Two novel extraction chromatography resins (ECRs) containing two diglycolamide (DGA) -functionalized calix[4]arenes with n-propyl and isopentyl substituents at the amide nitrogen atom, termed as ECR-1 and ECR-2, respectively, were evaluated for the uptake of Th(IV) from nitric acid feed solutions. While both the resins were having a quite high Th(IV) uptake ability (Kd >3000 at 3 M HNO3), the uptake was relatively lower with the resin containing the isopentyl DGA, which appeared magnified at lower nitric acid concentrations. Kinetic modeling of the sorption data suggested fitting to the pseudo-second order model pointing to a chemical reaction during the uptake of the metal ion. Sorption isotherm studies were carried out showing a good fitting to the Langmuir and D-R isotherm models, suggesting the uptake conforming to monolayer sorption and a chemisorption model. Glass columns with a bed volume of ca. 2.5 mL containing ca. 0.5 g lots of the ECRs were used for studies to assess the possibility of actual applications of the ECRs. Breakthrough profiles obtained with feed containing 0.7 g/L Th(NO3)3 solution resulted in breakthrough volumes of 8 and 5 mL, respectively, for the ECR-1 and ECR-2 resins. Near quantitative elution of the loaded metal ion was possible using a solution of oxalic acid and nitric acid. A method for the separation of Th-234 from natural uranium was demonstrated for the possible application of ECR-1.

The objective of the present study was to achieve the successful encapsulation of a therapeutic agent to achieve antifouling functionality regarding biomedical applications. Considering nanotechnology, drug-loaded polycaprolactone (PCL)-based nanoparticles were prepared using a nano-precipitation technique by optimizing various process parameters. The resultant nano-formulations were investigated for in vitro drug release and antifouling applications. The prepared particles were characterized in terms of surface morphology and surface properties. Optimized blank and drug-loaded nanoparticles had an average size of 200 nm and 216 nm, respectively, with associated charges of −16.8 mV and −11.2 mV. Studies of the in vitro release of drug were carried out, which showed sustained release at two different pH, 5.5 and 7.4 Antifouling activity was observed against two bacterial strains, Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli. The zone of inhibition of the optimized polymeric drug-loaded nanoparticle F-25 against both strains were compared with the pure drug. The gradual pH-responsive release of antibiotics from the biodegradable polymeric nanoparticles could significantly increase the efficiency and pharmacokinetics of the drug as compared to the pure drug. The acquired data significantly noted that the resultant nano-encapsulation of antifouling functionality could be a promising candidate for topical drug delivery systems and skin applications.

Two solid phase extraction resins (SPER) were prepared by impregnating solutions of two diglycolamide-functionalized calix[4]arenes in 10% isodecanol in n-dodecane into Chromosorb W, as the stationary phase. While SPER-I contained n-propyl functionalized calix[4]arene, SPER-II contained the calix[4]arene with isopentyl groups at the carboxamide nitrogen atoms. The SPERs were characterized by SEM, TGA, FTIR, etc. and were used for the batch uptake of neptunium(IV) from nitric acid feed solutions. While the uptake of Np(IV) was extremely high with SPER-I (Kd: 47,544 at 3 M nitric acid, ca. 8% extractant loading), SPER-II displayed a significantly lower extraction efficiency (Kd: 13,724 under identical conditions) as indicated by the batch uptake studies. Sorption isotherm studies were carried out which indicated good fitting to the Langmuir model suggesting uptake conforming to monolayer sorption. Fitting to the D-R isotherm model conformed to a chemisorption model. Column studies were also carried out and the elution profiles, obtained with solutions of oxalic acid and nitric acid indicated very sharp peaks suggesting that the column can be used for the separation of Np(IV) from acidic radioactive feeds.

