Previous research has shown that women's use of a carrageenan gel reduces the risk of acquiring genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infections but does not help to clear existing ones. Although gel use may not result in complete clearance, it may decrease the viral load of HPV infections. We tested this hypothesis in the Carrageenan‐gel Against Transmission of Cervical Human papillomavirus (CATCH) randomized controlled trial. Participants of the CATCH study were selected for viral load testing if they had completed the first four study visits and tested positive for HPV42 or HPV51 in at least one of these visits. HPV42 and HPV51 were chosen as they were among the most abundant low‐ and high‐risk types, respectively, in the study sample. We measured viral load with a type‐specific real‐time polymerase chain reaction. Results were displayed using summary statistics. Of 461 enrolled participants, 39 were included in the HPV42 analysis set and 56 in the HPV51 analysis set. The median time between visits 1 and 4 was 3.7 months. The viral load (copies/cell) of HPV42 ranged from <0.001 to 13 434.1, and that of HPV51 from <0.001 to 967.1. The net median change in HPV42 viral load over all four visits was −1.04 copies/cell in the carrageenan and −147 copies/cell in the placebo arm (Wilcoxon rank sum test, p = 0.26). There was no net median change in HPV51 viral load over all four visits in either arm (p = 0.45). The use of a carrageenan‐based gel is unlikely to reduce the viral load of HPVs 42 or 51. Background Real-world evidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine effectiveness (VE) against longitudinal outcomes is lacking among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). We compared 12-month incidence and persistence of anal HPV infection between vaccinated and unvaccinated GBM. Methods We recruited GBM aged 16–30 years in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, Canada, from 2017 to 2019. Participants were followed over a median of 12 months (interquartile range, 12–13 months). Participants self-reported HPV vaccination and self-collected anal specimens for HPV DNA testing. We calculated prevalence ratios (PR) for 12-month cumulative incidence and persistence with ≥1 quadrivalent vaccine type (HPV 6/11/16/18) between vaccinated (≥1 dose at baseline) and unvaccinated participants using a propensity score-weighted, modified Poisson regression. Results Among 248 participants, 109 (44.0%) were vaccinated at baseline, of whom 62.6% received 3 doses. PRs for HPV 6/11/16/18 were 0.56 (95% confidence interval [CI],.24–1.31) for cumulative incidence and 0.53 (95% CI,.25–1.14) for persistence. PRs were 0.23 (95% CI,.05–1.03) and 0.08 (95% CI,.01–.59) for incidence and persistence, respectively, among participants who received their first dose at age ≤23 years and 0.15 (95% CI,.03–.68) and 0.12 (95% CI,.03–.54) among participants who were sexually active for ≤5 years before vaccination. Background: Previous studies examining the association between male circumcision (MC) and human papillomavirus (HPV) infections have reported inconsistent results. We used data from the HPV Infection and Transmission Among Couples Through Heterosexual Activity (HITCH) cohort study to examine the association between MC and HPV infections in males and their female sexual partners.Methods: We enrolled monogamous couples in a longitudinal study between 2005 and 2011 in Montreal, Canada. We used logistic and Poisson regression models with propensity score adjustment to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and rate ratios for the association between MC and the prevalence, transmission, and clearance of HPV infections.Results: Four hundred thirteen couples were included in our study. The prevalence OR for the association between MC and baseline infections was 0.81 (95% confidence interval [CI], .56-1.16) in males and 1.05 (95% CI, .75-1.46) in females. The incidence rate ratio for infection transmission was 0.59 (95% CI, .16-2.20) for male-to-female transmission and 0.77 (95% CI, .37-1.60) for female-to-male transmission. The clearance rate ratio for clearance of infections was 0.81 (95% CI, .52-1.24).Conclusions: We found little evidence of an association between MC and HPV infection prevalence, transmission, or clearance in males and females. Background Infections with human papillomaviruses (HPVs) may enter a latent state, and eventually become reactivated following loss of immune control. It is unclear what proportion of incident HPV detections are reactivations of previous latent infections vs new transmissions. Methods The HPV Infection and Transmission among Couples through Heterosexual activity (HITCH) cohort study prospectively followed young newly formed heterosexual partners recruited between 2005 and 2011 in Montréal, Canada. We calculated the fraction of incident HPV detections nonattributable to sexual transmission risk factors with a Bayesian Markov model. Results are the median (2.5th-97.5th percentiles) of