Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of different sizes from 7nm to 22nm have been prepared by simple Dirk and Charles chemical method and characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Fluorescence quenching of 1,4-dimethoxy-2,3-dimethylanthracene-9,10-dione (DMDMAD) by silver nanoparticles has been investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy to understand the role of quenching mechanism. Furthermore, the intensity of DMDMAD fluorescence emission peak decreases with decrease in the size of the Ag NPs. The fluorescence quenching rate constant and association constant for above system were determined using Stern-Volmer and Benesi-Hildebrand plots. The mechanism of DMDMAD fluorescence quenched by Ag NPs was discussed according to the Stern-Volmer equation. It has been observed that the quenching due to Ag NPs proceeds via dynamic quenching process. The distance between DMDMAD (donor) to Ag NPs (acceptor) and the critical energy transfer distance were estimated based on the Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) of various sizes have been successfully synthesized by the simple and convenient Creighton method using sodium borohydride as the reducing agent under microwave irradiation. Optical absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopic techniques were employed to investigate the effect of silver nanoparticles on the ground and excited state of 1,4-dimethoxy-3-methylanthracene-9,10-dione (DMMAD). The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak of the prepared silver colloidal solution was observed at 400nm. Fluorescence quenching of DMMAD by silver nanoparticles has been found to increase with increase in the size of Ag. The fluorescence quenching has been explained by Forster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) theory between DMMAD and silver nanoparticles. The Stern–Volmer quenching constant and Benesi–Hildebrand association constant for the above system were calculated. Abstract: Preferential solvation of 1,4-dihydroxy-3-methylanthracene-9,10-dione (DHMAD) has been investigated using optical absorption and fluorescence emission techniques. Optical absorption spectra of DHMAD in different solvents show the intra molecular charge transfer band in the region 400–550nm. The preferential solvation parameter shows that in dimethyl formamide (DMF)+carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) mixture, the DHMAD is preferentially solvated by DMF in the ground state and in the excited state DHMAD is preferentially solvated by CCl4 in DMF rich region and by DMF in CCl4 rich region. Abstract: Preferential solvation of 1,4-dimethoxy-3-methyl anthracene-9,10-dione (DMMAD) has been investigated using optical absorption technique. The preferential solvation parameters show that the DMMAD is preferentially solvated by acetone in acetone (AC)+propan-2-ol (PROH), AC+CH2Cl2 and AC+CCl4 mixtures. DMMAD prefers PROH in PROH+CCl4 mixture. In the case of benzene+CCl4 mixture DMMAD is preferentially solvated by benzene in benzene rich region and by CCl4 in CCl4 rich region. The results have been discussed in terms of hydrogen bonding, dipole–dipole and induced dipole–dipole interactions between DMMAD and solvent molecules. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The preferential solvation parameter shows that in dimethyl formamide (DMF)+ethanol mixture, the acridine is preferentially solvated by ethanol in DMF rich region and by DMF in ethanol rich region. Abstract: Preferential solvation of a solvatochromic probe has been studied in binary mixtures comprising of a non-protic and a protic solvent. The non-protic solvents employed are carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), acetonitrile (AcN) and N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and the protic solvents are methanol (MeOH) and ethanol (EtOH). The probe molecule exhibits different spectroscopic characteristics depending upon the properties of the solubilizing media. The observed spectral features provide an indication of the microenvironment immediately surrounding the probe. Solvatochromic shifts of the ground and excited states of the probe were analysed by monitoring the charge transfer absorption band and the fluorescence emission spectra in terms of the solute–solvent and solvent–solvent interactions. Fluorescence emission spectra show the dual emission due to excited state proton transfer nature of the probe molecule. The effect of solvent and the excitation energy on dual emission are also studied. The observed magnitude of the Stokes shift in the above solvents has been used to deduce experimentally the dipole moment ratio of the probe molecule for the excited state to the ground state. Abstract: The optical absorption and IR spectra of 1,4-dimethylamino anthraquinone (1,4-DMAAQ) in CH2Cl2/C2H5OH mixtures have been investigated. The preferential solvation of 1,4-DMAAQ in CH2Cl2/C2H5OH mixed solvents has been studied by monitoring the charge transfer band of 1,4-DMAAQ. The optical absorption spectral study indicates that 1,4-DMAAQ is preferentially solvated by CH2Cl2 in CH2Cl2/C2H5OH mixtures. This can be confirmed by the observed index of preferential solvation value (δ s1) as well as higher mole fraction of CH2Cl2 in the solvation microsphere () than in the bulk solvent (x 1). The CH2Cl2 molecules become more available to enter the solvation shell of 1,4-DMAAQ because of the hydrogen bonded clusters formed by ethanol molecules. This is also evident from the non-linear behavior of the transition energy (E 12) as well as the absence of synergistic behavior. IR spectral studies show that the observed shifts in the ν(Cx3bd;(NH) of 1,4-DMAAQ are due to the dipole–dipole interaction between the 1,4-DMAAQ and the associated ethanol. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Optical absorption, fluorescence emission and surface enhanced Raman spectra of 1,5-dipiperidino anthraquinone (1,5-DPAQ) have been examined to elucidate the nature of molecule in different environments. Fluorescence emission and optical absorption measurements show that the polarity of the solvent plays a vital role through intermolecular hydrogen bonding and reorientational motion of solvent molecule around excited state fluorophore. Anisotropy measurement gives the angle between absorption and emission transition dipoles. The vibrational features observed in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) suggest that the molecules are chemisorbed. The adsorption of the molecule is through π electrons in the anthraquinone ring and the axial lone pair of electrons of nitrogen. The orientation of the molecule is found to be ‘flat-on’. Surface enhanced Raman spectrum of 1,4-dimethylamino anthraquinone (1,4-DMAAQ) adsorbed on silver particles has been analyzed to understand the interaction between the molecule and silver surface. By studying the band intensities, the orientation of the molecule is determined. The high intensity and frequency downshifted peak due to carbonyl stretching vibration plays a major role, which shows that the molecules are chemisorbed through co-ordinating sites. The new peaks observed due to C&z.sbnd;N and N&z.sbnd;H stretching vibrations also provide the evidence for adsorption through co-ordinating sites. Optical absorption and laser induced fluorescence spectra of this molecule have also been studied in different solvents to understand the effect of environment. Polarization and anisotropy measurements provide the change in orientation induced by solvent molecules between absorption and emission transition dipoles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