A poly(l-lactic acid)/nanohydroxyapatite (PLLA/nHA) scaffold works as a bioactive, osteoconductive scaffold for bone-tissue engineering, but its low degradation rate limits embedded HA in PLLA to efficiently interact with body fluids. In this work, nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) was added in lower filler loadings (1, 5, 10, and 20 wt%) in a poly(l-lactic acid)/cyclo olefin copolymer10 wt% (PLLA/COC10) blend to obtain novel poly(l-lactic acid)/cyclo olefin copolymer/nanohydroxyapatite (PLLA/COC10-nHA) scaffolds for bone-tissue regeneration and repair. Furthermore, the structure-activity relationship of PLLA/COC10-nHA (ternary system) nanocomposites in comparison with PLLA/nHA (binary system) nanocomposites was systematically studied. Nanocomposites were evaluated for structural (morphology, crystallization), thermomechanical properties, antibacterial potential, and cytocompatibility for bone-tissue engineering applications. Scanning electron microscope images revealed that PLLA/COC10-nHA had uniform morphology and dispersion of nanoparticles up to 10% of HA, and the overall nHA dispersion in matrix was better in PLLA/COC10-nHA as compared to PLLA/nHA. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies confirmed miscibility and transformation of the α-crystal form of PLLA to the ά-crystal form by the addition of nHA in all nanocomposites. The degree of crystallinity (%) in the case of PLLA/COC10-nHA 10 wt% was 114% higher than pure PLLA/COC10 and 128% higher than pristine PLLA, indicating COC and nHA are acting as nucleating agents in the PLLA/COC10-nHA nanocomposites, causing an increase in the degree of crystallinity (%). Moreover, PLLA/COC10-nHA exhibited 140 to 240% (1–20 wt% HA) enhanced mechanical properties in terms of ductility as compared to PLLA/nHA. Antibacterial activity results showed that 10 wt% HA in PLLA/COC10-nHA showed substantial activity against P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and L. monocytogenes. In vitro cytocompatibility of PLLA/COC10 and PLLA nanocomposites with nHA osteoprogenitor cells (MC3T3-E1) and bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) was evaluated. Both cell lines showed two- to three-fold enhancement in cell viability and 10- to 30-fold in proliferation upon culture on PLLA/COC10-nHA as compared to PLLA/nHA composites. It was observed that the ternary system PLLA/COC10-nHA had good dispersion and interfacial interaction resulting in improved thermomechanical and enhanced osteoconductive properties as compared to PLLA/nHA.

Electrocatalytic water splitting is an environmentally benign technique for hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) production. Here, synthesis of Ti3C2@MoO3 nanocomposite by hydrothermal method with improved electrocatalytic activity and stability for overall water splitting is reported. In Ti3C2@MoO3 nanocomposite, Ti3C2 acts as a conductive material to facilitate rapid electron transfer whereas; MoO3 provides long-term stability and prevents Ti3C2 nanosheets from restacking. These combined properties of Ti3C2 nanosheets and MoO3 nanobelts exhibited improved HER and OER performance at a low overpotential of 91 mV and 190 mV at a current density of 10 mAcm−2 with long term durability for 50 h. The strong electronic coupling effect between Ti3C2 MXene and MoO3 nanobelts can accelerate HER/OER kinetics. This study opens new avenues for developing efficient and durable electrocatalytic systems for water splitting.

We report here the synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial evaluation of transition metal complexes of Ni, Cu, Co, Mn, Zn, and Cd (6a&ndash, f), using a Schiff base ligand (5) derived from naproxen (an anti-inflammatory drug) and 5-bromosalicylaldehyde by a series of reactions. The ligand and the synthesized complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, UV-Visible, FTIR, and XRD techniques. The ligand 5 behaves as a bidentate donor and coordinates with metals in square planar or tetrahedral fashion. In order to evaluate its bioactivity profile, we screened the Schiff base ligand and its metal complexes (6a&ndash, f) against different species of bacteria and the complexes were found to exhibit significant antibacterial activity. The complexes showed more potency against Bacillus subtilis as compared to the other species. Moreover, we modeled these complexes&rsquo, binding affinity against COX1 protein using computational docking.