the estimated posterior distribution. Results A total of 544 type-specific incident HPV detection events occurred in 849 participants; 33% of incident HPV detections occurred in participants whose HITCH partners were negative for that HPV type and who reported no other sex partners over follow-up. We estimate that 43% (38%–48%) of all incident HPV detections in this population were not attributable to recent sexual transmission and might be potentially reactivation of latent infections. Conclusions A positive HPV test result in many cases may be a reactivated past infection, rather than a new infection from recent sexual behaviors or partner infidelity. Background: Women living with HIV (WLHIV) have a high risk of anal cancer. Identifying risk factors for anal HPV 16 infection, the most significant risk factor for anal cancer, is essential for prevention and screening strategies. Methods: In the EVVA Cohort study, 151 WLHIV had cervical and anal HPV testing with genotyping every 6 months for 2 years, while demographic and clinical data were collected via questionnaires and chart reviews. Here, we present results of baseline data analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Results: Among 150 women with adequate HPV test results at baseline, HPV 16 DNA was detected anally in 23 (15.3%; 95%CI:10.4–22.1) and cervically in 5 (3.3%; 95%CI:1.4–7.8). In multivariable analysis, current smoking (OR = 6.0; 95%CI: 1.5–23.9), nadir CD4 count ≤ 200 cells/μL (OR = 8.4; 95%CI: 2.0–34.3), prevalent cervical HPV 16 (OR = 14.7; 95%CI: 1.0–222.5) and anogenital herpes in previous 6 months (OR = 9.8, 95%CI: 1.7–56.8) were associated with prevalent anal HPV 16. Conclusions: Knowledge of risk factors can help identify WLHIV at greatest risk of anal HPV 16 infection and, potentially, developing subsequent anal cancer. Background: We assessed the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and genital human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence, incidence, and clearance among female participants in the HPV Infection and Transmission among Couples through Heterosexual activity (HITCH) Cohort Study.Methods: We genotyped HPV DNA in vaginal samples and quantified baseline serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels using Roche's Linear Array and Total vitamin D assay, respectively. We used logistic and Cox proportional hazards models, respectively, to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).Results: There was no association between vitamin D levels (every 10-ng/mL increase) at baseline and HPV prevalence (OR, 0.88; 95% CI, .73-1.03) or incidence (HR, 0.88; 95% CI, .73-1.06), but we observed a modest negative association with HPV clearance (HR, 0.76; 95% CI, .60-.96). Vitamin D levels <30 ng/mL, compared with those ≥30 ng/mL, were not associated with HPV prevalence (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, .57-1.69) or incidence (HR, .87; 95% CI, .50-1.43), but they were associated with a marginally significant increased clearance (OR, 2.14; 95% CI, .99-4.64). We observed consistent results with restricted cubic spline modeling of vitamin D levels and clinically defined categories. HPV type-specific analyses accounting for multiple HPV infections per participant showed no association between vitamin D levels and all study outcomes.Conclusions: This study provided no evidence of an association between low vitamin D levels and increased HPV prevalence, acquisition, or clearance. Couple-based studies have considered human papillomavirus (HPV) transmission between current heterosexual partners (male↔female). Using data from young women and their sequential male partners, we analysed HPV transmission from upstream sexual partnerships (male 1↔female) to downstream sex partners (→male 2). Among 502 females enrolled in the HPV Infection and Transmission among Couples through Heterosexual activity study (2005–2011, Montréal, Canada), 42 brought one male sex partner at baseline (male 1) and another during follow-up (male 2). Female genital samples, collected at six visits over 24 months, and male genital samples, collected at two visits over 4 months, were tested for 36 HPV types (n = 1512 detectable infections). We calculated observed/expected ratios with 95% CIs for type-specific HPV concordance between males 1 and 2. Using mixed-effects regression, we estimated ORs with 95% CIs for male 2 testing positive for the same HPV type as male 1. Detection of the same HPV type in males 1 and 2 occurred 2.6 (CI 1.9–3.5) times more often than chance (29 instances observed vs. 10.95 instances expected). The OR for male 2 positivity was 4.2 (CI 2.5–7.0). Adjusting for the number of times the linking female tested positive for the same HPV type attenuated the relationship between male 1 and 2 positivity, suggesting mediation. High type-specific HPV concordance between males 1 and 2 confirms HPV's transmissibility in chains of sequential sexual partnerships. Background: Detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in