The theory of surface wave generation, in viscous flows, is modified by replacing the linear-logarithmic shear velocity profile, in the air, with a model which links smoothly the linear and logarithmic layers through the buffer layer. This profile includes the effects of air flow turbulence using a damped mixing-length model. In the water, an exponential shear velocity profile is used. It is shown that this modified and coupled shear-velocity profile gives a better agreement with experimental data than the coupled linear-logarithmic, non smooth profile, (in the air)–exponential profile (in the water), widely used in the literature. We also give new insights on retrograde modes that are Doppler shifted by the surface velocity at the air-sea interface, namely on the threshold value of the surface current for the occurrence of a second unstable mode.

The generation of wind waves at the surface of a pre-existing underlying vertically sheared water flow of constant vorticity is considered. Emphasis is put on the role of the vorticity in water on wind-wave generation. The amplitude growth rate increases with the vorticity except for quite old waves. A limit to the wave energy growth is found in the case of negative vorticity, corresponding to the vanishing of the growth rate.

A strong earthquake (mb = 6.3; Ms = 6.1; Mw = 6.3) occurred on 21 November 2004 in the Dominica Passage separating Guadeloupe and Dominica, in the Lesser Antilles, and generated a weak tsunami with maximum amplitudes of +70 and -80 cm on neighbouring islands. We conducted field surveys on the islands of “Les Saintes”, in the immediate vicinity of the epicenter on November 27, 2004 and February 12, 2005, and report here on the resulting dataset.
