The article focuses on the photo safari camps being offered by Gametrackers International into the Okavango Delta in Bostwana. The Okavango River flows south then east from Angola and empties into this 12,000-square-mile delta--a life-giving water cooler to the profusion of animals in the surrounding Kalahari Desert. The camps, first built as hunting lodges, accommodate 16 to 24 guests in simple thatched or reed hunts, tents or A-frames. The author relates his own experience visiting the Delta.

This article presents a travel guide to the African safari. The first order of business of travelling to a safari is to decide where to go. Safaris usually take place in or near national parks in two regions of Africa: Southern and East Africa. Southern Africa is no jungle, but vegetation tends to be thicker and more lush than East Africa. The weather is milder and more consistent year-round. Some tour operators recommend going to South Africa and Botswana in July and August because this is the dry season. The few remaining water sources attract more wildlife, and the spare foliage makes its easier to view animals close up. Meanwhile, East Africa's main attraction is the migration of herds of animals in the plains of Kenya and Tanzania. It occurs twice a year, after the rainy seasons. In the late spring, herds of wildebeests, antelopes and zebras leave the Serengeti in Tanzania and arrive in Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve in late July. Mark Harris, veteran organizer, runs the Mahia Hunt Club with the Urewera being a popular event set every two years. The safari was done in February 2010 with 118 participant vehicles, plus the organizers and control vehicles. Although some changes in itinerary were made due to rains, the safari was considered successful.
