This paper mainly presents a complete analysis of the impact of such sanctions on the innovation performance of target countries by exploiting the difference‐in‐differences method for panel data of 91 countries in the period 1988–2016. The empirical results confirm a significantly negative impact of overall international sanctions on innovation in the target countries; moreover, except for noneconomic sanctions, other types of sanctions have a negative impact on the level of innovation in the target countries to varying degrees. These findings are also supported by two semiparametric matchings: artificially matching according to the two factors of geographical location and land area respectively and the propensity score matching, one nonparametric matching: entropy balancing, as well as the system generalized method of moments estimates that account for any bias due to lagged dependent variables. This paper also shows that the significantly negative effect of international sanctions is manifested in the countries with high levels of trade openness, globalization, and democracy, but not in the countries with low levels of trade openness, globalization, and democracy. This research explores the impact of monetary policy on the growth rate of total factor productivity (TFPG) and innovation efficiency (IE) through panel data of 30 countries from 1983 to 2018 by the bias-corrected fixed-effect dynamic (BCFE) model. We find that tight monetary policy negatively impacts the growth rate of total factor productivity (TFPG) and innovation efficiency (IE), which is still valid after a series of robustness tests. We then perform sub-sample regressions, and the results show that countries with higher government efficiency, higher financial development, and stricter environmental policy can reduce the negative impact of tightening monetary policy on total factor productivity and innovation efficiency. Our research illustrates that a tightening monetary policy not only adversely impacts total factor productivity but also influences the main driving force of its growth-innovation efficiency. Using panel data from 37 countries from 1990 to 2019 and applying a quantile regression approach with panel fixed effects, we investigate the impact of national Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance on green innovation and how this impact varies across different green innovation capacity distributions. The research conclusions are as follows. (1) National ESG performance improvement significantly promotes green innovation. (2) The improvement of environmental performance and governance performance significantly promotes green innovation, but in countries with weak green innovation capabilities, the improvement of social performance reduces the output of green innovation. (3) The role of national ESG performance in promoting green innovation is stronger in countries with weak green innovation capabilities. (4) In non‐high‐income countries, the stronger the green innovation capability is, the more obvious is the promotion of ESG performance to green innovation. The findings of this paper provide empirical evidence and a policy basis for governments to focus on improving ESG performance and to commit to promoting green innovation activities more effectively. In order to meet the strategic goals of carbon peak and carbon neutralization on schedule, it is crucial to examine the effects and limitations of green finance on the green transformation of industry. This research utilizes the entropy method, the Global Malmquist–Luenberger technique, and panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2018 to estimate the extent of industrial green transformation and green finance development in each province. It builds static and dynamic panel models to experimentally examine the effect of green finance on industrial green transformation. After introducing environmental regulation (ER), this paper presents how ER influences the link between green finance and industrial green transformation. The research finds the following. (1) According to geographical differences in the growth of green finance and industrial green transformation, the economically developed east region is more advanced than the central and west regions, and the central region is more advanced than the west region. (2) Green finance has a significantly positive impact on industrial green transformation, and this positive influence has certain continuity and inertia. (3) Environmental regulation has a favorable impact on the link between green finance and industrial green transformation; specifically, a rise in the level of environmental regulation stimulates the process of green finance that boosts industrial green transformation. Our research investigates the relationship between policy stability and clean energy investment via panel data covering 44 countries spanning the time period 2000–2020. Specifically considering the heterogeneity among countries with different levels of clean energy investment, we employ a panel quantile regression model on the sample data and further test the heterogeneity with a sub-sample of developing countries. Findings show that countries with higher levels of clean energy investment (CEI) exhibit a negative relationship between policy stability and CEI, while countries with lower levels of clean energy investment (CEI) have a positive relationship. We spot other factors that affect CEI and further conduct a robustness test on the model. These results offer critical policy implications on how to promote clean energy investment. What are the relationships between corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG), corporate social responsibility (CSR), and stock returns? Existing research has affirmed the impact of ESG or CSR on stock returns, but the discussion on the cointegration relationship among these three variables is still insufficient. Therefore, we use panel data of ESG ratings, CSR scores, and annual stock returns of 684 Chinese‐listed companies from 2011 to 2020 to verify the relationship between the variables through panel CADF and Westerlund tests. Meanwhile, we use PMG estimation to find that, in the long run, CSR significantly promotes the improvement of corporate stock returns, but ESG hurts the stock returns of most corporates. Further research proves that the impact of ESG on stock returns closely relates to corporate profitability. This study empirically investigates the effect of external financial market friction on restructuring activities, based on panel data of listed Chinese firms from 2004 to 2018. The results show that there is a positive correlation between financial market friction and the number of restructuring deals. We also find that high financial market friction increases preference for cash payments and the likelihood of mergers and acquisitions. These findings add to the