Alexander Pope's famous dictum that "The Sound must seem an Eccho to the Sense " usually is taken to advocate straightforwardly that poetic sound can and should imitate meaning, in a kind of onomatopoeia writ large. This essay contends, however, that the real complexity of the line has not been recognized. Pope conjures a "seem"-ingly stable relation between " Sound " and " Sense " only to destabilize both terms and to raise fundamental questions about the material stuff of language. This study intends to compare the onomatopoeia used in mainstream contemporary American comics in the superhero and fantasy genres and the ones used in mainstream contemporary Japanese manga in its two most popular segments: shōnen manga (manga for boys) and shōjo manga (manga for girls). It will focus on the manner in which the two languages try to reproduce sounds visually and their similarities and differences. It will also approach the many shapes and sizes they use to approximate the written word to the intended sound on a comic page. The great number of onomatopoeia in each language and their classification according to types of sound will also be commented, including mimetic words, since they are abundantly used in mainstream manga. The comparison should extend to the differences between the use of onomatopoeia in each culture, such as the alphabet, the writing, and the perception each of the two cultures has of the same type of sound and how they translate that into image. In this essay I explore a variety of experimental poetic tendencies produced in Spain during the twentienth century. Some of the most popular experimental poetic practices are visual poetry, sound poetry, phonetic poetry, computer poetry, video poetry, and mail art. Because these tendencies were not born in Spain we have to take into consideration international and historical avantgarde practices such as concretism, phonetic poetry, and others. I also study the different interests between multiple artistic languages employed in historical avant‐garde poetry and in more recent experimental poetry. Another aspect studied is the political background especially in the sixties and seventies in Spain and how it conditioned the development and durability of different groups and artistic expressions. Another important factor taken into consideration is the use and development of the different technologies available. Technology is not a medium in this kind of poetry but part of the message and for that purpose it can be used in different ways in the construction of a poem. Because of the complexity of the subject, and the difficulty of getting access to rare books and materials I give a panoramic view – with special attention to selected poems and authors – of the most visible experimental poetic manifestations produced in Spain. But there is a need to do more specialized studies in order to gain a better comprehension of these alternative poetic practices that are becoming more and more popular today.