Two extraction chromatography resins were prepared for the first time by impregnating multiple diglycolamide-functionalized ligands such as diglycolamide-calix[4]arene (C4DGA) and tripodal diglycolamide (T-DGA) on Chromosorb-W, an inert solid support, for the removal of hazardous actinides like Am(III) from radioactive waste solutions at 3 M nitric acid. The resins were characterized by SEM, thermal and surface area (BET) analyses. The sorption of Am(III) on the two resins followed pseudo-second order sorption rate kinetics and was exothermic in nature. The sorption of trivalent f-elements proceeded through a chemisorption monolayer phenomenon as analyzed by using several isotherm models. The negative free energy change (ΔG) values of −34.46 and −28.45 kJ/mol for T-DGA and C4DGA, respectively, indicate a chemical interaction between the metal ions and the ligands on the surface of the resins. Distribution coefficient measurements of various metal ions showed a selective sorption of trivalent f-elements over hexavalent uranyl ions and other fission product elements. Column studies on breakthrough indicated 0.76 and 0.37 mg/g as the breakthrough capacities of the T-DGA and the C4DGA resins, respectively. Several diglycolamide-functionalized calix[4]arenes containing four and eight diglycolamide (DGA) moieties were evaluated for their relative extraction efficiencies towards Y(III) and Sr(II). Ligands containing four DGA units with n-propyl, iso-pentyl, and n-octyl groups at the amidic N atom adjacent to the calix[4]arene skeleton showed efficient extraction of Y(III) from 3M HNO3. The extraction of Sr(II) was poor in all cases in the entire acidity range (0.1-6M HNO3) studied. The ligands with a hydrogen atom and an n-propyl group at the concerning amidic N atom showed a very high separation efficiency as reflected in separation factor (S.F.=DY/DSr) values in the range of 10(5)-10(6). A method was developed for the separation of carrier-free (90)Y from a (90)Y-(90)Sr mixture involving consecutive extraction-stripping cycles. The product purity was checked using half-life measurements. Two consecutive cycles of extraction and stripping were found to be sufficient for obtaining pure (90)Y. The results obtained in the present studies were compared with those obtained previously using analogous ligands such as TODGA (N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide), T2EHDGA (N,N,N',N'-tetra-2-ethylhexyl diglycolamide), and PC-88A (bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphonic acid).

Extraction of Am3+ was done using a both-side diglycolamide-functionalised calix[4]arene with eight DGA pendent arms (Calix8DGA) in several organic diluents. The observed extraction trend was nitrobenzene>n-dodecane (with 5% isodecanol as phase modifier) > phenyltrifluoromethylsulphone (PTMS) > hexone∼2- nitrophenyloctylether∼1-octanol>chloroform at 0.1 M HNO3, which changed at higher acidities (3 M) showing crossovers between the nitrobenzene-n-dodecane and the PTMS-hexone pairs. The Am3+ extraction as a function of the nitric acid concentration showed increasing D values with increasing acidities. The extraction behaviour was correlated with various parameters such as Schmidt's diluent parameter, dielectric constant and so on. The nature of the extracted species was ascertained in various diluents by the slope analysis method, while temperature variation studies were carried out to determine the thermodynamic parameters, which in turn explain the extraction mechanism. The separation behaviour of Am3+ with respect to UO22+ and Sr2+ was also investigated in these diluents.

Rhodamine-based fluorescent chemosensors 1 and 2 exhibit selective fluorescence enhancement to Fe3+ and Hg2+ over other metal ions at 580 nm in CH3CN/H2O (3/1, v/v) solution. Bis(rhodamine) chemosensor 1, under optimized conditions (CH3CN/HEPES buffer (0.02 M, pH = 7.0) (95/5, v/v)), shows a high selectivity and sensitivity to Hg2+, with a linear working range of 0–50 μM, a wide pH span of 4–10, and a detection limit of 0.4 μM Hg2+.

Five diglycolamide-appended calix[4]arene (C4DGA) ligands, viz. C4DGA with no substituent (L-I), n-propyl (L-II), 3-pentyl (L-III), n-octyl (L-IV) and both side (L-V) substituents were evaluated for the separation of carrier free 90Y from a 90Y–90Sr mixture using the flat sheet supported liquid membrane technique. Based on the results of earlier batch studies, the transport properties of the C4DGA ligands towards Y(III) and Sr(II) were monitored at two different feed acidities. The transport rates were significantly lower for 6 M HNO3 as compared to 3 M HNO3 as the feed. After 6 h, the observed trend of Y(III) transport with the C4DGA ligands using a feed of 3 M HNO3 was: L-I ~ L-III > L-V > L-IV > L-II which changed to L-III > L-I > L-IV > L-V > L-II for 6 M HNO3 as the feed. With 3 M HNO3 as feed, >97% Y(III) transport was obtained with L-I and L-III in 6 h. Comparative Sr(II) transport was negligible resulting in high decontamination factors. In a one-step separation process, using L-I as the carrier ligand, pure 90Y was obtained as the respective complex with either EDTA or DOTA. The highlights of this liquid membrane-based separation method comprise: its easiness, one-step separation, low ligand inventory, relatively pure product and continuous method.

