The production of nitrous oxide, N2O, via NH3 oxidation is not on a practical scale due to the lack of a suitable catalyst. Instead, it is produced via thermal decomposition of NH4NO3, rendering N2O too costly and limiting its prospective uses. Herein, we report CeO2‐supported Au nanoparticles (2–3 nm) as a highly selective catalyst for low‐temperature NH3 oxidation to N2O, exhibiting two orders of magnitude higher space–time yield than the state‐of‐the‐art Mn−Bi/α‐Al2O3 and remarkable stability over 70 h on stream. The reaction proceeds via a Mars–van Krevelen mechanism, with the density of interfacial Auδ+ species and the oxygen storage capacity of CeO2 identified as the key performance descriptors. The latter could be enhanced by cobalt doping, improving the catalytic activity and setting a new benchmark for N2O productivity. Porous MnO2 microspheres distributed around magnetic carbon-coated cobalt nanoparticles were developed. The performance of these nanoparticles rivals that of Pd-based catalysts for the selective oxidation of alcohols. The determination of structure-performance relationships of ceria in heterogeneous reactions is enabled by the control of the crystal shape and morphology. Whereas the (100) surface, predominantly exposed in nanocubes, is optimal for CO oxidation, the (111) surface, prevalent in conventional polyhedral CeO2 particles, dominates in C2H2 hydrogenation. This result is attributed to the different oxygen vacancy chemistry on these facets. In contrast to oxidations, hydrogenations on CeO2 are favored over low-vacancy surfaces owing to the key role of oxygen on the stabilization of reactive intermediates. Rutile TiO2 is a heavily investigated oxide with, to date, scarce applications in industrial catalysis. The inactivity of this material in oxidations has been related to its inability to dissociate molecular oxygen. Herein we show how rutile catalyzes the oxidation of HBr to Br2 through defect states that are introduced during the reaction. The identification of active, stable, and abundant materials for bromine production is key to the future implementation of Br2-mediated alkane functionalization processes. The catalytic properties of TiO2 are discussed in comparison to expensive rutile-type oxides, such as RuO2 and IrO2, on the basis of surface characterization and molecular modeling. Uranium oxide finely dispersed on ZrO2 crystals represents an effective and robust catalyst for the industrially relevant oxidation of HCl to chlorine. Remarkably, the catalytic performance increases significantly during the first 80 h on stream and remains stable thereafter. According to XRD results, this self-activation of the catalyst is accompanied by the disappearance of the starting α-U3O8 phase. The uranium distribution on the ZrO2 crystals at different stages of the reaction was visualized by aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM. The mostly mono-atomic uranium oxide layers present in the fresh catalyst broaden during reaction and often form a homogeneous coating over the support crystals comprising small uranium oxide species mostly comprising a single uranium atom. These species are found to be often located on top of columns of ZrO7 polyhedra, pointing to a strong fixation on the carrier. The article discusses the unique stability of delafossite copper chromium oxide (CuCrO2) during oxidation and chlorination. It presents a novel CuCrO2-cerium oxide (CeO2 composite for hydrogen chloride (HCl) oxidation to build on the result with fourfold activity. It states that in an equimolar mixture of copper oxide (Cu2O), single-phase cuprous delafossites were synthesized at 1273-1423 Kelvin (K) for 30 hours.

RuO2/SnO2-Al2O3 has been recently reported as an industrial catalyst for Cl2 production through HCl oxidation. The stabilizing role of the alumina binder in the material, essential for its durable performance, is elucidated here. Al2O3 prevents chlorination of the SnO2 carrier under relevant reaction conditions, whereas, in its absence, SnO2 losses exceed 80 wt % in very short times owing to volatilization as SnCl4. Characterization by using X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen, and high-resolution TEM indicates expansion of the cassiterite cell in the SnO2-Al2O3 composite with respect to pure SnO2, which suggests the insertion of certain Al species upon mechanochemical and thermal activation of the oxide mixture. 