Organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) are the basic elements of organic circuits towards flexible, printable, and wearable electronics. Low‐energy‐consumption OFETs with high mobility are the prerequisite for practical applications. After 30 years of development, OFETs have progressed rapidly, from field‐effect materials to devices, and from individual device to small‐ and medium‐scale integration. Here, a brief retrospective of OFETs' development over the past decades, and the emerging opportunities and challenges from device physics, multifunctional materials to integrated application are presented. A new derivate of tetracene (DTTA) was synthesized and characterized. From the UV spectrum, compound DTTA showed more stability than rubrene towards photo–oxidization in solid state. The increased stability of DTTA could be explained by the lower energy level of HOMO. Crystal structure is similar to that of rubrene, and based on the calculated results from the Pw91pw91/6-31 g software, good performance of DTTA is expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organic semiconductor crystals (OSCs) present better charge transport characteristics than organic semiconductor films. OSCs have captured worldwide attention because they show great potential for optoelectronic devices, including organic field-effect transistors, active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes, radio frequency identification tags, and sensors. Well-patterned OSCs minimize crosstalk between neighboring devices and decrease leakage current. Therefore, patterning OSCs offers more opportunities for advanced optoelectronic applications. In this work, OSC patterning strategies, advances in applications based on well-patterned OSCs, and challenges and outlooks in the field are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preparing two‐dimensional conjugated polymers (2DCPs) with desirable structures and semiconducting properties is promising but remains a great challenge. Presented here is a new 2DCP, named 2D polytriethyltriindole (2DPTTI), which is efficiently synthesized by a modified interfacial Suzuki reaction from 2,7,12‐tribromo‐5,10,15‐triethyltriindole (2‐BrTTI) and 1,4‐benzenediboronic acid dipinacol ester (BADE) precursors at room temperature. Wafer‐scale free‐standing 2DPTTI films with controllable thicknesses between 2.5 and 46.0 nm were obtained by adjusting the experimental conditions. The resulting 2DPTTI films, used as an active layer in organic field effect transistors (OFETs), exhibited typical p‐type semiconducting properties and superior UV optoelectronic performance with a photosensitivity of 3.7×103 and responsivity of 1.4×103 A W−1, as well as a light‐blue fluorescence character. This report provides a general approach for constructing various semiconducting 2DCPs, by an interfacial Suzuki reaction, towards multifunctional organic electronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The organic field‐effect transistor (OFET) is the basic building block of integrated circuits. The charge carrier mobility and operating frequency of OFETs have continued to increase; therefore, the power dissipation of OFETs can no longer be ignored. Many research efforts have been made to develop low‐power‐consumption OFETs and complementary circuits. Despite the switching function, OFETs can also be utilized in emerging energy‐related applications, such as near‐infrared (NIR) photodetectors and organic thermoelectric devices. Organic phototransistors show considerably higher photo responsivity than other photodetector architectures due to field‐effect charge modulation. The photoinduced gate modulating largely suppresses the dark current while simultaneously providing gain. These characteristics may favor NIR light detection and suggest that the organic phototransistor is a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications in the NIR regime. For organic thermoelectric applications, OFETs can work as a powerful tool for examining the charge and energy transport in the organic semiconductor, thus giving insight into organic thermoelectric studies. In this review, the authors highlight recent advances in OFET‐ related energy topics, including low‐power‐consumption OFETs, NIR photodetectors, and organic thermoelectric devices. A new thiophene/anthracene derivative, 2,5-di (anthracen-2-yl)thieno [3,2-b]thiophene (2,5-DATT) which integrates excellent charge carrier transport property with the highest mobility of 0.92 cm2 V−1 s−1, high fluorescence quantum yield of 46.08% and high photoresponsivity is developed. Ultrasensitive UV phototransistor with responsivity up to 1.5 × 104 AW−1 and detectivity exceeding 3 × 1015 Jones is also demonstrated. These results show a feasible method for designing and synthesizing multifunctional materials. A new organic semiconductor 2,5-di (anthracen-2-yl)thieno [3,2-b]thiophene (2,5-DATT) is designed and synthesized. The excellent optoelectronic properties make 2,5-DATT a good candidate applied to multifunctional optoelectronic devices and show a feasible method for designing and synthesizing multifunctional materials.
