Most of the existing stability analysis methods are capable of determining the oscillatory stability of black-box converter interfaced generators (CIGs) under given operating conditions only but can hardly identify the critical operating conditions. In this letter, an oscillatory stability region (OSR) is defined with the short-circuit ratio and output power as variables, and a method to obtain the OSR for the black-box CIG is proposed. First, the CIG is modeled as a variable-operating-point impedance model (VOPIM) through perturbation tests. Then, the critical operating points, for which the CIG system has a zero-damping oscillation mode, are determined by VOPIM-based oscillatory stability analysis so as to obtain the OSR. Finally, the accuracy of the OSR is verified through control hardware-in-the-loop tests. The OSR is of significant meaning for the control strategy and operation plan optimization of the CIGs. The interactions between permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) and weak grids may cause negatively damped or growing subsynchronous oscillation (SSO). The growing-SSO would evolve into a sustained-SSO when it is predominantly governed by the nonlinearities in the PMSG's converter control, such as current limiter. Most of the existing frequency-domain modeling and stability analysis methods are in the small-signal sense and thus unable to consider the impact of such nonlinearities. Besides, these methods can hardly give vital information to characterize the sustained-SSO, for instance, the magnitude. This paper presents a detailed characteristic analysis of the sustained-SSO while accounting for the effect of current limiter nonlinearity. First, a single-input-single-output (SISO) frequency-domain model of the PMSG is developed. This SISO model comprises the transfer functions of outer-/inner-loop controls and phase-locked loop (PLL). The nonlinear part, i.e., current limiter, is incorporated into the model using the describing function (DF) method. Then, the equivalent transformation on the system's closed-loop characteristic equation is used to separate the SISO model into independent linear and nonlinear parts. This separation enables the use of the DF-based Nyquist criterion for evaluating the system stability and determining oscillation attributes, such as the magnitude and frequency. The complex interactions between renewables and AC/DC networks have brought new oscillation issues. To effectively monitor and suppress these oscillations, the observability and controllability of the oscillatory modes at different locations of the system must be investigated. To achieve this, the paper first defines the concept of modal observability and controllability using the responses of unit-pulse perturbations. Then an eigenvalue-decomposition based method is proposed to calculate these two indexes with the impedance network model (INM) as the input. The obtained modal observability(controllability) has many important applications and one of them is to facilitate the aggregation of the INM. The paper investigates this application by selecting an optimal aggregation port to ensure that the aggregated impedance can reflect the complete system dynamics. Finally, the proposed method is verified on a simple passive circuit and a practical wind power system that experienced actual subsynchronous resonance incidents. With the increasing penetration of converter based renewable generators into the modern power systems, subsynchronous control interaction (SSCI) phenomenon is jeopardizing the equipment safety and system stability. For the analysis and prevention, it is critically important to identify the source of such sub/super-synchronous oscillation caused by the SSCI. This article first develops three criteria for determining the SSCI sources based on sub/super-synchronous powers and impedances. One of the criteria takes into account the coupling effects between sub- and super-synchronous frequencies. Then, a general framework for the SSCI source identification is established, which is based on wide-area monitoring of the sub/super-synchronous power flows obtained from measured voltage and current phasors. Finally, the proposed identification criterion and framework are verified on the electromagnetic transient model of the Hami wind power system, which has experienced an actual SSCI incident. The results indicated that the wind farms based on type-4 wind turbine generators were the main sources of oscillation, while nearby thermal power plants were the sinks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analytically examines how the condition of weak grid connection affects the torsional sub-synchronous oscillations (SSOs) induced by a grid-connected DFIG in a power system. The examination focuses on the SSO mode of grid-connected DFIG, which is dominated by the phase locked loop (PLL) or DC voltage control. Theoretical analysis is carried out to prove that the condition of weak grid connection amplifies the impact of modal resonance between the DFIG and torsional dynamics of synchronous generators. The amplifying effect of weak grid connection exhibits as the decrease of damping of SSO mode of DFIG and increase of the associated residue when the grid connection weakens. Consequently, the DFIG is more likely