27Al magic-angle spinning NMR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal that the pentahedrally coordinated Al3+ cations interact with SnO2, generating an electron-depleted region near the surface of SnO2 particles. This induces some acidic character in cassiterite, which possibly makes it inert toward HCl. Besides this electronic effect, the presence of thin porous amorphous alumina films, partly covering the SnO2 surface, can offer additional geometric protection of the support. Mechanical mixing followed by calcination is essential to attain stabilization, and maximized effects are achieved with a high-surface area alumina. Other oxides such as SiO2 are ineffective in preventing tin losses during HCl oxidation. The practical implications of these findings are very important. In heterogeneous catalysis, rates with Arrhenius-like temperature dependence are ubiquitous. Compensation phenomena, which arise from the linear correlation between the apparent activation energy and the logarithm of the apparent pre-exponential factor, are also common. Here, we study the origin of compensation and find a similar dependence on the rate-limiting surface coverage term for each Arrhenius parameter. This result is derived from an experimental determination of the surface coverage of oxygen and chlorine species using temporal analysis of products and prompt gamma activation analysis during HCl oxidation to Cl2 on a RuO2 catalyst. It is also substantiated by theory. We find that compensation phenomena appear when the effect on the apparent activation energy caused by changes in surface coverage is balanced out by the entropic configuration contributions of the surface. Abstract: The mechanism of ammonia oxidation over Pt, Pd, and Rh wires has been investigated in the Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor at relevant temperatures in industrial ammonia burners. The results of primary and secondary () interactions with isotopically labeled ammonia at 1073 K enable to conclude that the overall reaction pathways to NO, N2O, and N2 are equivalent on the three noble metals. NO is a primary reaction product, while N2 and N2O originate from consecutive NO transformations. The extent of the secondary reactions determines the net NO selectivity. Rhodium is the most active catalyst for the unwanted reduction of NO by NH3, while platinum shows the lowest activity. This explains the superior NO selectivity attained over Pt and, therefore, its industrial application. The TAP-derived selectivity ranking was substantiated by Density Functional Theory calculations on the (100) facets of the noble metals. We proved experimentally that NO selectivity approaching 100% at complete NH3 conversion can be equivalently attained over Pt, Pd, and Rh by increasing the oxygen content in the feed. For a feed of , both N2O and N2 production are suppressed due to the impeded NO dissociation and favored NO desorption at high oxygen coverage. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor was used to study the mechanism of ammonia oxidation at high temperature (1073 K) over Fe2O3, Cr2O3, and CeO2. The results were compared with those obtained over the industrially applied Pt95–Rh5 alloy. Analysis of characteristic times of the transient responses of N2 and NO made it possible to gain insight into the sequence of their formation. A common feature of both metal oxide and noble metal catalysts is that NO is a primary product of NH3 oxidation, whereas N2 results mainly from secondary transformations of NO. The amount of N2O formed over the oxides was minimal. Multipulse NH3 experiments in the absence of gas-phase O2 give unequivocal evidence of the participation of surface lattice oxygen of the metal oxides in the reaction of NH3 to NO. The degree of reduction of the oxide surface determines the product distribution but does not alter the catalytic activity for NH3 conversion. Greater reduction favors the reaction channel to N2 over that to NO. The desired reaction follows a Mars–van Krevelen-type scheme involving the participation of lattice oxygen in the NH3 conversion to NO and regeneration of the so-formed vacancies by gas-phase O2 and bulk lattice oxygen. Replenishment of surface vacancies by the diffusion of bulk oxygen occurs to a significant extent over Fe2O3. However, when NH3 and O2 are fed together, dissociative adsorption of gas-phase oxygen can be considered the main mechanism for vacancy regeneration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The high-temperature catalytic partial oxidation (CPO) of methane over a platinum gauze reactor was modeled by three-dimensional numerical simulations of the flow field coupled with heat transport as well as detailed gas-phase and surface reaction mechanisms. Model results agree well with data of CPO experiments over Pt-gauzes in the literature, confirming the presence of strong mass and heat-transport limitations. The conversions of CH4 and O2 increase with an increased contact time and were practically constant in the temperature range of 1000–1200K. The selectivity to CO linearly increases with temperature. H2 was only observed above 1200K, below this temperature H2O was the only hydrogen-containing product. The contribution of heterogeneous steps in the overall process is prominent, but in the later stages of the reactor, gas-phase reactions become significant at certain conditions of temperature, pressure, and residence time. For example, simulations predicted some gas-phase production of ethane and ethylene via methane oxidative coupling at elevated pressure and residence time. The study shows that today''s CFD tools allow the implementation of detailed homogeneous and heterogeneous reaction schemes even for complex catalyst geometries. