The role of the perovskite lattice oxygen in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is systematically studied in the PrBaCo2O5+δ family. The reduced number of physical/chemical variables combined with in‐depth characterizations such as neutron dif‐fraction, O K‐edge X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), magnetization and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) studies, helps investigating the complex correlation between OER activity and a single perovskite property, such as the oxygen content. The catalytic activity and selectivity of Pt nanoparticles towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were investigated as a function of the Pt catalyst distribution. By means of the sputtering deposition technique, it was possible to fabricate Pt catalysts with different loadings that consisted of dispersed 2-3 nm particles, nanoparticle agglomerates and extended particulate layers. The transition from dispersed nanoparticles to extended layers led to a decrease in the electrochemical surface area (ECSA, m2Pt gPt−1) and to a shift of the platinum oxide reduction peak to more positive potentials, which indicates a decrease in the adsorption energy for oxygenated species. The latter finding was correlated to the observed decrease in specific activity with the increasing ECSA, that is, in the case of isolated nanoparticles, the higher adsorption energy for oxygenated species causes a reduction in the specific activity towards the ORR as larger amounts of active sites are blocked compared to extended surfaces. The presented data of specific and mass activity versus ECSA were found to follow a 'master curve' obtained by comparing normalised Pt activities from different studies. The transition from dispersed Pt nanoparticles to extended layers also influences the Pt selectivity. At a decreased interparticle distance, a significant increase in the H2O2 production was observed below 0.6 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, which indicates the important role of a H2O2 desorption-readsorption reaction mechanism during the ORR on Pt nanoparticles. In this paper, we focus on the effect of processing-dependent lattice strain on oxygen ion conductivity in ceria based solid electrolyte thin films. This is of importance for technological applications, such as micro-SOFCs, microbatteries, and resistive RAM memories. The oxygen ion conductivity can be significantly modified by control of lattice strain, to an extent comparable to the effect of doping bulk ceria with cations of different diameters. The interplay of dopant radii, lattice strain, microstrain, anion-cation near order and oxygen ion transport is analyzed experimentally and interpreted with computational results. Key findings include that films annealed at 600 °C exhibit lattice parameters close to those of their bulk counterparts. With increasing anneal temperature, however, the films exhibited substantial compaction with lattice parameters decreasing by as much as nearly 2% (viz, Δd600-1100 °C: -1.7% (Sc+3) > -1.5% (Gd+3) > -1.2% (La+3)) for the annealing temperature range of 600-1100 °C. Remarkably 2/3rd of the lattice parameter change obtained in bulk ceria upon changing the acceptor diameter from the smaller Sc to larger La, can be reproduced by post annealing a film with fixed dopant diameter. While the impact of lattice compaction on defect association/ordering cannot be entirely excluded, DFT computation revealed that the main effect appears to result in an increase in migration energy and consequent drop in ionic conductivity. As a consequence, it is clear that annealing procedures should be held to a minimum to maintain the optimum level of oxygen ion conductivity for energy-related applications. Perovskite oxides have been gaining attention for its capability to be designed as an ideal electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Among promising candidates, the layered double perovskite—PrBaCo2O6-δ (PBC)—has been identified as the most active perovskite electrocatalyst for OER in alkaline media. For a single transition metal oxide catalyst, the addition of Fe enhances its electrocatalytic performance towards OER. To understand the role of Fe, herein, Fe is incorporated in PBC in different ratios, which yielded PrBaCo2(1-x)Fe2xCo6-δ (x = 0, 0.2 and 0.5). Fe-doped PBCF's demonstrate enhanced OER activities and stabilities. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed that Co is more stable in a lower oxidation state upon Fe incorporation by establishing charge stability. Hence, the degradation of Co is inhibited such that the perovskite structure is prolonged under the OER conditions, which allows it to serve as a platform for the oxy(hydroxide) layer formation. Overall, our findings underline synergetic effects of incorporating Fe into Co-based layered double perovskite in achieving a higher activity and stability during oxygen evolution reaction. Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is a promising technology for electricity-to-fuel conversion which allows for direct production of hydrogen from water. One of the key problems limiting widespread implementation of PEMWE into energy systems is the sluggish kinetics of the anodic process: the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Additionally, state-of-the-art OER materials contain large amounts of low abundant noble metals (Ru, Ir), and therefore, development of low-cost, highly active and stable OER catalysts remains an important challenge. We developed a synthetic approach to the iridium pyrochlores-complex oxides of iridium with reduced content of the noble metal as compared to IrO2. The materials were synthesized from molten sodium nitrate (Adams fusion method) at moderate temperatures (500-575 °C) and consist of highly crystalline iridium pyrochlore nanoparticles with surface areas of up to 40 m2 g-1, which is a significant improvement compared to the traditional high temperature solid-state synthesis. Electrochemical measurements in acidic media showed that yttrium and bismuth pyrochlore catalysts possess high OER activity approaching the activity of state-of-the-art IrO2 nanoparticles. High intrinsic activities and stability behavior of yttrium iridium catalysts were correlated with the formation of the highly active IrOx surface layer due to leaching of the Y3+ cations into the electrolyte solution, revealed both experimentally and computationally using density functional theory calculations.
