High-precision Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) orbits are critical for real-time clock estimation and precise positioning service; however, the prediction error grows gradually with the increasing prediction session. In this study, we present a new efficient precise orbit determination (POD) strategy referred to as the epoch-parallel processing to reduce the orbit update latency, in which a 24-h processing job is split into several sub-sessions that are processed in parallel and then stacked to solve and recover parameters subsequently. With a delicate handling of parameters crossing different sub-sessions, such as ambiguities, the method is rigorously equivalent to the one-session batch solution, but is much more efficient, halving the time-consuming roughly. Together with paralleling other procedures such as orbit integration and using open multi-processing (openMP), the multi-GNSS POD of 120 satellites using 90 stations can be fulfilled within 30 min. The lower update latency enables users to access orbits closer to the estimation part, that is, 30–60-min prediction with a 30-min update latency, which significantly improves the orbit quality. Compared to the hourly updated orbit, the averaged 1D RMS values of predicted orbit in terms of overlap for GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BDS MEO are improved by 39%, 35%, 41%, and 37%, respectively, and that of BDS GEO and IGSO satellites is improved by 47%. We also demonstrate that the boundary discontinuities of half-hourly orbit are within 2 cm for the GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellites, and for BDS the values are 2.6, 15.5, and 9.8 cm for MEO, GEO, and IGSO satellites, respectively. The Real-Time Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Precise Positioning Service (RTPPS) is recognized as the most promising system by providing precise satellite orbit and clock corrections for users to achieve centimeter-level positioning with a stand-alone receiver in real-time. Although the products are available with high accuracy almost all the time, they may occasionally suffer from unexpected significant biases, which consequently degrades the positioning performance. Therefore, quality monitoring at the system-level has become more and more crucial for providing a reliable GNSS service. In this paper, we propose a method for the monitoring of real-time satellite orbit and clock products using a monitoring station network based on the Quality Control (QC) theory. The satellites with possible biases are first detected based on the outliers identified by Precise Point Positioning (PPP) in the monitoring station network. Then, the corresponding orbit and clock parameters with temporal constraints are introduced and estimated through the sequential Least Square (LS) estimator and the corresponding Instantaneous User Range Errors (IUREs) can be determined. A quality indicator is calculated based on the IUREs in the monitoring network and compared with a pre-defined threshold. The quality monitoring method is experimentally evaluated by monitoring the real-time orbit and clock products generated by GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ), Potsdam. The results confirm that the problematic satellites can be detected accurately and effectively with missed detection rate 4 × 10 − 6 and false alarm rate 1.2 × 10 − 5 . Considering the quality alarms, the PPP results in terms of RMS of positioning differences with respect to the International GNSS Service (IGS) weekly solution in the north, east and up directions can be improved by 12%, 10% and 27%, respectively. In the absence of detailed surface information, empirical solar radiation pressure (SRP) models, such as the five-parameter Empirical CODE Orbit Model (ECOM1) and its extended version-ECOM2, are widely used for modeling SRP forces acting on GNSS satellites. This study shows that the orbits of BeiDou-3 Inclined Geosynchronous Orbit satellites (IGSOs) determined with the ECOM1 model suffer from systematic once-per-revolution radial orbit errors, which can be partly reduced by the ECOM2 model. To eliminate such orbit errors, the BeiDou-3 IGSO optical coefficients are solved by using an adjustable box-wing (ABW) model and then introduced into an a priori box-wing SRP model to enhance the ECOM1 model (ECOM1 + BW). In the ABW solution, in addition to satellite body and solar panels, the contributions of the communication payloads installed on BeiDou-3 IGSO ± X panels on the SRP are also considered, which markedly improves the stability of the optical coefficient estimates. The efficiency of the developed a priori box-wing model is demonstrated through eliminated once-per-revolution radial orbit errors and decreased day boundary discontinuities. However, the orbit solutions still show significant degradations during eclipse seasons. The results of the first yaw-attitude analysis for eclipsing BeiDou-3 IGSOs show that their yaw behaviors are the same as those of BeiDou-3 CAST (China Academy of Space Technology) MEOs (Medium Earth Orbit satellites), and have been well considered in the study. This rules out the possibility that attitude errors are the potential reason for the orbit deterioration. By introducing a once-per-revolution sine term in the Sun direction ( D s term) and keeping D s active during the Earth's shadow transitions to the ECOM1 + BW model, the orbit performance inside the eclipse seasons is significantly improved and can be comparable to that outside the eclipse seasons. With the completion of Chinese BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), the world has begun to enjoy the Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services of four Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). In order to improve the GNSS performance