to induce torsional SSOs under the condition of weak grid connection, leading to system instability in the worst case. Analytical examination presented in the paper reveals the mechanism about how the condition of weak grid connection plays a key role for the DFIG to induce the torsional SSOs. An example multi-machine power system with the grid-connected DFIG is presented. The increasing penetration of renewables into modern power systems is bringing new oscillatory stability concerns. It is of significance to find all oscillatory modes concerned and evaluate components’ participation into each mode, especially the dominant one. To address this issue, a frequency-domain modal analysis method is developed in this paper. It represents the target system with a networked impedance model and works out the oscillatory modes by locating the zeros of the determinant of the loop impedance matrix or nodal admittance matrix. Loop/nodal participation factors, branch observability, and component sensitivity are derived to give insight into the oscillation, including its origin, oscillation path, and contributive components. The proposed method has been conducted on a simple passive circuit and a practical wind power system that experienced actual subsynchronous resonance incidents. Theoretical results as well as electromagnetic transient simulations have verified its effectiveness. With the increasing integration of power electronic converters into the power system, the interactions between converters and their adjacent transmissions bring emerging oscillation issues. A new type of sub- and super-synchronous interactions (S $^2$ SI) between STATCOMs and the weak AC/DC grid were detected in China Southern Grid. As an oscillation incident never reported before, as far as the authors know, its characteristics were quite different from the previous ones. Field measurements as well as simulation studies have revealed that the various factors contributing to the S $^2$ SI include the number of online STATCOMs, the strength of the AC system (in terms of effective short-circuit ratio), the status of series compensation, and the loading level of the HVDC. The mechanism of such oscillation has been clarified and it is caused by the S $^2$ SI between STATCOMs and weak AC grids, where sub- and super-synchronous components are involved in a coupled way. To fully represent such a coupling effect, the concept of sub- and super-synchronous coupled impedance model (IM), or S $^2$ SC-IM, is proposed and developed in order to establish a stability criterion for the S $^2$ SI. Based on the IM-based method as well as the time-domain simulations, the impacts on S $^2$ SI from the various factors are quantitatively analyzed. The results show good consistence among theoretical analysis, electromagnetic simulations, and field measurements. Recent years have witnessed emerging oscillatory stability issues in power systems with high-penetration renewables. These issues are generally caused by the dynamic interaction between the AC/DC grid and power electronic converters used for the integration of renewables. Some previous studies have explored the issues with simplified system models containing only a few converters and idealized networks. However, the interactions between many converters and traditional generators/HVDCs have not been fully considered. To fill this gap, this paper first presents the concept of a unified dq frame impedance network model (INM), with which different converters as well as traditional generators/HVDCs can be incorporated to form an integrated s-domain model of a practical system. As the INM is aggregated into a lumped impedance matrix, a new criterion is then proposed to quantify the oscillatory stability, just by analyzing the frequency characteristics of the determinant of the matrix. Finally, the modeling method and the stability criterion are applied to a real-world system with a very high share of renewables and a realistic risk of oscillatory instability. The subsynchronous resonance (SSR) problem may become more serious with the continuous evolvement of a series-compensated power system. Consequently, the existing SSR mitigation scheme might no longer keep the system stable. This issue has been encountered by Shangdu Power Plant, where the deployed supplementary excitation damping controllers (SEDCs) that well stabilized the system before cannot maintain torsional stability after the recent change occurred in the power system. Therefore, a combined mitigation scheme of SEDC and generator terminal subsynchronous damping controller (GTSDC) is proposed in this paper to regain system stability. SEDC provides electrical damping by modulating the excitation voltage at the rotor side. Meanwhile, GTSDC can damp SSR via injecting super-synchronous and subsynchronous currents into the generator stator. Field tests have proven the effectiveness of this combined scheme in addressing the deteriorated SSR issue. Eigenvalue analysis indicates that the combined scheme can provide enough positive damping for the system under any operating condition. Thanks to the low investment of SEDC and the flexibility of GTSDC, this combined scheme provides an economical and scalable solution for SSR mitigation, especially when the target system changes constantly.