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Transient isotopic studies in the Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor evidenced a clear mechanistic regularity between methane and propane for N2O reduction over Fe-silicalite in the temperature range of 623–773K. The lifetime of the oxygen species generated by N2O decomposition on extraframework iron sites was found to be crucial for alkane oxidation. When N2O and CH4 or C3H8 were pulsed together over Fe-silicalite, oxygen species deposited on iron sites effectively activated the hydrocarbon. However, these oxygen species become inactive for alkane oxidation if the pulses of N2O and the alkane were separated by more than 0.1s. Transient studies have indicated that C3H8 is more efficient for N2O reduction than CH4, as expected from the facilitated activation of the Con increasing the carbon number in alkanes. Abstract: The mechanism of the reaction of N2O and 13CO over Fe-silicalite was investigated with the use of the temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor and compared with that of the reaction of N2O and C3H8 previously reported (Appl. Catal. A 267 (2004) 181). Upon direct N2O decomposition at 523–573 K, Fe-silicalite stored ca. 1018 atoms of oxygen per gram, with a ratio of 1 O atom per each 30–60 Fe atoms in the sample. Only a small fraction of the deposited oxygen was reactive for CO oxidation. Pump-probe experiments at different time delays (0–2 s) between the pulses of nitrous oxide and the reducing agent indicated the markedly different mechanisms of the N2O–13CO and N2O–C3H8 reactions in the temperature range of 623–673 K. Fe-silicalite is active for propane oxidation in the presence of short-lived oxygen species, that are produced when N2O and C3H8 are pulsed simultaneously. Time delays between the N2O and C3H8 pulses greater than 0.1 s are sufficient to transform these active oxygen species for hydrocarbon conversion into inactive ones. In contrast, the oxidation of CO by N2O does not depend on the lifetime of the oxygen species in the range of time delays investigated. The mechanisms of the N2O-mediated 13CO and C3H8 oxidations differ as a consequence of the different interactions of the two reducing agents with iron species in the zeolite. Pulse experiments support the occurrence of the scavenging mechanism with both propane and carbon monoxide. In this mechanism, short-lived oxygen deposited by N2O is efficiently eliminated by the reductant. Distinctive to propane, the strikingly high affinity of carbon monoxide for isolated Fe3+ ions in the zeolite gives rise to an additional pathway for N2O reduction in the presence of chemisorbed CO species. Thegas-phase oxidation of hydrogen halides to the correspondinghalogens has gained industrial relevance following the recent discoveryof active and stable heterogeneous catalysts based on RuO2and CeO2. These developments originated from the needof polyurethane and polycarbonate producers to recycle the large amountsof byproduct HCl to Cl2for further use in the phosgenationstep. More recently, the catalyzed HBr oxidation to Br2has been regarded as an enabling technology for bromine-mediatedalkane functionalization processes. Ceria has been very successfully employed in oxidation catalysis, whereas its application in other reactions has been less intensively investigated. The catalytic activity of ceria can be further enhanced by the use of dopants, and it exhibits structure sensitivity for numerous processes. The rich chemistry of cerium oxide is gathered and discussed in the present work, where the nature of each step of the most common reactions performed on it is assessed. Chemically intuitive computational and experimental descriptors, namely acid-base, redox, and structural features, are put forward to correlate the observed trends among the different doped and undoped facets. Abstract: Experimental and theoretical studies reveal performance descriptors and provide molecular-level understanding of HCl oxidation over CeO2. Steady-state kinetics and characterization indicate that CeO2 attains a significant activity level, which is associated with the presence of oxygen vacancies. Calcination of CeO2 at 1173K prior to reaction maximizes both the number of vacancies and the structural stability of the catalyst. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy of samples exposed to reaction feeds with different O2/HClratios provide evidence that CeO2 does not suffer from bulk chlorination in O2-rich feeds (O2/HCl⩾ 0.75), while it does form chlorinated phases in stoichiometric or sub-stoichiometric feeds (O2/HCl⩽ 0.25). Quantitative analysis of the chlorine uptake by thermogravimetry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates that chlorination under O2-rich conditions is limited to few surface and subsurface layers of CeO2 particles, in line with the high energy computed for the transfer of Cl from surface to subsurface positions. Exposure of chlorinated samples to a Deacon mixture with excess oxygen rapidly restores the original activity levels, highlighting the dynamic response of CeO2 outermost layers to feeds of different composition. Density functional theory simulations reveal that Cl activation from vacancy positions to surface Ce atoms is the most energy-demanding step, although chlorine–oxygen competition for the available active sites may render re-oxidation as the rate-determining step. The substantial and remarkably stable Cl2 production and the lower cost of CeO2 make it an attractive alternative to RuO2 for catalytic chlorine recycling in industry. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The oxidation of HCl to Cl2 (Deacon process) was studied over RuO2-based catalysts in bulk and supported forms. RuO2 (7wt.%) was incorporated onto different TiO2 carriers (rutile, anatase, and P25) by deposition–precipitation of Ru(OH)2 followed by calcination. RuO2/TiO2-rutile exhibits the highest activity at ambient pressure in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor. Insights into the mechanism of this experimentally demanding reaction on RuO2 and the influence of the TiO2-rutile carrier were gained by studies in the Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) reactor at 623K. HCl multipulsing in the absence of O2 leads to chlorination of the catalysts with no detectable gas-phase Cl2 production. The chlorine uptake of RuO2 amounts to 0.16mmolCl , which enables to estimate that ca. 75% of the total surface Ru atoms (coordinatively unsaturated and bridge sites) are chlorinated, forming a RuO2− x Cl x oxychloride. RuO2 is also chlorinated by Cl2, but to a lesser extent compared to HCl. The chlorine uptake of fresh RuO2/TiO2-rutile per gram of sample was four times higher than that of fresh RuO2, namely due to chlorination of the high surface area carrier. Upon equilibration at ambient pressure under Deacon conditions, the TAP-derived chlorine uptake in the supported catalyst experienced a 6-fold decrease with respect to the fresh sample due to permanent chlorination. Pulsing of a mixture of O2 and HCl over the catalysts revealed that both gas-phase Cl2 evolution and H2O desorption are impeded processes. Pump–probe experiments of O2 and HCl evidenced the tight dependence of the net Cl2 production on both the oxygen and chlorine coverage. In addition, a limited contribution of lattice surface species could be detected by the production of small amounts of Cl2 at very low coverages. The equilibration procedure (ambient or TAP conditions) influences the reaction mechanism and the net Cl2 production, giving account of the reaction complexity due to the highly dynamic state of the catalyst surface. The Deacon process on RuO2− x Cl x -based catalysts can be mostly described by a Langmuir–Hinshelwood scheme with a minor 2D Mars–van Krevelen contribution. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: As-synthesised and reconstructed NH4-Al-dawsonite and NH4-Ga-dawsonite, and the materials obtained by thermal treatment in the range 373–873K, were studied as heterogeneous catalysts for the epoxidation of cyclooctene with hydrogen peroxide at 353K and ambient pressure by means of High-Throughput Experimentation. The structural, morphological, and textural properties of the materials were investigated by elemental analysis, ICP-OES, XRD, FTIR, TEM, N2 adsorption, and TGA. The temperature at which the dawsonite precursors were treated proved to be crucial in determining the activity of the catalysts. The best catalyst identified in this work was obtained by calcination at 573K of reconstructed Ga-dawsonite. This material provides an epoxide yield of 51% and 99% selectivity after 4h at 353K. Remarkably, many of the catalysts derived from Al-dawsonite displayed an enhanced epoxidation activity upon recycling, reaching up to 30% epoxide yield with 98% selectivity over Al-dawsonite treated at 473K.