genital samples may not always represent true infections but may be depositions from infected sexual partners. We examined whether sexual risk factors and a biomarker (Y chromosome DNA) were associated with genital HPV partner concordance and estimated the fraction of HPV detections potentially attributable to partner deposition.Methods: The HITCH study enrolled young women attending a university or college in Montréal, Canada, and their male partners, from 2005 to 2010. We tested baseline genital samples for Y chromosome DNA and HPV DNA using polymerase chain reaction.Results: Type-specific HPV concordance was 42.4% in partnerships where at least one partner was HPV DNA positive. Y chromosome DNA predicted type-specific HPV concordance in univariate analyses, but in multivariable models the independent predictors of concordance were days since last vaginal sex (26.5% higher concordance 0-1 vs 8-14 days after last vaginal sex) and condom use (22.6% higher concordance in never vs always users). We estimated that 14.1% (95% confidence interval [CI], 6.3-21.9%) of HPV DNA detections in genital samples were attributable to vaginal sex in the past week.Conclusions: A substantial proportion of HPV DNA detections may be depositions due to recent unprotected vaginal sex. Background: The risk of anal cancer due to high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) is higher in women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) than in the general population. We present findings of cervical and anal HPV and cytologic tests at baseline in the EVVA cohort study and HPV persistence data 6 months after baseline.Methods: Semiannual visits included questionnaires, chart reviews, cervical/anal cytologic and cervical/anal HPV testing for 2 years. Genotyping for 36 HPV genotypes was performed using the Roche Linear Array HPV genotyping test.Results: A total of 151 women living with HIV were recruited. At baseline, 75% had anal HPV, 51% had anal HR-HPV, 50% had cervical HPV, and 29% had cervical HR-HPV. Anal HPV-16 and HPV-51 were more frequent in women born in Canada (31% and 29%, respectively, compared with ≤16% for other women). Most anal HR-HPV types detected at 6 months (57%-93%) were persistent from baseline. Findings of anal cytologic tests were abnormal for 37% of women.Conclusions: Anal HPV is highly prevalent in women living with HIV, and type distribution varies by place of birth. High-resolution anoscopy was indicated in more than one third of results. Background: Recent birth cohorts vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) may be protected against up to 4 genotypes (HPV-6, -11, -16, and -18). If natural competition exists between these and other HPV types, then the prevalence of other types may increase after vaccination.Methods: Cohort information from 3 studies was used to compare acquisition and clearance of 30 different HPV types (individually and grouped by species), according to infection status with vaccine-targeted types at baseline and the time of the index infection, respectively. Hazard ratios (HRs) were adjusted for predictors of multiple-type infection.Results: Among 3200 females across all studies, 857 were infected with HPV at baseline, and 994 acquired new infections during follow-up. Females infected with HPV-16 were at higher risk of acquiring other α-9 HPV types (HR, 1.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2-3.0) but at similar risk of clearing existing α-9 HPV infections (HR, 0.9; 95% CI, .7-1.3). Females infected with vaccine-targeted types were generally at higher risk of acquiring additional types (HRs, > 1.0) and at equal risk of clearing existing infections. Accounting for multiple comparisons, none of the HRs of < 1.0 or >1.0 were statistically significant in our analyses of acquisition or clearance.Conclusions: Vaccine-targeted HPV types do not appear to compete with other types, suggesting that HPV type replacement is unlikely to occur. This article describes the epidemiology of mucosal human papillomavirs (HPV) in adults and children, its mode of transmission and its associated diseases. Over 40 genotypes of HPV infect the epithelial lining of the anogenital tract and other mucosal areas of the body. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection globally, with high prevalences found in both females and males. The predominant route of transmission is via sexual contact, although mother-to-child transmission is also possible. HPV infection may exist asymptomatically or may induce the formation of benign or malignant tumours in the genital, oral or conjunctival mucosa. Although most infections clear spontaneously, those that persist result in substantial morbidity and invoke high costs associated with the treatment of clinically relevant lesions. Some 13–18 mucosal HPV types are considered to have high oncogenic potential. HPV is recognized unequivocally as the main causal factor for cervical cancer, and is further responsible for a substantial proportion