The electronic and redox properties of the title polyanions have been calculated by means of density functional theory (DFT). These were unrestricted open-shell systems with electronic configuration of d1 of V. In this behalf, energies and compositions of α-LUMO, β-LUMO, α-HOMO, and β-HOMO were also analyzed. First of all, electronic and redox properties of vanadosilicate [Si8V14O50]12– (system 1) were calculated and then SiIV was substituted with GeIV, PV, and AsV for further investigations of systems 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The substitution greatly modifies the electronic properties as α-LUMOs are quite different in all the studied systems. The α-LUMO is mainly composed of V and O in system 1, V and Ge in system 2, V and O in system 3, and As, O, and V in system 4. The alpha HOMO–LUMO energy gaps are greatly reduced in systems 2, 3, and 4 as compared with system 1. The system 4 [As8V14O50]4– has minimal value of total bonding energy, whereas system 2 [Ge8V14O50]12– has maximal, so energetically system 4 is more favourable than the others. After the first reduction, α-LUMO in [Si8V14O50]14– is made up of V and Si, β-LUMO in [Ge8V14O50]13– is concentrated on V and Ge, β-LUMO in [P8V14O50]5– is composed of V only, whereas β-LUMO in [As8V14O50]5– is delocalized over V, O, and As with almost the same contribution of all three atoms.

Assembled diglycolamides (DGAs) have a strong affinity toward f-element ions at high nitric acid concentrations. Small angle X-ray scattering studies revealed that nitric acid concentration dependent changes occur in the geometrical arrangement of the DGA units of monomeric methacryloyl-DGA and the corresponding polymeric DGA. Cylindrical aggregates of methacryloyl-DGA were formed in 10:1 n-dodecane:1-decanol (added for solubility reasons) upon equilibration with nitric acid. The lengths and diameters of the cylindrical methacryloyl-DGA aggregates increased on varying the nitric acid concentration from 3 to 4 mol L-1. This resulted in an increase of the distribution coefficient (D) of Eu3+ ions from 72 to 197. The physical structure of cross-linked (10 mol %) poly(methacryloyl-DGA) reorganized distinctly upon equilibration with nitric acid. In this case, also the DEu3+ values increased significantly from 147 mL g-1 at 1 mol L-1 HNO3 to ∼4000 mL g-1 at 4 mol L-1 HNO3. Hydrogen bonds between the outer sphere of Eu3+/Am3+/Pu4+ nitrate and DGA units provide stabilization in the hydrophobic environment. This results in enhancement of their extraction upon increasing nitric acid concentration both in the organic phase as well as in the polymer matrix. Though monomeric and polymeric methacryloyl-DGA are different in their physical assembling, the normalized DI values for a same f-element ion upon varying HNO3 concentrations show remarkably similar patterns in both forms. In addition, the unusual stoichiometry deduced from the slopes of the log D vs log[HNO3] curves at fixed nitrate concentration seems to suggest that the normal extraction mechanism may not be operating in the hydrogen bonded DGA assemblies. Two new diglycolamide-based task-specific ionic liquids (DGA[BOND]TSILs) were evaluated for the extraction of actinides and lanthanides from acidic feed solutions. These DGA[BOND]TSILs were capable of exceptionally high extraction of trivalent actinide ions, such as Am3+, and even higher extraction of the lanthanide ion, Eu3+ (about 5–10 fold). Dilution of the DGA[BOND]TSILs in an ionic liquid, C4mim+⋅NTf2−, afforded reasonably high extraction ability, faster mass transfer, and more efficient stripping of the metal ion. The nature of the extracted species was studied by slope analysis, which showed that the extracted species contained one NO3− anion, along with the participation of two DGA[BOND]TSIL molecules. Time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) analysis showed a strong complexation with no inner-sphere water molecule in the EuIII[BOND]DGA[BOND]TSIL complexes in the presence and absence of C4mim+⋅NTf2− as the diluent. The very high radiolytic stability of DGA[BOND]TSIL 6 makes it one of the most-efficient solvent systems for the extraction of actinides under acidic feed conditions.

