Abstract: We report transient spectral hole-burning experiments conducted in the line of 53-chromium(III) doped Al2O3 in zero field and low magnetic fields at 3 K. These facile experiments enable, in principle, the simultaneous determination of the hyperfine coupling parameters for both the ground state and the excited state, and in both directions to the crystal caxis. In order to determine these parameters we have applied a global fit by simulated spectra to the experimental data and good agreement between calculated and measured hole-burning patterns is achieved. The relevant resulting parameters for the excited state are MHz and  MHz. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Transient spectral-hole-burning studies of the R1(±3/2) line ( (2E)← 4A2(±3/2)) in 20 ppm ruby were conducted between 2.4 and 50K in a low magnetic field (B||=9.15mT) and the results were supplemented with the original data of McCumber and Sturge. A direct one-phonon process, , is the main contribution to the linewidth up to 50K whereas at higher temperatures two-phonon Raman scattering becomes dominant. The two processes are well described by and a non-perturbative expression for the electron–phonon interaction developed by Hsu and Skinner. The value of Γ 0 =141 (±4)MHz is in excellent agreement with the result of 142±6MHz previously obtained for the R2 line. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We report transient spectral hole-burning studies of the R2(±1/2) line in 130, 20ppm and 0.6ppm ruby between 2.4 and 70K. The homogeneous line width Γ h is found to be 142±6MHz at 2.4K for both 20 and 130ppm crystals; this value is in agreement with the T 1 value of 1.1ns (Γ h =1/2πT 1 =140MHz) for the state obtained by Rives and Meltzer who used pulsed, non-selective laser excitation. The line width is dominated by a direct one-phonon relaxation process up to 50K whereas at higher temperatures two-phonon Raman scattering becomes dominant. Cross-relaxation and spin-lattice relaxation times significantly affect pseudo-CW experiments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