restructuring literature by capturing heterogenous restructuring forms. They also deepen the understanding of the firm boundary theory, by suggesting that firms have incentives to increase their scopes when facing external market distress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our paper firstly investigates political stability as an underlying mechanism for the phenomenon of environmental spillovers across countries. If political stability exerts a significant impact on environmental quality and it is contagious across country borders, political stability of neighboring countries would be an impetus for environmental spillovers. Taking into account structural breaks in empirical analysis, we test these hypotheses based on an annual country-level panel data set during 2002 to 2018. Utilizing the dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) method and the panel-based Vector Error Correction (VEC) model, we demonstrate that an improvement in political stability in one country not only enhances the environmental quality of its own, but also meliorates that of its neighbors through the spillovers of political stability. This study first investigates different types of sanctions on energy security by employing data from a panel of target countries covering the period 1996–2014 and using the panel fixed effect model. Our evidence indicates that international sanctions do significantly negatively influence the energy security of target countries in some cases. Specifically, unilateral sanctions, U.S. sanctions, economic sanctions, and the intensity of sanctions have a significantly negative impact on energy security. However, plurilateral sanctions, EU sanctions, UN sanctions, and non-economic sanctions have no significant impact on the energy security of target countries. The results of endogeneity concerns are also consistent with the results of the basic regression analysis. We investigate the effect of the governments' responses to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic on the returns in the stock market index. Panel data of 20 countries are used spanning January 2 to July 21, 2020, for the dynamic panel model. The results indicate that the overall government response, containment and health, and stringency indices have a significantly positive effect on stock market returns. Specifically, government policy responses of shutting down workplaces, canceling public events, restricting public gatherings and international travel, providing income support, and implementing fiscal measures can increase stock market returns. Our evidence shows that the stock market does not react significantly to government interventions in the health system. This paper investigates the impact of government ideology on energy efficiency using data for a panel of 23 OECD countries over the 1980-2013 period. With dynamic panel data method applied, our evidence suggests that government ideology is a significant determinant of energy efficiency. Specifically, we show that left-wing parties are associated with energy efficiency improvements. Overall, our results are robust to the two measures of energy efficiency variables, alternative measures of government ideology variables, using annual and 3-year averages of the data, the inclusion of economic and political variables, and to model specifications. We examine the impact of natural disasters on the likelihood that a government is removed from office using panel data for 156 countries over the period 1975–2010. Employing a conditional logit model, we find that the occurrence of natural disasters, the number of natural disasters and disaster-related losses increase the chances that a government will be replaced. The magnitudes of these effects differ widely across natural disaster types, but are robust to the inclusion of economic and political variables and to model specifications. This research robustly investigates and verifies the impact of science-technology intermediary (STI) on regional innovation for panel data covering 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2019. Overall, we find that STI's effects on regional innovation are positive, no matter in the static or dynamic model, reflecting that more innovation-related entities may be motivated to plug into a STI-centered network due to increasingly positive externality, which in turn strengthens STI's innovation-enhancing effect over time. Giving consideration to both development and transaction costs in innovation activities, this study explores three mechanisms of the STI-innovation nexus. (1) STI reduces transaction cost, which then stimulates collaborations of innovation. (2) STI facilitates specialization in innovation-related resources' optimal redistribution, improving regional capacity to successfully convert existing elements into innovation outputs. (3) STI strengthens the capacity to absorb the knowledge spillover from neighboring provinces and foreign countries. This paper presents cross-country evidence on whether and how legal origins affect technical innovation. Using panel data on 120 countries between 1996 and 2019 and the Least Square Dummy Variable (LSDV) approach, we find that common law countries generally perform better in both technology innovation inputs and outputs than their civil law counterparts. Interestingly, we further present that French civil law countries exhibit the worst innovative performance, whereas German and Scandinavian civil law countries might even exceed common law countries in technical innovation. At least, there is no solid evidence to show that common law countries outperform German and Scandinavian civil law countries in technical innovation. Our findings further show that legal origins affect technical innovation via the political channel and the adaptation channel, and that legal origins' actual role in technical innovation correlates with their impacts on financial development and private property protection. Based on panel data of 23 OECD countries from 1990 to 2015, this research empirically analyzes the impact of environmental policy strictness on air quality (proxied by PM2.5 , CO 2 , NO x , and SO x emissions) and compares it to PM2.5 exposure using the method of System Generalized Moments (SYS-GMM). We further test the robustness of the empirical results by the methods of restricted samples period, cross-sectional regression, and Least Squares Dummy Variable Corrected (LSDVC) model. Overall, we find that environmental policy stringency (EPS) has a negative impact on CO 2 , NO x , and SO x emissions, while EPS presents a weak impact on both PM2.5 emissions and PM2.5 exposure, due to two potential reasons: first, the causes of PM2.5 are complex, and environmental policies are difficult to succeed; second, during the process of formulating the EPS composite index, there is no emphasis on the policy of PM2.5 restrictions.
