHDs need to work to improve PHNs working environment, increase PHNs' pay, and alleviate stressors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A disaster can be delineated as an occurrence that threatens and disrupts people's lives and means of subsistence caused by natural, non-natural, and human factors, resulting in loss of life, environmental damage, loss of property, and psychological consequences. As a flexible profession that covers all conditions, nurses, particularly PHNs, are expected to be limited to providing care in the community and required to work in conditions of disaster emergency response. This literature review aims to identify the knowledge and perceived ability to practice of PHNs in the disaster emergency response phase. The study is based on a systematic review approach. The source of information for the present study derived from Internet-based literature, in the form of research results from online libraries at the local, national and international levels. Totally 43 references were used to establish this review study. The knowledge and perceived ability to practice PHNs in the disaster response phase will typically be identified in six viewpoints: warning, triage of disasters, saving and stabilizing lives, surveillance, risk communication, and technical skills. Therefore, handling situations among the alert and steady states is quite atypical; hence nurses must skillfully and technically deal with these conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors related to the practical utilization of community health needs assessment (CHNA) models that public health nurses (PHNs) learned in their fundamental education. Design: A nationwide questionnaire survey was conducted via postal mail. Sample: We randomly selected 630 public health institutes in Japan. The participants were 3397 full‐time novice and mid‐level PHNs. Measurements: The questionnaire included the participants' basic personal information, six items regarding the perception of CHNA with a 4‐point Likert scale, learned models in their undergraduate education, their utilization in practical settings, and the reasons for their answer in narrative form. Results: There were 951 valid responses. The results of logistic regression showed that the significant positively factors with model utilization were perception of CHNA as "not troublesome" or "not impossible as they learned," continuing education with 5 years of experience, and identification of the learned model in continuing education. Furthermore, the results of text mining showed the reasons for non‐utilization of the model included being "busy" and having a lack of "opportunity." Conclusions: This study showed the associated factors with rare utilization of a learned model for PHNs. These findings may suggest improvement of continuing education and development of an appropriate assessment model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
