The theory of quaternionic operators has applications in several different fields, such as quantum mechanics, fractional evolution problems, and quaternionic Schur analysis, just to name a few. The main difference between complex and quaternionic operator theory is based on the definition of a spectrum. In fact, in quaternionic operator theory the classical notion of a resolvent operator and the one of a spectrum need to be replaced by the two S-resolvent operators and the S-spectrum. This is a consequence of the noncommutativity of the quaternionic setting. Indeed, the S-spectrum of a quaternionic linear operator T is given by the noninvertibility of a second order operator. This presents new challenges which make our approach to perturbation theory of quaternionic operators different from the classical case. In this paper we study the problem of perturbation of a quaternionic normal operator in a Hilbert space by making use of the concepts of S-spectrum and of slice hyperholomorphicity of the S-resolvent operators. For this new setting we prove results on the perturbation of quaternionic normal operators by operators belonging to a Schatten class and give conditions which guarantee the existence of a nontrivial hyperinvariant subspace of a quaternionic linear operator. In this paper we introduce fractional powers of quaternionic operators. Their definition is based on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and on the S-resolvent operators of the quaternionic functional calculus. The integral representation formulas of the fractional powers and the quaternionic version of Kato’s formula are based on the notion of S-spectrum of a quaternionic operator. The proofs of several properties of the fractional powers of quaternionic operators rely on the S-resolvent equation. This equation, which is very important and of independent interest, has already been introduced in the case of bounded quaternionic operators, but for the case of unbounded operators some additional considerations have to be taken into account. Moreover, we introduce a new series expansion for the pseudo-resolvent, which is of independent interest and allows to investigate the behavior of the S-resolvents close to the S-spectrum. In this paper, we introduce the Schatten class and the Berezin transform of quaternionic operators. The first topic is of great importance in operator theory, but it is also necessary to study the second one, which requires the notion of trace class operators, a particular case of the Schatten class. Regarding the Berezin transform, we give the general definition and properties. Then we concentrate on the setting of weighted Bergman spaces of slice hyperholomorphic functions. Our results are based on the S-spectrum of quaternionic operators, which is the notion of spectrum that appears in the quaternionic version of the spectral theorem and in the quaternionic S-functional calculus. The S -functional calculus is based on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and it defines functions of n -tuples of not necessarily commuting operators or of quaternionic operators. This calculus relays on the notion of S -spectrum and of S -resolvent operator. Since most of the properties that hold for the Riesz–Dunford functional calculus extend to the S -functional calculus, it can be considered its non commutative version. In this paper we show that the Taylor formula of the Riesz–Dunford functional calculus can be generalized to the S -functional calculus. The proof is not a trivial extension of the classical case because there are several obstructions due to the non commutativity of the setting in which we work that have to be overcome. To prove the Taylor formula we need to introduce a new series expansion of the S -resolvent operators associated to the sum of two n -tuples of operators. This result is a crucial step in the proof of our main results, but it is also of independent interest because it gives a new series expansion for the S -resolvent operators. Spectral theory on the S -spectrum was born out of the need to give quaternionic quantum mechanics a precise mathematical foundation (Birkhoff and von Neumann [8] showed that a general set theoretic formulation of quantum mechanics can be realized on real, complex or quaternionic Hilbert spaces). Then it turned out that spectral theory on S -spectrum has important applications in several fields such as fractional diffusion problems and, moreover, it allows one to define several functional calculi for n -tuples of noncommuting operators. With this paper we show that the spectral theory on the S -spectrum is much more general and it contains, just as particular cases, the complex, the quaternionic and the Clifford settings. In fact, the S -spectrum is well defined for objects in an algebra that has a complex structure and for operators in general Banach modules. We show that the abstract formulation of the S -functional calculus goes beyond quaternionic and Clifford analysis, indeed the S -functional calculus has a certain universality property. This fact makes the spectral theory on the S -spectrum applicable to several fields of operator theory and allows one to define functions of noncommuting matrix variables, and operator variables, as a particular case. In this paper, we introduce some integral transforms that map slice monogenic functions to monogenic functions. We then show that one of these integral transforms, which is based on the Cauchy formula of slice monogenic functions, is useful to define a functional calculus depending on a parameter for n-tuples of bounded operators. The theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions, introduced in recent years, has important applications in operator theory. The quaternionic version of this function theory and its Cauchy formula yield to a definition of the quaternionic version of the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus which is based on the notion of S-spectrum. This quaternionic functional calculus allows to define the quaternionic evolution operator which appears in the quaternionic version of quantum mechanics proposed by J. von Neumann and later developed by S. L. Adler. Generation results such as the Hille-Phillips-Yosida theorem have been recently proved. In this paper, we study the perturbation of the generator. The motivation of this study is that, as it happens in the classical case of closed complex linear operators, to verify the generation conditions of the Hille-Phillips-Yosida theorem, in the concrete cases, is often difficult. Thus in this paper we study the generation problem from the perturbation point of view. Precisely, given a quaternionic closed operator T that generates the evolution operator we study under which condition a closed operator P is such that T + P generates the evolution operator . In the recent years the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions has become an important tool to study two functional calculi for n -tuples of operators and also for its applications to Schur analysis. In particular, using the Cauchy formula for slice hyperholomorphic functions, it is possible to give the Fueter–Sce mapping theorem an integral representation. With this integral representation it has been defined a monogenic functional calculus for n -tuples of bounded commuting operators, the so called F -functional calculus. In this paper we show that it is possible to define this calculus also for n -tuples containing unbounded operators and we obtain an integral representation formula analogous to the one of the Riesz–Dunford functional calculus for unbounded operators acting on a complex Banach space. As we will see, it is not an easy task to provide the correct definition of the F -functional calculus in the unbounded case. In this paper we introduce and study a functional calculus for bicomplex linear bounded operators. The study is based on the decomposition of bicomplex numbers and of linear operators using the two nonreal idempotents. We show that, due to the presence of zero divisors in the bicomplex numbers, the spectrum of a bounded operator is unbounded. We therefore introduce a different spectrum (called reduced spectrum) which is bounded and turns out to be the right tool to construct the bicomplex holomorphic functional calculus. ü ä Slice monogenic functions have had a rapid development in the past few years. One of the main properties of such functions is that they allow the definition of a functional calculus, called S-functional calculus, for (bounded or unbounded) noncommuting operators. In the literature there exist two different definitions of slice monogenic functions that turn out to be equivalent under suitable conditions on the domains on which they are defined. Both the existing definitions are based on the validity of the Cauchy- Riemann equations in a suitable sense. The aim of this paper is to prove that slice monogenic functions belong to the kernel of the global operator defined by G(x)² := |x|² ∂\∂x0 + x ?j=1 xjn xj∂\∂xj, where x is the 1-vector part of the paravector x = x0 + x and n ? N. Despite the fact that G has nonconstant coefficients, we are able to prove that a subclass of functions in the kernel of G have a Cauchy formula. Moreover, we will study some relations among the three classes of functions and we show that the kernel of the operator G strictly contains the functions given by the other two definitions. Abstract: The S-spectrum has been introduced for the definition of the S-functional calculus that includes both the quaternionic functional calculus and a calculus for n-tuples of nonnecessarily commuting operators. The notion of right spectrum for right linear quaternionic operators has been widely used in the literature, especially in the context of quaternionic quantum mechanics. Moreover, several results in linear algebra, like the spectral theorem for quaternionic matrices, involve the right spectrum. Abstract: In the recent years, the notion of slice regular functions has allowed the introduction of a quaternionic functional calculus. In this paper, motivated also by the applications in quaternionic quantum mechanics, see Adler (1995) , we study the quaternionic semigroups and groups generated by a quaternionic (bounded or unbounded) linear operator . It is crucial to note that we consider operators with components that do not necessarily commute. Among other results, we prove the quaternionic version of the classical Hille–Phillips–Yosida theorem. This result is based on the fact that the Laplace transform of the quaternionic semigroup is the S-resolvent operator , the quaternionic analogue of the classical resolvent operator. The noncommutative setting entails that the results we obtain are somewhat different from their analogues in the complex setting. In this article we show that it is possible to construct a Koszul-type complex for maps given by suitable pairwise commuting matrices of polynomials. This result has applications to surjectivity theorems for constant coefficients differential operators of finite and infinite order. In particular, we construct a large class of constant coefficients differential operators which are surjective on the space of regular (or monogenic) functions on open convex sets.
