We describe a practical design of an ultracompact on-chip superconductive microresonator as a potential magnetic element of metamaterial. The achieved resonator size with respect to the wavelength in our experiment is about λ /14 400. The resonator consists of two superconducting Nb spirals, sandwiched face to face, with a small gap filled with dielectric. The spirals are turning in opposite directions: one clockwise, another counterclockwise. We study the resonator spectral response and its inner modes using numerical simulation in HFSS. In experiment with a laser scanning microscope, we confirm the predictions for the resonance frequencies of Nb superconductive resonator and its inner modes structures. Small size and the ease of manufacturing make the two-spiral resonator an attractive solution for superconductive filters, coupling circuits, and as a magnetic component of a metamaterial.

The contemporary superconductive electronics is widely using planar circuits with micrometer-scale elements for a variety of applications. With the rise of complexity of a circuit and increased number of its components, a simple impedance measurement are often not efficient for diagnostics of problems, nor for clarifying the physics underlying the circuit response. The established Scanning Laser Microscope (LSM) technique generates the micrometer-scale images of the amplitude of the microwave currents in a planar superconductive circuit, but not the phase of the oscillating currents. Here we present a novel, more powerful type of LSM imaging containing the signal phase information. We employ a fast optical modulator in order to synchronize the phase of the laser intensity oscillation with the phase of the probing microwave signal. The loss induced in laser illuminated area strongly depends on the phase difference between the RF probing signal and the laser beam modulation. We explain the detection principle of the phase sensitive LSM and experimentally demonstrate the capability of this method using superconductive microwave resonators. We will present experimental study of SQUID array based quantum superconductive metamaterials. The cryogenic Laser Scanning Microscope technique gives an insight to confirm a coherent response of the SQUID-based microwave resonator arrays and its tunability.

We present an ultra broadband low noise single sideband (SSB) SIS mixer developed for 200-300 GHz radio astronomy receivers. The mixer uses two Nb/AlO/sub x//Nb junctions. Image band rejection by 20 dB is provided in the entire 200-300 GHz band using a mechanical tuning of the single noncontacting backshort in the mixer. The SIS receiver SSB noise temperature is close to 50 K in the main part of the band. A speed-up of the observations at radio telescopes by a factor 2-3 is expected with the new receiver.

An ultra-low noise single sideband SIS receiver has been prepared for radio astronomy at the sub millimeter wavelength /spl lambda//spl ap/0.85 mm. The minimum single sideband receiver noise temperature of 48 K corresponds to 3 h/spl omega//k or equivalent number of 3 photon of noise. The minimum single sideband SIS mixer noise temperature is about 20 K, close to 1.2 h/spl omega//k, or one photon of noise. The Nb/AlOx/Nb junctions with a Josephson critical current density of 9 KA/cm/sup 2/ and with the area of about 0.9 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ were used. The receiver has been tested at the 30 meter IRAM radio telescope in the winter seasons of 1997 and 1998. The observations at the radio telescope are speeded up by a factor of two to three with the new receiver.

A new type of ultra broad band SIS low noise radiometer has been developed. The SIS receiver instantaneous band of about 30% is significantly increased compared to traditional designs. We avoid a restriction related to the limited band of the Intermediate Frequency (IF) low noise amplifier by using a multifrequency heterodyne power source. In this regime the frequency mixing is performed simultaneously in a big number of the subbands and the IF signals are combined in a common amplifier. A low noise operation in this regime is possible due to the quantum nature of the frequency mixing in SIS quasi particle tunnel junctions. The SIS receiver covers 25 GHz band centered at 90 GHz with an equivalent noise temperature of about 50 K. The receiver uses a fixed tuned SIS mixer with Nb/Al Ox/Nb junctions. The critical Josephson current density is about 2.6 KA/cm/sup 2/ and the junction area is of about 1.5 /spl mu/m/sup 2/. The limits to further improvement of the radiometer and the possibilities for extension of the technique to the sub millimeter band are discussed.

The integration of many receiver units into a receiver array is a common method of improvement of imaging systems. This approach, well known in the mm band for Schottky mixer arrays, has not so far been developed for Superconductor - Insulator - Superconductor (SIS) junction mixers, which give the best sensitivity in the short mm wave range and in the submm range. We demonstrate for the first time a practical low noise multibeam receiver module using SIS mixer technology. The basis for the integration of several SIS mixers with a common local oscillator source is given by the saturation of the SIS receiver noise dependence upon local oscillator power. The module comprises three identical SIS mixers integrated with a common local oscillator, coupled through a three branch waveguide directional coupler. The multibeam module has been developed for a focal plane array receiver of the 30 meter radio telescope of the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimetrique (IRAM).