and expand its applications, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Enhanced Global Navigation Satellite System (LeGNSS) is being vigorously advocated. Combined with high-, medium-, and low- earth orbit satellites, it can improve GNSS performance in terms of orbit determination, Precise Point Positioning (PPP) convergence time, etc. This paper comprehensively reviews the current status of LeGNSS, focusing on analyzing its advantages and challenges for precise orbit and clock determination, PPP convergence, earth rotation parameter estimation, and global ionosphere modeling. Thanks to the fast geometric change brought by LEO satellites, LeGNSS is expected to fundamentally solve the problem of the long convergence time of PPP without any augmentation. The convergence time can be shortened within 1 minute if appropriate LEO constellations are deployed. The correction of higher-order ionospheric (HOI) delays remaining in the dual-frequency ionosphere-free combined observations is suggested after the confirmation of its impact on precise Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data processing. However, in the precise orbit determination (POD) for generating ultra-rapid orbits, the higher-order corrections are not always considered most likely because a RT ionospheric model needed for calculating the higher-order corrections is hardly available or the HOI impact is believed rather small compared to the accuracy of the predicted orbit. With the increasing requirement on the positioning performances from various applications, providing more accurate and reliable ultra-rapid orbits becomes an essential task of the real-time GNSS precise positioning services. In this contribution, the temporal–spatial characteristics of HOI effects on GNSS observables are investigated thoroughly using data collected from International GNSS Service (IGS) global ground stations and fluctuations of the higher-order delays up to several centimeters are detected during periods of high ionospheric activity. Hereafter, we evaluate the HOI effects on the multi-GNSS POD based on a network with globally distributed IGS stations. Results show that owing to the applied HOI corrections, the agreement of overlapping orbits can be improved significantly for all satellites and especially in radial direction. The three-dimensional RMS values of the overlapping differences are reduced from 1.6, 2.0, 4.6 and 1.7 to 1.0, 1.1, 3.4, and 1.5 cm for GPS, GALILEO, BDS, and GLONASS, respectively. Furthermore, the orbit improvement is also confirmed by the satellite laser ranging (SLR) observations over a 2-month time period where the STD of SLR residuals is reduced by HOI corrections from 6.4 to 5.3 cm for the BDS-IGSO satellites. During the past years, real-time precise point positioning has been proven to be an efficient tool in the applications of navigation, precise orbit determination of LEO as well as earthquake and tsunami early warning, etc. One of the most crucial issues of these applications is the high-precision real-time GNSS satellite clock. Though the performance and character of the GNSS onboard atomic frequency standard have been widely studied, the white noise model is still the most popular hypothesis that employed in the real-time GNSS satellite clock estimation. However, concerning the real-time applications, significant data discontinuity may arise either due to the fact that only regional stations involved, or the failure in the stations, satellites and network connections. These data discontinuity would result in an arbitrary clock jump between adjacent arcs when the clock offsets are modeled as white noise. In addition, it is also expected that the detection and identification of outliers would be benefited from the constrains of the satellite oscillator noise model. Thus in this contribution, based on the statistic analysis of almost 2-year multi-GNSS precise clock products, we developed the oscillator noise model for the satellites of GPS, GLONASS, BDS and Galileo according to the oscillator type as well as the block type. Then, the efficiency of this oscillator noise model in multi-GNSS satellite clock estimation is demonstrated with 2-months data for both regional and global networks in simultaneous real-time mode. For the regional network, the results suggest that compared with the traditional solution based on white noise model, the improvement is 44.4 and 12.1% on average for STD and RMS, respectively, and the improvement is mainly attributed to the efficiency of the oscillator noise model during the convergence period and the gross error resistance. Concerning the global experiment, since the stations guarantee the continuous tracking of the satellites with redundant observable, the improvement is not as evident as that of regional experiment for GPS, GLONASS and BDS. The STD of Galileo clock improves from 0.28 to 0.19 ns due to that, the satellites E14 and E18 still suffer significant data discontinuity during our experimental period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, with the rapid development of multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), the real-time positioning and navigation are undergoing dramatic changes with potential for a better performance. To provide more precise and reliable ultra-rapid orbits is critical for multi-GNSS real-time positioning, especially for the three merging constellations Beidou, Galileo and QZSS which are still under construction. In this contribution, we present a five-system precise orbit determination (POD) strategy to fully exploit the GPS + GLONASS + BDS + Galileo + QZSS observations from CDDIS + IGN + BKG archives for the realization of hourly five-constellation ultra-rapid orbit update. After adopting the optimized 2-day POD solution (updated every hour), the