of many other anogenital neoplasms and head and neck cancers. Infections with HPV types that have low oncogenic risk, such as HPV-6 and 11, are associated with benign lesions of the anogenital areas known as condylomata acuminata (genital warts), oral papillomas, conjunctival papillomas, as well as low-grade squamous intra-epithelial lesions of the cervix. Perinatally acquired HPV can also cause recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in infants and young children. Background: It is unknown whether recently human papillomavirus (HPV)-vaccinated individuals confer protection against vaccine-preventable HPV types to their partners.Methods: Participants 18 to 45 years old who were living in Montreal, Canada, and in a heterosexual relationship of 6 months or less were randomly assigned to receive the intervention HPV vaccine, Gardasil or Gardasil 9, or active control (AC), Avaxim, a hepatitis A vaccine. Couples attended a maximum of 6 clinic visits (baseline and at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months) and provided genital samples for detection of 36 HPV genotypes. Participants were vaccinated at baseline and at 2 and 6 months. We used Cox proportional hazards regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between the administered vaccine and infections at the HPV episode level.Results: We restricted analyses to 273 participants (intervention: n = 141, AC: n = 132) who had at least 2 visits with valid HPV data. The HR of becoming positive for a given vaccine-preventable HPV type in the intervention group among those who received at least 1 dose compared with AC was 0.47 (95% CI, 0.23-0.97). Comparing individuals with HPV-vaccinated versus AC-vaccinated partners, there was no difference in risk of becoming positive for a given vaccine-preventable HPV type among those whose partners received at least 1 (HR, 1.46; 95% CI, 0.73-2.94) or 2 (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.31-1.96) doses.Conclusions: Our study provides inconclusive evidence that individuals whose partner recently received an HPV vaccine are protected from vaccine-preventable types but demonstrates that vaccinated individuals are at a lower risk of incident infections.Trial Registration Number: NCT01824537. Background: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM), and GBM living with HIV in particular, are disproportionately impacted by HPV-associated cancers. The HPV vaccine, given early enough in life, may markedly reduce the likelihood of such cancers. In Canada, most provincial insurance programs only cover HPV vaccination for GBM up to the age of 26. Our objective was to understand physicians' everyday experiences and challenges in recommending HPV vaccination to older GBM patients. Methods: As part of the HPV Screening and Vaccine Evaluation (HPV-SAVE) Study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 25 HIV-positive GBM patients who had received anal cancer screening and 15 service providers, including 13 physicians, who had arranged for anal cancer screening in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia. In this analysis, we draw upon the 13 physician interviews, which were coded following Grounded Theory. Results: Physicians strongly supported the HPV vaccine for all GBM and considered it to be important for the management of HIV-related care. However, the overall support for HPV vaccination among physicians did not translate into consistent recommendation practices. There were two overarching factors that limited the strength/frequency of physicians' vaccine recommendation practices. First, cost/insurance coverage for some older patients impacted if and how the HPV vaccine was discussed. Second, physicians had diverse perspectives on both the prevention and therapeutic benefits of vaccinating older GBM and the reality that national guidelines are incongruent with publicly funded vaccine programs for vaccinating patients over 26 years old. These two interrelated factors have co-produced an apparent economic-evidentiary conundrum for many physicians regarding how and for whom to offer HPV vaccination. Conclusion: Economic barriers coupled with evidentiary and guideline gaps have created clinical practice challenges for physicians and has resulted in different messages being communicated to some older GBM patients about how important HPV vaccination is for their health. Abstract: Worldwide human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence in women with normal cytology at any given point in time is approximately 10% indicating that HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. HPV-16 is consistently the most common type and HPV-18 the second with some minor regional differences. Furthermore, across the spectrum of cervical lesions, HPV-16 is consistently the most common HPV type contributing to 50–55% of invasive cervical cancer cases strongly suggesting that this viral type has a biological advantage for transmission, persistency and transformation. The same phenomenon