Doppler spectrum width, which relates to wind turbulence, is one of the essential parameters of coherent LIDAR. Using the Fourier transform theorem and the definition of correlation function, the power spectrum function in the stationary condition is deduced. The effects of pulse shape, pulse duration and the windowing are included. The spectrum width resulted from the turbulence is given under Kolmogorov turbulence model. Based on the power spectrum theory, the spectrum broadening by different pulse shapes and pulse durations are calculated. To validate the accuracy of the theory and usage in the retrieval of turbulence parameters, the numerical simulations of the echo signal are carried out in turbulence conditions. The statistics characteristics of the spectrum broadening from laser pulse shapes and durations are inverted and compared. The results show that the spectrum broadening varies greatly due to the selection of pulse shapes and pulse durations, and the numerical simulation is in accordance with the theory results.

Lidar (Light detection and ranging) has special capabilities for remote sensing of many different behaviours of the atmosphere. One of the techniques which show a great deal of promise for several applications is Raman scattering. The detecting capability, including maximum operation range and minimum detectable gas concentration is one of the most significant parameters for lidar remote sensing of pollutants. In this paper, based on the new method for evaluating the capabilities of a Raman lidar system, we present an evaluation of detecting capability of Raman lidar for monitoring atmospheric CO2 in Hefei. Numerical simulations about the influence of atmospheric conditions on lidar detecting capability were carried out, and a conclusion can be drawn that the maximum difference of the operation ranges caused by the weather conditions alone can reach about 0.4 to 0.5km with a measuring precision within 30ppmv. The range of minimum detectable concentration caused by the weather conditions alone can reach about 20 to 35 ppmv in vertical direction for 20000 shots at a distance of 1 km on the assumption that other parameters are kept constant. The other corresponding parameters under different conditions are also given. The capability of Raman lidar operated in vertical direction was found to be superior to that operated in horizontal direction. During practical measurement with the Raman lidar whose hardware components were fixed, aerosol scattering extinction effect would be a significant factor that influenced the capability of Raman lidar. This work may be a valuable reference for lidar system designing, measurement accuracy improving and data processing.

A new method is proposed to derive the size distribution of aerosol from the simulated multiwavelength lidar extinction coefficients. The basis for this iteration is to consider the extinction efficiency factor of particles as a set of weighting function covering the entire radius region of a distribution. The weighting functions are calculated exactly from Mie theory. This method extends the inversion region by subtracting some extinction coefficient. The radius range of simulated size distribution is 0.1–10.0μm, the inversion radius range is 0.1–2.0μm, but the inverted size distributions are in good agreement with the simulated one.

A pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 355nm is used to pump Raman cell filled with D2, D2/Ar and D2/He. With adequately adjusted parameters, the maximum photon conversion efficiency of the first-order Stokes light (S1, 396.796nm) reaches 33.33% in D2/Ar and the stability of S1 in pure D2 is fairly high, the energy drift being less than 10% when the pump energy drifts in the range of 5%. The conversion efficiency and stability, which are functions of the composition and pressure of the Raman medium and the energy of pump laser, are investigated. The result has been used to optimize the laser transmitter system for a differential absorption lidar system to measure NO2 concentration profiles.

In this Letter, a method, based on stokes parameters, is developed to observe the angular displacement between the excitation and emission moments. Experiments demonstrate that when combined with degree of polarization spectrums, we can acquire the depolarization caused by angular displacement or energy migration. The method presented in this Letter can be easily realized with the existing fluorescence measuring system and may potentially make it convenient to study the fluorophore electronic structure or the mechanism of fluorescence anisotropy.

Based on laser atmosphere backscattering spectrum, the design and experiment of a Raman lidar system for measurement of atmospheric CO2 are presented. 354.7nm third harmonic of Nd∶YAG laser is transmitted with 350mJ pulse energy and repetition rate of 20Hz. The receiver employs a photomultiplier tube with quantum efficiency of 25% and 200MHz photon counter, and it detects Raman backscattering 371.66nm(shift 1285cm-1) signal. At 1h integration, the signal to noise ratio below 2.5km is greater than 8. Combinatorial filter is used to reject interference presented by 354.7nm intense Mie-Rayleigh backscattering and 375.4nm Raman backscattering from O2. We compare the Raman return signal at 371.66nm from atmospheric CO2 with the reference Raman return signal at 386.7nm from atmospheric N2 to retrieve the atmospheric CO2 concentration.

Achromatic retarder is a device to be used in wide spectral range for optical phase retardation. The phase retardation is constant when the wavelength is changed. Modern polarization technology and optical modulation demand high precision for the measurement of achromatic retarder. Based on the principle of polarizing modulation, this paper sets up an experiment system for measuring the phase retardation for high precision achromatic retarder of rhombic shape. The results indicate that the principle of high precision achromatic retarder is correct and the measurement error is less than 1%, it reaches a high precision and satisfies the requirement of application.

This paper analyzes theoretically various nonlinear phenomena caused by focusing a laser beam into high-pressure gas, and the interaction and interference produced, measures the relationship among output energy, input energy, gas pressure and focal length when the fourth harmonic Nd:YAG laser is focused into the Raman cell filled with methane. Experimental results are in agreement with theoretical ones qualitatively. Based on these we can optimize and use the stimulated Raman scattering.