Different diglycolamide (DGA)-substituted calix[4]arene-based extractants were synthesized and evaluated for the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III), representative trivalent actinide and lanthanide ions, respectively. On the narrow rim of the calix[4]arene platform, the DGA moiety was either 1,3-di- or tetrasubstituted with a varying spacer length between the oxygen and amide nitrogen atom. In addition, DGA groups were appended both to the wide rim and to both rims of calix[4]arenes and their efficiencies were compared for Am(III) and Eu(III) extraction at three different feed acidities. The extraction and separation efficiencies strongly depended on the N-alkyl substituent as well as the spacer length. 1,3-Di-DGA-substituted calix[4]arenes are inferior extractants to the corresponding tetra-DGA-substituted ones. Narrow rim DGA-functionalized derivatives resulted in high extraction efficiencies, while the wide rim DGA-functionalized calix[4]arenes showed practically no extraction

Various ligands with structural modifications of the N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentanediamide (TODGA) skeleton were synthesised in good yields. These modifications include (1) the increase in chain length from one carbon to two carbons between the central ether oxygen atom and the amide moieties, (2) the addition of substituents on the carbon between the central oxygen atom and the amide moieties on one and both sides of the central oxygen, (3) the replacement of the central oxygen by a (substituted) nitrogen atom and (4) synthesis of a rigidified glycolamide. The effect of the structural modifications on their extraction behaviours toward Am(III) and Eu(III) at various nitric acid concentrations was studied. In most of the cases, the extraction does not exceed that of TODGA in the entire acidity range of 0.001-4mol/l HNO3. The extraction behaviour of monomethyl-TODGA derivative 10a resembles that of TODGA at high nitric acid concentrations. However, at lower acidities, its D values are much lower, which is beneficial for possible back-extraction steps. The aza-tripodal ligands 18a,b show reverse extraction properties compared to TODGA as far as the pH influence is concerned: at pH 2, the DAm values are 49.9 and 3.1, the DEu values are 5.9 and 0.2, and the SAm/Eu values are 8 and 11, respectively.

Extraction of Am3+ from acidic feed solutions was investigated using novel solvent systems containing a tripodal diglycolamide (T-DGA) in three room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL), viz. [C4mim][NTf2], [C6mim][NTf2] and [C8mim][NTf2]. Compared to the results obtained with N,N,N′,N′-tetra-n-octyl diglycolamide (TODGA), T-DGA gave significantly higher distribution coefficients in these RTILs. The DAm values decreased with increasing carbon chain length in the RTILs, which was related to the solubility of the RTIL in the aqueous phase. The distribution studies included the effect of equilibration time, aqueous phase acid concentration variation and T-DGA concentration variation. In general, significantly higher equilibration times were observed for the extraction systems, which was partly due to the viscous RTIL phase and partly due to the slow conformational changes of the T-DGA ligand during complexation. Apart from Am3+, extraction of Pu4+, UO22+, Eu3+, Sr2+ and Cs+ was also investigated, since they have significant implications in radioactive waste processing. Stripping studies indicated >99% stripping in three stages using 0.5 M EDTA or DTPA in 1 M guanidine carbonate. Slope analysis indicated the extraction of 1 : 1 complexed species of Am(III) with T-DGA. Time resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) studies showed a strong complexation with no inner-sphere water molecules in the Eu(III)–T-DGA complexes for [C4mim][NTf2] as the diluent. Radiolytic degradation studies of the solvent systems containing T-DGA in the three RTILs were also carried out and while the DAm values decreased marginally when the solvents were exposed to 500 kGy absorbed dose, a relatively sharp decrease (60%) was seen when the solvents were exposed further to 1000 kGy absorbed dose, suggesting the possibility of recycling. Extraction studies were also carried out at varying temperatures and the thermodynamic parameters were calculated.