is observed albeit at a lower level for HPV-18 and HPV-45. Sexual behavioral patterns across age groups and populations are central to the description of the HPV circulation and of the risk of infection. The concept of group sexual behavior (in addition to individual sexual behavior) is important in exploring HPV transmission and has implications for defining and monitoring HPV and cancer prevention strategies. In natural history studies, the pattern of HPV DNA prevalence by age groups is similar to the patterns of HPV incidence. Rates of exposure in young women are high and often include multiple types. There is a spontaneous and rapid decrease of the HPV DNA detection rates in the middle-age groups followed by a second rise in the post-menopausal years. This article reviews: 1) the evidence in relation to the burden of HPV infections in the world and the contributions of each HPV type to the spectrum of cervical cellular changes spanning from normal cytology to invasive cervical cancer; 2) the critical role of the patterns of sexual behavior in the populations; and 3) selected aspects of the technical and methodological complexity of natural history studies of HPV and cervical neoplasia. Background: Starting in 2015, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has been publicly funded for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) 26 years or younger in Canada.Methods: Self-identified GBM who reported having sex with another man within the past 6 months were enrolled using respondent-driven sampling (RDS) between February 2017 and August 2019 in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, Canada. Men aged 16 to 30 years self-collected anal specimens for HPV-DNA testing. Prevalence was estimated using RDS-II weights. We compared the prevalence of quadrivalent (HPV-6/11/16/18) and 9-valent (HPV-6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52/58) vaccine types between GBM who self-reported HPV vaccination (≥1 dose) and those reporting no vaccination using a modified Poisson regression for binary outcomes.Results: Among 645 GBM who provided a valid anal specimen (median age, 26 years; 5.9% HIV positive), 40.3% reported receiving ≥1 dose of HPV vaccine, of whom 61.8% received 3 doses. One-quarter were infected with ≥1 quadrivalent type (crude, 25.7%; RDS weighted, 24.4%). After adjustment for potential confounders, vaccinated GBM had a 27% lower anal prevalence of quadrivalent types compared with unvaccinated GBM (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR], 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54-1.00). Lower prevalence ratios were found among vaccinated participants who were vaccinated >2 years before enrollment (aPR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.25-0.86) or received their first vaccine dose at age ≤23 years (aPR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.42-0.99). Point estimates were similar for ≥2 or 3 doses and 9-valent types.Conclusions: Human papillomavirus vaccination was associated with a lower anal prevalence of vaccine-preventable HPV types among young, sexually active GBM. The social science literature on medical screening has documented a notable disjuncture between the promises of population-based screening programs and the complex realities of their rollout in everyday practice. We contribute to this scholarship by examining how healthcare providers confront numerous uncertainties associated with the implementation of anal cancer screening programs in Canada given the absence of standardized national evidence-based guidelines. The data was derived from in-depth interviews conducted with 13 physicians and 2 clinical researchers about anal cancer screening for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men living with HIV, the minority sub-population at the highest risk for HPV-associated anal cancer. Despite having unknown utility and low specificity, an initial anal Pap test was used to triage patients into anal dysplasia clinics for high-resolution anoscopy. This process led to technological scepticism toward the Pap's accuracy, diagnostic ambiguity related to the interpretation of the cytology results and increased patient anxiety regarding abnormal results. Physicians navigated a tension between wanting to avoid exposing their patients to additional uncertainties caused by screening and pre-cancer treatment and wanting to ensure that their patients did not develop anal cancer under their care. A high number of abnormal anal Pap results paradoxically reintroduced some of the capacity issues that the Pap was meant to resolve, as the existing dysplasia clinics were incapable of seeing all patients with abnormal results. We define this sequence as the epistemic-capacity paradox , a dynamic whereby seeking evidence to improve healthcare capacity simultaneously produces evidence that introduces capacity challenges and generates additional uncertainty. Men living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are internationally