An ultra low noise fixed-tuned SIS mixer covering an instantaneous band of 45% around 150 GHz has been developed for radioastronomy. A new type of coplanar tuning circuit for the SIS junction is introduced. The Nb/Al oxide/Nb junctions are 2 /spl mu/m/sup 2/ with critical Josephson current density of 4.2 KA/cm/sup 2/. The minimum DSB mixer noise is 11 K. The minimum DSB receiver noise is 19 K, while the average noise is 25 K in the 130-175 GHz range with a 1 GHz IF band. A speedup of the observations by a factor 2-3 is possible with the new receiver at 30 m IRAM radiotelescope.

We present a SIS mixer developed for 200 – 250 GHz band receivers of Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We demonstrate the minimum DSB receiver noise of 20 K at 220 GHz. The average receiver noise of 25 K is possible in 200 – 250 GHz range. The receiver conversion gain and output noise instability of 10−4 on the time scale of 1 minute is comparable with the Shottky receivers performance. The minimum measured SIS mixer noise of about 10 K is close to the quantum limit. The waveguide SIS mixer with a single backshort has two junction array with inductively tuned junctions. The Nb/Al Oxide/Nb SIS junctions are 2.24 µm2 each with the Josephson critical current density of 3.2 KA/cm2. The thermal properties of the SIS mixer are studied. The mixer band of the low noise operation is in a good agreement with the design requirements.

We discuss the characteristics of an ultra-compact double-spiral superconductive Nb microresonator as a potential magnetic metamaterial element. This resonator consists of two superconducting Nb spirals, sandwiched face to face, with a small gap. We study the resonator spectral response by using numerical simulation. The resonator modal structure has been also examined with a laser scanning microscope. The achieved resonator size with respect to the wavelength in our experiment is about λ/4200. Compared to the single-spiral resonator, the frequency of the fundamental mode of the double-spiral one is lowered by a factor of six. Small size and the ease of manufacturing make the double-spiral resonator an attractive solution for magnetic the component of a metamaterial.

The five antennas of the Plateau de Bure Interferometer have been instrumented with dual-channel receivers in the λ 3 mm and λ 1 mm bands. Polarisation diplexing allows simultaneous observations in the two bands. Each receiver has ambient and cryogenic calibration loads, and one receiver is equipped with a beam switching chopper for total power flux measurements. Typically the receiver noise temperatures are

International audience; Aims: This paper describes the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) that was launched onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory in May 2009. Methods: The instrument is a set of 7 heterodyne receivers that are electronically tuneable, covering 480-1250 GHz with SIS mixers and the 1410-1910 GHz range with hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers. The local oscillator (LO) subsystem comprises a Ka-band synthesizer followed by 14 chains of frequency multipliers and 2 chains for each frequency band. A pair of auto-correlators and a pair of acousto-optical spectrometers process the two IF signals from the dual-polarization, single-pixel front-ends to provide instantaneous frequency coverage of 2 × 4 GHz, with a set of resolutions (125 kHz to 1 MHz) that are better than 0.1 km s-1. Results: After a successful qualification and a pre-launch TB/TV test program, the flight instrument is now in-orbit and completed successfully the commissioning and performance verification phase. The in-orbit performance of the receivers matches the pre-launch sensitivities. We also report on the in-orbit performance of the receivers and some first results of HIFI's operations. Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA.

We summarize the development and the delivery of two SIS mixers for the 1.1-1.25 THz band of the heterodyne spectrometer of Herschel Observatory (HSO). The quasi-op tical SIS mixer has two Nb/Al N/NbTiN junctions with the area of 0.25 um 2 . The Josephson critical current density in the junction is 30-50 kA/cm . The tuning circuit integrated with SIS junc tion has the base electrode of Nb and a gold wire layer. With the new SIS mixers the test receiver maximum Y factor is 1.41. The minimum receiver uncorrected DSB noise temperature is 450 K. The SIS receiver noise corrected for the loss in the optics is 350-450 K across the 1100-1250 GHz band. The receiver has a uniform sensitivity in the full IF range of 4-8 GHz. The sub-micron sized SIS junction shape is optimized to ease the suppression of the Josephson current, and the receiver operation is stable. The measured mixer beam pattern is symmetrical and, in a good agreement with the requirements, has the f/d =4.25 at the central frequency of the operation band. The minimum DSB SIS receiver noise is close to 6 hv/k, the lowest value achieved thus far in the THz frequencies range. We present a low noise SIS mixer developed for the 1.2 THz band of the heterodyne spectrometer of the Herschel Space Observatory. With the launch of the Herschel SO in 2007, this device will be among the first SIS mixers flown in space. This SIS mixer has a quasi-optical design, with a double slot planar antenna and an extended spherical lens made of pure Si. The SIS junctions are Nb/AlN/NbTiN with a critical current density of about 30 KA/cm2 and with the junction area of a quarter of a micron square. Our mixer circuit uses two SIS junctions biased in parallel. To improve the simultaneous suppression of the Josephson current in each of them, we use diamond-shaped junctions. A low loss Nb/Au micro-strip transmission line is used for the first time in the mixer circuit well above the gap frequency of Nb. The minimum uncorrected Double Sideband receiver noise is 550 K (Y=1.34). The minimum receiver noise corrected for the local oscillator beam splitter and for the cryostat window is 340 K, about 6 hv/k, the lowest value achieved thus far in the THz frequencies range.