predicted orbit accuracy can be obviously improved for all the five satellite systems in comparison to the conventional 1-day POD solution (updated every 3 h). The orbit accuracy for the BDS IGSO satellites can be improved by about 80, 45 and 50% in the radial, cross and along directions, respectively, while the corresponding accuracy improvement for the BDS MEO satellites reaches about 50, 20 and 50% in the three directions, respectively. Furthermore, the multi-GNSS real-time precise point positioning (PPP) ambiguity resolution has been performed by using the improved precise satellite orbits. Numerous results indicate that combined GPS + BDS + GLONASS + Galileo (GCRE) kinematic PPP ambiguity resolution (AR) solutions can achieve the shortest time to first fix (TTFF) and highest positioning accuracy in all coordinate components. With the addition of the BDS, GLONASS and Galileo observations to the GPS-only processing, the GCRE PPP AR solution achieves the shortest average TTFF of 11 min with 7∘ cutoff elevation, while the TTFF of GPS-only, GR, GE and GC PPP AR solution is 28, 15, 20 and 17 min, respectively. As the cutoff elevation increases, the reliability and accuracy of GPS-only PPP AR solutions decrease dramatically, but there is no evident decrease for the accuracy of GCRE fixed solutions which can still achieve an accuracy of a few centimeters in the east and north components. The orbit accuracy of the navigation satellites relies on the accurate knowledge of the forces on the spacecraft, in particular the non-conservative perturbations. This study focuses on the Inclined Geosynchronous Orbit (IGSO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites of the regional Chinese BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS-2), for which apparent deficiencies of non-conservative models are identified and evidenced in the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) residuals. The orbit errors derived from the empirical 5-parameter Extended CODE Orbit Model (ECOM) as well as a semi-analytical adjustable box-wing model show prominent dependency on the Sun elongation angle, even in the yaw-steering attitude mode. Hence, a periodic acceleration in the normal direction of the +X surface, presumably generated by the mismodeled thermal radiation pressure, is introduced. The SLR validations reveal that the Sun elongation angle-dependent systematic errors were significantly reduced, and the orbit accuracy was improved by 10–30% to approximately 4.5 cm and 3.0 cm for the BDS-2 IGSO and MEO satellites, respectively. For Global Positioning System (GPS) precise orbit determination (POD), the solar radiation pressure (SRP) is the dominant nongravitational perturbation force. Among the current SRP models, the ECOM and box-wing models are widely used in the International GNSS Service (IGS) community. However, the performance of different models varies over different GPS satellites. In this study, we investigate the performances of different SRP models, including the box-wing and adjustable box-wing as a priori models, and ECOM1 and ECOM2 as parameterization models, in the GPS POD solution from 2017 to 2019. Moreover, we pay special attention to the handling of the shadow factor in the SRP modeling for eclipsing satellites, which is critical to achieve high-precision POD solutions but has not yet been fully investigated. We demonstrate that, as an a priori SRP model, the adjustable box-wing has better performance than the box-wing model by up to 5 mm in the orbit day boundary discontinuity (DBD) statistics, with the largest improvement observed on the BLOCK IIR satellites using the ECOM1 as a parameterization SRP model. The box-wing model shows an insignificant orbit improvement serving as the a priori SRP model. For the eclipsing satellites, the three-dimensional (3D) root mean square (RMS) values of orbit DBD are improved when the shadow factor is applied only in the D direction (pointing toward to Sun) than that in the three directions (D, Y, and B) in the satellite frame. Different SRP models have comparable performance in terms of the Earth rotation parameter (ERP) agreement with the IERS EOP 14C04 product, whereas the magnitude of the length of day (LoD) annual signal is reduced when the shadow factor is applied in the D direction than in the three directions. This study clarifies how the shadow factor should be applied in the GPS POD solution and demonstrates that the a priori adjustable box-wing model combined with ECOM1 is more suitable for high-precision GPS POD solutions, which is useful for the further GNSS data analysis. The Korean government has a plan to build a new regional satellite navigation system called the Korean Positioning System (KPS). The initial KPS constellation is designed to consist of seven satellites, which include three geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellites and four inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) satellites. KPS will provide an independent positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) service in the Asia-Oceania region and can also be compatible with GPS. In the simulation for KPS, we employ 24 GPS as designed initially and 7 KPS satellites. Compared to the true orbit that we simulated, the averaged root mean square (RMS) values of orbit-only signal-in-space ranging errors (SISRE) are approximately 4.3 and 3.9 cm for KPS GEO and IGSO. Two different positioning solutions are analyzed to demonstrate the KPS performance. KPS standard point positioning (SPP) errors in the service area are about 4.7, 3.9, and 7.1 m for east (E), north (N), and up (U) components, respectively. The combined KPS+GPS SPP accuracy can be improved by 25.0%, 31.8%, and 35.0% compared to GPS in E, N, and U components. The averaged position errors for KPS kinematic precise