recognized as a priority population for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Our objective was to explore HPV vaccine uptake among men living with HIV in Ontario, Canada, and investigate differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated men. We used data from a cross-sectional questionnaire administered between 2016 and 2017 among men living with HIV and participating in the Ontario HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study. We calculated the proportion vaccinated against HPV, described vaccination experiences, and HPV vaccine knowledge, and calculated differences in characteristics between vaccinated and unvaccinated men. Among 1651 men (mean age = 51 years, 72% identified as gay), 7% were vaccinated (95% confidence interval[CI] 5.5-7.9%); 85% received their first dose at a primary care or HIV clinic. Among unvaccinated men, 40% were unaware of the HPV vaccine, 65% reported low perceived risk for HPV, and 8% discussed HPV vaccination with a physician. Compared to unvaccinated men, vaccinated men were younger, most identified as gay, had a higher education/income, reported a higher number of recent sex partners, and had a history of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HPV, anogenital warts, and/or anal cancer. Our findings reveal that few men living with HIV were vaccinated against HPV. This may be influenced by low HPV awareness, prohibitive cost, and lack of physician recommendation. Several men reporting lower socio-economic status, older men, and heterosexual, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men were missed for vaccination. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated anal cancer is orders of magnitude higher among men living with HIV than the general male population. Our objective was to examine factors associated with HPV awareness and self-perceived risk for HPV-associated anal cancer among men living with HIV, which may influence uptake of cancer prevention strategies. A cross-sectional questionnaire on HPV was administered from 2016 to 2017 to 1677 men in a multisite, HIV clinical cohort in Ontario, Canada. We used logistic regression and proportional odds models to identify factors associated with being familiar with HPV and increasing self-perceived risk for anal cancer, respectively. We used correspondence analysis to examine associations of specific HPV-related knowledge with self-perceived risk. Only 52% were familiar with HPV, and 72% felt they had no or low risk for anal cancer. Familiarity with HPV was more common among men who have sex with men than heterosexual men (58% vs. 21%). Older men were less likely to be familiar with HPV (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] per 10 years = 0.77; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.69, 0.85). Familiarity with HPV was associated with increasing self-perceived risk (aOR = 2.39; 95% CI: 1.87, 3.04). After accounting for differences in HPV awareness and sexual orientation, racialized men had lower self-perceived risk (aOR = 0.68; 95% CI: 0.52, 0.88). In the correspondence analysis, risk-focused HPV-related knowledge (e.g., knowing smoking increases risk) was associated with highest risk perception. Efforts are needed to improve HPV-related health literacy in this population. Our findings suggest specific HPV-related knowledge may differentially influence self-perceived risk for anal cancer. Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is commonly found in the genital tract of men and women with or without any clinical lesion. The association of HPV DNA with several different ano-genital cancers other than cervical has been reported for the vulva, vagina, anus and penis. HPV DNA has also been identified in head and neck cancers in the oral cavity, the oropharynx and the larynx in both sexes. In men, 80-85% of anal cancers and close to 50% of penile cancers are associated with HPV infection. In women, HPV DNA is prevalent in 36–40% vulvar cancer cases and close to 90% of vaginal cancers. There is limited data available on the natural history and HPV-related diseases in the genital tract in men, although studies are ongoing. Efficacy of HPV vaccines in the prevention of HPV infection and disease among men also remains unknown. Among HPV DNA positive ano-genital cancer cases, HPV-16 is the most frequently found followed distantly by HPV-18. In benign HPV-related diseases such as genital warts or recurrent respiratory papillomatosis HPV-6 and 11, the two most frequent non-oncogenic types, are the predominant types detected. Oncogenic types are rarely detected. In this article we summarize and review studies describing the natural history of HPV infections among men and its impact on HPV related disease in women. We summarize the evidence linking HPV in the epidemiology and etiology of cancers of the vulva, vagina, anus and oropharynx and present recent estimates of the burden of and HPV type distribution in genital warts and in cases of HPV infection of the airways.