The local oscillator unit will be passively cooled while the focal plane unit is cooled by superfluid helium and cold helium vapors. HIFI employs W-band GaAs amplifiers, InP HEMT low noise IF amplifiers, fixed tuned broadband planar diode multipliers, high power W-bapd Isolators, and novel material systems in the SIS mixers. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration through the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is managing the development of the highest frequency (1119-1250 GHz) SIS mixers, the local oscillators oscillators for the three highest frequency receivers as well as W-band power amplifiers, high power W-band isolators, varactor diode devices for all high frequency multipliers and InP HEMT components for all the receiver channels intermediate frequency amplifiers. The NASA developed components represent a significant advancement in the available performance. This paper presents an update of the performance and the current state of development.

We present a study of requirements on the sensitivity of mm and sub millimeter wave receivers for application in radio astronomy. The study is based on the experience of the operation of the SIS receivers at the radio telescopes of IRAM and considers also the conditions of operation at the future radioastronomical instruments such as LSA, MMA and LSMA. Using a radio telescope and atmospheric model we consider the effect of the receiver sensitivity on the radio telescope operation in terms of observing time. The observing time at a radio telescope depends on the system noise temperature as strongly as on collecting area, which defines nearly all the cost of modern mm and sub mm instruments. As a compromise between the receiver development effort and the system performance we introduce a criterion of an 'optimum' receiver noise. A strict requirement on the receiver operation is obtained. For an efficient use of the existing and the future radio telescopes, a 10 - 20 K SSB receiver noise in the mm band and 20 - 40 K SSB at sub millimeter wavelength are necessary. Finally the status and the perspectives for SIS receiver development for mm and sum mm radio astronomy are presented.

A low noise SIS mixer receiver is prepared in IRAM for the operation at 0.8 mm wavelength on the 30 M telescope at Pico Veleta in Spain. For this receiver a new fixed-tuned waveguide SIS mixer is developed. This mixer is able to operate in a wide band being fixed tuned. The present mixer design uses relative large Nb\AIoxide\Nb SIS junctions (1-2 ?2) in which parallel inductive tuning is implemented with quasi-lumped elements. Experimental measurements agree with model predictions of the new SIS mixers performance. At the IRAM 30-m radiotelescope the best receiver DSB noise temperature achieved in the 0.8 mm band is about 70 K It is believed that it is the first wide band receiver with a fixed tuned submillimeter SIS mixer on the radiotelescope with the lowest noise temperature published for the moment.

CASIMIR, the Caltech Airborne Submillimeter Interstellar Medium Investigations Receiver, is a far-infrared and submillimeter heterodyne spectrometer, being developed for the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA. CASIMIR will use newly developed superconducting-insulating-superconducting (SIS) mixers. Combined with the 2.5 m mirror of SOFIA, these detectors will allow observations with high sensitivity to be made in the frequency range from 500 GHz up to 1.4 THz. Initially, at least 5 frequency bands in this range are planned, each with a 4-8 GHz IF passband. Up to 4 frequency bands will be available on each flight and bands may be swapped readily between flights. The local oscillators for all bands are synthesized and tuner-less, using solid state multipliers. CASIMIR also uses a novel, commercial, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based, fast Fourier transform spectrometer, with extremely high resolution, 22000 (268 kHz at 6 GHz), yielding a system resolution > 10 6 . CASIMIR is extremely well suited to observe the warm, ≈ 100K, interstellar medium, particularly hydrides and water lines, in both galactic and extragalactic sources. We present an overview of the instrument, its capabilities and systems. We also describe recent progress in development of the local oscillators and present our first astronomical observations obtained with the new type of spectrometer.