point positioning (KPPP) are less than 10 cm. In the fringe of the KPS service area, however, the position RMS errors can reach about 40 cm. Unlike KPS, GPS solutions show high positioning accuracy in the KPS service area. The combined KPS+GPS can be improved by 28.7%, 27.1%, and 30.5% compared to GPS in E, N, and U components, respectively. The low-cost single-frequency GNSS receiver is one of the most economical and affordable tools for the onboard real-time navigation of numerous remote sensing small/micro satellites. We concentrate on the algorithm and experiments of onboard real-time orbit determination (RTOD) based on a single-frequency GPS/BDS receiver. Through various experiments of processing the real single-frequency GPS/BDS measurements from the Yaogan-30 (YG30) series and FengYun-3C (FY3C) satellites of China, some critical aspects of the onboard RTOD are investigated, such as the optimal force models setting, the effect of different measurements, and the impact of GPS/BDS fusion. The results demonstrate that a gravity model truncated to 55 × 55 order/degree for YG30 and 45 × 45 for FY3C and compensated with an optimal stochastic modeling of empirical accelerations, which minimize the onboard computational load and only result in a slight loss of orbit accuracy, is sufficient to obtain high-precision real-time orbit results. Under the optimal force models, the real-time orbit accuracy of 0.4–0.7 m for position and 0.4–0.7 mm/s for velocity is achievable with the carrier-phase-based solution, while an inferior real-time orbit accuracy of 0.8–1.6 m for position and 0.9–1.7 mm/s for velocity is achieved with the pseudo-range-based solution. Furthermore, although the GPS/BDS fusion only makes little change to the orbit accuracy, it increases the number of visible GNSS satellites significantly, and thus enhances the geometric distribution of GNSS satellites that help suppress the local orbit errors and improves the reliability and availability of the onboard RTOD, especially in some anomalous arcs where only a few GPS satellites are trackable. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) enhanced Global Navigation Satellite System (LeGNSS) has been recognized as the promising positioning system in the near future where mega-constellations of LEO satellites are used for precise positioning. Fast Precise Point Positioning (PPP) convergence can be achieved if LEO constellations are employed into current GNSS due to the fast motion of LEO satellites. In order to fulfill this purpose, it is of great importance to design a LEO constellation or to conduct LEO constellation optimization for global precise positioning. In this article, several aspects of LEO constellations in terms of number of LEO orbital planes, number of LEO satellites, and the selection of orbital inclinations are statistically analyzed to find out the suitable LEO constellation for LeGNSS. It is shown that the combination of several LEO constellations with different inclinations together as a whole would be much more appropriate to get a more uniform distribution of the number of visible LEO satellites along the latitude for global fast convergent PPP. With a total 240 LEO satellites of orbital inclinations at 90°, 60°, and 35° selected in this article, one minute convergence time for PPP is achieved on a global scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• A unified and rigorous ISB mathematical model is derived through equations. • The components of the new ISB model are verified by experiments. • The new ISB model is used to explain whether it is necessary to add an ISB parameter in BDS-2 and BDS-3 combined PPP. • The time-varying characteristics of ISB in multi-GNSS PPP are evaluated. • The influence of ISB estimation method on multi-GNSS PPP is discussed. The inter-system bias (ISB) is an important parameter in multi-GNSS precise point positioning (PPP). However, on the one hand, the generation mechanism and error components of ISB are not clear. On the other hand, it is unclear whether the ISB parameter should be added to the BDS-2/BDS-3 combined PPP. First, in order to solve these problems, an extended ISB mathematical model is proposed, which unifies the common errors between receiver and satellite, and extends the original ISB model. Second, to demonstrate the correctness of the new model, the components of the new ISB model are verified, and then it is used to explain whether the ISB parameter should be added to BDS-2/BDS-3 combined PPP. Furthermore, 41 stations from the MGEX network and precise products from COD (Center for Orbit Determination in Europe), GBM (Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum) and WUM (Wuhan University) are used to calculate and analyze the multi-GNSS PPP and ISB during day of year (DOY) 307–365, 2020. Finally, we propose to use a different estimation method of ISB with different precise products to improve the positioning accuracy and shorten the convergence time. The experimental results show that: (1) ISB parameter is composed of five parts: time system error, receiver hardware delay, signal distortion biases (SDB), MGEX-realized (multi-GNSS experiment) time scale and other unmodeled deviations. (2) Due to different receiver hardware delay, SDB and MGEX-realized time scale between BDS-2 and BDS-3, it is necessary to add an ISB parameter in BDS-2/BDS-3 PPP. (3) In multi-GNSS PPP, if the ISB changes greatly but the traditional constant method is used to estimate the ISB parameter, the impact on single station PPP coordinates can reach decimeters. The statistical results demonstrate that the RMS of GBM(CON(Constant)) in East (E), North (N) and Up (U) directions are 2.34 cm, 0.60 cm, and 1.59 cm, respectively, while the RMS of GBM(RWK(Random walk)) decreased by 59.8 %, 13.3 %, and 18.2 %, respectively.
